In June 1999, McCain said “The only way to increase the yield on Social Security dollars is by allowing workers to make investment decisions for themselves; by empowering American families to invest, in most robust portfolios, a portion of their earnings for Social Security that they would otherwise pay in taxes to Social Security.”[98] In January 2000, he repeated his strong support for creating partially private Social Security accounts.[99] In 2004, he said, “Without privatization, I don’t see how you can possibly, over time, make sure that young Americans are able to receive Social Security benefits.”[100][101]

In April 2008, McCain proposed that seniors with higher incomes should pay higher premiums for government-provided prescription drug benefits (Medicare Part D) as a way to reduce federal spending on health care.[102]

As of May 2008, McCain’s web site says:

John McCain will fight to save the future of Social Security and believes that we may meet our obligations to the retirees of today and the future without raising taxes. John McCain supports supplementing the current Social Security system with personal accounts — but not as a substitute for addressing benefit promises that cannot be kept.[103]

On June 12, 2008, McCain fielded a question in a town hall meeting, saying, “But I’m not for quote privatizing Social Security, I never have been, I never will be.”[104]

On July 7, 2008, McCain criticized the traditional pay-as-you-go financing of Social Security, saying: “Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today. And that’s a disgrace.”[105][106] The next day, he reiterated that Social Security uses current workers’ tax payments to fund current retirees’ benefits, and he said, “That’s why it’s broken, that’s why we can fix it.”[107]

McCain has not offered a specific plan to address the possible Social Security shortfall, but has stated that although he prefers not to raise taxes, all options, including payroll tax increases, are “on the table”.[108]

It allows for a blue background for the text. But shooting up does convey a sense of stature which clashes with the message.

It’s good that McCain is blowing his wad early. Obama has lots of time to respond. McCain is vulnerable on social security, it the anti-McCain ads will be coming on hard, not just from Obama but from the labour movement. He will try to weasel out of what he said, but it’s on tape and will be used against him. What I like about the Obama campaign so far is that they are not taking prisoners on these issues.

I see that McCain is essentially pinning all his hopes on turning Michigan blue, which would offset a likely red turn in Ohio. It’s an old and vulnerable population in MI, and they are likely to think twice about electing a man who promises to do away with their Social Security.

Do not question Lord Cheney’s needs for large aircraft. He has to travel with an entire MASH unit and other assorted personnel and equipment. All well-spent tax dollars, don’t ya know.

Prior to Social Security enactment THE number one cause of death of the elderly was hypothermia, then malnutrition and then natural causes.

Tapes reveal Obama jet “emergency”

The incident involving Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign plane last month was much more serious than the airline or the Federal Aviation Administration said, according to FAA control tower tapes obtained by ABC News.

At the time, an FAA spokesperson said the pilot did not declare an emergency and the airline owner, Midwest Airlines, said safety “was never an issue.”

The tapes, to be broadcast tonight on ABC News’ World News with Charles Gibson, show otherwise.

Just 41 seconds after discovering he no longer had full control of the plane’s up and down movements, the pilot told an FAA air traffic controller “at this time we would like to declare an emergency and also have CFR [crash equipment] standing by in St. Louis.”

And to top it off, Senior Citizen John McCain pocketed a total of $22,104 in 2006 and $23,157 in 2007 in Social Security income.

With his $60,000/year Navy pension, his earnings from the Senate, and all his wife’s money, does he have to take the Social Security money? Sure, he paid into it, but so did “wealthy senior citizens” whom he wants to buy their own prescriptions.

Up until this year, I liked McCain okay; he was a POW, etc. But to see the numerous double standards the man lives with is beyond the pale and reveals his “straight talk” as a huge fraud.

This is a very smart strategy by the Obama campaign. McCain simply can’t defend allowing “younger workers” to gamble with their SSI accounts and argue that it “protects Social Security”. It increases the risk, places the decision-making of high gains vs. stability in the hands of individuals who are more likely to take risks (younger workers). Or it places it in the hands of accounts managers that have other goals other than the long-term financial well-being of the accounts. We KNOW how “secure” these Big 5 Financial Houses have been.

McCain claims that he doesn’t understand economics. So why should we trust the guy who was thigh-high deep in the early ’90’s Savings and Loan scandals, and who has made such bonehead policy suggestions with the current credit scandals to resolve one of the most important financial issues of the 21st century?

Oh right, he is getting his financial advice from Phil Gramm, the VP of US Operations for United Banc Suisse (UBS) that recently was shown to have illegally sheltered over $12 billion from taxes that should have been paid by wealthy Americans. For a minimum of a $100,000 stake that would be concealed from disclosure through a set of “charitable donations”, bogus business losses, and secret passwords through store-bought cell phones and unlisted foreign numbers the rich could create tax-free foreign accounts in Lichtenstein.

Wonder if that’s why Cindy McCain refuses to reveal her taxes and “charitable donations”?
