Russia feels surrounded, ill used and disrespected by the West and by the US in particular

Russia sounds a lot like China in this respect. Only China has often been disrespected by Russia as well. As one Chinese friend put it: Russia makes friendly overtures toward China, then kisses Western ass and kicks China in the ass.
But the world alignment is changing, thanx in part to the preznit.

Having said that clinton would not have been as extreme as the second bush. The problem fundamentally is thinking that there is a West that needs to be defended against what’s not west. Russians have something the US doesn’t have, a fundamental tenacity and a much greater willingness to just do it for as long as it takes. The economic numbers on Imperial Russia were abysmal much of the time, but it didn’t matter much except at key points. Georgia’s much too small to be one of those key points.
