Conservatives like Hannity love to lecture us on their supposedly strict view of morality — that legal or moral transgressions should never be viewed through a contextual prism.
So when a poor person steals, they insist, society shouldn’t consider their poverty or shitty childhood or addictions. Right is right and wrong is wrong, they drone, and everything else is just lazy, lenient left-wing moral relativism.
This black and white paradigm, of course, never applies to Republicans, including the Republican nominee, who cheated on his wife and ultimately dumped her for his mistress.
Note how Hannity takes into account all kinds of mitigating reasons that McSame would heartlessly betray his disabled wife for a much younger, hotter sorority chick, who happened to be a politically well-connected beer heiress worth millions. Like the fact that he was a POW, for instance.
Because everyone knows that POWs have no choice but to ditch their wives and kids for a little stuff on the side when they return.

My own pop psychology on McCain’s repeated “stupid hot chicks like Obama” ads is that these ads are a projection of how McCain felt about himself when he was Obama’s age. McCain was the “Top Gun” hot-shot Navy pilot who could get (and did get) any girl he wanted, and marital fidelity be damned. It hardly occurs to McCain that Obama in his 40s has better things on his mind than cheating on his wife and two daughters.
- Because you were a POW, you don’t have to show up and work your day job because the welfare of Arizonians don’t count
- Because you were a POW, you get special treatment by the media because the truth doesn’t count
So. Do I have this straight: Lots of people come home from war with PTSD. PTSD has cost lots of marriages. Sometimes one can recover, with help, from PTSD. Sometimes one can not. McCain came home, dumped his wife and children, and ‘courted’ a new younger, wealthier, woman. Which Hannity says is o.k. because of the PTSD. Have I got that right?
So. McCain will be glad to tell us about his therapy(s), right? And how he now has control of his PTSD, has control over his anxieties, never gets angry, never is … PTSDish? Right? And he will have his doctor/psych sign off on this, right?

being held against your will and being tortured is the same thing, no matter if it’s foreigners or your relatives.

came home and acted without ethical character.
now excused of his actions/life choices because of his abuse.
yet people every day who grew up in abusive environments are not given the same ‘pass’…..supposed to rise above it, deal with it.
so, if you volunteer to do it and are trained for the possibility of that happening, you get a pass.
but if you can’t do anything about it and weren’t given any skills to deal with it, you don’t.

Oh, John Edwards has an expensive haircut and 28000 square foot house! But say, if you add up the square footage of McCain’s houses, how’s that come out compared to Edwards? The $500 shoes? And somehow the fact that the affair was what, 6 years after he returned from Nam where he spent 5.5 years in a camp is an extenuating circumstance. What a fucking joke.
