I’ve previously noted McSame’s weird habit of bragging about how "oil executives" love his energy plan. Looks like it’s paying off.
Senator John McCain received a burst of donations in June from oil company employees after he came out in favor of offshore drilling, according to a report released last week by Campaign Money Watch, a watchdog organization.
But the largest collective response from a single company, the report noted, came from the Hess Corporation. Together, Hess employees or their relatives poured out more than $300,000 to Mr. McCain’s joint fund-raising committee with the Republican National Committee in June, according to campaign finance records.
TPM has a lot more on the story, and unearthed some rather dubious looking contributions from low level Hess employees. And now the Houston Chronicle also reports the spike of oil money flowing into McSame’s campaign after he flip-flopped on drilling.
Big Oil got their man.

The new cry of the oil wildcatters: “Thar’s oil in them there bills . . .”
Wildcatting for oil in McCain’s office is so much more pleasant. You can wear comfortable clothes, sleep in your own home at night, and don’t have to worry about getting all dirty and such. And the food is better, too.
Wildcatting on K Street is so much more civilized than wildcatting in West Texas, the Arctic tundra, or a drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico.
Fill ‘im up!!
To counter the ‘tire gauge’ visual aide that the Repukes are brandishing, Obama could use a bar graph with a short oil platform, tall tire gauge.
The dumbing down of America is paying off.
That John McCain, he sure is slick, ain’t he?!
It started with Reagan.
Hmmm, wouldn’t it be too funny if they tie Gotti to Jacky boy and the little shooting in FL!!!
NEW YORK – ‘John A. “Junior” Gotti has been arrested on charges linking him to three New York murders, a law enforcement official said Tuesday.
‘Gotti, 44, was arrested by the FBI at his Long Island home. Federal authorities in Tampa, Fla., are expected to announce a racketeering indictment, charging Gotti with murder conspiracy in connection with killings in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to the official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement had not yet been made.’

Somehow, the act of changing positions has become the worst thing that a politician can do. As mentioned above, McCain changed his position because he was bought off by oil money. Obama has changed his position on the Strategic Oil Reserve because of high gas prices. McCain’s change is dishonest while Obama’s shows leadership in response to today’s situation. They both changed, but the changes are not equivalent.
A leader who does not change is what we have now in Bush/Cheney. Does anyone really want another like that?
The Rs have so warped the political dialogue, it’s now impossible to change or not to change.
Was that a setup for simple answers to simple questions?
Somewhat OT
Tropical Storm Edouard is onshore and will not do any damage to the Houston area except for 3-5 inches of much-needed rain.
Sad: Ted Kennedy taped an address for the D convention in case he can’t be there in person.
Ron Suskind is going to be on Leonard Lopate show, wnyc.org, noon-2. Don’t know which segment, but I would guess he’ll lead off as his revelations made headlines. Lopate does great interviews & the segment will be a minimum of 20 minutes, so listen up all.
Yes, of course none of us want somebody who shifts with the wind on major principles (see Romney, Mitt), but I’m sick of ideologues trying to fit the round world into square holes. I liked a John Maynard Keynes quote which someone, I think on FDL, mentioned a week or so ago:
“When the facts change, I change my opinion. What do you do?”
Do you hear any reports on his condition? Progress? I think I have not heard anything about him/treatment since his appearance to vote in the Senate. Thanks
There has been a lot of talk (justified) about McCain being in the pocket of big oil but little about his lies regarding nuclear power and his desire to build 45 nuclear plants. Just last week there was an underreported story of a nuclear sub leaking all over the pacific. There have been other problems with USN ships. and then there is the matter of frances safety recordhttp://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,568467,00.html

‘Quid pro quo’ is the very soul of the Republican Party…without it their ideaology falls apart.
Yjay would be a great ad… all Obama’s people would have to do is put together spme clips of Bush saying how much the execs love the plan , with a caption underneath reading “Good for execs, bad for…?”
It’s not a flip-flop based on “facts.” It’s a flip-flop based on crass political/financial calculations.
Out the door…from the previous post, I do conclude this whole topic of introducing/doing “change” is fraught with j’ne sais quoi. Let the chips fall…. ;)
I had meant to refer to Badwater’s comment at 7 and was speaking in general terms, about the outcomes of the “flip flop campaign” against Kerry. I think I agree with eCahn @ 8. Yesterday, on I saw the talking heads on Hardball reach consensus that flip-flopping is now acceptable, but you have to do it first. In their book, McCain was okay, because he changed his stand ASAP (regardless of the reason), whereas Obama was wrong because his shift came second.
Anyway, I wasn’t disagreeing with your point and agree that the proximity of the big oil contributions to McCain’s urgent desire to do something to help commuters should be emphasized.
Good Morning Blue Texan and Firedogs,
had to change up my usual morning routine today and as a result I’ve had about an hour of TV snooze – (59.5 minutes longer than normal)
Here come the Swiftboaters – MSNBC gave Corsi at least 10 concern troll minutes where Newsdesk Barbie questioned the veracity of his crap – with the requisite “response” from DNC Spokeswoman – who of course failed to call Barbie out for having him on in the first place – and dismissed it all as “silly”.
the telling moment came when ol Barbie was clearly frustrated with DNC spokeswoman – “But, but aren’t you going to answer these charges ?!?!” 3 or 4 times
Blue Tex – hope the AC is humming along nicely for you and yours.
This spurs a question I would like someone in the press to ask over energy.
There has been absolutely no energy policy that secures Americas future for along time since President Carter articulated his oil independence policy. That since Reagan, energy policy has been like short term (variable rates). With all three branchs of Gov’t control in the hands of one party for the most. That party now wants to reinvent another short term (fix) that leaves America’s national security on energy suspect.
Question;
How does anyone take corrective action and how does the American electorate make effective action on energy policy when we know nothing for sure of the V.P. Cheney’s secret Energy Policy that was set in secret meeting and what we do know of the policy is that Kenneth Lay of ENRON was one of the main policy participants. So how does one take corrective action on an energy policy that is still kept secret from them?
