The AFL/CIO has a new flyer hammering John McCain on his wealth and his contempt for Social Security.
It’s going out to seniors in battleground states and is part of a critical effort because as the WaPo notes, Obama has a voter age gap that could be troublesome in places like Pennsylvania. He may have the hearts of all voters ages 18-29 (63% nationwide), but with 33% of white voters over the age of 65 he’s lagging behind Kerry 2004 (44%) and Gore 2000 (46%):
With polls showing Obama dominating among those under 40 and running even among middle-aged voters, Republican John McCain’s lead among those 65 and older is the main reason he remains close overall. His margin is largest among older white voters without a college education, accounting for much of Obama’s problem with the white working class.
As Digby notes, McCain’s negative ads are pointed directly at this demographic.
It’s also the 73rd birthday of Social Security, which makes it only slightly older than John McCain. The DNC has released a video of Roosevelt’s grandson talking about how important and successful the program has been.
The video is only on the internets, so McCain will probably never see it.

My message @ 4 was for punaise @ 2
Why does the phrase “Low Information Voter” flash before my eyes every time I see McCain’s poll numbers?

what’s with that camera angle, anyway?
speaking of birthdays, happy birthday to Watertiger!
what’s with that camera angle, anyway?
It allows for a blue background for the text. But shooting up does convey a sense of stature which clashes with the message.
It’s good that McCain is blowing his wad early. Obama has lots of time to respond. McCain is vulnerable on social security, it the anti-McCain ads will be coming on hard, not just from Obama but from the labour movement. He will try to weasel out of what he said, but it’s on tape and will be used against him. What I like about the Obama campaign so far is that they are not taking prisoners on these issues.
I see that McCain is essentially pinning all his hopes on turning Michigan blue, which would offset a likely red turn in Ohio. It’s an old and vulnerable population in MI, and they are likely to think twice about electing a man who promises to do away with their Social Security.
stature of limitations.
OT via Froomkin I love this:

Glad to see they have their priorities in order.
In 2004 I kept thinking Kerry was going to fire back and hit Bush with several points that were in his favor or bushes negative. Never happened
Dugg by ThomasMifflin….thanks Thomas:>)
To illustrate that McSame is so cool, he keeps his nose hair trimmed.
I think Lieberman took the picture. You don’t want to see the view from where Graham was at the time…
Vote for it on reddit too.
LOL, you’re right, I don’t… :~)
Do not question Lord Cheney’s needs for large aircraft. He has to travel with an entire MASH unit and other assorted personnel and equipment. All well-spent tax dollars, don’t ya know.
how did you get close enough to see??
punaise at 10—
that’s to show he’s our ’daddy’….
and hugh’s link–how come al gore couldn’t make fundraising calls from his office, but cheney can use LARGE government planes for fundraisers? does the rnc pay for it? seriously, i don’t get it.
and why did he need such a large plane?
I distracted him. “Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Obamaman!”
That is so good!
just saw badwater’s comment—forgot about the mash team….waht’s he gonna do when we aren’t paying for it?
Bear in mind that the photo is part of an anti-McSame ad. And it’s actually a pretty good one.

gotta go, take care pups….and seriously, i really want an answer to my 24.
LOL
i think his worst angle is when he’s looking directly into the camera.
bbl
dmac, I think Cheney’s been making so much money since 2001 that he’ll be able to afford a private MASH unit with no problem.
which was meant in responde to barbara at 25
McWain was trying out his new internet chops but confused USB port for poor UBS. thinking he could help his economic guru Phil Gramm dodge some trouble, he accidentally hacked into the pentagon system and sent a few rockets towards Russia.
(none of the above makes any sense whatsoever.)
Prior to Social Security enactment THE number one cause of death of the elderly was hypothermia, then malnutrition and then natural causes.
When these wingers start talking about doing away with social security…. just ask them…… So you want your granny to freeze to death? Or starve to death?
OT, but to give credit when it is due, Nedra Pickler of the AP actually does a very good job in covering the smears of the discredited Corsi book:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..obama_book
I still think that the Obama campaign should push or sue to have the book classified as fiction
It’s not just McCain that won’t see it. lotsa people won’t see it if it’s only on the Internets, no? or am I missing something? Is the idea to put it on the internets and then wait for the cable news shows and even networks to gobble it up and give you, essentially, a free TV commercial?
The Great US Superpower is threatening to send and additional shipment of humanitarian aid if Russia doesn’t pull back from Georgia.

I live in the land of the late Paul Wellstone. Stuff like this raises my antennae and scares the, er, feces out of me.
Gates today: “The United States spent 45 years working very hard to avoid a military confrontation with Russia,” he said. “I see no reason to change that approach today.”
Um.. well, that’s good to know, I guess…
fox news reporters were fired on by georgian troops, up close and personal….the reporters were talking with russian troops in ?goli?
they had to run down the road for their lives. literally.
was on about a half hour ago…wasn’t a pro-georgian report. on fox, couldn’t believe they showed it.
ok, outta here. take care.
so pathetic. there’s really nothing to be done except work with other countries. in the gop’s view, though, that’s pussy foreign policy. so their alternative is ……. what? bluster and bullshit. oh, an an extra shipment of humanitarian aid. can’t more people see that mccain’s vaunted expertise in foreign affairs is 100% unadulterated horseshit? why not?
pawlenty impresses me less and less every time I see him. i hope mccain takes him. seems quite the goof to me.
He’s the Republican’s Republican. Slick. Personable. Majored in faux sincerity. Family values man. Contrast to McCain would be stunning, goofery notwithstanding. Dark hair, white hair. Tall, short. Young, old. And he’s certainly being prepped for something. Which would leave MN with Governor Carol Molnau — she who double-dutied as Lt. Governor and Transportation Goddess, under whose watchful eye the I35 bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River. Well, you can’t stay on top of everything, doggone it!
Christy is upstairs. Bye for now.
The 1933 Business Plot a fascist plot to overthrow FDR and usurp the constitution, referenced today by Blue Texan is embodied and now realized in the “Iraq Oil Plot.” Today Georgia and Russia fight due to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B…..n_pipeline and the placement of missiles in Poland. Meanwhile Rove was in Yalta on July 12th.
Corporate financiers have again raped America. McCain while claiming maverick conservative credentials is another wolf in the hen house. These leaders are myopic oil whores, more concerned with perpetuating energy business interests while shitting on Americans and wiping their asses with the constitution. If Americans buy McCain’s wind swept garbage, what non thinking losers……..

And to top it off, Senior Citizen John McCain pocketed a total of $22,104 in 2006 and $23,157 in 2007 in Social Security income.
With his $60,000/year Navy pension, his earnings from the Senate, and all his wife’s money, does he have to take the Social Security money? Sure, he paid into it, but so did “wealthy senior citizens” whom he wants to buy their own prescriptions.
Up until this year, I liked McCain okay; he was a POW, etc. But to see the numerous double standards the man lives with is beyond the pale and reveals his “straight talk” as a huge fraud.
This is a very smart strategy by the Obama campaign. McCain simply can’t defend allowing “younger workers” to gamble with their SSI accounts and argue that it “protects Social Security”. It increases the risk, places the decision-making of high gains vs. stability in the hands of individuals who are more likely to take risks (younger workers). Or it places it in the hands of accounts managers that have other goals other than the long-term financial well-being of the accounts. We KNOW how “secure” these Big 5 Financial Houses have been.
McCain claims that he doesn’t understand economics. So why should we trust the guy who was thigh-high deep in the early ’90’s Savings and Loan scandals, and who has made such bonehead policy suggestions with the current credit scandals to resolve one of the most important financial issues of the 21st century?
Oh right, he is getting his financial advice from Phil Gramm, the VP of US Operations for United Banc Suisse (UBS) that recently was shown to have illegally sheltered over $12 billion from taxes that should have been paid by wealthy Americans. For a minimum of a $100,000 stake that would be concealed from disclosure through a set of “charitable donations”, bogus business losses, and secret passwords through store-bought cell phones and unlisted foreign numbers the rich could create tax-free foreign accounts in Lichtenstein.
Wonder if that’s why Cindy McCain refuses to reveal her taxes and “charitable donations”?
