I'm going to file this one under "shit about the Bush administration you couldn't possibly make up."
Is it possible to build a border wall without the help of the very people it is intended to keep out?
That's an open question all along the border, and especially in the Rio Grande Valley, where the wall is widely unpopular but is now becoming a reality...Valley longtimers have cracked wise about the barriers, saying they not only won't thwart illegal immigrants intent on entering the country but that illegal labor will probably help build them.
People in South Texas know what the deal is. It's happened before, after all.
In 2006, a fence-building company in Southern California agreed to pay nearly $5 million in fines for hiring illegal immigrants to build millions of dollars' worth of fencing, work that included some of the border fence between San Diego and Mexico.
That's embarrassing. But surely they've fixed the problem, right?
Asked whether a border wall could be built on deadline without illegal workers, Vaughan, with the general contractors group, told the Brownsville Herald in June: "It's probably borderline impossible to be honest with you."
Oh well. Naturally, the wingnuts DO NOT THINK THIS IS FUNNY AT ALL.
"I just want the damn fence built. ... I'll let the Libs and the Intellectuals sit around and worry about irony," one poster wrote on a conservative Web site.
Classic.

Why am I not surprised?
you’re right, you couldn’t possibly make this up
Once again, reality (and conservative hypocrisy) outstrips The Onion.
Because it’s exactly what we all knew would happen.
OMG, BT, day before yesterday I was taking a shuttle from Otay to Tijuana airport. I saw huge new buildings on our side of the border, and asked the shuttle driver what was going on. He said, “Mercenarios.”
Blackwater. It was so creepy.
When asked to define the term, “irony,” the poster replied, “It’s what takes the wrinkles out of shirts.”
No one could have forseen such a thing.
Well on the topic of reality outstripping The Onion
TPM continues on the Ivins case noting that at least 100 people had access to the flask of anthrax over which Ivins was described as the “sole custodian”. And his was not the only flask of RMR 1029. There were 15 others. As they rather snarkily conclude, “At this rate, by the end of next week, we’ll find out that this strain of anthrax is typically found in most 10th-grade science labs.” Ouch.

nonsense, who could have anticipated …
and when that last section of fence is in place, on which side of that fence do ya suppose that the “illegals” will be standing? heh.
Anything to see lou dobbs lose it is fun.
And again, somehow that doesn’t surprise me, either.
He’ll try to ignore it. Which is of course why people should call up his show (his radio show if nothing else) and ask him about it on the air.
Ironypocrisy
While us leftist intellectuals are worrying about it, let’s add to the lexicon of our “national language”, shall we? We have to be able to define orgiastic stupidity like this much more concisely.
Or maybe that should be “ironipocresía”…
Doesn’t matter, they’ve thoughtfully installed a door every hundred feet or so. Anyway, the real goal of the fence isn’t to keep people out, it’s all about keeping up appearances to placate the base.
The Onion cannot be outstripped

Better than a Ouiji Board
With our tax dollars. Stupid and useless.
I’m just surprised I haven’t heard the Self-Righteous Ones saying, “Well, even Jesus was made to carry his own cross.”
That’s wonderful. LOL
These doors will probably have locks on them so they can only be opened from the south
Kind of like asking the burglar you caught in your house to install a security system.
I fucking hate Blackwater.
Have you ever read Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” The border fence is of George Bush’s many windmills.
Two feet bad!
I intended to say, ONE of George Bush’s many windmills.
One of the funnier things I’ve read today. It would be even funnier if it weren’t so true.
Maybe OT but appropriate

Indeed!
Especially when they are used to cross our borders and pick our produce. Better it should rot on the vine.
I’m sure some burgler wannabes try to get jobs working for security installers. It’s a great way to case the joint.
Hmm. I see what you’re saying, but I’m loathe to compare undocumented workers with burglars.
I used the term “illegals” for comedic purposes, BTW. Normally, it’s a word I avoid/object to.
(cbl2-left you a link about the dem party chief under indictment in cleveland that you asked about.in last thread.50 something.)
Speaking or irony… the fact that on one hand, conservatives get apoplectic about illegal aliens but on the other support the Bush junta’s abuses of power.
Or any lawbreaking by corporations, tax evasion, lying to Congress, etc., etc.
IOKIYAR.
should have been “OF irony”
I have trouble with “r”s and “f”s, intended my handle to be fatrood :-P
It wasn’t intended to be an exact comparison, more of a rebuttal to the guy who “just want(s) the damn fence built.”
I hear you.
The Great Wall…The Maginot Line…In the Republic version of history, i guess fences always work.
Took me a minute to crack the code. It’s okay if you are Republican.
Shouldn’t the ridges on that fence panel be vertical? Less easy to climb that way….
Or are the ridges only on US side?
Bingo.
Is the wall to keep the “illegals” out, or or to keep Americans in when things inevitibaly get worse?
Thanks for the great post, BT. Time for this rat to give Bob the conure his biweekly bath.
Little repair job, no charge ;-)
Hey, Pups
Anyone got the latest update on the moneybomb?
Thanks for the post, BT. Hadn’t thought about who was actually constructing the wall…now that I have, the use of undocumented workers really isn’t a surprise. Note that “not a surprise” does NOT equal “no big deal”. I’m not that far gone with hypocrisy-fatigue yet!
