WASHINGTON — The United States this year will have spent $100 billion on contractors in Iraq since the invasion in 2003, a milestone that reflects the Bush administration’s unprecedented level of dependence on private firms for help in the war, according to a government report to be released Tuesday.

The report, by the Congressional Budget Office, according to people with knowledge of its contents, will say that one out of every five dollars spent on the war in Iraq has gone to contractors for the United States military and other government agencies, in a war zone where employees of private contractors now outnumber American troops.

Last night in Hong Kong, the police received a disturbing call from a man in trouble.

Xing, a 41 year-old man, was calling from LanTian park in the middle of the night. The lonely and disturbed man had apparently thought it would be fun to have sex with one of the steel sit-up benches around the park.

The bench has numerous small holes in it, which Xing used to attempt to satisfy himself. However, once he became aroused he found that he was stuck and could not get his penis out of the small hole.

He panicked and called the police to help him.

Many Alaska Republican contributors are keeping their checkbooks closed until after the primary, said Marc Hellenthal, a pollster and consultant who’s worked for Young in the past. He’s not working for anyone in the race now.

“When you’ve got people that are 30-year-plus (incumbents) it’s smarter to sit on the fence than pick a horse that doesn’t win,” Hellenthal said. “The big problem with Don is that he used the money he was given for legal fees. That’s not why people contributed to him. So that created incredible uproar amongst the money group.”

Vairengte (Mizoram) • Last week when Captain Greg Adams and Staff Sergeant Cote along with 28 US Special Forces commandos arrived at this hilltop village in India’s northeastern state of Mizoram, they were far from thrilled.

But after a week at the Counter Insurgency Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) here, the 30 US soldiers of the Special Forces or Green Berets were simply stunned.

Upon their arrival at Vairengte, a small tribal hamlet wedged on the border between Mizoram and Assam, they were not amused. “Where on earth have we landed?” they seemed to ask each other.

Yesterday, Captain Adams told said: “This is the most amazing military education facility anywhere.”

Adams made the remarks as he led his troops to a dangerous slithering operation — coming down an MI-17 helicopter by clinging on to a rope and landing safely.

The school at Vairengte is today considered one of the world’s most prestigious anti-terrorist institutions with troops from several countries getting training there.

But both candidates and the public are evidently unaware of a basic fact: Gasoline is more affordable for American families now than it was in the days of the gas-guzzling muscle cars of the early 1960s. Prices are beginning to come down somewhat, but this was true even when the national average was at its summer peak.

Two-thirds of American voters say they think that the price of gas is “an extremely important political issue,” and many believe that it will cause them “serious” financial hardship, according to a recent survey by the Associated Press and Yahoo.

But my friends from that part of the world have always known that. In fact, right after 9/11, they told me the ISI is run by Islamic fundamentalists and were the ones who established the Taliban.

Pakistan’s military, by contrast, are quite secular and are on very good terms with their U.S. counterparts. (So I’m told.)

OMG, I love it here, but can’t retire yet. I went to see the condo today, and the view is incredible. (I bought it three years ago, before it was built.) Great area –El Congrejo–restaurants, shopping, banks, etc. all within walking distance. Really cool.

I’m somewhat skeptical about Cato’s numbers. In the mid-60s, gas was 20-to-30 cents per gallon, and today it is fifteen to twenty times that. I don’t believe that the median salary has gone up by a factor of 15 to 20.

Perhaps they are looking at median “family income,” which is skewed by the fact that so many women have entered the job market. But the influx of women into the job market since say 1965, has been accompanied by an in increase in the number of multi-vehicle families and an increase in mile commuted, etc.

Blast hits Pakistan air force bus

At least 10 people have been killed after a bomb exploded near a bus carrying members of Pakistan’s air force in the northwestern city of Peshawar, police say.

The explosion happened as the bus crossed a bridge near Badaber, an air force base on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday.

“So far, according to my information, it was a security vehicle and an IED [improvised explosive device] was planted under the bridge,” Malik Naveed Khan, the police chief of North West Frontier Province, said.

From 1978-1993 Boykin was assigned in various capacities to Delta Force.

Most recruits come from the United States Army Special Forces (the Green Berets) and the 75th Ranger Regiment. Not just anyone can become a Delta operator; personnel must be male, in the rank of Sergeant (E-5) or above and attend a Delta briefing to even be considered for admission. Since the 1990s, the Army has posted recruitment notices for the 1st SFOD-D [5], which many believe refers to Delta Force. The Army, however, has never released an official fact sheet for the force. The recruitment notices placed in Fort Bragg’s newspaper, Paraglide, refer to Delta Force by name, and label it “…the Department of Defense’s highest priority unit…” [6]. The notice states that all applicants must be males, 22 years or older, have a general technical score of 110 or higher, and be in the ranks of E-5 through E-8, with at least four and a half years in service.

Such recruits are men with skills such as proficiency in a foreign language or other desirable traits. The selection process is based on the UK SAS model [7][8]. The selection course begins with standard tests including: push-ups, sit-ups, and a three mile run. The recruits are then put through a series of land navigation courses to include an eighteen-mile, all-night land navigation course while carrying a thirty-five pound rucksack. The rucksack’s weight and the distance of the courses are increased and the time standards to complete the task are shortened with every march. The physical testing ends with a forty-mile march with a forty-five pound rucksack over very rough terrain which must be completed in an unknown amount of time. It is said that only the highest-ranking members of the Pentagon are allowed to see the set time limits, but all assessment and selection tasks and conditions are set by Delta training cadre.[8][2] The mental portion of the testing begins with numerous psychological exams. The men then speak to the commander of Delta and others within the unit. If an individual is selected for Delta, then a 6 month training cycle/probation begins, starting with firearms accuracy and training with other types of munitions.[2]

Good point we need options like husbands or wives getting paid more I don’t care who that and alimony and child support needs to be enforced better.

What I do know is that my grandfather made enough to keep him and his 3 kids fed despite coming from Mexico, learning English and working manual labor construction jobs.
Today a lot of Citizens can’t make enough to so both parents have to work.

IMHO, as the denominator in their affordability index, they should use per-worker discretionary income rather than per-family raw income.

What really got me about that article, aside from the appalling ignorance of basic facts that have been known by the most casually interested for about 60 years, was the presentation of reasons why Pakistan might rationally choose to hedge against our acting against their interests, e.g. the recent general tilt toward India, the nuclear co-operation compact with them, India’s development of strategic trade assets in US-supported Afghanistan that wuold cut Pakistan out, and potentially provide an incentive or opportunity for India to try to control Pakistan, combined with that same obliviousness of officials in the USG to their role in creating these conditions.

Add to that what they might see as our importuning about things that matter more to us than to them, or that have a much higher cost in stability to them than they do in immediate threat to us (the cavalier way in which US appear to have broken up some ongoing intel operations, a matter on which the ISI is better-informed than we are, has got to play a role in their perceptions here), whether they’re justified about feeling this way or not, and it’s possible to see how they could feel more that they’re being expected to capitulate than that they’re either being bargained with or confronted with a transparently legitimate request.

I wonder whether the Pakistanis might have been more willing to risk a nuanced view of even the exact same set of facts if we had not gone clodhopping into Iraq.
