I wouldn’t normally recommend an article by Pat Buchanan but his piece at Real Clear Politics is exactly 180 out from McCain / Bush reaction to Georgia. Buchanan calls it “Saakashvili’s blunder” and speaks ill of “Bush, Cheney and McCain” and “Western hypocrisy”.

I wonder if people should be so derisive about this ploy of the McCain campaign. They, and many in the mainstream media, are spinning it as “McCain is acting presidential. Oooh! Look at that!” McCain’s “base” seems to be loving it.

I think we need to look more closely at exactly how and under what circumstances this crisis was precipitated, and how much involvement Schenemann had and has. Would you put this past the Republicans, with Karl Rove advising, with the oil companies financing a potential McCain presidency? There is a lot of oil politics in that region.

Remember that appearances and images are everything to a lot of voters.
McCain sure jumped on that “We are all Georgians now!” didn’t he? Damn, that was curious. And John Bolton is lovin’ in! Just lovin’ it.

I don’t think people should take this ploy so lightly.

The extent of McCain’s involvement in the military conflict in Georgia appears remarkable among presidential candidates, who traditionally have kept some distance from unfolding crises out of deference to whoever is occupying the White House.

The “out of deference to whoever is occupying the White House” is key here. Doesn’t seem George is around much these days though he did make a cameo at the WH between Beijing and Crawford. And he was looking awfully drunk at the Olympics.
