I get it even among strong democratic supporters with whom I consorted last weekend in Aspen. Only one woman with whom I spoke seemed to understand the truly deep existential hole we’ve dug ourselves into. In other words, the country can do no wrong, it is someone else’s fault for the “error”. The world does not subscribe to that point of view. Reality does not commend it as well. But the insistence that the country is exceptional is rooted so deeply in the American consciousness, it may never be rectified without complete disintegration of the American State.
