Just like going home to your parent’s house can instantly turn you into a sulking 14 year old , so the Olympics makes me feel like I’m watching Munich ’72 all over again. The minute I hear that Olympics theme song, I’m right back there reliving Olga Korbut, Mark Spitz, and the US team’s rejection of their silver medals — the crucible of sports and politics and the massacre of the Israeli athletes that riveted everyone.
The Olympics one of the only thing I get really nationalistic about. USA all the way. Which was why having George Bush running around patting people’s butts is so irritating — let us come together once every 4 years and root for the USA, Republican and Democrat, without having to watch politicians using athletic events as photo opportunities to gin up their approval ratings. (And yes, I’d feel the same way if it was a Democrat.)
Now every time I see those stupid volley ball girls I’m annoyed. It’s kinda like Harold Ford in ’06. If we’ve gotta lose one….
Oh and Michael Phelps is a monster. Just awesome.

About Firedoglake
This is the only time when I really miss having a TV. Love the Olympics, used to watch them obsessively when I was a kid.
I’m all about the Bronze Boys, our super gymnasts!
Yeah what was up with that? They were supposed to suck, and didn’t.
I love the women’s. It’s always my favorite. What must it feel like to fly?
Unreal, isn’t he, that Phelps? Really does feel like the buzz about Spitz all over again.
Except for the lack of pr0n star-like mustaches…
Same stupid old white men ruling the world, though, deploying economic hit men just as they did nearly 40 years ago.
I used to be an Olympics obsess- O, but now I’man Obama obsess-O!
Obama takes a five point lead in Alaska! Fairbanks’s GOP mayor endorses Obama.
My secret: when I was young my swimming coach wanted to put me on an Olympics track. My parents said no, having a good idea of what would be involved, but didn’t tell me about it until I was much older. My chief rival at the time was Debbie Myers who later went Olympic. Mark Spitz was already a goD to us at swim meets.
Sprout and his friend took turns being all four swimmers on the freestyle relay team today. I’m so proud.
Wow that Nastia Lukin is incredible. American gymnasts never have that perfect build but she does. Both parents gymnasts. Must have something to do with it.
Steppin’ up to get the job done. Great performance. Lotta heart there. We can be very proud of those lads. And they’re prolly walking 4 feet off the ground.
Must be Midnight in Alaska for the GOP.
I was just watching video of the japanese softball team. Wow. They are tough looking! and china is whipping venezuela right now.
One thing I object to – if they are going to ban softball from the olympics, can they please take water polo out, too? We never had to watch it when ABC had the contract – what nimbob at NBC thought a sea of bobbing heads made good television?
My greatest Olympic moment was watching Bob Beamon, in 1968, become the first long jumper to pass the length of 28 and 29 feet with one leap. Neither distance had ever been reached and he shattered an Olympic record that to this day stands.
Who else had a crush on Nadia?
Come clean.
;~P
That’s a coupla months away akshully.
Hey jacqrat
I don’t mind the Water Polo so much, but they have this thing now that looks like Water Polo without the water. I fail to get the point.
*jumping, waving both arms* Me! Me! Me! Ain’t too shabby now, neither.
The synchronized diving is kinda new, innit? Beautiful.
oh, that “handball” thing? that’s like dodgeball mixed with field hockey on a bad day
…and speedo’s that tend to rise?
Which is sorta scary, being as so many of them are fucking blood-sucking, lifeless, but unkillable vampires.
The men’s gymnastic team exceeded all expectations. It was quite a show, especially the high bar routines!
Phelps is the perfect swimming machine: long arms, big hands and feet. Comparing what he is doing this Olympics to what Spitz did is apples and oranges. Spitz didn’t have to swim nearly the heats that Phelps is swimming, and he wasn’t examined, measured, and tested to the nth degree to get max times from each lap the way modern day swimmers are.
So far so good for the women’s gymnastic team. Dang, but those Chinese leotards are fugly. And if the gymnasts from China will all be 16 this year I will eat my shoe.
Is there summer curling?
I’m presuming that outburst was in response to my query…
You, or her?
;~P
The Olympics hasn’t been the same to me since the IOC dropped bull-fighting to placate Muammar al-Gaddafi.
And the players are wearing frilled sweat bands, or the “ball” has a bunch of tails.
But then, in the Winter Games, I love the curling. So it may be me.
ME ME ME ME!!!
and … dreamy sigh.. Mary Lou Retton.. Oh wait, I was out of college by then. Nevermind!
That was an exceptional one. Even more recently when I’ve seen it, it really does look like he’s flying for a moment.
Another of my favorites—
Seoul, 1988: Carl Lewis getting the handoff from Dennis Mitchell and torching the track, 4by100 relay. The track relays might be my favorite events.
What, your libido went south when you got outta college? *g*
I was 14 in ‘76
Need I say more?
Michael Phelps is such an amazing athlete that even the soul-crushing presence of George W Bush didn’t stop him from winning two gold medals and breaking the world records in the process.
Yeah, but it looks fun to play unless you’re the goalie. Speaking of which, that’s the sport and position that gave us Hakeem Olajuwon.
Michael Phelps has an adorable dog, too.
Back when the Olympics was a showcase for Warsaw Pact dentistry.
Oh that dog rocked.
In my browser the photo is cropped just above that.
My thought exactly when I saw her on the unevens.
I just wish we could see the fencing. Some of my favorite scenes in the movies are the sword fights, like Erroll Flynn. With super slo-mo, we might actually be able to see what’s happening.
Even in ‘72, this stuck with me as a major injustice, now atoned for, sort of.
snip
Gorgeous!
Oh Mickey
you’re so pretty
can’t you understand.
It’s guys like you
Mickey
ooh what you do
Mickey
Phelps just won his 5th gold medal as ESPN just reported!
All atheletes are drug addicted wife beaters.
(Ducking under keyboard.)
Wait – did I miss his fourth? Earlier today?
I’ll be the contrarian. While the Olympics provides opportunities for athletes to advance their careers, it is also directly linked to fascism. Sponsored by Multi-National (Tax-Dodging American) Mega-Corporations bent on the destruction of the planet for profit and sanctioned by governments what else can one call it?
That it is held in China, oppressor of its own people and the People of Tibet, and that many so-called first world nations have decidedly turned a blind eye to this fact, speaks to a great hypocrisy.
Now back to our regularly scheduled program.
NO! Youngster… Just bear in mind that old age & treachery shall always prevail over youth & skill!
I kinda enjoyed the Chinese vs USA water polo match the other day. But I’m the type of person who likes just about any kind of athletic competition.
I can’t even watch the balance beam. It’s just terrifying.
That’s what the announcer said… His 5th! The 4th was the 200m Butterfly and the 5th was the 4X200m freestyle…!
Thanks CT, but I like to watch it. Last nite, Jane led the way of speaking about what’s going on without giving up the details…Follow the Leader. Please.
Why did you do that?
And, Jane, to be fair…he didn’t have the balls to pat her butt. You saw him sorta swat her lower back.
Never pick a fight with an old man, cuz he’ll just kill ya.
Email wisdom I got a month or so ago.
Don’t want to be a spoiler — just talking with someone on west coast and I guess they’re not seeing it live like we are — but all Michael Phelps’ medals are world records.
That’s insane.
How about that 41 year old swimmer (Dara Torres) as part of the womens 4X100 taking a silver. As she is quoted saying, “The water doesn’t know how old you are when you go it.”
Um, live. I think not. As far as I know it’s about a 12 hour delay for the east coast.
Jon Stewart claimed it was the best decision of his entire presidency.
My humble apologies…! I wasn’t aware the race hasn’t aired yet!
Doing flips and jumps on a four inch wide beam 3 feet up off the floor. I love watching it but cannot begin to imagine actually trying to do it.
Yep. And she fights every day to get tested to keep the hounds away.
She is a specimen.
I didn’t go to yoga tonight (Jerome got me into Bikrams) so I could sit here and eat red licorice with the poodles and watch the Olympics like a true couch potato.
Thanks for sharing the experience.
China is about twelve hours different. Right now its 11:41 AM Wednesday in Hong Kong.
With that lovely JS smirk? :)
Too bad he doesn’t show that kind of decisioness in other areas. :(
Yep, it’s almost noon tomorrow in Beijing.
I was there when Eric Heiden won his 5th gold.
I believe Europe gets to see Olympics live, but not U.S.
Mark Spitz trained for the ‘72 Olympics in our neighborhood pool )Portage Park, Chicago).
My 50th birthday resolution was to go off the high platform, but they closed it the year before
:(
But I can still swim laps there for a $20 annual surcharge
Like my friggin property tax isn’t tnough.
Anyways we missed the opening ceremonies and I am sick of hearing about it.
The Chinese are awesome synchronized divers
And yes, Michael Phelps is a monster.
I think some events, like the swimming that’s on now, are live because they’re so heavily promoted here in the US, and US tv rights stir the drink for the IOC.
Don’t know about the gymnastics being live though —9am balance beam [shudder]!
Swimming records all over the place. I heard someone say today that maybe they need to re-measure the pool. I laughed out loud. But is it the fancy suits, the depth of the water……or is the pool maybe off by a bit? Funny.
The most amazing single thing about China is that it is 5 time zones wide, but the time is dictated to be the same in the entire country. Grand to be a authoritarian state.
You’re forgiven. I read here, I think, how NBC is replaying stuff for the west coast so it is in Prime Time. What ever that means. I went to bed at 11:00 right after Phelps won his 3rd Gold Medal. 11:00 is only Prime Time on FDL.
Gymnastics will be on here later…FYI.
I’m watching Women’s Diving now.
So…
Frictionless water. New tech development.
I was there when Eric Heiden won his 5th gold….pregnant, freezing and needing to pee…..but I watched it happen.
I have been watching with my nine year old ethnic Chinese son. Tonight he was mad at the women’s synchronized divers for not doing better, so announced he will only cheer for China for the rest of the games. He still adores Phelps, though. I know there are political issues(I am mad that the “cute” girl lipsynched the song)but those are lifelong issues for my family, ones we discuss and try to help our son understand.
I also agree those Chinese gymnasts are no way 16.
Lots of feeds are live on nbcolympics.com
Yeah, sorry Janie, I kinda like a nice ass.
They are usually connected to a great set of legs.
Just my opinion, YMMV.
East Coast gets some of the events live. NBC got the IOC to move the swimming finals to the morning so that they could broadcast them during East Coast prime time.
I wish. We have to wait two years for that.
My mother in law curled. I’d never heard of curling until I got married.
Small concession considering US is paying for broadcast thru advertising, etc.
Two random observations:
1. If the gymnastics scores aren’t going to make any sense to the casual observer, why don’t they go all out and throw in pi and square roots?
2. When did women’s gymnastics become a sport for actual women? It doesn’t look as much like kiddie-porn as it usually does.
I don’t understand the age rules, but the Chinese girls were wonderful……the Aussies, too! And delightful to see the Mexican girls do so well. I think the Olympics are a good thing. Yes, all the world problems will go on, but it is nice to see athletes just go out and do their thing. The American guy gymnists were so happy to take bronze — fun to see. And Phelps is just a natural joy bringer….so lanky…..a big puppy having fun ding what he does.
The old man of Alaska politics – Via Think Progress:
Really? Money is involved?
It also makes those large scale staged productions go alot smoother too.
-G
It’s the suits. They’re performance-enhancing by almost any definition. And parts of them probably add a little to your buoyancy, which is key–the higher you are in the water, the faster you swim.
The pool is also a factor, but less so. It’s a “fast” pool, meaning that it’s deep and wide, so you don’t get your waves reflected back at you as much, which slows you down. Almost all of the pools for international competition are like that.
No link, I am BBQu’ing, but there was quite a stir about some of the young ladies on the Chinese Gymnastic team not being 16 years old, therefore of legal age to compete, yet they all showed up with proper passports.reports were that some were only 14, maybe younger.
Actually, I saw this on the MSM coverage , now that I think about it.
The gymnast has to turn 16 within the calendar year that the Olympic Games are held. So, some of them could be 15, so long as they have a birthday by Dec 31. I still say there’s no way some of those girls are old enough.
It is somewhat of an advantage to have younger gymnasts competing-fewer years competing means less wear and tear, they are smaller and lighter and so fly farther, they’re younger and fearless, less likely to have been significantly injured.
Yes, but what does seeing GWB grab it do for you?
I believe I commented on that aspect in real time. Too tired to link. Ruined MarionInSavannah’s thrill.
The pool is 50% deeper than any previous Olympic pool. Three metres deep. It makes for less tubulance. Why didn’t somebody do that earlier?
I’d enjoy watching men’s volleyball more if Dalhauser didn’t look so much like James Carvell.
Wally has spoken. He and Ted haven’t gotten along for about, uh, for a long time.
Um, who do I speak to about the men’s volleyball uniforms?
Girls in bikinis — but lads in jams and sleeveless tees?
Nobody spent $40 billion on Olympics before.
Did you see the boy Yao carried around during the opening ceremonies, the one who saved a bunch of people during the earthquake? They said he was 9, I would have sworn 4-5. Maybe the girls are 15.
That’s interesting.
Think Billy Corgan.
Works for me.
Bob Costas said Michael Phelps is double-jointed at the knee, which can’t hurt in the pool.
Bela Karoly just said: “Boris Karloff can’t smell my shit.”
-G
That’s only because Yao’s so freaking big!! It made the kid look tiny and younger by comparison. Put the Chinese girls next to any other country, they look MUCH younger. Even Bela was talking about it with Costas, but there’s nothing you can do, they all have passports saying they’re of age.
in china, they live at a ‘training center’…..leave home at a young age.
i have mixed feelings about the olympics, so, i’ll leave it at that. got to know too much about it, tainted how i see it now.
i hope they all do what they’ve been trained to do. and wish them a happy and healthy normal life when it’s over, and people around them that can teach them how to do that, too.
for old time’s sake–GO USA!!
NITE
It makes me wish that he had the least bit of self control, seeings how he is representing 300 million people and seeings as he is supposedly the leader of the free world and the only Super Power on the planet.
I don’t have to worry about that, I am just a nobody mechanic with an attitude, seeing someone older than I am, who happens to have a nice ass.
I agree, Teddy! Let’s get with the program…….some skimpy beach gear would be nice.
but the less turbulance thing seems pretty basic, now that somebody has done it.
As far as $40 billion, I’m sure if Bush had been allowed to have an Olympics, it would have cost us $90 bilion, wouldn’t have been done on time, the pools would leak, Blackwater would have tazed over 1,500 people by now, and the records would mostly be in the number of athletes finding a way to bribe somebody on their UAs.
Night dmac.
Agree with you on Olympics. Professional ballet dancers eat 1200 cal/day, but at least it’s art and they get a career out of it. I’d guess female gymnasts eat even less. Point is to starve them so they appear skinny, breastless, non menstruating. It’s a fantasy that I find less than appealing. And then it’s over.
forgot to add-the gymnasts-they start the chinese athletes younger–delays development..
There’s also something about frictionless water. I googled it but none of the results reminded me of something I think I’d seen awhile ago. Perhaps an additive?
Hw did you know Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite punk band? I don’t think I’ve written about them here – or anywhere…
Ouch! Sad, isn’t it. Hope Obama can bring us back from the brink. The rest of us haven’t taken to the streets yet.
I meant to link to this.
Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi.
-G
Oh, and I have swum and done gymnastics in competition. I admit to not liking to watch any sport, esp the ones I do. But they have all gotten so OTT that it’s no longer possible to even tolerate them.
Except that when they were in the junior division, or something, in China a year ago, their ages were listed in the state media as 13. Which makes it hard for them to turn 16 anytime in 2008.
A respectable poll came out today, putting Obama ahead in Alaska by 5 points.
But, some go on to run successful gymnastics schools just as most girls who train for ballet go on to run local dance studios. I think the ice skaters who go on to the Icecapades probably have the best chance of actually making some money.
The first and only piano song I learned to play in ‘76-’77 was “Nadia’s theme”. As an 8y/o kid who would rather be wading in the creek catching catfish with bare hands, that Romanian gymnist had some effect.
McCain has spent no money yet in Florida, either.
I’m starting to wonder if Schmidt has a strategy beyond “Obama is other.”
“Some.” The rest have lived truly warped lives for their 15 min of nonfame.
Googling Bob Costas, I discover he is older than I. So that must be a toupee, huh?
Oh, and as near as I can tell, running a successful gymnastics school in the US today amounts to being a ruthless sadist. There’s no accounting for taste.
The Alaska GOP is in utter disarray. If we blow this opportunity, we’ll never get another. Nor will we deserve it.
Hard to keep up with everyone — and I’ve had to skip posts as I’m packing and watching the swimming. Hey All!
Go-bama!
I think it will remain “other,” but there are more “others” to roll out.
You know where this is going. And they haven’t even begun with his wife.
Weasel fur has been cheap for five or six years now.
“Obama is
othern word.”They will flat out say it soon.
From Matt Stoller, we have exciting news from Colorado:
It’s keeping me up late night too. With a 12 hour difference the competitions are between 9pm and 9am. My favorite moments were the men’s swimmiing relay gold they stole from the French, the first round of women’s team gymnastics, men’s team gymnastics bronze, the US Netherlands soccer game which we lost, and the US China men’s basketball… just wait till Kobey starts hitting the threes!
every single olympic athlete and coach i have ever known and met were screwed up in a major way. a myriad of ways, takes years to get a ‘life’, most never get one. even ones that get jobs etc., are still screwed up mentally from the things you have to do and face daily to be an elite athlete.and the things you don’t ‘get’ from being one. there are exceptions of course, but i have never met one. did hear of some though.
sorry, i didn’t want to ruin the happy thread, i keep skipping the olympic threads on purpose, but wanted to respond and remind people what they’re watching happen. give them their due, in triplicate. they’ve sacrificed more than you realize. more than they realize, until later. and what shrink is gonna be able to help them with it? unique world they’re in.and they’re not gonna be around the support system they had to train anymore.the world they’ve lived in for years doesn’t exist in the real world. it’s a tough thing.
i used to watch with bated breath–i was an athlete. now, just think it’s tragic…college sports, same thing, though not on as intense of a level.
i’m done, some things are best left for someone else to tell.
brings tears to my eyes to even talk about it.
sweet dreams and
GO USA!! i mean it. no snark.
And/or colorizing. I’m also ‘52 (nice to say it that way!) and finally getting a bit of noticeable gray. Not many this age have less.
Phelps is 5 for 5, 5 Golds, 5 world records. I’m agog. Go Baltimore!
I’ve got my Tivo cranked up to Ramming Speed, recording more than 24 hours a day (two channels at once). I’m not just a Couch Potato, I’m sending down roots.
But I still fast forward the water polo and handball, delete all boxing, and when Synchronized Mascara comes on it will be ignored as well. My real problem will be track and field where I will want to see every second. Starbucks is sending over an IV for me.
Yeah, I love track and field. Probably because I ran seriously in high school. And they’re also amongst the purest sports. Were you fastest or furthest? Excellent, you win. No arguments, no judges, just a stopwatch or a tape measure.
Save me a spot.
Good snicker. Did you mean synchonized macarena?
Rowing is the same, except there’s teamwork, like in a track relay. There are no field event “relays” in the Olympics, though.
G’night DMac. It’s considerate of you to choose your times to smack. :)
You’re a good one, for sure.
Kos poster has an eerie post showing the despicable attacks on Obama by the creepy, young woman obsessed war-monger McCain.
-G
Is John McCain obsessed with young women? His history indicates that may be the case.
-G
Hafta say, this is the first Olympics that I honestly am not interested in, in the least. China hosting is pretty much the shark-jump that confirms what an international joke these “pure” games are.
Keep waving your flags. It makes Bush happy.
Turning in. Good night everyone.
Yeah, and sometimes we lay down our swords and just watch some TV.
Sweet dreams, hipchick!
No spoilers for us west coasters on delay please !
Once again, a voice of reason. Appreciated.
I’m old enough to remember Olympic walk races (since discontinued when the would be first and second place finishers were disqualified for breaking into a run near the finish line) and yet young enough to have misunderstood the ‘72 massacre as gorillas attacking the athletes.
I remember remarking to my mother that they were real gorillas. I had a Planet of the Apes lunch box to prove it.
correction: I remember remarking to my mother that they were NOT real gorillas. I had the Planet of the Apes lunch box to prove it.
And, hey Jane, nice to spend time with you!
thanks demi, really tough subject.
don’t want to smack, that’s the problem.
rarely talk about it. this is the first i’ve watched any events in years. can’t enjoy it. too many people and too many stories ring around in my head.
there are times to just keep your mouth shut, cuz what good would it do anyway? just take the fun out of it for people who are watching for the right reasons. nope, i think that’s wrong.
kinda like when parents know something tragic is going on , but the kids need to be kids and have their innocent fun.
maybe before it’s over i’ll change my mind, but for now, enough said.
so, enjoy. i mean it.
GO USA!!
nite for real.
Haaretz news item on US/Israel and threats to attack Iran.
-G
Not only that, but Newton’s got a nice head of hair.
Age notwithstanding.
((Newtonusr))
Evening all. Just got back from seeing the BoDeans in a club date.. Totally fucking awesome.
Cool I wonder if the GOP will exploit or ignore this race?
Someone truly awesome in both athleticism and character that I’m getting to see right now is Cat Osterman – pitcher on the women’s softball team and student at my alma mater in Austin. 0-0 in th 4th vs. the Aussies
Hook’em and Go Cat !
Watertiger has him nailed.
age notwithstanding – how did you know i’m 57?
Lezak about to swim again……he was A-Mazing in that final heat in the previous relay…..clawing himself to the win. A marvel.
As an OU grad, I can only say, “Tuck Fexas!”
Astounding swim.
You, Loo Hoo and I are all the same age.
I think we are the “mean” age of Fdlers.
Yeah, go ahead with that one. :)
come on upstairs, the waters perfect!
Suzanne is here!

Ain’t but two things that come out of Texas and none of ‘em are good.
I do appreciate the northerly breeze in Texas on account of Oklahoma sucking so hard ;)
We always maintained that it was so windy in Oklahoma because Texas blows and Kansas sucks.
My comeback is not appropriate for this forum. My better half looked over to see what I was laughing about and plain vetoed it.

I.m with Hack here, it’s the cool side that fascism presents. WAY too commercial.
