The right wing damage control team is trying to spin their way out of a possible fatal blemish on the Carefully Manicured Hero Saga of “The Tale of John McCain, Who Was Shot Down in his Plane, and Then Suffered a Lot of Pain”

In the spin article linked below, a lady named Beth simultaneously accepts as validated truth the words of McCain’s prison “warden”, one Mr. Tran Trong Duyet, now 75, that John McCain was a worthy prisoner, but Beth flatly rejects as untrue other words from the same Tran Trong Duyet, that John McCain was never tortured. Really, she does. Her expertise in the matter? Her husband was a Vietnam veteran,and he told her all about the North Vietnamese. Read the article and ponder if you cannot but see the wishful hero worship projections in her “conclusions”. She paints the North Vietnamese as torturers, on her word, but neglects to remind the reader that John McCain was drowning, when he was saved by a North Vietnamese man who took a chance with his own life, to pull John McCain from a Hanoi lake, a John McCain who was drowning under his parachute, with two broken arms and one broken leg, because he forgot how to safely eject from his plane. For a highly trained aviator, who was in the process of losing his fifth Navy jet, this lapse of the effect of emergency ejection training will not appear as too much of a surprise. He was, after all, fifth from the bottom of his Annapolis Class.

After you have read Beth’s “evidence”, consider the following other unmentioned facts.

John McCain refuses to answer the direct statements by Mr. Tran Trong Duyet. Instead, he refers the questioner to Orson Swindle another prisoner, Orson Swindle. Mr. Swindle’s response is the Duyet “has no credibility on EVERY utterance he makes”. (We see that Beth does believe SOME of the statements). The problem is who will vouch for Mr. Swindle, other than John McCain.

The Pentagon has many films of John McCain’s many appearances in Communist North Vietnam’s propaganda videos in which McCain called himself a War Criminal for bombing and killing innocent North Vietnamese women and children, as well as for being an illegal invader into Vietnam.

The Pentagon REFUSES to make those films public. National Security, don’t you know. John McCain refuses to ask the Pentagon to release those films.

No-one ever saw John McCain tortured, but many prisoners did see John McCain acting very defiantly when he was returned to his cell, looking none the worse for wear, from “interrogation/torture” sessions from his captors. (I wonder what Beth would deduce about that scenario?). There were fellow prisoners who, in the privacy of their local VFW posts, call John McCain a liar and a phony.

Now the ULTIMATE question about the very essence of John McCain’s ethics and character is NOT whether or not he succumbed to torture. No thinking person could hold such an impossible standard against another human being serving in his nation’s military forces. If he broke, we can feel his pain, in a sense, of his deep humiliation in himself, the son/grandson of American admirals.

But what is unforgivable, and what can NEVER be forgiven, is for such a person to lie about his captors, who saved his life from drowning in a lake, (while John McCain was bombing civilian targets), and who saved his life by treating him with the best Russian physician the North Vietnamese had in Hanoi. (Far better treatment than any of his fellow prisoners received.)

John McCain is on record as admitting he “broke” under torture. There have been many stories that John McCain was lying about his being tortured, but they have all been kind of inferential and fuzzy. Now we have a witness, close to the end of his life, Mr. Tran Trong Duyet, who tells us he admired his prisoner John McCain, but that John McCain was never tortured. So we now have in plain view the very real possibility John McCain broke without being tortured … that he broke for the special treatment he received from his captors. That would explain why, in his shame, he was in no hurry to go home and be labeled a collaborator. (Of course, when the war ended, he lost the option of not returning to America.)

That would also explain why John McCain, if not perceived a true hero by the Navy, would not be on a fast track to “make” Admiral as he was “destined” to do, and as he had hoped he would. John McCain would have become Admiral John McCain, if the secret films, his ethical challanges and other reports to the Pentagon has not made public revealed a far different John McCain than the public knows today. The Navy could not tolerate such a record in the dosier of a future admiral. It was possible that some perceptive high ranking military officer told John McCain … “With your ethics, you should go into politics. You will go far there.”

Now if Mr. Tran Trong Duyet is telling us the “whole” truth, does that make John McCain the greatest liar, the most reprehensible phony in American history?

I think the possibility is more than likely, and that’s the REAL straight talk.
