Ben Smith writes today about PowerPAC, a 501c4 that is launching African American voter registration in the South and a media campaign focused on Hispanics in the west, despite the Obama campaign’s "hostility to independent groups."
But according to a source close to the Obama campaign, they have changed their position on independent expenditures. Despite actively discouraging donors from giving to groups like Progressive Media at one point, they are now taking the position that it’s nothing they have any control over.
What does it all mean? Well, earlier in the year, a major donor was discouraged from writing a big check to America Votes for distribution to groups like PFAW and Planned Parenthood, who planned to use the money to help down ticket races. These groups have largely sat on the sidelines as a result — and as a consequence, candidates like Susan Collins haven’t been targeted for their Alito votes. If the money starts flowing again from big donors who didn’t want to piss off the Obama campaign, that could change.
It may be too late for Progressive Media, but Tom Matzzie’s new group which targets right wing billionaires and their Swift Boating activities seems to be setting Republican heads ablaze (they’re being compared to the Ku Klux Klan). It will be interesting to see how the newly-liberated money changes the dynamics of the race.

Gee, politics as usual; I’m shocked. Change I can believe in, and keep the change.
I do hope that Obama begins to recognize that it really isn’t all about him. He’s made the claim but his actions sometimes belie it (such as trying to stop donations to independent groups.
Touch of reality OT, if true, things are in the toilet. Cheney’s fingerprints all over.

Jane, I’m sorry, but I still don’t understand this. If I’m reading it right, it’s kinda like Obama wants all the money, from any source out there and he wants it all for Obama and the campaign. Is that right? I probably need to take a course on all of this or something.
Terminally blond here.
Kind of hard to play with the dolphins when the water is shark infested
This is very encouraging — it’s not yet the middle of August, and Team Obama has figured out that they are not the Little Red Hen, and they can’t do it all by themselves.
Encouraging, in that it’s a step in the right direction. Team Kerry never did figure out how to play this game, let alone play it effectively.
I think originally the motivation for the Obama campaign was to control the narrative and speak with one voice. The change might be due to a realization that they aren’t going to be attacked from a single direction AND hopefully they woke up to the fact that they were adversely impacting down-ticket races. There was a lot of down time, hope it’s not to late to catch up.
Anyway, the Supreme Court decided money = free speech. Why does Barack Obama hate the First Amendment?
When and/if shit hitteth the fan, don’t think for a moment the neocons will leave office.
Love of Bush is the root of all evil!
a) They can’t do it all
b) they need non-associated surrogates to attack McCain in ways they aren’t willing to.
I don’t think this is OT, is it?
What has been the response to the Strange Bedfellows money bomb?
Are people sitting up and taking notice?

Ditto!
I haven’t heard “boo” about that.
Thanks, Anyone? Buehler? Buehler? Buehler?????
Turns out Cheney built his faux Iranian swift-boats in his basement. After he realized they wouldn’t fit through the door, a no-bid contract was awarded to Halliburton to have them excavated. Needless to say, some damage to the residence ensued, so a second contract was awarded for reconstruction but unfortunately, a couple of Cheney’s servants, in addition to some detainees he had brought home for interrogation were accidently electrocuted as a result of faulty wiring, so the entire thing will have to be done over from scratch. Cost to the taxpayers to date, $40 billion.
OT again, looks like Russians are headed for Tiblisi

The southern border of Georgia is with Turkey whose southern border is with Iraq….whose eastern border is with Iran.
Lovely.
Once again I am shocked, shocked, I tell you to see that a successful politician from Chicago is capable of political posturing and manoeuvrings.
doG created War to teach Americans geography. Seems to be working ;-)
We need St. Jonathan to keep us safe.
LS and T-Bear, take a gander at this article and this one…! ;-)
No Blue Moon in that forecast
T-Bear and LS,
Pootie can run around in the Caucuses all he wants, because he knows we’re stretched paper-thin in Iraq and Afghanistan, with most of our warships on the wrong side of the Suez Canal.
For some reason, Gulliver’s Travels is coming to mind, especially the scene where the Lilliputians have tied our hero down by a hundred little strings, and he can’t get up.

Is Condi on the case yet or still in hiding?
Worst. Sec’y. Of. State. Ever.
Re Alito, reading The Nine by Jeffrey Toobin recently about the Supreme Court, I was struck by the fact that Alito’s hardcore ideological views on abortion, women rights, and a far right agenda dated back to and were known since the Reagan era yet Senate Democrats failed to do anything more to stop his nomination than to grouse a little about it.
Remember this judicial gem from Alito’s past:

It’s important to note as well that McCain voted for cloture too. Thus ensuring Alito’s confirmation. But it was the Democrats who in the face of the worst possible choice for the Court since Clarence Thomas who allowed Alito to happen.
All in the name of collegiality
Aha!!! Great links!
Just thought you should know…! ;-) I’m still leery about an extra carrier being in the region…!
Yeah and Bush can’t be bothered about it. He might miss an Olympic event. I think when he looked into Putin’s eyes and saw his soul so long ago he saw a kindred spirit, another thug and bully just like himself.
Perhaps the Obama campaign’s goal was simply to shut down the MoveOn.org PAC? Or are they now signaling that some special PACs are okay?
This is very frustrating and speaks to inexperience in national campaigning atop the ticket and the campaign. Are they listening to John Kerry? Do they remember that John Kerry lost? Because America remembers.
Not to worry, St. Jonathan is on the case, having his Alexander “I am in charge” Haig moments all over the media…along with local radio call-in like this morning in Fargo so he and the host can canoodle over his wonderful commander-in-chiefliness and how the Georgia situation is all very good for McCain.
Thanks CT, noted
Republicans love to use some senseless bloodshed to score cheap political points. When he heard the news, McCain exclaimed, “Huzzah-huzzah!” then threw his legs over his head and polluted his breeches with delight.
I’m still leery about an extra carrier being in the region…!
Hey, if this thing blows up, and bio-weapons are unleashed – I’m coming to live with you.
Just FYI.
LOL!

It’s not the carrier so much, it’s the strike forces that accompany it. I hope there are other reliable sources for this story that can be checked out. The propaganda and disinformation are rife.
Last I saw yesterday it was $140,000; it may be a lot more now. Not nearly enough, imho.
Can’t we do a class action?
Here’s a class act:
New Christy post
Of course, anything can happen but my read on this is that daylight hours do not begin to rapidly shorten until October so I thought in and around the 28th offered the best days for an attack with September being an outlier. August seems too early to me in terms of nights still being relatively short. But like I said with these clowns anything is possible.
Another source of Naval deployment is here
http://www.navy.mil/navydata/n…..asp?id=146
confirms much of which carriers are underway (and carrier groups inferred), and other groups as well.
I also use this one:

Ditto. And can we puhleaze knock Susan Collins from her stink-infested incumbency? It would make Lieberman mad, since they’re BFF. And Ted Stevens was all to generous to her.
So if the money doesn’t flow unless Obamessiah approves, should they really be referred to as independent expenditures?
