It looks pretty clear that having so many neocons on their lobbyist payroll is at least going to pay off for the Georgians in the one thing they have going for them -- the well-compensated punditry that never pays for pushing the United States into one disaster after another.
The Georgian overreach, offset by the Russian over-reaction, has few heroes, just victims
Russia illegally attacked Georgia and imperiled a small and feeble neighbor. But by dispatching his own ill-prepared military to resolve a secessionist dispute by force, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has managed to lead his country down the path of a disastrous and ultimately self-defeating war.
And what's the BIG reason to beat the war drum in order to side with Georgia? As ever, Bill Kristol is doing the spade work in turning a disaster people like he and Randy Scheuenemann encouraged, into a chance for some more of the lovely exploitation. You know this was coming from Bill Kristol:
But Georgia, a nation of about 4.6 million, has had the third-largest military presence — about 2,000 troops — fighting along with U.S. soldiers and marines in Iraq. For this reason alone, we owe Georgia a serious effort to defend its sovereignty. Surely we cannot simply stand by as an autocratic aggressor gobbles up part of — and perhaps destabilizes all of — a friendly democratic nation that we were sponsoring for NATO membership a few months ago.
Try and assert and protect (diplomatically) Georgia's sovereignty, but let's not pretend the question of South Ossetia is so clear-cut. But to neocon and original Kagan family member, Robert, nobody needs to even THINK about how all this got started. Nevertheless, this was a preventable disaster, what needs to be done is to keep it from getting out of control. To do otherwise is what bellicose simpletons -- or those who exploit them would do -- cue Bill Kristol.
UPDATE: One more thing, if what is going on seems familiar to those of you with a sense of American history that is greater than Lou Dobbs or any FoxNews talking head there are some historical parallels:
1836 to 1848
Georgia = Mexico
Russia = The United States
South Ossetia = Texas
It's a rough parallel, but not inappropriate.

So, exactly what would sweet William have us do, as opposed to “simply stand by as an autocratic aggressor gobbles up part of — and perhaps destabilizes all of — a friendly democratic nation that we were sponsoring for NATO membership a few months ago” ? Massive first-strike nuclear force?
Russia illegally attacked Georgia and imperiled a small and feeble neighbor. But by dispatching his own ill-prepared military to resolve a secessionist dispute by force, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has managed to lead his country down the path of a disastrous and ultimately self-defeating war.
Russia is claiming to be defending a minority group that does not want to be part of Georgia. Just how would the Neocons react if the Rev Al Sharton seized control of New York and tried to secede with Canadian support?
Isn’t protecting an oppressed people the only reason that we are in Iraq that has not been discredited as a lie?
Oh wait we are oppressing the Iraqis now!
Massive first strike with nukes is the only way we can win we can’t fight 2 wars in different parts of the world no matter what the Pentagon says.
We don’t have the troops unless we draft. How many riots would there be if the Bush twins and all the neocon avoid the war along with the MSM kids but poor kids have to go? How many riots when the middle class kids are taken out of college to fight?
We don’t have the money unless China decides to keep buying our t-bills, which they might after all with Russia and America gone China would be the sole remaining Hyperpower.
Russia could shut off oil and natural gas to all of Europe unless we back off can you say stockmarket collapse? Ford and GM would be bankrupt the Dollar would collapse Gold would skyrocket.
Russia wants a deal on Iran will Bush deal? What will the market do Monday? If the market thinks that Bush will do nothing then oil prices will just go up, but if the market thinks that William the Bloody (anybody’s blood BUT his own) is going to get his way then the market will drop.
If it really looks like war then DOW at 7,000 or less?
The details of who did what to precipitate Russia’s war against Georgia are not very important. http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....inionsbox1
Of course not because Georgia attacked a minority group that had broken away for a few YEARS and Russia intervened to protect them
kind of likeexactly like what we did in Iraq. But of course that point would interfere with a Kagan’s weak narrative for war.
I see no reason to sacrifice our troops for another war. Especially if Bush and the Neocons think that it is a good idea.
Why does any Kagan have a job writing about war or anything just how often do you have to be wrong to be fired if your a loyal Bushie?
Teamsters don’t have this kind of job protection. Yet the Neocons hate Unions are the Neocons jealous of Their privileges ?
BK (Home of the Whopper) demands we immediately deploy Army Detachment Steiner to solve this problem and save the day.
Good morning, pups. Kristol and Krugman have questions this morning. Wrong Way Billy Kristol asks “Will Russia Get Away With It?” and says we owe Georgia, which has stood with U.S. soldiers in Iraq, a serious effort to defend its sovereignty. I expect to see him on the front lines. Mr. Krugman asks “Can It Happen Here?” and says the history of the pursuit of universal health care in America is one of missed chances.

Georgia burns down church full of civilians
Georgia Commits Genocide in S. Osettia – directed by US and Israeli advisors and aided by Blackwater Mercenaries:
Supervovatube – REAL “NEWS” – Not the disinformation provided by the US Propagandist Media:
http://www.supernovatube.com/v.....3914f4f1f8
Fighters in black uniforms with American Flags on their arms were spotted in S. Osettia attacking civilians along side the Georgian forces. Two bodies discovered at the scene were of black soldiers, assumed to be American.
Russia is kicking Georgia’s ass in response to this unprovoked attack. This Georgia fiasco is reminiscent of the Lebanon fiasco that Israel blundered into.
This was all staged and planned by the USA and their Israeli partners in crime, timed precisely to coincide with the opening of the Olympic Games. This may have been an attempt to test the will of Russia to respond to another planned US/Israeli aggression, that of the pending attack against Iran.
Putin said in Tehran months ago:
“Any attack on Iran will be considered by Russia to be an attack on the national interests of Russia.”
NOW YOU KNOW WHY THIS OCCURRED:
Media ownership study ordered destroyed

‘Every last piece’ destroyed
Adam Candeub, now a law professor at Michigan State University, said senior managers at the agency ordered that “every last piece” of the report be destroyed. “The whole project was just stopped - end of discussion,” he said. Candeub was a lawyer in the FCC’s Media Bureau at the time the report was written and communicated frequently with its authors, he said.

Could this latest “crisis” simply be another move in the “perpetual war means perpetual profits” game? “Germany’s President Putin” (as McSame called him) and Shrub spent a lovely weekend at the Boosh lair in Maine last year. Always wondered what they were cooking up then.
As Maj. Gen Butler warned in the 1930s, the BigMoney rulers of various countries know that chaos works in their favor in terms of staying in power and profiting from the unrest. Gen. Butler was noticing that BigMoney in America was propping up Hitler, including Shrub’s grandpappy Prescott, and suspected something was afoot, which of course ended up as WWII.

I’m always suspicious when the Neocon punditry (about 95% of all punditry in America) responds to issues with amazingly consistent storylines and so rapidly. It’s all carefully coordinated.
Name the country that intentionally targets civilian populations AND UN peace keepers as an integral hallmark of its war planning strategy. THESE ARE WAR CRIMES.
Who wrote Georgia’s plan for aggression? Who advised? Who sold them their weapons systems?
DEBKAfile discloses Israel’s interest in the conflict from its exclusive military sources:
Jerusalem owns a strong interest in Caspian oil and gas pipelines reach the Turkish terminal port of Ceyhan, rather than the Russian network. Intense negotiations are afoot between Israel Turkey, Georgia, Turkmenistan and Azarbaijan for pipelines to reach Turkey and thence to Israel’s oil terminal at Ashkelon and on to its Red Sea port of Eilat. From there, supertankers can carry the gas and oil to the Far East through the Indian Ocean.
Aware of Moscow’s sensitivity on the oil question, Israel offered Russia a stake in the project but was rejected.
Last year, the Georgian president commissioned from private Israeli security firms several hundred military advisers, estimated at up to 1,000, to train the Georgian armed forces in commando, air, sea, armored and artillery combat tactics. They also offer instruction on military intelligence and security for the central regime. Tbilisi also purchased weapons, intelligence and electronic warfare systems from Israel.
These advisers were undoubtedly deeply involved in the Georgian army’s preparations to conquer the South Ossetian capital Friday.
In recent weeks, Moscow has repeatedly demanded that Jerusalem halt its military assistance to Georgia, finally threatening a crisis in bilateral relations. Israel responded by saying that the only assistance rendered Tbilisi was “defensive.”
This has not gone down well in the Kremlin. Therefore, as the military crisis intensifies in South Ossetia, Moscow may be expected to punish Israel for its intervention.

Fresh Prairie: Long Suffering Wives Club
This reminds me of all the solar car stories from the 70’s GM and Ford put out to make people feel like the Corporations were on top of things.
Feel Good Propaganda about science as savior, funny they don’t try religion as Savior to a main stream audience I wonder how the bible belt people feel about that?
When times are tough the Government and Corporations lie about things getting better but the nature of their lies, what they lie about suggests that Government and the Corporations don’t think the main stream will buy the same cool aid the 30%ers do.
It almost makes you think that the Government and the Corporations were using the religious beliefs of the 30%ers but that deep down they themselves think that they and us 70%ers are to smart for that.
Nope the New God science has to lie to us.
Don’t forget getting the majority of Bush’s tax cut.
When the rich pay for the war, when they sacrifice their own then maybe we will talk.
Nice parallel, Attaturk!!
I hope you don’t mind that I’m going to blatantly steal it. :)
Are all the airports in the country now broadcasting “orange alerts” over their p.a. systems as a friend encountered on her travels recently? Is Big Brother Broadcasting ratcheting up the fearmongering for the election?

Mornin’, Attaturk
All the ruminations about policy and politics aside the Russians are killing civilians by the hundreds. Who gives a rat’s ass what Bill Kristol, Robert Kagan or any other neocon fool thinks? Our voices ought to be raised in chorus against the killing of innocents. Those old enough to remember the Cold War in the 50’s and 60’s should know what’s going on here.
Fuck the pundits. I want to know where the outrage over civilian deaths is? One place it should be is here.
It’s been “orange” every time I’ve flown for at least two years now. I remember it being bumped up just before the ‘06 elections, and it doesn’t seem like it’s ever gone back down.
Fear is the great controller.
Glad to hear that Kristol & Kagan have all the answers to our foreign policy.
I think we should stop telling other countries what to do. At least until (if it ever happens) we get our own problems sorted out. Our foreign policy towards Russia is idiotic. Trying to get the countries bordering Russia to be our allies is just sticking sharp sticks in the bear’s eyes. Remember our reaction when the USSR moved missiles into Cuba? How do you think the Russians feel when we are arming countries on their borders?
It is very foolish to try and impose our will around the world by strong arm tactics.
Agreed.
The Russian response was grossly disproportionate and killed a LOT of civilians.
But it should be noted this is after Georgia killed more than a few innocents themselves in South Ossetia.
Russia is a MUCH MUCH more powerful nation than Georgia — when a smaller state foolishly tries to assert territorial rights over a disputed region, Russia is hardly the first major power to slap that challenging power back disproportionately.
It’s tragic, but since we’ve done exactly the same thing as has about every major power it is hardly surprising.
Still doesn’t take away the tragedy, but considering the ease in which they drop bombs on nations half-a-world away from the United States let’s us just say the statements of Bush, Cheney, Kristol et al ring more than a bit hollow.
Sums up the whole sorry mess that has been the years of BushCo. Tho’ I’d edit slightly:
the ease in which they drop bombs on

This story completely contradicts the claim that Israel stopped selling arms to Georgia months ago. The J-Post story is false:
Foreign Ministry seeks lower profile for Israel in Georgia-Russia conflict
By Barak Ravid and Amos Harel
Israel is hoping to maintain a low profile with regard to the war in Georgia, government officials told Haaretz. One source noted that currently, neither side of the conflict is pleased with Israel’s position, since Russia has been irked by Israeli-Georgian weapons deals for some time, and Tbilisi is now frustrated by Israel’s decision to halt arms exports.
In a move which drew heavy criticism from defense officials, Israel’s Foreign Ministry over the weekend recommended complete cessation of the sale of weapons and security-related equipment to Georgia in light of the fighting between its troops and the Russian Army.
“The Foreign Ministry’s approach demonstrates a naively simplistic view and a lack of understanding of the complex world of the security deals which Israel is conducting with foreign partners,” a defense official told Haaretz on condition of anonymity.

Thanks for identifying yourself.
My point was to show complicity in selling arms to Georgia. I doubt either story is entirely true, just forwarding an agenda.

Google: Hasbara and note the Megaphone program.
I’ve seen Megaphone, been around for a few years now.
A side-effect of the conflict for Israel, said Solodkin, who is frequently asked to represent Israel on Russian-language BBC news programs, is that the Russian public can now better understand Israel’s complaints regarding media bias. Russians, she explained, have complained in recent days that the western media outlets are painting an overly-sympathetic picture of the Georgian side of the struggle.
“I am very happy that Russians now understand what it is like to be Israeli from the perspective of the international press,” said Solodkin. “You hear them complaining that ‘even the BBC doesn’t understand what is happening in the field.’”
She added that her own attempts at hasbara would be improved by the fact that Russia had now adopted a phrase, “determining peace,” that would be useful to explain Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Itsik Moshe, chairman of the Israel-Georgia Chamber of Business, said however that Israeli politicians should be identifying with the Georgian and not the Russian side of the conflict. “Just as Israel is on the front line of the conflict with fundamentalist Islam, one of the great threats to world stability, Georgia is on the front line of the second threat - Russian assertion of control over the small countries on her borders,” said Moshe from his Tbilisi office.
“Israeli leaders need to show solidarity with Georgia just as the presidents of France and the United States expressed their solidarity with Israel. I don’t know if Israel has a better friend in the world than Georgia,” he continued.

Lieberman ‘on McCain short-list’
By Stephanie Kirchgaessner in Washington
Published: August 9 2008 00:35 | Last updated: August 9 2008 00:35
Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice-presidential nominee who has endorsed John McCain, is being vetted as a potential running mate for the Republican presidential hopeful, according to an adviser to Mr McCain’s campaign.
Mr Lieberman, who has campaigned for the Arizona senator, has long been considered an unconventional but plausible choice for Mr McCain.
This is yet another example of the use of Karl Rove’s theory of political campaigns. Read more. http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008.....tical.html
