The polls are closed and we're waiting for the first results in Tennessee's 9th Congressional district. This may have been the nastiest, most racist primary in the country. Adding to the fun is that Emily's List had endorsed Tinker, who then went on to accuse Cohen, a Jew, of being associated with the KKK and being against prayer in schools. Cohen's record on both racial and gender issues, including abortion, is essentially perfect. What makes it more fun, as Blue Oregon points out, and as the flyer shows, is that this isn't late breaking racism and jew-baiting, it's been going on for a long time. Either Emily's list didn't do their homework, or they didn't care.
Obama came out with a statement smacking Tinker earlier today, but as usual, it was too late to make any difference in the race.
Prediction: as a friend pointed out, Harold Ford has also come out against Tinker. That probably means Cohen is winning.
Let's see if that prediction comes true. Drop new vote-count results in comments, and let's hope Cohen wins.
Update (8:14 CST) If it continues this way, there isn't going to be much to watch:
Based on early votes and absentee ballots results, Cohen leads with 80.56 percent of the votes. His main challengers, attorney Nikki Tinker and state Rep. Joe Towns Jr., trail with 17.22 percent and 1.44 percent, respectively.
Update 2, 9:22 CST(h/t Marion):
80% of results in:
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 42,664 79%
Nikki Tinker (D) 10,189 19%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 808 1%
James Gregory (D) 164 0%
Isaac Richmond (D) 160 0%
Update 3: Cohen Declares Victory!

Hi, Ian. Fingers definitely crossed here that the odious Tinker goes down to an ignominious defeat. I saw that disgusting commercial before it was scrubbed off the toobz and couldn’t believe that anyone would say “I support” to any part of it.
Jus Cohens!

Lieberman as “potent” VP pick for McSame?
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/46629.html
My contempt knows no bounds.
Punaise will be SOOOO jealous!
The problem with that idea is that “the base” (read hardcore fundie whack jobs) think that Joey The Repellent is A LIBRUL!!!111!!! So McSame might be cutting off his nose to spite his face.
Excellent!
Oh please. Please. Please. Please!
Please please please please please choose Lieberman. The wingnuts would stay home in droves. Depends Twins jokes ahoy! It would be a bloodbath. Bring him on!
Emily’s list, hello? it’s called teh google!
Agree completely. I just cannot bear the thought of his ugly mug, whiny voice and oily manner getting more press…no matter what his choice would mean for the McSame effort.
I loathe the fellow.

Thank you, MiS.
Thank you, ES.
Trying to find a live results link for this race. No luck so far.
Great news
You’re the best, dakine!
Plus: It would energize the base, who just can’t seem to hate McCain with the same vitriol they hated Hillary.
Minus: All of the Democratic members of the “club” who won’t criticize him now will still give him a free ride.
And then there’s Tim Tagaris’s worst nightmare: they win, McCain kicks and we have to say the words “President Lieberman.”
Oy. Do they really want to make me that paranoid for the next three months?
Girlfriend, may I buy you one?
A “potent” VP - Is this a viagra commercial
With 17% reporting:
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 22,467 80%
Nikki Tinker (D) 5,088 18%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 405 1%
Isaac Richmond (D) 97 0%
James Gregory (D) 91 0%
From the first time I saw Steve Cohen speak in a committee hearing on CSpan I knew he was a keeper. I’m trying to remember what the hearing was, but I do remember what he had to say was stunningly progressive with no apology.
Please. Jane just gave me nightmares!
You is simply brilliant, w-d-d!!!
(Recovery period prevented earlier reply)
;~D
There’s not enough Viagra in the world to make Liarman an advertisement for potency.
My guess is that this is the official state site, but they don’t seem to post as results are tabulated…
Tim would either leave the country or shoot himself.
One thing for sure, he’d never step foot in CT again.
I don’t know of any poll data to back it up but I suspect at this point Joe is reviled by both ends of the political spectrum. Republican voters might prefer him to a librul Democrat but that doesn’t exactly mean he doesn’t make their skin crawl, much like the effect he has on us sentient folk.
In other words, go for it, Johnny!
And thanks very much to McClatchy for clarifying the issue of his potency and providing us with a mental image even more repugnant than the region of his anatomy he typically presents to the camera.
With 25% reporting, the percentages seem to be holding:
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 24,511 80%
Nikki Tinker (D) 5,599 18%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 435 1%
Isaac Richmond (D) 100 0%
James Gregory (D) 99 0%
Liarman, that is.
Waiter, please? And, I’ll have whatever the lady is having.
I like that trend.
Remember, NARAL gave Liarman their official seal of approval in CT. The wingnuts will love that one. Somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen.
Lot’s to choose from on YouTube. Any of these ring a bell?
Oh, pshaw! Just a momentary flash, I’m sure.
Of course, there’s no way of knowing if these results reflect state-wide results or just “patches.” I’m still trying to find a county breakdown in case anyone here knows what’s where in TN.
Harold Ford, Jr, needs to resign as head of the DLC. Regardless of his late statement on the Tinker campaign:
Hardly a denunciation. It’s nonetheless quite clear who he has supported. His family’s money went to purchase those ads:
Call me, Harold.
With your resignation.
If 24,511 is 80% of 25% it is over

What, other than race, explains how Barack rolled up 90-10 margins among black voters while running against Hillary Clinton, wife of the man novelist Toni Morrison dubbed “our first black president”?
Indeed, so one-sided was the primary coverage in favor of Barack as the first African-American with a real chance to be president, even “Saturday Night Live” took to mocking the mainstream media.
As for black radio, on “The Tom Joyner Morning Show,” “Michael Baisden Show” and “The Steve Harvey Morning Show,” which together may reach 20 million folks, there is “little pretense of balance,” writes Jim Rutenberg of The New York Times. “More often than not the Obama campaign is discussed as the home team.”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/uc/200…../op_336908
“What, other than race, explains how Barack rolled up 90-10 margins among black voters” Well pg A17 Aug 6 of the NY Times has an article about Jim Martin beating an African American in Georgia to run against Senator Saxby Chambliss.
Why did the African American lose in Georgia in a Democratic Primary? Maybe because the African American Vernon Jones voted for Bush twice and then had the nerve to put Obama’s face on his campaign stuff.
But the Democratic voters saw through this and elected the guy who would support Obama more the WHITE GUY.
Pat when you make a categorical statement do you ever have facts behind it?
Voters are paying attention this election Pat its your worse nightmare after all race works best when there are no real issues of concern to voters.
This year the war and the economy are worrying voters so much that concern over who would be best on the issues is greater than racial concerns.
The GOP cannot win without hate topping voters concerns, they can’t win if voters are paying attention.
Just why does KO have you on?
Now 31% are reporting, and the percentages hold. YAY! (crosses fingers, not wanting to jinx anything by premature “yaying.”)
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 26,313 80%
Nikki Tinker (D) 6,024 18%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 482 1%
Isaac Richmond (D) 111 0%
James Gregory (D) 106 0%
Hah, nice one, Teddy! ;-)
Memphis is Shelby County.
Lieberman would call for a reversal of Roe v Wade if it would please his BFF. The man has no principles whatsoever.
However, I agree it won’t happen. Huckabee would be more likely.
Congrats, Marion with Martin’s victory yesterday…!
Beer’s fine, ma’am. Thanky!
I don’t see results for any R’s in the Tennessee 9th. Am I missing something?
And please take Rahm with him.
That was dumb I need a glass of wine
McSame and Huck — Doofus and Rufus
I don’t think Roe v. Wade will ever be overturned.
Without it, they have no bludgeon to get out the fundy vote.
Had me fooled.
Math hurts my head.
We were SOOOO pleased! I’m not sure if he can prevail against the odious Saxby Chambliss, but I’m keeping fingers crossed.

See an African American makes racist claims against a Jewish person and they seem to be losing (are final results in yet)?
Pat Buchanan was wrong about America and race its not about groups trying to get get the most it seems that different groups really do care about fairness first.
I hope this trend keeps on going:)
Too late, w-d-d, you is now on the LOL-707-LOL ‘watch’ list.
;~D
They could manufacture one and they always have the fall-back wedge issue of all those flag-burning same-sex couples trying to undermine America by defiling the sacred institution of marriage.
38% reporting, % holds:
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 28,850 80%
Nikki Tinker (D) 6,594 18%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 529 1%
Isaac Richmond (D) 118 0%
James Gregory (D) 109 0%
I dunno, I have faith that a President Lieberman would be a transformative leader who would genuinely drive the country on a bipartisan path ending the long national nightmare of peace, prosperity and fealty to constitution that Bush has given us.
OT All day the idiots on MSM have been talking about How BC is still pissed and talked down Obama’s saying everything is being worked out.
Tonight’s breaking news Bill Clinton to speak immediately before VP accptance speech. Anyone think the idiots will eat crow tomorrow. not
Waiter! Hit Mike.
No, really…
This is great news!
If there’s only one or no R running in that CD, then there would be no primary.
Which there is a primary for the TN 7th which has an R incumbent (Marsha Blackburn).
But the TN 9th is a solid D seat.
not at first look. I remember quite a while ago listening to Randi Rhodes on the radio a day after some hearing where Cohen asked the best questions and she didn’t know who it was. I called in along with others to pass his name on—but I can’t remember which hearing. It had to have been one of his earliest.
There’s always a chance…! I’m only concerned that Barr does energize the disillusioned Goopers that would’ve stayed home otherwise…!
second that emotion.
I know thats Snark but that is how Holy Joe would phrase it.
This is just the TN 7th Congressional District which is mostly Memphis.
Speaking of Barr is he participating in the debates
OT: why does NRO hate the troops? Ignorant Andy McCarthy writes that the 5 1/2 sentence was imposed by Judge Allred, when in fact, the penalty was determined by the same six officers who heard the case. According to McCarthy,
I guess those officers themselves just hate the troops. And they hate defenders of the commission system like ignorant Andy.
Wow … Looks like Sen. Obama just lost an endorsement ( remember we will win without him! )…
I hope Cohen is NOT too pissed off though …
We need all the Dems to stay together and strong for the GENERALS …
55% reporting now, % holding well:
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 33,887 79%
Nikki Tinker (D) 7,902 19%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 646 2%
Isaac Richmond (D) 135 0%
James Gregory (D) 126 0%
She’s certainly has been
making an ass of herselfactive lately…! ;-)Blackburn.. is running away with her race. Ugh. I can’t even come up with a real word. /s
There’s a bumper-sticker to display proudly on any vehicle with a confederate flag in the window and/or Jesus bobble-head on the dash.
Ah. Thanks! Geography was never my strong suit!
Great. Now I have performance anxiety.
Please see my #4. DWBartoo’s not the only one taking notes!
By the way ABC doesn’t get to moderate any - gee wonder why
Nobody has called it yet…? That’s an insurmountable lead at this juncture!
it is a good one :)
Saw that and thanked you at #12.
; )
Aw, yer a natural, w-d-d, just go with yer intuition, ya got the chops, fer sure.
;~D
Huh?
I have no idea if it’s been called, I’m mainly looking at the numbers. They may use the asterisk to indicated a “called for” on this site, but I’m not sure.
Fox News ticker, “Obama’s driver sentenced to 5 1/2 years.”
I’ll call it.
Hiya CT!
Obama’s driver is Secret service.
Are you pulling our legs?
Tell me you’re pulling our legs.
or the fundy money. Remember, follow the money.
Yeah. That confused the hell out of me too.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
In addition to Harold Fords wife.. The Harold Ford Group contributed to Tinker.
Harold Ford Group 06/30/2008 50.00
Operations
1050.00
They’re getting slack. They forgot to add the (D) after “Obama’s driver.” Please tell us you’re joking with this…
That’s not good news. She’s one of the lowlights when I watch CSPan’s congressional coverage.
My bad. If they haven’t yet, it’s merely an oversight.
For some reason the results from TN haven’t been updated, and are still reporting 55%. Early results from small precincts, with larger ones having more work to do? Does anyone know what kind of machines these folks vote on?
I don’t think so. I scrolled down and saw a couple of * next to some names in races with 0% reporting. Maybe the * is for incumbent?
asterisks are usually meant to indicate incumbent.
from the post:
Nope, no DLC political calculations there.
May have lost Tinker’s, but always had Cohen’s.
Ford is such an embarrassment. As nice as it would be for the Dems to have another seat I’m glad he lost his Senate bid.
Aloha, wdd!
Btw, that site has Inc and an asterisk as an indicator, did any repugs run for the US Senate seat…? I only saw D’s next to their names with Tuke leading…
New post: Ian on the Hamdan sentencing
*g*
(I think, maybe not.)
Finally. 67% reporting, % stays the same:
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 38,491 79%
Nikki Tinker (D) 9,327 19%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 742 2%
Isaac Richmond (D) 149 0%
James Gregory (D) 146 0%
Heh. At this point losing Tinker’s endorsement would be a positive move for any candidate!
Are they recalibrating the remaining voting machines?
Have they officially called it for Cohen? It almost restores some of my faith in humanity, if not the democratic process… or maybe the other way around.
I din’t see any R’s for Senate either. And in the couple of places with D’s running against R’s, the D’s are winning.
Salud!
With 71% reporting, I think we can safely say that the odious Ms. Tinker has been given a righteous spanking:
Steve Cohen* (D / Inc.) 39,581 79%
Nikki Tinker (D) 9,627 19%
Joe Towns, Jr. (D) 765 2%
Isaac Richmond (D) 155 0%
James Gregory (D) 151 0%
Thank you for saying what I was thinking, Marion!
At this point it is mathematically impossible for Cohen to lose
Why Ford was supporting Tinker—
Poor Harold, not too
