While Obama has been working to dispel the McCain-inspired notion that he is somehow "presumptuous", McCain himself, by thrusting himself into the Georgia mess, has been busy making sure everyone sees him as "President McCain".
But even the Washington Post isn’t sure this is such a hot idea:
The extent of McCain’s involvement in the military conflict in Georgia appears remarkable among presidential candidates, who traditionally have kept some distance from unfolding crises out of deference to whoever is occupying the White House. The episode also follows months of sustained GOP criticism of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, who was accused of acting too presidential for, among other things, briefly adopting a campaign seal and taking a trip abroad that included a huge rally in Berlin.
"We talk about how there’s only one president at a time, so the idea that you would send your own emissaries and really interfere with the process is remarkable," said Lawrence Korb, a Reagan Defense Department official who now acts as an informal adviser to the Obama campaign. "It’s very risky and can send mixed messages to foreign governments. . . . They accused Obama of being presumptuous, but he didn’t do anything close to this."
And apparently, that November thing is just a formality:
Asked about his tough rhetoric on the ongoing conflict in Georgia, McCain began: "If I may be so bold, there was another president . . ."
He caught himself and started again: "At one time, there was a president named Ronald Reagan who spoke very strongly about America’s advocacy for democracy and freedom."
So evidently that ad he ran awhile back crowning himself president was no joke.

I’m surprised WaPo said anything. I fully expect an “exclusive” interview of McSFB by the uppity Bob Woodward any day now.
Being the presumtive elected candidate do you have ‘presumtive executive privilage’??…can you pardon all of your campaign officials?
Well, I’d love to sit here and chat with myself but…
off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Not only that, you can wage your own wars!
Jake Tapper also picked up the presumptuous theme from the Washington Post. Off course everyone else will just except that old adage IOKIYR.
Morning pups. I see in the NYT that Gates has once again poured cold water on the fires set by hard-liners. I don’t think we appreciate how lucky we are that in the window of opportunity preceding the ’surge’, the Bush-I junta got one of their people in charge of the defence department. I’d hate to think where we’d be now were Rumsfeld to be in charge.
Still find it hard to credit that McStain has even the smidgeonist of a chance of being Preznit. But there you go. Read Russel Banks Dreaming Up America last night before going to bed. Some insights, a few (very few) historical errors (surprised his editors didn’t catch them), but a good quick, and somewhat grim read of our country’s psyche. The problem isn’t in our stars, it’s us. Otherwise we wouldn’t keep electing militarists. It’s a good point, and the main one.
Perhaps the presumption lies in the fact that we’ve no had no leadership to speak of for the last 8 years. If so, then what’s the problem with President Obama and Senator McSame stepping up to fill a power vaccuum?
Don’t you mean you (or your campaign surrogates) can mislead the leaders of small countries into believing you have the power to protect them if they start a war? That those leaders can call on you to put your actions where your mouth is?
I wonder what McC will be like to work with in the Senate after he is un-presidented in November. Considering his usual temper and disposition, I think it may be very unpleasant.
“We talk about how there’s only one president at a time, so the idea that you would send your own emissaries and really interfere with the process is remarkable,” said Lawrence Korb
Yeah, we wouldn’t want Presidential candidates negotiating with Iranian hostage takers or anything.
These people make me sick.
Nah, McCain will say that he’s so glad that ran a honorable campaign.
You really can’t blame the befuddled old fart McCain ffrom believing he is the prez… I’m sure his pals at Diebold have worked very hard to rig the election for the third time.

Are we talking about it or are we talking about it?
It would appear that the GOP’s October Surprise is a classic Cold War Confrontation – not only Georgia, but a missile defense complex in Poland.
Poke Putin with a stick until he puts ICBM’s in Cuba.
Scare the living shit out of the electorate.
You betcha !!
when reality slaps these stupid fuckers in the head come november, they ain’t gonna know what hit em
left you a note downstairs – sorry I missed ya
‘Befuddled old fart’ (BOF).. may be very close to the truth…McStupid thinks the election is over and he is the new ‘Commander Coo Coo’. BOF! BOF! I love it!
As the product of privelege it is not necessary to actually have to qualify for anything, Given a pathetic HS record – priveledged John got to go to remedial high, still not making the grade they lowered the standards for him to go to Annapolis. His careers have been served up to him on a silver platter. Why not the presidency
Yes! and check the timing…Obama’s vacation week.
Southern, Phonetic pronunciation. Geez.
Bush and Condi’s vacation week too.
And this worked out so well with W, why not strive to have loser McSame?
To paraphrase
The GOP Campaign crystallizes:
Mooslims and Rooskies and Negroes
Oh My !!
Mornin’ David and Firedogs
this is the part of the week where I have to do more skimming than reading
EW had a post yesterday alluding to a palpable level of panic at State and DoD over any appearance of this conflict being choreographed -
and BAM! they interrupt Chimpigula’s bike ride this morning and put his still groggy ass in front of a rose garden microphone (no, I didn’t listen – blerrgghh)
of course it’s choreographed … right from giving the georgians the go ahead to start the fight, thru mcsame’s assumption of foreign policy direction …
Good morning Cbl. Thank you.
I just had a thought. Maybe McCain is going to imitate Davey Crockett, who, after losing an election, told Tennessee voters they could go to hell and he was going to Texas. Graham and Liebermann may be the advance party to Tblisi.
What do you expect, another Republican running for office.
First there was Richard Millhouse Nixon, under cover negotiating with the North Vietnamese, while a war was being waged.
Next there was Ronald Reagan who, undercover negotiating with the Iranians to hold hostages being held until such time they presumed office, undermining the incumbent President’s efforts for their release.
God only knows what George the Turd did.
Now you have a deranged, deluded John Straight-Fucking McCain, on the phone, giving promised he will not remember, to a neocon lackey to start a military campaign against an agreed arrangement for Russian assurance of peacekeeping.
Does no one remember shit there? Unbelievable! Archie Bunker had it – STIFLE!!!!
Knut, left you a reply below, thanks for the recommendation.
The “out of deference to whoever is occupying the White House” is key here. Doesn’t seem George is around much these days though he did make a cameo at the WH between Beijing and Crawford. And he was looking awfully drunk at the Olympics.
I wonder if people should be so derisive about this ploy of the McCain campaign. They, and many in the mainstream media, are spinning it as “McCain is acting presidential. Oooh! Look at that!” McCain’s “base” seems to be loving it.
I think we need to look more closely at exactly how and under what circumstances this crisis was precipitated, and how much involvement Schenemann had and has. Would you put this past the Republicans, with Karl Rove advising, with the oil companies financing a potential McCain presidency? There is a lot of oil politics in that region.
Remember that appearances and images are everything to a lot of voters.
McCain sure jumped on that “We are all Georgians now!” didn’t he? Damn, that was curious. And John Bolton is lovin’ in! Just lovin’ it.
I don’t think people should take this ploy so lightly.
Does no one remember the Reagan team in 1980 interfering with the release of the Iranian hostages? Obviously this was done w/o the press that McCain has now, but it set the precedent.
Free Market was instituted in Russia under Yeltsin inpartnership with a Milton Friedman econ team. They privatized the state industry and essentialt handed them to the Global Corporate Oligarchy.
OMG surprise…it did not make russia a better nieghbor?
After the shock doctrine of the 90’s and the conversion to market economy Russia’s econ is in the tank. Neocoms have it boths ways all the time. Russia, China and the USA are all moving to fascism like destitute Germany in the 30s. Fear, Fear, Fear is what NcSame and the neocons are selling. Time to invoke “Do the things you fear the most and the death of fear is certain,” Truly a lowly assualt on reason.
His people told Netanyahu not to bother concluding an agreement with Clinton because he’d get a better deal from them.
I guess IOKIYAR applies to the Logan Act, too. But usually they have the sense to keep it secret until after the election.
stolen election but the neocons in power…but that is not good enough …now they have to undermine public policy by illegally negotiating a defacto treaty with foriegn goernment president. The open amitted ats by NcInsnae an others violate the Us Contitution. McBame broke the law. (My bet is don ht Bush was in on this since McSame’s call to Georgian premier in April…yes April! That was for months why didn’t Bushco tell him to but out then? From Emptywheel yesterday;
The day of the call, a lobbying firm partly owned by the adviser, Randy Scheunemann, signed a $200,000 contract to continue providing strategic advice to the Georgian government in Washington.
We have elected official that are tasked with foreign policy and a DOD when it comes to war. These neocons are bordering treason if not over the line.
John Conyers when pressed on Democracy Now yesterday said he had no less than four committees working on illegal actions of Bushco. And he was calling them back from the break. We are in serious trouble.
I wouldn’t normally recommend an article by Pat Buchanan but his piece at Real Clear Politics is exactly 180 out from McCain / Bush reaction to Georgia. Buchanan calls it “Saakashvili’s blunder” and speaks ill of “Bush, Cheney and McCain” and “Western hypocrisy”.
In 1898, William Randolph Hearst helped start the Spanish-American War. Fast forward a century plus ten, and we have McCain helping to start the South Ossetian-Georgia-Russia war. Rarely are we treated to non-Presidents starting wars…
Mikheil Saakashvili, the President of the Republic of Georgia, is just a worthless, lying fascist war criminal. He ordered the pre-meditated slaughter of the citizens of South Ossetia with bombings and raids where Georgian tanks ran over people and Georgian soldiers set fire to South Ossetian churches and burned people alive.
