The world's dumbest political ad -- the one put out this week by the McCain campaign talking about Obama's celebrity again -- ended with an aging piece of film humor: a clip from Wayne's World featuring Wayne and Garth bowing and chanting, "We're not worthy!"
Normally, filmic types ignore such thefts because, well, it's just not worth the hassle. But according to the McCain website, Mike Myers isn't:
Unfortunately, the final clip of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey doing their 'we're not worthy' bit from Wayne's World has spurred a celebrity backlash. Myers had his people call the campaign to demand that the video be removed from YouTube for copyright violation. Apparently, we are not, in fact, worthy.
Nope. You're not. Sorry. Any campaign that would try to establish its hipness cred by playing a clip from 1992 is just ... lame.
Is it possible to dumb down our political discourse any further than the McCain campaign is doing?

Don’t ask that question, David.
McSame will find a way to do it!
Yes.
I know, simple answers, etc …
Party On Garth!!
Senator McCain?
Please sign here for your latest shipment of FAIL!
LMAO.
Schwing!
I dunno. Things may truly have hit the bottom when there are commercials where Paris Hilton sounds smarter than McCain.
there is no bottom, you’ll see
Don’t sell ‘em short, it’s just getting started.
Weird and jarring ad right after a war, and right after McCain made some rather out of place, provocative, and risky, recommendations that might have turned it into a major crisis.
Waitaminute - this ad is for real?
McC must have 7 year old children doing his ads. They are childish and really stupid and I don’t get the point of them. But, of course, I’m not too hip.
Oh, but there’s always tomorrow.
*singing*
The dumb will come out . . . tomorrow.
Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, there’ll be dumb.
Yyyup.
lemmesee, mccaint’s the guy wit an overabundance of experience, right?!
guilty as charged, then.
i mean, he’s not running for king, or is he? hmmmm.
poetic justice: using a film that’s so “over” to sue a candydate who’s so “over”
dum & dummer
i can’t stand much more of this .. stuff .. you wizards find.
shame on you David, & thanks.
i gotta go. lost my brain somewhere in the Obama & race factor aisle, & have ta go back to retrieve what’s left of it.

Any campaign that would try to establish its hipness cred by playing a clip from 1992 is just …
lame.thinking they’re right up to date?Hep cats, those McCrazies…
McSame et al seem to have another thing in common with the Bushies. Total ignorance of the law
it’s already been dude.
Wow. Wow. What a terrible ad.
If my memories are working correctly, then the Rs have always had some problems with the “hipness factors” usually being somewhere fifteen to twenty years behind the curve.
McCain’s first movie reference was to Dr. No (1962). He backtracked a little with The Ten Commandments (1956). Now, he’s up to Wayne’s World (1992). There might have been another I’m forgetting. At any rate, with luck he just might catch up to the present before he completes a second term.
Maybe he’s just practicing defying it in case he should win
To clarify, it’s “not ready for prime-time,” i.e., not a TV ad. Internet only.
Hey, McCain’t was characterized by Ellen Goodman (correctly, in my opinion) as being stuck in 1968. His cultural references always seem to be way stale. Maybe by inauguration day he’ll join the 21st Century…
Pride in Ignorance, McCain 2008.
-G
Don’t forget the continued homages to Birth of a Nation.
-G
It’s worse than that: not ignorance but disrespect.
He had a starring role in that, didn’t he? There’s another campaign slogan, “McCain, he was something before electricity.”
It is because McCain has nothing else.
“McWain’s World, McWain’s World..”
I should have seen that one coming.
The ads are targeted at those with the same mentality as those making them, iow, yer basic Rethug.
“Good call”
OT NYMEX crude oil future is at $113.01. The conflict in Georgia had zero effect. I get the feeling that speculators are gradually unwinding their positions but how far oil will go and if this is all some big manipulation in anticipation of the Presidential elections remains to be seen.
Is it possible to dumb down our political discourse any further than the McCain campaign is doing?
Possible? Oh ya, very much so!
I thought myself a fairly good writer with a vivid imagination until punaise.
7O7!!!!!
This attempt at dumbing down is a reflection of what mccaint thinks of the American voters.
Tell THAT to your already dispirited & deflated Repubble acquaintances… from a safe distance, of course.
don’t confuse the occasional capture of random synapse firings for anything more than that.. :~)
George Bush: still putting the ‘W’ in McWain
Riiiiiiiight.
i wish mike meyers had put as much effort into the love guru as he did sinking mcmuffin’s new video.
Now that I think about it, I should have reworded that. These guys would see it as a challenge.
Plus la tout lemonde c’est meme la vachon dupuis.
Don’t know wha that says, but it looks like we are having an insider chat in French.
-G
Hey McCain, where’s the beef? ha ha ha
nice accent, by the way. :~)
A sphincter says what? “My friends!”
you have a retraining program for the fired synapses, or are they just out the door?
“Zang!!!”
Are you questioning John McCain’s integrity??
some say “preview” is for self-editing. I scoff in their general direction.
New Ian up
Kindly use a handkerchief when you scoff.
at the mccain website link–they won’t let me ‘rate’ the video..said i already voted..
I suspect a major purpose of the ad is to keep repeating, as they have in several ads, that Obama would raise taxes on everyone with incomes $42,000/year and above, plus on seniors. They’re both outright lies, and several reporters/organizations have said so for over a week, but they keep repeating it. The stupidity of the ad doesn’t matter.
It is also true that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11.
Ice cough
you scoff
we all scoff
at Isikoff.
Question to wrinkley==
are you going to PAY for using the video, or is it OK to steal it?
In a country where the candidate’s race may be the deciding factor, it may be that underestimating the intelligence of the electorate isn’t an underestimation at all. I sure hope McCain doesn’t have the last laugh.
