I take a back seat to no one when it comes to my Olympic fandom, but Argonaut may have me beat:
I’ve got my Tivo cranked up to Ramming Speed, recording more than 24 hours a day (two channels at once). I’m not just a Couch Potato, I’m sending down roots.
But I still fast forward the water polo and handball, delete all boxing, and when Synchronized Mascara comes on it will be ignored as well. My real problem will be track and field where I will want to see every second. Starbucks is sending over an IV for me.
Let the madness begin.

I go to sleep with the remote in my hand, ready to switch from channel to channel depending on what they’re showing! I’ve been an Olympic junky since 1960. Thank heaven I’m not the only one!
When I stood up my couch stuck to my ass. So I sat back down.
GO USA
Other than the Olympics the only time I’ve ever obsessively had the TV on was during the Watergate hearings (which actually were, in some ways, more fun… remember Tony Ulasewicz?)
Olympic fever!
watch for me
im nodding off to Maltese Falcon
I’ve even discovered that Oxygen, of all channels, covers the equestrian events… I’m in hog heaven!
Does that qualify as listening to fate?
I think so.
Well, Hoover is telling me he’s ready to snuggle so I’m going to take my young cat and my remote off to bed. Enjoy the rest of the evening’s offerings.
Two words for the swimmers:
Oh. My.
Jane! So glad I’m not the lone Olympics junkie on this blog.
The opening ceremony was cinematically astounding, – and regardless of the political fault lines, the glimpse into China’s culture as they wished to present it was fascinating, enthralling, captivating, light as feather, admirable, a GREAT SHOW and ….a warning too.
Part of me felt like it said: Mr & Mrs America…Meet your new Landlords
The drumming was chilling, astounding, compelling, breathtaking and chilling.
Even Brokaw remarked it was threatening…
None the less it hooked me to Olympics in a way i haven’t felt since i was – as you say- living with my parents!!
I love LIVE tv…and following it on the net through out the night has its lure.
Now I’ll think of the fire pups nodding off watching the final frames as they dip into my dream stuff
GO USA!
I almost feel sorry for the
sleazeballguy…Now that is an Olympic event I can get into! ;-)
Hi, dogi. Long time no see.
Certainly a herculean task…! ;-)
Uncle Ted could actually help the lawyers out a lot with all that sorting. “OK, here’s the date that I told VECO that it was great that they would put a construction crew to work on my house, and they told me not to worry about the bill. . .”
Yep, it was reality TV before there was reality TV.
Two words: plead guilty.
Can you Digg it?
Ehrlichman and Halderman won the gold for Men’s Doubles in the Obstruction of Justice event, didn’t they?
Heh, True! I do pity the fool(s) that will listen to all 10,000 conversations…!
Yeah, right. This is not only a Republican, but Ted Stevens. He would not plead guilty if they had him on video tape actively soliciting a bribe.
Dugg!
Thanks neuro
gee, I hope Ted has stolen enough over the years to pay his attorney’s fees.
more than 67,000 documents and 2,800 audio files that could end up as evidence against the Alaska Republican.
recordings of roughly 10,000 phone conversations.
Two words:
Billable. Hours.
If I was one of his lawyers, I think I’d have contact lenses made with dollar signs superimposed on them….
Remember he is the founding member of the Corrupt Bastards Club…! I’m sure the jury will just adore that…! ;-)
I certainly hope (for their sakes) that the lawyers already have in place liens against all of Sen. Stevens’ assets. That is if they actually intend to get paid for this and it is not simply more wingnut welfare.
LOL to y’all.
now if “Pepe Le Pew” only make couches!
Well, they say chicks love horses. :-)
Heh, leave it to you to see the $ signs…! 8-P
Btw, You’re free at the moment…!
He would claim it was covered by a loophole that John McCain slipped into the Campaign Finance Act.
why in the world would anyone want to pass up Mens Water Polo ?*g*
ok, ok, so I just like the part where they walk out to the pool, sue me.
Marion – PBS’s Horse & Rider has piqued my interest on Equestrian Events, who doesn’t love the horses, but now I want to watch ‘the team’ at work
oh, and here’s some classic Synchronized Mascara with some old friends
‘night Jane and Dogs
Indeed!
Heh, leave it to you to see the $ signs…!
I yam what I yam. *g*
I think I’ll invent those contact lenses – right after I finish up the ones I’m currently working on for dogs – they’ll have cats superimposed on ‘em.
You haven’t seem me because my ass won’t fit thru the door with my new “couch” appendage :)
There is silliness then there is stupidity.
From Think Progress and the Wingnut Olympics Immigrant Bashing competition:
Right-Wing Hate Group Blames Immigrants For Increasing Greenhouse Emissions
They should get the wingnut bloggers to sort out the kerning for Stevens. They are good at that.
Are the Bronze Boys on again tonight, or is gonna be another regular Fashion Wednesday at my house? (Project Runway & Shear Genius)
The Olympics are special…..even admitting that some of the Chinese girls may be too young; even admitting that some athletes are going to dope….. there is something about athletic competition — the best of it — that is a joy to watch. I still grieve for the 1980 USA athletes who prepared and were denied for political reasons from competing. I say…..go for it and make connections and show strength and grace. I guess I’m hopeful that folks in the world might eventually get along.
Hi Jane. I’m actually watching via NBC’s olympics website, having no Tivo to play with. On the other hand, I am only interested in 2 or 3 sports.
Bronze Boys up again, that’s why I put photo of Artemev up (just for you, Teddy).
Olympic gold in the stupid mental contortionism.
Bela Karoly went way out of school on the underage topic last night after the Chinese gymnasts won — Bob Costas actually reached over and grabbed his elbow to get him to shutup, I think, and then they went to break. When they came back, Bela went on about it some more. He clearly does not think the Chinese are playing fair, while Bob knows who’s paying his bills.
I don’t actually “get” the concept of synchronized diving…..like, why?…..but when it works it is so interesting!
Artemev is on my SO’s laminated card; I am partial to Jonathan. But they are all so wonderful! And none of them previously an Olympian! I’m not sure we’ve ever had a team like that medal.
That was funny! I thought Bob was going to choke.
Hi Jane. It was either you or Christy who said three or so weeks ago that Mort Halperin’s involvement in the negotiations for the the final FISA fix was suspect (in response to a WTF comment from me). Damn, Glenzilla fucking nailed it today.
But there are still mysteries. Who, exactly, were the lobbists who wrote “The Compromise,” and how did they manage to sell it to so many not-otherwise-stupid people? Do all of them expect jobs in an Obama administration? What about Obama himself? WTF’s wrong with him?
Like, why not synchronized archery? Or is that an event that I missed? The divers are wonderful.
So what’s Argonaut got against synchronized mascara? Great event, more substance than a McCain “We’re all Andorrans” speech…
I’m still invested in synchronized macarena. But, hey, I’m easy.
Perhaps you wish they’d return to the original Olympics attire?
http://ansmagazine.com/winter0…..discus.jpg
Although that could cause some problems in the uneven bars.
There is no way that Bela can say what he said, no matter how true, without looking like an asshole.
His team did extremely well and lost by a toe nail. It’s the breaks. And, no matter how correct he is about a momentary delay causing the toe nail to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, that’s sports, and Bela knows it.
That said, damn he is good, as are the team he trained.
I don’t actually “get” the concept of synchronized diving…..like, why?
I think the strangest one might be (Winter Olympics) where the competitors cross-country ski, then stop to shoot a rifle at targets, ski some more, etc.
No that’s an event I’ve never seen a Little-League version of.
Two-man luge is pretty strange too.
On the other hand …. I have a sorta-surgical procedure on my spine on Friday and I am glad that I’ll be able to keep the TV tuned to the olympics as I recover all weekend.
luge is cool!
When I was in high school, one of my best friends, a cross-country and track team-mate, went to the modern pentathlon (shooting, horseback-riding, swimming, fencing and running – I think) Olympic training camp at some fort in Texas. 1963, for the 1964 Olympics.
My friend and most of the rest of the aspirants caught mono at the fort. Some died. My friend didn’t, but he was never the runner afterward he had been before.
Also, they are increasing our aggregate water consumption. And, they don’t bring their own water supply with them when they cross the border.
If you think the FISA fix was bad enough… Hello, J Edgar Hoover…
That is extreme F*ckery, folks!
Although that could cause some problems in the uneven bars.
Can you imagine a men’s balance-beam competition?
ouch (and *shudder*)
hate me, i don’t care this time–
i was argonaut and jane a few years back..more than a few.not anymore..not after knowing olympic athletes and coaches.
i kinda hoped jane would pick up on what i was saying in the same comments block/thread last night that argonaut expressed it.
i’m kinda disappointed that there’s not a thread addressing what i said, maybe i needed to be stronger, more explicit, like entertainment tonight.
there’s a whole ‘nuther side to this. and it’s ugly ugly ugly. found out first hand, not one of those ‘heard of’ from someone else stories.
and i wonder sometimes why people don’t want to see it..hard to give up something that brings you joy, i know, been there.
the olympics is a mixed bag.
i am not a doomsday kinda gal, i’m a pollyanna. so, it’s hard to bring up that maybe what the olympic athletes go through and do and have to face and the lives they lead after are not necessarily a good thing or in any way a healthy thing.
so, i’ll disclose why i know this.
former husband, olympic coach was his coach from the age of 6.world champion at the age of 9..national champion over and over and over.,.countless titles and records..missed the olympics by .252 of a point. knew him from the 5th grade on, remet him when i was 36..his sister was one of my best friends on swim team.elite athletes travel in a small circles, knew/know many of them. after we were married, traveled to meets, all coaches knew him and his buds. can’t count the after hours stories and times when they could finally let their hair down, noone around them in their normal lives could relate…one olympian kept her medals in a box under her bed…. best man at our wedding was the olympic coach for his sport.
i’ve sat on decks drinking wine, talked over coffee, hung out at parents’ houses, cookouts, hung out, run around, etc…and the talk always came back to stuff they never talk about, how fucked up it is and how long it took them to have a normal life, how they still didn’t have a normal life…each time wanted to hug them until they couldn’t breathe and fix what had been done to them. absolutely ripped my guts out to listen.
every single one of them has issues from what they had to do to perform at that level.
so, it’s fun, it was fun, to watch, but now, it sucks, knowing what the reality of it is. i watched for a total of a half hour maybe so far, couldn’t watch it more.
ok, i said it. don’t know what good it did to say it. but i hope it does some good somewhere.
cuz someone had to.
nite.
McCain wants to be president so he can win in syncronized wars.
I think the biathalon (ski, shoot, ski) is based on ancient warfare. But I can’t imagine the basis for synchronized diving……I just know that it is beautiful when it works. Remember back in the day when there were those ribbon events…..very pretty, too. It’s all beyond my ken. I just know that I love to watch people who do things well.
Tonight’s snack is only a little tiny bit predictable.
You’ll be plugged in in more than one way, eh, TexBetsy?
godspeed!
Brought to you by some extreme (fascist) fuckers!
Luckily, men tend to not do the balance beam.
Thanks! I am plugged in to a muscle stim machine for 40 minutes every night!
I hope that goes well for you, Betsy
Good luck with it, Betsy
“I’m concerned with the way the attorney general frames the problem,” German said.
Pornography! He should try that one next time.
Actually based on modern alpine ski troops.
Luckily, men tend to not do the balance beam.
Not *sane* men, anyway.
And good luck this weekend!
Good luck Betsy.
good night firepups.
Get well soon and good luck, Betsy!
Nite Betsy.
it was added as a pr event…not kidding.
Thanks y’all. This is what they’re doing Friday. Outpatient.
The Child Labor Olympics Gold metal: From the Int’l Herald Tribune
Thank you Jane.
One of the changes is to allow the use of informants on national security investigations and as German pointed out later on in regards to the NSL’s…
Ugly story…
Can’t get that link to work.
Howie Klein judges the upcoming Alaska Democratic Primary political funding gymnastics championship.
He gives Diane Benson a “10.”
They also do most of the labor on the cacao plantations in West Africa (keep this in mind next time you eat European chocolate which is made almost exclusively from West African Cacao). Child labor, including slave labor, is rampant in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, but we continue to turn a blind eye.
tex bet–what was your injury that caused you to need these treatments?
was going to email and ask, but since you brought it up again, thought i would just ask here.
email me!
tex betsy at gmail
Thank you for sharing what you know. I don’t know any Olympians, but I know lots of kids (including my own) who did some gymnastics, some diving, some soccer, some ice skating, some track&field. I always thought that the cream rose to the top…..but I also saw parents just drive their kids. My own kids and their friends got a great deal from their sports and training….learned a lot of discipline and learned about winning and losing. My daughters, in their 30s, are still active in soccer and running and sports in general. Anyone with a bit of common sense can see how few kids will ever rise to the elite, but it’s good, I think, that kids learn various sports and test themselves and then go on to live normal lives. The rare athlete will turn out to be an Olympian. Realism called for.
tex–if you still have my email, let me know the answer. good luck on your treatment. i was a guinea pig for years, used to be on a cane, not any longer.
take care all.
nite
night dmac.
Thanks…..I couldn’t find the info quickly on Wiki or elsewhere. I just knew it was based on something whereas I cannot imagine a basis for synchronized diving (although it brought me a snicker re Butch Cassidy & Sundance, dontcha know!)
Your post was interesting. Thank you for sharing.
OT, can someone find me a link to Tbogg’s heart-breaking story of his first basset hound that he had to put down?
With the passing of Satchmo, I would like to read what I thought was the most beautiful eulogy for any living being I’ve ever read.
Thanks.
J.
thanks, you have no idea how hard it was to write that. like saying there is no santa.
is a fine line with athletics, i don’t know where it should be drawn, even college athletics gives me a sour taste, too much firsthand knowledge. where the line should be drawn-i really don’t know. i really don’t.
that’s why it’s so hard, it’s so pervasive in our society and can be a healthy thing, and can be so destructive.
dunno. don’t know if i ever will.
nite.
you’re welcome, naming names seemed like it would be a betrayal of a kind. just know, it’s all true. that and more.
Howie Klein judges the upcoming Alaska Democratic Primary
I notice Howie gives a lot of credit to some guy named Phil Munger. You two guys oughta get together…. *g*
707!
Hey CT. Good fucking God!!!
Thanks for sharing that. Shades of 1962, when J. Edgar Hoover was sharing stories of Martin Luther King’s private life with tabloids, and dressing up on a nurse’s uniform to go downtown.
Did you know tha that the FBI started out as “pecker checkers”? They were charged with checking troops coming back from leave for VD.
Sigh!
Howie knows that one day, he’ll get this Munger guy to throw his own hat in the ring. And we will all go broke making him a Congressman.
Cloud-seeding.
You shared well and meaninfully. Heartfully. Thanks for that. We all have a lot to learn.
Breaking News
Bill Gwatney, Chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party was murdered by a gunmen in the party offices by a lone gunmen, who was later killed in a shootout by Arkansas police. Officials identified the shooter as Timothy Dale Johnson, 50, of Searcy.
Tim Gwatney, Chair of Arkansas Democratic Party, murdered
Johnson, apparently was fired from his job at Target on Wednesday morning. He had left some graffiti on a wall, although whether he was fired before that or because of it is unclear. The content of that graffiti is also not known.
Gwatney killer fired from Target
“This is Abkhazian land,” one of them said. Another laughed that Georgians retreating from Abkhazia had received “American training in running away.”
Ah yes, the brilliant power projection politics of the Neo-con artists.

I don’t believe in cloud seeding…… heh
Okay, so then it’s done…..where do I send a check?
Heh, I knew about the MLK and nurse factoids, but, I’d never heard about that last one…!
“Pommel” horse would be a scream … *g*
Evenin’ all !
Once again, OT, can someone find me a link to Tbogg’s heart-breaking story of his first basset hound that he had to put down?
With the passing of Satchmo, I would like to read what I thought was the most beautiful eulogy for any living being I’ve ever read.
Thanks.

((((( ccmask )))))
Where’ve you been hiding ?
Here’s the deal. It is one thing to make great personal sacrifices to achieve a goal, if you are an adult. It is quite another to have someone make that decision for you, when you are a child.
I am not talking about the run of the mill sacrifices made to make the high school varsity, but the St. Francis of Assisi like sacrifices made by some of these young swimmers and gymnasts.
Petro!
Those 2 rungs – ouch dude
I’ll be sending you energy all day Friday, Betsy …
Definitely not a sport for the well endowed.
My nine year old son got so excited when the US women beat Norway in beach volleyball, he took off his clothes and ran around the house yelling for about 20 minutes. I foresee a very difficult adolescence. But it was pretty funny.
((( newt )))
… they could call it “The Gong Show” …
Well, it should be interesting to say the least.
oldgold at 106–was on my way out–
once again, you’ve summed up my twenty paragraphs into a few.
thanks.
sweet dreams and
GO USA! (like i said last night, yes, i mean it)
hitting the feathers now. crickets and katydids and tree frogs calling.
I am fading, so I will bid all adieu. Take care and enjoy the competitions.
… that’s precisely why I don’t watch the Olympics, but I don’t dissuade avid viewers from doing so …
forgot–

don’t know which thread you mean, there were some at tbogg’s place and one that jane did here at the lake.
google page has a few of them. choose the one you wanted.
G’nite dmac
armstand back double-somersault with one and a half twists in the free position, no splash (’natch) except for that rat bastoid bulgarian judge. who cudda anticipated his white linen suit turns transparent when wet
I’m disappointed that Canada hasn’t medaled at all this Olympics yet…!
Suzanne!
Is he wearing an Angorra sweater ? *g*
((((( Suz )))))
Where’s the rule book on rational parenting? One of my daughters was district champ at hurdles and played soccer in college……and enjoys sports well into her 30s. Other daughter was state champ in softball and just ran her first marathon .. joyfully. I grew up when there were few sports allowed for girls….so I played tennis. Knowing reality, we all just enjoyed. I just don’t get that parents drive their children in sports. So wrong, when sports can be so enjoyable.
Heh, there ya go again, picking on the Bulgarians…! ;-)
Yeah Balls to the Beam! kinda like squash another ball smashing event.
I would like to s
ee part of the maladministrations punishment the balance beam in speedos.
pups! i’m in carmel by the sea and just finished a forking fantabulous chinese take out dinner – best i’ve ever had.
npb is spoiling me rotten.
All our good athletes are in Vancouver,
drinkingtraining hard for 2010 …Every Suzanne dive is a good dive and well appreciated…..travel happily!
npb lives in Carmel ? Is she Clint Eastwood’s neighbor ? *g*
I know many athletes through close friends and they all seem to be doing it to please someone besides themselves … first their parents, then their schools, sponsors, etc. There is never a sense of personal satisfaction, despite their canned speeches …
Many girls who train for synchronised swimming get serious back injuries and suffer lifelong pain …
I had first cousins that competed in the ‘76 Olympics in sculling and rowing for Canada, they didn’t have to travel far for ‘em either, they were from Carleton Place, ONT, just outside of Ottawa…!
What was the name of the Vancouver snowboarder who got the drug results thrown out 6 years ago because he’d merely been at a “wild party” where there was a lot of ambient pot smoke?
this one wasn’t Satchmo. This was his first basset. One that Mrs. Tbogg bought with Tbogg was out of town. It was supposed to be her dog, but the dog chose Tbogg.. claimed him as his own.
I’m such a fan of Tbogg’s writing. I come for the humor and more often than not stay for the erudition and the humanity.
Ross Rebagliati
A bit more on the Gwatney killing in Arkansas.
Apparently the killer had a blow-out at Target about a narrow hallway on Wednesday morning, and his rage escalated after a store meeting.
Johnson rage started at Target
The grafitti had nothing to indicate anger at Gwatney…so it’s not clear why he decided to drive to Democratic HQ and specifically insisted on seeing “the chairman”.
Hooray! Just popped in to see if you were around, Suzanne. *waves hi, all* What time can I expect you tomorrow?
hi laura – i dunno… travel time from when i wake up (laughing)
Per the Wikipedia:
I’ll try to find a reference on the VD assignment.
That works for me. I”ll have a lunch/afternoon snackies ready for you. I’m about a 3-3.5 hr drive from Salinas (or will you be going up 1? It’s certainly prettier…and about an hour more). You’ll want to get through Novato before 3, or you’ll be crawling through Sonoma Co.
i hope to be up by 9 or 10ish and hit the road (i am gonna have to convince npb that i dont eat breakfast) i’ll give ya a call when i’m on the gg bridge so we can gauge time from there.
Jet Suzanne how is NPB’s auto accident injuries healing? Looking feeling getter?
sounds great. Looking forward to seeing you and Token. Hi and hugs to NPB. I missed news of accident. Hope she’s mending easily.
G’nite all.
Hey and nite laura
I didn’t doubt ya, wigwam! I just said I hadn’t heard about it…! ;-)
Aloha, Laura!
Suzanne how is NPB, Typos oops. Goes she know a carmel attorney Alexander Henson who was on their water board?
npb looks mahvahlous and shows no sign of her black eyes and broken nose. woman is a fast healer (she claims she just troweled on the make up but i know better)
she said “yes, i’m afraid i do”
*gasp* npb was in an accident ?
Very happy to hear she’s healing so well … {{{{{{{ npb }}}}}}}
Bwahahaha … she really is all better …
