As Jane mentioned yesterday, back in 2003, McSame helped DHL screw the people of Ohio out of thousands of jobs. Now that's he facing the political backlash campaigning in Ohio, he's shocked, shocked -- and wants to get to the bottom of it.
Sen. John McCain promised Thursday to call for a congressional hearing and Justice Department review into the potential loss of some 8,000 jobs in this Ohio town as his presidential campaign once again faced uncomfortable questions about its ties to Washington lobbyists.
Why have a hearing? He can just ask his buddy Rick, who got rich in the deal, what went down. In the meantime, McSame heard plenty from this angry Ohioan.
Finally given a chance to address Sen. John McCain, Mary Houghtaling choked up Thursday and began to cry.
Wiping away her tears, she told the presumptive Republican presidential nominee how a controversial corporate deal he backed in 2003 as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee -- the sale of Airborne Express cargo service to a German conglomerate that owns DHL and the subsequent expansion of the air freight hub here -- had gone horribly wrong.
"Never before have so many people been abandoned at once," said Houghtaling, who runs a local hospice. "It is inconceivable to think about losing 10,000 jobs in the first wave, and the estimates run in the 30,000 range as the wave continues."
McSame's McLame response?
"I can't assure you that this train wreck isn't going to happen, but I will do everything in my power to avert it," McCain told two dozen elected officials and community leaders during a 45-minute meeting on the campus of Wilmington College.
I'm sure he'll get right on that.

This is a plane wreck, not a train wreck, n’est pas?
Now to be absolutely clear, this doesn’t mean McCain’s going to, you know, actually show up for this hearing. He’s just going to ask others to show up and discuss things while he’s out and about running over minivans in his bus.
Oh, wait — that wasn’t McCain, that was Joe Lieberman in McCain’s bus, running over the minivan. My bad.
Looks like McSFB needs to bring Blackwell back to rig the election in Ohio.
Was Short Ride sitting in the lap of the bus driver? Inquiring minds…
Morning, eCAHN!
I’d hope they do investigate this train wreck, and pin on McCain and his lobbyist buddies however much blame ought to be pinned to them.
“. . . but of course, ‘everything in my power’ isn’t all that much. You do realize that I only speak for myself — I don’t even have the power to speak for my own campaign.”
What surprised me is that he was not challenged on his response by another audience member? Are people pre-screened for his events or are they just not informed voters?
I always assumed we were watching a goodly portion of the 23%ers.
Those who are not sitting in one of their many palaces, counting their money, that is.
s
Yes.
Both.
Jesus, what a revolting picture to greet a person this early in the day.
Question for the Lurking Mod:
Are we not using any linkies to AP now at the Lake? Just askin’ for future reference…. supplied one for a comment I made a few numbers earlier in the previous thread and it disappeared. No problems, given the fact they’re twits, but just wanted to clarify fdl policy. Thanks.
I was informed on the radio today that obama is “taking a vacation in hawaii” for two weeks and mkkkain is gonna try to score points and hope obama isn’t going to hit back
is obama really taking vacation and does that make any sense?
Gregory, The Washington Post’s public editor was asked why the paper did not have a lot of photos in comparison to Obama. They gave a lame excuse but I think that we know the reason. I have another question about McCain, though. He does not seem to have many events that are in the evening and when he does, such as the one in LA with the lime green background, he acts even goofier. Has anyone else noticed that?
Everything in his power…
right after he offers up his wife in the Buffalo Chip contest.
We are all trollops now….
Obama’s going to Hawaii for a week.
The McCainiacs will doubtless try to gain traction with action.
I wouldn’t trust those guys on anything.
Sundowner’s Syndrome?
Hmm,
something to pay more attention to.
especially now that Newt’s waiting in the wings, rubbing his hands together and licking his lips.
Newt licking his lips is something I don’t ever what to see.
Get out the political shovel and srart digging the dirt on McSame….all the FCC sweetheart deals at the Communications committee to turn our media into a corporate monopoly as right wing spin for opemers. Clear Channel pops right up. What other committees is he on?
Armed Services… Military contract pork scandal a political anchor… define.
Commerce I’ll thimk of somethimg.
Science no stem cell research allowed, and Transportation…broken bridgees anf infrastructure under his watch.
Indian Affairs; All those scandals at the casinos, indictments…make the connections. Abramoff:
McCain Received $100,000 From Firm Of Abramoff Notoriety according to SAm Stein Huff post today.
Hmmm…energy and commerce, science, and Official Conduct…could have some fun with that one if someone wants to do the research. Los of bills and perks to crony capitalist on the curporate dole. Any thoughts?
Iirc, heard somewhere on the idjit box something about his being on holiday one week (vs. two) but don’t take that for truth; was only listening with a small percentage of one ear. *g*
Wrt “making sense”, seems like the guy should be in need of some down time with his family; otoh, I sure understand where you’re comin’ from…..and he ain’t likely to be left alone by trad med, no matter where he goes.
Yeah, I loved Newt’s appearance as chief clown with the R drilling circus in DC. No one has written him new lines since he closed down the govt.
We don’t have a ban on linking to the AP. I don’t see any links in any of your comments in the previous thread and there isn’t anything trapped in the filters. No links have been removed from any comments this AM that I am aware of. Try posting the link again on the previous thread, maybe Ted Steven’s truck is parked on the toobz somewhere between your house and The Lake?
Obama’s from Hawaii. He’s been campaigning for a year and a half. I don’t see the problem.
I guess the Rethugs figure they can regain their momentum if they bring back the scumbags from the 90’s. With a new Contract on Amerika.
Yes, but sadly, and unsurprisingly, the same tearful Ohioan then was described as: “The tearful Houghtaling seemed to appreciate McCain’s attention, saying she looked forward to him landing Air Force One at the air park.”
Ms. Houghtaling, I don’t mean to be rude here, but you might want to consider getting your head out of your nether regions for just one minute and look around. This guy HELPED this situation happen. He could care less about helping you.
Seriously, these people drive me crazy.
obama is assuming that he will “win” in November and has, in consequence, told the vast majority of his supporters to take a hike and that makes no sense whatsoever. His campaign is under the assumption that he does not have to proffer any substantive plans, does not have to listen to progressives, does not have to anything but smile, wave his arms and listen to his corporate masters. Basically he and his campaign are doing everything they can to screw this thing up. The fact that McSame is even close to him in the polls is ridiculous.
Yeah, well. These things take time. Ohio gave Bush the presidency, then within 2 years, kicked out pretty much every major Republican office holder in the state.
Obama has to close the deal with this people. It’s on him — and us.
Several days ago, Swampland had an article on McCain’s pool reporters being bored with their assignment, since they went to one or two events during the day and then back to the hotel by six. The debates should be interesting to watch but will the audience notice, if he doesn’t answer the question he was asked?
The Cleveland Plains has been running articles on McCain’s involvement, so maybe somebody who reads the paper will let her know.
Obama and McCain both realize that the Olympics are likely to suck a lot of the public attention for the next two weeks, and the only way to get past that is to buy ads during the Olympic broadcasts.
After that come the two conventions — two periods of high intensity effort, where each candidate will be deep in the planning and execution of one event and looking for a way to respond/react/anticipate what will come out of the other.
In short, this strikes me as a good time to take some time to recharge the batteries, maybe spend a little time off-camera doing some strategic thinking and planning, and getting ready for the push to come.
As I look at the polls, McCain’s tried throwing all kinds of stuff at Obama, and nothing’s been able to stick enough dent Obama’s leads. Why can’t McCain — with his superior name recognition, his vast GOP network of supporters, and the power of the White House behind him — bring Obama down? Far from making me concerned about Obama’s campaign, this pleases me no end.
I’ve got concerns about the way Obama is campaigning, but his poll numbers aren’t part of them.
You’re right. And on the plus side, I have in-laws who live in Ohio, and who have been considerably Republicans (and die-hard Wal-Mart lovers) since Hector was a pup. To a person, they’re voting for Obama this time around, so there’s reason for (dare I say it?) hope.
Aha, the debates are in the evening. Don’t know how Sundowner’s works. Is it strictly a function of the time of day, or can he rest up during the day to enhance his performance. Asking so I’ll know how to assess the evidence from the debates.
I’m with you on this. And the last time I checked, Hawaii is a state and there are, you know, like voters there.
Thanks for the post BT and good morning all.
Thankee for your time in looking *smooch*……probably can’t even blame it on the truck this time; most likely went clinking off somewhere else without hitting submit.
I’m not that informed either. The Florida senior moment happened during the day so he might just need more rest which is why he has fewer events. It seems to me that the media should be covering his lapses in memory just to inform the electorate.
I think the campaign has been purposely low key since the end of the primaries. That’s not to say there’s not a little overconfidence in the campaign, but after the last 7 congressional cycles I can understand their attitude. I expect we’ll see a quite different campaign after the convention. There are still problems with some of the Clinton supporters and I think there’s more going on behind the scenes than we know about. The Clintonites have the ability to make the convention ugly and I think both Obama and Clinton want to avoid that. They are, after all, politicians. At this point all I’m doing is hidin’ in the bush and watchin’.
Money Bomb! upstairs
Bill Clinton gets choice slot at Democratic Convention
two nights of Clintons
Oh, yes. He does look deranged. Just to think how often it will appear if he is elected…or even during the Convention. Ugh
That’s better than one night each of Reid and Pelosi. At least Bill is an engaging speaker and Hillary can be. Am I gonna watch it, you may ask? I’ve got a coffee table stacked with books that need reading. They tend to get contrary when ignored.
Good Morning Blue Texan and Firedogs -
dear god, I’m with gregory waaay upthread, that pic is cuhreepy
nice optics, really
I think McCain’s increasingly out of sync and sometimes downright bizarre statements and performances of late raises some serious questions. Read more.http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008.....cuity.html

Here’s youtube of that lady asking her question about DHL and the lost jobs, along with mcsame’s non-response.
apologies if it’s already been posted. up with sick kitty last nite, & mental acuity less than stellar today. Yeah. That’s the reason, uh huh, ayup. *sigh*
Our flamingly right-wing anti-abortion charmer of a neighbor called & left a msg for us yestidie. Wants to ask about Sierra Club, whut it is, whut we think of it.
Hmmmmm. S. Club just endorsed Obama, and we have had O’s sign in front of our property for ages. Hmmmmm.
Hubby & I are figuratively drawing straws for who gets the joyous privilege of calling mr. winger back.
- one a doze guys who repeats the same talking point 50 times a min., asks endless [rhetorical?!?] questions, but has an unbroken record of never having listened to an answer; but he’s friendly to us, sorta.
Can’t give the guy a computer link, on account-uh, even tho he’s younger than we are, he’s more of the Teddy-Steve school of computer tech, doesn’t have one, won’t touch the infernal machines - strange boogie-men ethers in the airs because of things like that, don’tcha-know.
Anyone HERE wanna volunteer to make the call? Nah, nebbermind. I’ll git to’it…. somehow… mebbe if i print out selected bits of what Wiki says… that might work, but is it o.k. to “clean it up?” All those extra links and weird thingies in the margins might scare the poor guy witless.
omg why me?! Because this is whut i do…. and u guys who man phone-banks think u have a hard job. HAH! Have I got a CALL for YOU!?! [hint: go to the bathroom 1st, select a real comfy chair, have a drink there so ya don’t git dehydrated, etc. NO SNARK!]
Last I checked, it’s still a state too. whu?
David. I can’t decide about yer new system. Fer sure, I’ll never git outta
purge-a-toryEPU in perpetuity. Oh well. *waves to last departing pups*
