Olympian Bobby Lea. You’ve read the story of the US Olympic team cyclers who stepped off the plane into the smog of Beijing wearing their USOC designed and distributed breathing mask, carbon filtered, to protect their high octane lungs? Oopsie. Didn’t mean to be making some kind of statement. [Am I the only one who thinks the IOC was pwnd by the Chinese Government?] For more information on the Olympic Bicycling Competition, here’s the rapidly updated wiki link. Good Morning Folks!
Getting tea for the read…
Morning, AT!
How are you doin’?
Good Morning, Nothing yet interesting on Chris Matthews. But at least didn’t talk about Edwards.
Morning all.
Juan Cole has the QOTD:
Great question.
Morning Revs
Oh that’s a good one from Juan Cole, Why do they get all the good impeachments?
Here’s Bobby Lea’s home track, The Valley Preferred Cycling Center aka the Lehigh Valley Velodrome, where the accompanying photo was taken. Southeastern Pennsylvania is getting a reputation as a top international cycling center, the Manayunk Wall is no cakewalk. [mMmm cake]
.
Interesting history of the Velodrome
Reminder to Eliot and all the crew who is within proximity to the Philly area—
BBQ chez Rev. Sat. Aug. 30. John McThuselah’s birthday a day late and a dollar short. Rain date Sun. 31st. For details and location e-mail me at my name at mac dot com.
Lehigh Valley is where Sam Bennett is running for congress. She’s one of our Better Dems. Pro Responsible Plan and anti FISA bill.
Great here, Elliot. Next Saturday Night I’ll be Howard Dean’s closing act at DemocracyFest. and I’ll also be showing off my Heart Tuner Gizmo Experiments while I’m there.
I’m at the point now where I’ve begun to learn how to manipulate my body’s electromagnetic field. Also I’ve realized to a greater extent that singing is a way of broadcasting heart waves, I’ve learned to focus those waves when I perform, and sometimes I can feel some of the moar receptive hearts tingling along with me.
My experiments now seem to indicate what is often called a “Religious Experience” or Ecstatic Event can now be objectively verified and taught. Well, not RIGHT NOW, because the machine overloads at 120 millivolts per second. However, I’m convinced at this point that sustained heart amplitudes of 150-160 millivolts per second would be sufficient for Recursion (Oneness, Grok) to begin.
Then it will be like popcorn. One soul will pop and start a chain reaction. I wouldn’t mind firsties on THAT thread…
First encountered with her while watching the PA Primary returns. Regional teeVee allowed for an interesting interview. I was duly impressed, really sharp. She has places to go imo.
She could probably use our support. Maybe she’s in a parade on Labor Day that we can go and boost her in.
Oh, and t-storms heading our way this afternoon it seems.
That’s a great gig, looking forward to hearing about it, wonder if any of it will be on CSPAN.
I’ll be telling folks there to live blog when possible…
Been getting enough rain at your place? Around here, the rainfall has varied wildly throughout the county. In July we got almost 9 inches of rain in my neighborhood; and across the county in Kutztown, they got half that.
some Sunday funnies
I have lost respect for these “athletes” and do hope they lose, badly
if their was smog then they had no business opologizing, in fact, they should have went home immediately if they were asked to remove those masks
I understand they’ve been training all their lives for this event and that might affect their judgement so I forgive them for remaining to compete but there is no justification for the opology and they are failures already
if on the other hand the air quality was fine, then they were idiots for wearing the mask in the first place and as far as I am concerned are losers for that “statement”
here ya go from one of the links posted;
sorry, our bikers are idiots for opologizing
Good Morning to you as well. Funny, huh, that the Revs are up early. Have a great day. I’m outa here. Blessings.
G’morning Elliott, pups. Another gorgeous day in MN, but rain desperately needed. Lawns, flowers, crops, people stressed. In countdown mode for the Coming of the Republicans for their Sept. convention. I hear that people will be plucked up out of their clothes and swooped nekkid into the Xcel Center to witness the second coming of George W. Bush in the form of the John McSame nomination. Very scary stuff. Don’t see it alone.
John Edwards acted in a disgusting manner toward his wife and family. He is no different than Newt or Bill or any of the other liars who can only think about the dick.
What is it with these people, who have read the papers, know what is right and wrong and continue to act like assholes?
Screw him.
I think Elizabeth Edwards should divorce him and find a man who loves her and respects her.
gee perris, wanting them to lose, that’s a little harsh doncha think?
Too bad George Bush didn’t stay home, tho.
elliot, why are they opologizing?
I think they are already losers, I have no respect for them
lol — McSame is the reincarnation of GWB.
I don’t envy you with that crowd coming to town, altho if in the end they do leave the way you described, it will be well worth the hassle of having them.
off to the gym, it’s a beutiful day, see all later
What gets me is that he ran for President while this was hanging over his head. WTF?
I think your blame is misdirected. Blame the IOC, not the athletes. They aren’t there to fulfill your political ideals. They are there to race – which is what they have devoted their whole life to.
Oh, and good morning everyone :)
Watching this convention thingie unfold in my fair town(s) is pretty revolting. And having Darth and Boy George here ups the urp factor considerably. Biggest issue du jour? Limited number of bars can stay open until 4:00 a.m. if they apply for a permit and pay $2,500 for the privilege. Now let me ask you this. Bottom line notwithstanding, is it really worth it to extend hours so that the People of George can get wasted in the wee small hours? Apparently not. No takers so far. Bwahahahaha!!
she went along with the lie.
sorry, but she did.
and edwards said, what was ‘with him’ was ‘hubris’….
mornin’ elliot and pups!!!
thanks for the schedule, still figuring out what is on my catv.
fox news having the athlete denied a visa on as a guest.
mentioned edwards’ girl toy-my words, don’t know if it was a ‘teaser’ or that was ‘it’.
now THAT’S funny.
The Republicans are the party of Family Values. And as we all know, the family that stays out all night drinking together, stays together.
no takers aHAHa
morning Sander how are the pups?
Any new pics?
it’s like there’s a bubble on top of us here. The big storms come in and go right around us. We’ve not had a good soaking rain for quite a while. Sorry NE folks. I can’t imagine how awful it’s been for you.
Morning dmac, you must still be in sensory overload now that you speeding around the Internet and the high-end teeVee channels.
I think you accidently linked a neanderthal cartoon site. They’re all anti-Obama.
Pakistan Ambassador to the US up on CSPAN
email questions to journal@c-span.org
rofl–oh, yes, i am..now i can youtube and started that blog page…..just spent a week visiting family and friends, and bff since high school gave me his old ipod…774 songs, plus got more music while there…and got a set of cords at radio shack-needed charger-one cord is the hook-up to the stereo for the ipod, first thing i did when i walked in the door, hooked it up….more overload…….and found an old canon A610 on ebay for 36 dollars, was here when i got home, so have that to play with when i get a cord and mem card.
lotsa new toys. a blast. will be doing all kind of things with them…been a while. will be exploring for a while. changed browsers and downloaded stuff to make my tri-plane computer run a little better……..heh.
my brain really was fried when i left town, needed a breather. but played with everyone’s laptops while there. and got some more ‘tips’ from my mac guru…ha.
Try some of these from the Chicago Tribune.
Are there face masks we can wear to filter out the toxic fumes from domestic politics?
http://www.comics.com
if only!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Edwards cheated. But that’s not my focus. A pattern is emerging and it’s scaring the hell out of me. Tell me, how did they know about the adultery? How did they know about his manager giving her money? Could it be they’ve been listening in and checking financial records? It appears to me that they’ve decided to take down any democrat that is either an established leader or an up-and-comer. I was just reading yesterday about the mayor of Baltimore. She’s doing a helluva job improving that city and probably has a bright future. Bam….she’s being investigated. And, I’ve never been satisfied on the reasons they gave for looking at Spitzer’s records. Not to mention the Detroit mayor. It’s not just selective prosecution, they’re listening in.
I’ve read Haqqani’s book on Pakistan. Thought he was a solid citizen before I saw him shilling for Pakistan this morning.
http://www.amazon.com/Pakistan…..038;sr=1-1
You betcha.
Though they did the Ds a favor by taking down Spitzer sooner rather than later. He’s one nasty SOB.
Why not just knock on their door and tell them you’d like to inject yourself into their personal lives and then tell them how you’d like them to live their lives.
Funny how we can turn on those who weeks ago we revered because they didn’t live up to our expectations.
Very strange.
The lead front page article on the Philly Inquirer Currents (Opinion) section this morning is “Minorities and Abortion” written by the chair of the board of the Guttmacher Institute. It’s a good piece. It is not on their web site! But John Yoo’s piece of crap is. (I refuse to link to garbage).
Just sent them an e-mail. Don’t like the feel of this.
All my idols have feet of clay.
Once saw Helen Thomas on a panel. Her words of wisdom: If you think you ever want to run for office, you need to make that decision when you’re 8 years old and live the rest of your life accordingly.
All of mine are dead and each one was, like us all, a flawed human being.
Well, Obama has certainly done that.
Good Morning, SD.
You just made two really good points. If you missed reading it, Ian lead an excellent post regarding empathy and sympathy yesterday. Our Dr. Dick had some really insightful things to say, along with a lot of other folks comments.
Oh, yeah, we’re all human.
Gee, looking at that ABC’s This Week lineup, do ya think somebody will try to paint Bill Richardson as a Librul? Of course, in comparison to the rest of the folks on there, I guess he is.
And Elliot asks:
I’m not sure it can count as a pwning when it is done by being willfully obtuse. And the IOC definitely was a willing participant WITH China
Mornin’, demi. I missed all the posts since yesterday afternoon. Went to a memorial for an old friend who died this week. Fell off a ladder. Nothing like a memorial filled with old beach people, smugglers, fishermen and the like.
victoria posted this video of Greenpeace in action on Kirk’s thread
absolutely love it, can’t believe what these guys do on the real front lines.
Unbelievable clips. awesome.
: FEET OF CLAY – “The phrase comes from the Old Testament (Dan.2:31-32). There the Hebrew captain Daniel interprets a dream for Nebuchadnezzar, founder of the new Babylonian Empire. Nebuchadnezzar had dreamed of a giant idol with golden head, silver arms and chest, brass thighs and body, and iron legs. Only the feet of this image, compounded of iron and potter’s clay, weren’t made wholly of metal. Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that the clay feet of the figure made it vulnerable, that it prophesized the breaking apart of his empire. Over the years readers of the Bible were struck with the phrase ‘feet of clay’ in the story and it was used centuries ago to describe an unexpected flaw or vulnerable point in the character of a hero or any admired person.” From the “Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins” by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997).
Reminds me that not all my idols are dead. Some very courageous people in Greenpeace.
On Meet the Press it was noted that it was David Broder’s 400th appearance.
Sigh.
Oh, I was thinking Gumby and Mr. Bill.
Good morning all. I’d wear a breathing mask if I was in Beijing.
yes! they jump to it. Heroes.
Memorials are not my favorite way to spend a Saturday, but, um, they do happen. My condolences.
Here’s the link to that thread:
http://firedoglake.com/2008/08…..rstanding/
Morning MM!
oldgold that is the problem with that show. Stale.
Good morning all
OG was that at two times a year for two hundred years
yes, my condolences SD
As with everything else these days there are tons of money to be made and the IOC has become as corrupt as any other governing body, governments included.
You forgot the “dammit” after Gumby’s name.
And, thanks for the photo.
They give new meaning to the phrase, “put your money where your mouth is.”
Here’s GreenPeace’s assessment of how green the Olympics are.
I would disagree with your assessment only to the extent that the IOC has historically been just as corrupt as any government and not “has become.”
Think Berlin 1936 for starters and then add in the career of Avery Brundage as the primary examples.
The hot air he has produced there is considered a major cause of global warming.
Time to bicycle to the farmer’s market to get some organic heirloom tomatoes & grass fed beef. BBL.
Thanks for that, Ellie.
Some sharings are more educational than simple rants.
See, being on the Left Coast, some mornings I’m still working on my first sip of coffee and others, who might have been awake up to 3 hours earlier are on their 12th cup and are already really amped up. If ya know what I mean. :)
Ian’s up with
Roller Coaster In the Markets
sounds delicious.
mMmm steak, sweet corn’s in here, one of the favorite parts of summer.
FDL: Leaving no knit unpicked.
I kidding. Kind of.
Richardson’s saying he doesn’t want to get partisan on energy, that there’s plenty of blame to go around. No, the correct answer is that if we start drilling offshore now then in 10 years we’ll still only be producing 1% of our oil.
I hate Democrats even more than Pukes. What a kissass Richardson is.
Has Suskind’s bombshell thoroughly been ignored?
i’m not turnin’ on anyone. some people are. he made choices, so did his wife, so did his mistress.
it is what it is.
their business, except that he was running for president while he did it.
like someone commented on fdl–an affair is no big deal if you marry the mistress i guess.
and ecahn, love tomatoes, just had breakfast of sandwich of heirlooms from the market yesterday, and croissant and a little amish bacon…….wow.
Late and barely awake. RevBev & Elliot, here’s my latest favorite quote re impeachment, by Ian recently:
“And cooperation is needed by men like George Bush. It can be active cooperation, like that of the torturers, judge and prosecutors. It can be passive cooperation, as when “impeachment is off the table”, but cooperation is needed.”
OH that’s a gem, thanks for pointing it out.
Best post!!!
I was at least glad to see Richardson point out, the MSM generally ignored point, that maybe the Oil Corps could do some drilling on the 68,000,000 acres of un-drilled offshore licenses.
How come everybody jumps on the meme that Bad, Bad, Russia is “imperialistic?” It is almost the apex of hypocrisy for the United Empire of Corporate Greed to call any country imperialistic. So many Repuke types have their own personal greedy stake in Russia’s “near abroad” that it isn’t difficult to follow the money and the motivations.
Just imagine if Russia was installing missile bases in Canada, Mexico or Cuba – oops, that’s right already been there done that! Gee Dubya has done pretty much everything in his power to bring back the era of foreign policy by confrontation that some of us hoped had vanished with the Berlin Wall. To impugn Russia for not respecting Georgia’s sovereign territory begs the question of what is the US doing in Iraq, Iran and many other locations worldwide!
I didn’t want them to do ANYTHING political, yet they did, the opologized for wearing air filtration which they needed under the circumstances
they made a political opology and they should not have
