Thirty-four years ago today, Richard Nixon resigned because he violated the Constitution. Today, they’d give him the Medal of Freedom.
Several weeks ago, we announced our new PAC, Accountability Now, which was designed to go after incumbent members of Congress who continue to facilitate the kind of lawlessness that forced Nixon from office. As Glenn Greenwald notes today, "accountability of that sort for our highest political leaders is today inconceivable."
We hope to change that.
Glenn:
The New York Times today has an article — both online and in its print edition (here) — reporting on our new organization and today’s Money Bomb. The NYT article describes the next two ad campaigns we have prepared — aimed at several of the 250 co-sponsors of the House Resolution actually demanding a naval blockade of Iran (which includes Steny Hoyer), as well as a campaign to demand a full-scale investigation into the anthrax case (much more on the anthrax issue later today). Numerous other articles have been written regarding the new campaign. The Wall St. Journal — following up on the article it published back in June on the new organization — is in the process of writing a much lengthier, more detailed article, to be published immediately after today’s Money Bomb.
A successful start is absolutely vital for ensuring that this new organization’s arrival is loud, aggressive, and taken very seriously. Funding is the only currency the political establishment recognizes as an indicator of strength. The more successful this kick-off campaign is, the more news it will generate, the louder the message will be heard, the more damage can be done between now and November, and beyond, to its deserving targets (and, therefore, the more constructive the progress that can be achieved). The magnitude of today’s Money Bomb will determine what the reach and impact of our campaign will be between now and the election.
As Glenn says, Accountability Now is already demanding a Congressional investigation of the Anthrax case, and we’re pro-actively launching a campaign against members of Congress who are co-sponsoring a naval blockade of Iran (an act of war).
If you’re one of the more than 3200 people who have pledged to donate to the Money Bomb, please do. We’ll be updating the totals throughout the day.
And in case Richard Nixon isn’t enough for you, remember….
Two years ago today, we drove Joe Lieberman out of the party.

Spazeboy reminded me that today was the day Ned Lamont won the CT primary.
I don’t know how I could possibly forget that.
My apologies for jumping in here Jane.
OT Breaking – From Ron Suskind’s website:
Just added $50 to da Bomb. This should be interesting when it goes off.
And Good Morning Jane! How are you and the poodles this morning?
Two years ago today, we drove Joe Lieberman out of the party.
And a bloody good day it was! Too bad we didn’t drive him just a wee bit further…..(supply your own preferred destination). *g*
I’m in. Thanks to everyone involved. You are da bomb.
Thanks, Matt!
We are doing well. Very big day planned here at the Poodle Palace.
(bows) Konnichiwa, Lady Jane.
I’m assuming the $24K+ figure shown at ActBlue is in addition to whatever has been pledged since ActBlue doesn’t do pledges. Not too shabby. Gotta sit down with my budget and see what I can do.
Whoo Hoo – day one – Money Bombs Away! :~))))
I’m sorry, but the amount of attention given to the anthrax attacks really pisses me off. Yes, 5 people died and 17 others were infected. Yes, I believe there was some sort of very high level coordination of this, that means conspiracy. All of this is interesting stuff and we should all be outraged.
However, one in three women in the military are sexually assaulted or raped. Hello! That’s a lot more, a lot, lot, lot, lot, lot more than 17. And we got deaths too! Eight women from Fort Hood Texas have died of non-combat related injuries after being raped, and there’s many, many more suspicious deaths after being raped.
So women being raped and murdered in our own military, by other soldiers or contractors far out number the deaths and injuries from anthrax. There is obviously a cover up or conspiracy regarding this matter. The pentagon has actually forbidden the women in charge of looking into this matter from even speaking to Congress, just last week. But for some reason, this story is so damn marginal compared to the attention given to the anthrax case…. Why?
Do we think that little of women in this country?
Is that it? If American women serving their country, putting their lives on the line for our freedom are killed by our own soldiers, there’s no big story here because the victims are all women?
Honestly, if one in three male soldiers were being molested or raped, if numerous men were shooting themselves in the back of the head with a rifle, and then burning their genitals off, and the pentagon labeled these deaths as suicides, would we really all just ignore it?
It just boggles my mind. Screw the anthrax coverup. There was probably a woman in Iraq raped yesterday, not 7 years ago, and there will probably be one raped or killed tomorrow as well. I think Congress should either stop their next session or create a special session, just for the case of Army Private Lavena Johnson. Please Google “Lavena Johnson” and then ask yourselves, honestly, are you more outraged by the anthrax attacks? Really?
Another auspicious sign . . . On August 8, 1876, Thomas Edison patented the mimeograph.
If you are a DFH of a certain vintage, this news will bring a certain familiar aroma to mind.
Before there were bloggers in their PJs sitting in their parents’ basements, there were DFHs in university basements taking turns cranking out the mimeographs.
Instead of Google, try checking this out.
Just added something to the bomb. Hope we have a great day with lots of money coming in. Thanks, Jane, for all you do. The best to you and Howie.
why does it have to be one or the other?
Raise your voice on rape in the military, but why should we just get over the Anthrax Attacks? I don’t understand your either/or
Got nailed in the Navy once for putting out a one sheet screed on the excesses of the security department on base. Aw, the aroma. Confined in a small room for an extended period of time with one of those things would give you a headache you wouldn’t believe.
Just added $25 to da bom. I remember 08/08/74 – a good night party for King Richard in San Antonio, Tx. $25 bought a lot of beer back then. :-)
Oh the aroma, I really was happy when the electrical models came along and I could back off of the machine a few feet
I just gave $100.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Thanks, Pach.
Poodles say “hi” to the Chihuauas.
I just added $50.00 and a $2.50 tip.
accountability NOW!
Will we get updates on how we are doing, Jane?
If you would care to check, FDL has covered both issues fairly extensively with both Jane and Christy writing about Ms Johnson and the efforts to bring her death and the cover-up out into the open.
Crimes of violence against women are ongoing problems not just in the military but all around the world.
Bio-terror attacks against selected media outlets and politicians are just as major a problem in a separate fashion.
Both are heinous crimes. Both are being covered by FDL
$30,000 and climbing

Christy wrote a very heartfelt post about Lavena Johnson and her own history as a rape victim.

You might want to rethink these comments.
The Bomb has grown by about $10,000 this morning.
Peterr,
I’m not saying the rape and murder of women in the military is being completely ignored. In fact I only found out about it by reading blogs like this one. What I’m saying is there are progressives starting a national campaign and daily devoting space and resources to a never ending all consuming demand to know the truth about the anthrax attacks of 7 years ago.
Compare that to the level of involvement, the level of interests and doggedness concerning these rapes and murders.
Yes I had already read and appreciated Christy Hardin Smith’s post. But is that it? We covered this horror, so move on to investigating a crime of lesser proportion given the raw number of victims. Color of Change is doing good work, great work, but you have to admit the interest level in the progressive community isn’t the same for military rape/murder as compared to anthrax. I’m surprised by this.
Done! So fun! Can’t wait for the final total tonight. I’ve been waiting for this.
Thanks Jane, for everything, but for your part in this project and the early and huge linky.
hehehe
comeon, pups. Let’s make history with this one!
also,DUGG!!!
YOU CAN DIG TOOOOOO!!!
I’m off to the rest of the webz to post links and diggs!

pretty please?
I donated this morning and fully support all efforts to accelerate the extincton of DINOs.
That said, I think “money bomb” is a bad marketing tagline for a progressive political activity and particularly tasteless when “detonated” during the two days separating the Hiroshima and Nagasaki anniversaries.
Thanks Jane. I put in $25, but as you know I’m in this for the long haul.
In addition to $10 a month to FDL, small donations to the ACLU and Russ Feingold’s Progressive Patriots, I husband my meager resources to funnel where you request. No one gets it right every time, but for me you are the accessible, visionary, funny, and pragmatic liberal leader.
Major props to AZMatt and Pach for their very generous donations.
OT, I know there is understandable tension within FDL about a third party approach. Right now the Democratic party is horse shit. (Deepest apologies to Mary and all other horse lovers). With that said, I think we can learn a lot about tactics, nothing else, from the white supremacists, who coined the term “conservative.” Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond and many others used “conservative” as code to segregate themselves from Democrats who supported integration. Over the long haul Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond accomplished a lot more for the political agenda of white supremacists than George Wallace, the leader of a third party.
I’m broke.
So I donated. If the money really hurts me, I can give up $3/day coffee….that’s over $1000/year!
I hope today is HUGE for Accountability Now. Nothing would make me happier.
Hi. I had trouble giving $$ online. It must be my computer.
Is there a USPS street or P.O. Box address place where I can donate?
Please respond. I don’t want to be left out. (And I’ll add a tip!)
Good morning all.
Thanks very much. It’s very much appreciated.
Done. Jane, you have become a force of nature. No wonder cheney and the like have dreams of rabid Hamshers.
No Prisoners!
Very respectfully, I’m asking you to apologize to Jane for the tone of your off topic and very inaccurate comment.
Where your comment really screams ignorance is wrt Nancy Keenan and NARAL. Since you claim to be so devoted to the fight against rape, please by all means, tell us who with a national voice has been tougher on NARAL and PP than FDL.
Done, thanks for the link.
Your insistence that there are 5 victims in the Anthrax case is what surprises me. The case is actually yet another piece of the puzzle that is the global lawlessness of the current Executive Branch. There are not 5 victims here as you suggest. There are hundreds of millions.
Hi Jane,
Packed a little green in the money bomb with a tip. Please notify when it will detonate as I would like to stick my fingers in my ears and try to save what’s left of my hearing. Thanks for all you do and for all the beautiful pups out there that I enjoy reading almost every day. Good Vibrations on all of ya.
