Ben Smith watched the Judy Bob Woodruff interview of John Edwards, and noticed this:
He also, in explaining his view that his dalliance could remain private, cited Republican John McCain’s reported affair at the end of his first marriage almost three decades ago.
"What I was thinking was this was something that was personal to my own family," Edwards said, citing other public figures having survived extramarital affairs. He recalled, he said, having heard "John McCain talk about the mistakes that he’s made in his past with respect to his first marriage."
"I’m not the first person to do this," he said.
Funny how ABC chose not to transcribe that part of the interview. (The partial transcript is here.)
Of course, it’s also funny how the same news media that is now gleefully eviscerating a former presidential candidate over an affair that ended years ago is oh-so-squeamish about talking about current presidential candidate John McCain’s many affairs, or his relationship with Vicki Iseman.
It’s even funnier how they have such utter contempt for Edwards, yet they worship fellow adulterer, liar and former pol Newt Gingrich’s every utterance.
Could it be that Edwards’ real crime was being a self-made rich guy who wanted to do right by the not-so-rich and dared to tweak the consciences of the rich guys who are the opinion tastemakers in our media?
I’d love to see Edwards invoke McCain’s name — and the fact that he, unlike Edwards, is still very much an active politician — every time he’s asked about this from now on, if for no other reason than to see what sort of censorship gymnastics are executed by the press in order to keep such ignominy from their blessed and saintly John Sidney McCain III.

I used to be an Edwards supporter…
ES!
I Dugg your Digg…
…and I told them downstairs
Welcome home, PW.
If Edwards invokes McCains name, they will cut it out or stop bugging him! But I agree, he should do it at every opportunity.
Slipped in ahead of you, neuro…)
yes, I was posting a Digg and it blew up on me
Okay, my 2 cents, shoot me now…..the “mistress”…and I believe still currently the “mistress” has come out and said that eventually the “truth” about Elizabeth Edwards will come out.
This biatch only met Elizabeth one time….and made a huge judgment about her…
So……….who told her bad things about Elizabeth????
Takers????
Been there.
Fork Edwards! Oh yeah, Rielle already did….
Pissed off woman here.
Watch how ugly this is gonna get.
Who is the common denominator?
Is everyone off somewhere watching the olympics?
Just because you’re name is “John Sydney McCain III” doesn’t mean you were born with a silver ladle in your mouth nor does it mean you will cheat on your hideous looking wife for a much nicer younger, tight woman with blond hair. I mean it! His name we should never focus on. John Sydney McCain III is a good man and is more deserving of better attention than we give him. See?
Okay, I’m going to go gag myself with my plastic spatula with my dog’s teeth marks on the handle and then go to bed.
Nite nite everyone! ;-)
Seeing as Edwards is no longer a candidate for office, nor an office holder, I fervently pray that this sordid affair would end…!
Nite Kay. I’m off too.
Aloha, Kay!
John McCain
John McCain
John McCain
John McCain
John McCain…
Aloha, eCAHN!
CT, you mean you wish the media frenzy would end, not the, um, affair?
Actually, Edwards was interviewed by Bob Woodruff, not Judy.
Way too many politicians have such huge egos that they will exhibit hubris and think they can get away with things they know would not wash well with the public.
Yes, it’s hipocritical to hold pols to some higher standard than the rest of us, but it seems we have to play with charade and those who enter politics have to realize that they are living in a fish bowl and their enemies are looking for ways to take them down. And they will find them.
It amazes me that after dozens of examples, pols still try to do these things. It’s a drag that we demand that they be squesky clean to such an extent and then forgive liars who take us to war and trash our nation and our laws. This is terribly out of balance.
There are humiliation accountability moments for adulterers, but no legal ones for those who commit crimes. That’s just plain wrong.
Edwards is feared because he is calling BS on a lot of what this country exhaults. He’s made it at their game and he sees the injustices and they don’t like it when some one at the top calls BS and exposes their creepy exploitative approach to society. You don’t advocate FOR the people, you advocate to USE the people.
Edwards needs to be AG and rip the corporations a few new ones.
Both…! ;-)
Yes.
Who is/was John McCain’s mistress?
Double forking standard.
I’m so sick of this crap. I don’t care about their mistresses.
I care about their lying.
Liars!!!
Fork McCain.
Fork Edwards.
Hello, everyone!
Oh, now the fucking media want to cover Edwards. Bastards.
Hi, PW!
Yup.
Mark Halperin said that he trained a whole generation of ABCNews political reporters. As a result, it is the shilliest of the networks. Picking up the Edwards story, manipulating it, modifying it is absolutely typical of them.
but, but, they covered his haircuts…
Any of the networks would back-burner the Olympics and 2 or 3 wars for a story about illicit sex.
Correction, a story about DEMOCRATS having illicit sex.
Phoenix Woman, are suggestion that this “Edwards affair” is simply a distraction from Bush’s failed policies? Shocked! I say shocked!
mccain’s illicit sex with lobbyist – not so much.
Pretty much anything the media DO cover is a distraction from Bush’s failed policies. It’s no coincidence that it smells like fig leaves around here.
We need to keep asking the question: “Where is Ms Vicki? Why haven’t we heard from her?”
Strange how she dropped out of sight, isn’t it?
Indeed.
maybe she and bruce ivin’s theripist(sic) are relaxing together in the witness protection program.
PW, did Judy Woodruff also interview Edwards? Or do you mean the Bob Woodruff interview that ratfood mentioned?
Wonder if Bush’s handlers decided they’d better push him out front and center after McCain had his Alexander Haig channeling moment earlier today.
Serious times. We need serious heavy liftin’ to restore sanity to the WH.
Not to be a contrarian, but McCain’s messing around with Cindy while married was a pretty long time ago and he wasn’t running for President. If someone finds something on Vicky Whoever, then that should come out. It’s about more than just lying; it’s about character. John Edwards showed he didn’t have as much as he presented during his run for the nomination. And it was Bill Clinton’s lack of character that permitted the Repugs to derail his presidency. Imagine if Clinton had NOT dropped trou for the intern’s services? The Democratic Party might have remained stronger longer.
Ack! Thanks for spotting that. Fixed!
Sad news upstairs.
To be fair, I’ve never seen Bob and Judy in the same place at the same time.
Eggselent point, ratfood!
Ya, but…..
If it had been/really was Judy, Judy, Judy! it would have been sweet sickly irony indeed given what not-so-Jersey James Wolcott once had to say about her….
“…. whenever the wind musses her hair, she loses her train of thought.”
Not that that means she too is a Breck girl or anything.
OK?
.
Glen or Glenda?
Also, if you haven’t watched the Woodruff interview, I recommend it. It’s on YouTube in 3 parts. I think Edwards is lying through his teeth about the timing. He was all lawyerly and noncommittal about whether or not he hired her after launching his ‘blip’ with the burned out party girl. I think there is more sordidness that will probably ooze out over time. And Elizabeth apparently knew all about it while she shilled for him using their great family as a reason to elect the adulterer.
messing around with Cindy while married was a pretty long time ago and he wasn’t running for President.
====
he was in public office. met her at a fundraiser.
repeated behavior…
does that qualify?
and if it’s about character as you say-it shouldn’t matter if it was years ago or yesterday.
i think you meant it’s about misrepresentation, not character?
Great idea.
Too bad Crash McCain owns the MSM.
It’s up to us to spread the truth about this adulterer. He committed adultery with a lobbyist who lobbied his committee. He committed adultery with Cindy McCain on his first wife. Ross Perot still hates him for it. Some 527 needs to recruit Perot for a commercial.
McCain crashed 5 planes while in the navy. Do we really want a president who crashed 5 planes? If his dad and grandfather hadn’t been admirals he’d have been kicked out of the naval academy and the navy.
Another good way to connect McCain to Bush. Bush avoided AWOL and got into Harvard and Yale on daddy’s coattails. McCain graduated 5th from bottom of class at naval academy but still got coveted pilot job. Crashed 5 planes but no consequences.
Both Bush and McCain have short tempers and have no business being commander in chief.
It struck me that during the credible portions, his gaze was steady but whenever he appeared to be hedging, regarding the pics with the baby or whether payments had been made, he started blinking rapidly. Bad poker face for a trial lawyer.
I agree with you totally. What I mean is that while McCain certainly lacks character, I don’t think it benefits Edwards to whine, “Well, he did it too!” I.e., Edwards isn’t off the hook just because he also lacks character.
what you wrote was contradictory, but i thought that’s what you meant. that’s what i read anyway.
i don’t care who sleeps with whom, except for the price that’s attached. and who is really paying for it.
…and that’s hard work.
watertiger is upstairs!
The Ghost of Richard Nixon: “I Opened China for THIS?”
The thought occurred, yes. It fits in with the general pattern of the way they treated Edwards, which is like someone who was a traitor to them and all the other elitists in the Washington press corps.
I wrote this about Jane’s analysis the other day:
What else would we expect?
I like how Edwards worked McCain’s affairs into the conversation. I think the difference in how these turned out is an interesting contrast in character – Edwards came back to his wife and apologized; McCain never looked back.
