So, I assume that by now most of you are aware that John McCain is a war hero and member of the Support-Our-Troops party. And troops traditionally skew conservative, so you’d figure that he’d totally mop the floor with Obama when it comes to donations from them, right? Um, not so much…
[A] new analysis by Open Secrets finds that the U.S. military is increasingly rejecting McCain as its spokesman. Obama has received nearly six times as much money from soldiers deployed overseas [in 2008]. Even anti-war libertarian Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), who has suspended his campaign, has received more than four times as much as McCain.
The numbers: Obama $60,642. Paul $45,512. McCain… $10,665. Where’s the love?
The gap is a lot closer ($335K-$280K) when you factor in the entire military, although Obama is still ahead. I guess a McCain presidency sounds a lot more appealing when you’re not actually getting shot at.
Interestingly, the troops are giving 59% of their congressional campaign donations to Republicans, so they still look pretty conservative. They just don’t like McCain. Even the Navy, his own branch, doesn’t like him – the only branch McCain "won" was the Marines.
Could it be that the troops don’t want to stay in Iraq for the next 100 years or more? Or that they don’t feel comfortable with a Commander-In-Chief who doesn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shia? Perhaps they don’t appreciate his opposition to Webb’s amendment to give them longer rotations home, or to Webb’s update to the GI Bill?
Or maybe they just think he’s a cranky old asshole who doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing.
(Thanks to Blue Texan for the title)

Find out who these soldiers are and try them for treason!
-F
Even Ron Paul collected more funds!
Yeah, they seem to like candidates who will bring them home, for some reason.
I had to add that article in my post today too, Eli! ;-0
Bet the Rs are now really really mad that they integrated the military.
Maybe they could expand Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
Yeah, but then they’d go to profiling.
Or that they don’t feel comfortable with a Commander-In-Chief who doesn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shia?
You’d think they’d be used to that by now…..
Hi Eli!
Hi jayt! Sad, isn’t it.
*ouch* That hurt… Btw, there’s more Blacks and Latinos proportionately serving in the military than there is in the national per capita…!
They probably also hear accounts from soldiers who have been forced to take these official delegations rug shopping at the local market. Risking your ass so some pol can have a photo op would tend to chafe, I think.
D’oh! I meant to include that and totally forgot. I need to start writing down notes or something…
My 10 was for ya, eCAHN…
The neo-cons will punish these soldiers. Republican “vote caging” specifically targets deployed troops. Unfortunately, our wimpy Democratic Party does not fight this. Oh, what a surprise it would be on election day, if the votes of our military men and women were not counted.
While driving home today, I was behind a beat-up pickup truck for about 15 minutes in traffic because of an accident. Well-worn pickups are a common sight around KC, not as suburban status transportation but as working vehicles. As traffic slowed down and I got closer to the bumper of this pickup, I could see it had a magnetic ribbon on it — not the standard “Support the troops” or “God Bless America,” but “Had Enough? Vote Democratic.”
There were also two homemade signs in the back windows of the cab. Sign one was a pretty tame “Obama ‘08″ kind of thing, but sign two was more unique. It had the word “McCain” in a red circle with a slash through it, and a legend underneath that read “Badass Soldier — Dumbass Politician.”
I never enjoyed sitting in traffic behind a pickup truck more in my life.
I’m sure Lieberman would stick up for them like he did in 2000…
A cranky old asshole who doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing, and one hell of a bad actor to boot. See his speech, “We are all Georgians now”. My f’in’ gawd what a phony!
This may be why they’re not allowing voter registration at VA Hospitals.
I’m sure Lieberman would stick up for them like he did in 2000…
Does that mean his ticket to Georgia *is* round-trip – not a one-way?
crap.
Extend their tours, that will teach them. Oh, you were going to anyway? Never mind.
God damn, that pissed me off.
Thought it might be.
This may be why they’re not allowing voter registration at VA Hospitals.
Lawd hep me – these bastards frost my ass….
Digg it For the Lake and Eli!
They barely even pretend to not hate soldiers and veterans, but no-one ever seems to notice.
I’m wondering whether recruiters have been asking – “and why do you want to serve the president?”
Should serve as nothing other than a warning. McCain wants to do something so stupid he gets his entire country attacked?
It’s a damn good question.
They hate everybody (including the people who vote for them) except the people who can hand over big bucks.
And I’ll bet they think the big donors are schmucks too. People with no respect for other group of people often have no respect for anyone.
Someone is Europe said “We are all Americans” after 9/11. Yesterday we found that part of one of McC’s speeches was taken directly from Wiki. His campaign people apparently can’t come up with an original idea at all. Silly. Looks really stupid.
I’m hoping that he’ll look at the wrong Wikipedia entry and start talking about how much he loves the Braves and Falcons…
“We are all Georgians now”“Ich binn ein Berliner”“Yee-haw!!!”
Third term anyone?
Except maybe that wide-stance toe-tapper in the next stall.
At least he didn’t say Ich bin ein berliner.
Um, mods won’t allow me to say what they think about those marks.
Jayt I owe ya.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
This politicized Administration is betraying those that served us. The Bush administration is the most egregious and vile administration in history… History will judge them poorly… This type of treatment is just one more reason to start the Impeachment hearings.
Or that he is a citizen of the world.
Silly. Looks really stupid.
But ya gotta admit – he makes it look very natural.
Wonder why that is?
Would be fun to hear him mangle it though. He could begin with “my friends” :)
I’ve seen people in coffins who looked more natural than McC. He makes Bayh look positively bubbly.
I swear he starts every other line with, “my friends…” *gah*
Ich bin ein berliner
I am a donut.
Jayt I owe ya.
Just skip the middle-man and send it Eli’s way. (he was “pissed” @21 before I was “frosted” @23). heh.
Sounds like us bunch of monkeys typing randomly on a keyboard are creating a McCane speech.
It’s strange, because I was under the impression that he was a really charismatic guy in 2000. Maybe it’s only behind the scenes with the media, because his public speaking is painful.
Thought it was specifically a jelly doughnut.
I also think he’s aged a lot since 2000.
good point. Bayh *does* look great compared with most dead people I know….
Okay. a jelly doughnut.
mmmmmmm….. a jelly doughnut!
I am a donut.
Coulda been worse. He might have said “I am a donut holder.”
Gonna have home made peach preserves with a fresh croissant I brought up from the city tonight. Guess I should tell Marion to put it on the breakfast menu.
or I am a donut hole.
Although it was merely political gimickery, I’m surprised that Obama didn’t take McBuush on the townhall challenge… Obama would’ve blown him outta the water at every venue…!
The city? You in SF?
I was kinda surprised by that too, actually. Maybe he didn’t want it to look like McCain was calling the shots.
Aren’t there going to be debates? Tell me there are going to be debates!
I think it had to do with how the questions were going to be handled. The questions were going to be softballs for some reason.
Maybe Brian Williams, Charlie Gibson, and Mr. Snuffalupagus will be the moderators…
Nope. Was at my apt in NYC for the past several days but returned to mid-Hudson house tonight, with a fresh croissant for breakfast tomorrow morning. Guess by now you’ve figured out that I can’t wait for breakfast.
I was reading up about that around the time Obama was headed to Berlin. Turns out the pastry gaffe is an urban legend. There is no donut which Germans refer to as a “berliner.”
Because those are the kind McCain is best at?
Actually, Jim Lehrer, CBS’s Scheifler, and another one that I can’t recall, might be Williams…
Best at? Sometimes he can answer a softball question. I haven’t seen anyone throw him any hardballs evah! Evah!!!
You know, the trouble with the French is that they have no word for croissant.
Three …first one in Oxford, Ms. Unless they have built something new since I last saw it, can’t imagine where they are going to put it “cause there are going to be lots of people.
Gwen Ifill will moderate the one Veep debate…
Lehrer. Gwenn Ifill for the VP debate.
Right you are!
snip
Other possible origins follow.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ich_bin_ein_Berliner
Thanks. I didn’t know that.
Lehrer is moderating that one…
Oxford, MS???????
Maybe my parents can go. They are in Picayune. Moving to Picayune was big mistake. B-O-R-I-N-G. It is more boring than Oxford.
or for entrepreneur . . .
We’ve all been hanging out too long together. We should just number the appropriate lines to save server space.
From Wikipedia
Somehow I found McCain’s bastardization of that line for crass political reasons particularly offensive.
Yep. And Eddie Izzard has a whole routine built around it.
General Election (2008 tentative dates)
October 15, 2008 Presidential Debate in Hempstead, New York
October 7, 2008 Presidential Debate in Nashville, TN
September 26, 2008 Presidential Debate in Oxford, Mississippi
October 2, 2008 Vice-Presidential Debate in St. Louis, Missouri
“Senator Obama, please explain the economic plans for your presidency, and explain why those who say that those plans are unrealistic are incorrect.”
“Senator McCain – how do you feel about kittens?”
dya think
Talk about cheapening the speech.
My friends, I love me some kittens. Tastie little critters.
They should definitely go. I would if I could. Should be great fun to see them go at each other for the first time.
He’s probably reply that he prefers puppies, thus pissing off all the cat lover voters.
Tom Brokaw is the one I couldn’t remember…
It’s important to note that only contributors of $200 or more are required to provide their employment information, and therefore there are lots of contributors not accounted for in these numbers.
Nevertheless, if McCain shows $10,665 from military-employed contributors who gave $200 or more, the maximum number of these would be….53. Is it possible than only 53 — or fewer! — donors of $200 or more who are military-employed gave to McCain?
Why do the officers hate our troops?
26 donors.
He has a lot fewer donors than Obama across the whole military too, 558 to 859, which is way out of proportion to the money disadvantage.
Dugg
now back to the Olympics
Heh, being a former NCO, I could think of a whole heck of a lot of better things to spend $200 on…! Considering that was a significant chunk of my monthly pay, too…! ;-)
Jane has LateNite upstairs!
Late Nite FDL: Get Those Volley Ball Chicks Off My TV
Brokaw is the third, I believe, with Gwen Ifill as the Veep debate moderator. She had an intriguing response to a chatz question today:
My emphasis: I wonder if Gwen will recuse herself should McCain choose Condi?
Tom Brokaw is the one I couldn’t remember…
Rut-roh. I watched Brokaw interview Obama on MTP a few weeks ago, and Obama kept breaking out in laughter at Brokaw’s utterly inane questions.
I enjoyed that at the time – might not be such a good thing in a presidential debate, though.
They should let Rachel do it.
Rachel…
Great again tonight filling in for KO.
Maybe Mary Carillo could try to get Obama to eat fried-scorpion-on-a-stick.
I hear it’s just like chicken but pointier.
