…as Washington embraced him, John McCain hugged right back.
The lobbyists – running his low road campaign.
The money – billions in tax breaks for oil and drug companies, but almost nothing for families like yours….
My favorite part? The visuals of McCain. Unlike McCain’s lackluster, juvenile ad attempts of late — wherein he tries to get in a cheap shot or two while using photos of Obama looking presidential, Team Obama appears to grasp a fundamental truth about the ad wars: people hate commercials, and often turn off the sound.
And the visuals of John McCain in this ad? We have several hugs with George Bush, a cadre of lobbyists following McCain at one point, and it’s smarm central with pix of his facial expressions. Watch and see what you think.
And how does this ad square with the reality of John McCain?
He just held a joint fundraiser with Ralph "praise the Lord and pass the collection plate" Reed. Apparently that religion gap McCain is feeling is starting to pinch enough that he’s now sucking up to Reed in religious desperation. Shouldn’t come as a shocker given that he’s already kissed and made nice with Grover Norquist and has Karl Rove advising him while doing media PR and running 527 interference for Freedom’s Watch at the same time.
It’s truly the craptastic trifecta with those three, isn’t it?
Those pesky campaign finance questions just got even murkier for the Maverick’s tainted money trail. McCain’s also flipflopped on tobacco policy (hi, Charlie Black!), on foreign policy, and any number of other issues this week, prompting The Long Goodbye to propose a "six degrees of separation" from a McCain flipflop and which lobbyist on his bloated campaign staff had a hand in the fetid pie. Ooooh, Grand Ole Party games!
Guess that explains why Joe Klein’s gone so sour on McCain of late:
"…he is running a campaign filled with lies about his opponent’s positions, a campaign that is conducted in a snarky, subversive tone that is entirely inappropriate to American politics….If tearing down Obama is the only way he can win–and this should be obvious, but apparently it isn’t–McCain doesn’t deserve to win."
Ouch.

So, What, nobody claims the “zed” anymore?
Morning Ann — how’s tricks? Just enjoying my coffee and chuckling about the absurdity of Ralph Reed…jeebus, why do these people never go away?!?
Great post, as usual, Christy! And I was half-way thru it when I posted the #1 comment. Where is everybody?
Does Joe Klein trump Cokie Roberts? Because Cokie was all horrified that Obama would vacation in as foreign and exotic a locale as….Hawaii.
Then I opened my Yahoo and saw this Politico story “7 worrisome signs for Obama.” One of the main sources for the story is Obama
backertroll Bob Kerrey – who expresses concerns about Obama’s race:and Obama’s unknownness:
and Americans’ desire to never have the President be of the same party that controls Congress –
Good GOD – with backers like that, who needs enemies???
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politi…..tico/12433
the ad is very effective
Good lord — that is bad!
Because they are never forced to pay for their crimes. We will see them return again and again until they are sent to prison. Just like the Watergate and Iran Contra luminaries who are running our government now. In 10-20 years, people who made a name for themselves with politicization of the DOJ, torture, etc. will be back with a vengance.
I’ve watched it a few times now — with sound on and with it off — and I think it’s even more effective with the sound off. Which is kinda funny, actually…
It has been a horrific Return of the Zombie People b-movie roll of Iran-Contra luminaries the last few years, hasn’t it? Digby had a great post on that a while back that I should dig up and read again…because it was a classic what not to do that we are, in fact, doing. SIGH
I was wondering, do they not know about Ralph Reed’s corruption? Do they still consider him a spokesperson for religious interests? What do they think Jesus would say about his taking money for cheating Indians while lying and stealing and then trying to cover it up by sending the money thru various hands before it came to him? He would be thrown out of the temple, so to speak, by real religious people. He’s no better than the money changers spoken of in the Bible; probably he’s worse.
yeah, they should be in Leavenworth by now
Speaking of a ”democratic agenda,” what’s the word on a democratic platform? Has anything been set yet? Truly, I’m not sure what Democrats stand for anymore, certainly not for the rule of law; then again, I’m not sure what Rethugs stand for anymore either. That’s the problem: both brands are in flux.
I wonder that every time his name comes up in a religious context — but I think it’s as much an acknowledgement of his manipulation skills and his built-in mailing list and phone tree power as anything. McCain is clearly willing to do anything to win, including sidling up to a disgraced smarm merchant if it will buy him votes somehow, no matter how disgraced, slimy and low Ralph Reed may be.
In other words: It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with taking the low road.
Listening to America: The Democratic Platform For Change
Krugman has something on that pertaining to health care policy this morning…
Thanks, Christy, great ad. The country needs to go back to lessons in parenting. Our political class has turned into a bunch of out of control teenagers. Only when they begin to encounter true consequences will their behavior change. As long as they can keep pushing the limits and getting away with it, they will continue. Now that widespread felonious actions are merely political policy that shouldn’t be criminalized, we are in deep doo doo.
Thank you Karl Rove. /snark

I don’t understand how Ralph Reed is still walking around a free man. Didn’t he do illegal stuff? At the very least, wasn’t he revealed to be the most disgusting slime that no self respecting person or entity would ever want to be associated with him again? I guess the question answers itself….
I’m sure David Gregory will characterize the Reed move as “saavy”
and jeebus, what kind of week is it when we agree with Joe Klein and Paris Hilton ?!?!?
Obama can use his new BFF Talibangelicals on Reed – and somebody, somewhere, better be asking why McScum wont release the 60,000 Abramoff/Norquist/Reed related emails
An ancient flip flopping warmongering idiot kind of known quantity.
Sparkles and others,
in case you missed it two fridays back, Moyers revisited Abramoff

yet democrats praise him.
and i wish people would pay more attention to randy scheunemann

if anyone gave the nod to georgia, it was scheunemann, last year at the riga conference.
=========
martinez talking about his visit to georgia two years ago with mccain on the diane rehm show right now.
he just said mccain knows more about georgia than about anyone, that should have been scheunemann, baltic expert/operative/enforcer.
Why isn’t McCain just pretending to be religious? That’s worked for Bush for many years.
The new Obama ad is maybe the best to date. There is a strategic reason not to throw your hardest punches at the start of a match. If you do that, everything that comes after looks puny by comparison. Have to leave room to ratchet up the intensity as the campaign progresses.
Anybody seen the pic of Putin on HuffPo’s front page this morning? It’s easy to see how Bush could fall in love with those eyes…
i wrote this a few weeks ago-ralph reed.he was on diane rehm and charlie rose, smooth as custard pie.
Subject: questionable guest with questionable credentials for being there
Dear Diane and Charlie;
Why is Ralph Reed on my radio? (and my tv)
Because he wrote a novel? Millions of novels written every day. Thousands published.
So, he’s a famous novelist? ummm, no. Award-winning novelist? ummmm, no. Widely read novelist? um, no. Is a writer in other forums and crossed-over into writing novels? ummm, no.
He’s ‘known’ for other reasons, none of which are being mentioned. hmmmmmm. nefarious conduct, most of which we don’t even know about.
If he had written about that, then I can understand why he would be a guest on national radio and tv. But he didn’t.
So, Why is Ralph Reed on my radio?(and tv)
Might as well have Paris Hilton as a guest or better yet, Charles Manson, they have name recognition too. If they write a novel will they be on, too?
Seriously, why is Ralph Reed on my radio and tv for writing a novel?

McCain and the Bushies are actually very devout. They worship Money and Power.
even Abramaoff thought he was a cheat.
This is very frustrating and is another example of how far Democrats have internalized the Beltway Conventional Wisdom which itself is made up mostly of White House and Republican talking points.
Corsi’s tome is #10 at amazon
Freddoso’s is #15
corsi is #1 NYT non fiction, fredosso has yet to crack their top 35
No honor among thieves
But why is it called non fiction
did you notice how old most of that footage is?
geez
makes me want to rub his belly . /s
I think it goes well beyond talking points into believing and supporting the policy.
and without context.
lol
yep–they’re rulers of the ‘literal phrase’…..context? we don’t need no stinking context!!
Man, I may have to make another pot of coffee here. Was up late last night watching Olympics…I’m getting too old to be this behind on sleep. *g*
Thanks for asking….Im home sick. What a drag.
Aw — bummer. Hope you feel better soon!
phewwwwww-that one went right over my head!!!

maybe the Ohio firedogs can help me out -
a highly influential Dem County Official in Cleveland is being investigated, he is the de facto head of the Cuyahoga Machine – a place that will matter on Election Night
all the field marks for corruption are there but the hairs on the back of my neck go up whenever a major Dem is investigated going in to an election
the acting USAA has been with DOJ since 73. the USA Lead on the case is his assistant; Robert Kern, and I can’t find much on either of them
pls recall the circumstances are eerily similar to those David Iglesias was fired for failing to prosecute in timely manner
NYT
ah but all that
pulchritudeathleticism is well worth it*g*I think it’s a pretty effective ad…hits hard at McCain being a “Maverick”. I think that they need to be prepared to begin questioning whether Cindy Helmsley McCain’s business interests are compatible with the wife of a Chief Executive. McCain pushed through the Indian Gaming Act back in 1988…and Cindy benefitted from that in millions from the deals she made distributing alcohol into the reservation casinos.

BTW Looks like they may ask attendees to bring their own bottle (and sandwiches) to the GOP Convention. The GOP Convention was over $10 million in debt, a fact that they only recently discovered. Apparently they have raised some additional money to cover it partially…but they are scaling back on the usual extravagances as well.
