Yes, you read that right:
The Bush administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 barrels per day by 2030. We use about 20 million barrels per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage by 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone else did, we could reduce demand several percentage points immediately. In other words: Obama is right.
How dare he be right? That- that- smart person!
Hey, McCain! Give me a tire gauge!

800,000 per day??
Does it count that I try to keep the tires on my 30-year old bicycle properly inflated?
Is the GOP trying to turn the tire gauge into the flip-flop or purple-heart-bandaid from 2004? Waving them around at folks in line at Obama rallies makes no sense. To me, the message is: “Don’t save gas! Our oil executive supporters will make less money if you save gas! Don’t properly inflate your tires!” But — they are giving away tire pressure gauges, so the message is quite muddied.
I don’t think Steve Schmidt is as smart as his fans think he is.
Something else. Big Oil companies (and little oil companies) already hold AND HOARD exisitng leases on more oil than is in the gulf. Or so I’m told–i’m a lwyer not a geologist.
But they won’t drill on these leases. If the federal gov’r made the leases “use ‘em or lose ‘em” plenty of oil would be flowing and a lot faster than the offshore drilling which still has to be mapped and parcelled into leases and then sold off.
Yep, oil companies sitting on oil reserves they refuse to drill. This is all just an Enron style manipulations to fianlly get approval for offshore drilling.
It is great political theater b/c they have taken something thta should be a disaster for the GOP at the polls: $4+ pergallon at the pump during the adminsitration of two, count ‘em two oil men–and they have Obama on the ropes with it!!!!
he’s waffling on the offshore drilling thingy! The GOP brought us $4 gasm, and Obama is the oe in trouble on the issue. Arrgghhh!
But this story gave Sean Hannity so much for venting and saying his ridiculous comments…that’s to say, all the things he likes to ridicule. What a jerk. He is badgering Obama to come on his show (and why would he?) and having a huge chortle over the tire gage. Let’s just gag the guy.
So, once again I wonder::::: what when on during Cheney’s secret meetings with energy company execs?
Is offshore drilling and Anwar what he promised them? And in exhcnage for what?
One of the strangest aspects of the ‘energy crsis’ of the seventies was it’s affect upon turn-signals.
Remember, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t tuna fish.
Proper inflation is desirable for all tires; egos, however, are too often over-inflated, especially amongst the political class …
;~D
A seat on the board of Exxon/Mobil?
God forbid someone should point out the obvious.
It helps the reduce the friction of Rolling Resistance.
Don’t say I never learned ya nothing.
But handing out tire gauges makes great TV and gives the pundits easy talking points. Thats what’s important.
Pressure
Obama should hand out dipsticks.
Why do Repubs always think of silly things to do? They appear to be so childish and think they are just precious. A 10 year old could come up with something better than this.
McCain would call that a personal insult
I haven’t give you a round of applause for quite awhile and you have been hitting them out of the park. This one is especially good. / (hands clapping)
When they hand ya one of those Repub paid for tire gauges say, Thanks! Obama was right!
Then giggle and walk away.
whodunnit? this has been another episode of PSI
What do you think the mental age of the typical repub voter is?
I think he told them that Bushco was going to go into Afghanistan because of the oil pipeline Unocal deal at the time, and that next would be Iraq to get the oil there, and ultimately Iran for the final prize, and that they would all profit..Remember, there were the oil well maps from those meetings..and I think he told them the Admin. was going to “make sure” it happened no matter what it took….and…I think he told them that if oil prices are high..the people can be easily pressured into allowing more drilling and more money and more profit and more Halliburton profits and on and on and on…
Something like this must be why they won’t release any of the documents relating to our (the People’s) energy policy meetings…
They won’t give us our documents. They work for us! Arrest them for treason.
merci!
McSame is giving away tire gauges? His overinflated campaign could do worse.
I think Obama should hand out tire gauges, with the words “Bush says I’m Correct” emblazoned on them
At least in heavy Red state areas.
In Blue state areas, it can say, “Driving to protect the environment” or some such.
.
um – huh? I’m lurking at work (shhh not supposed to post at work)– but I have to ask what you’re referrinig to?
I thought they were selling those tire gauges for a $25 donation to their campaign.
I was wondering if anyone read this at TPM:
Someone should tell Obama this is what happens when you race your opponent to the center while most of the electorate is moving more and more to the left. Looks like they’ve passed him along the road!
Hey, punaise! I’m really not supposed to do spit takes at work!
When it comes to high hysteresis, ’tis you and Busted, punaise, who have the lowest rolling resistance.
You both win gold medals where ever the ‘rubber meets the road’.
I had barely recovered from Busted’s remark, when you pulled out yours.
You’re both more than oil right.
Dipstick lapel pins!!!
Maybe blue lugnuts so we can offer to keep the wheels from falling off the Straight Talk Express.
Change GOP to AHP (Animal House Party)
Dude, inflating tires shows you are a wimpy effete cowardly elitist. Or are you afraid to crash into stuff when one of them blows out? Dude, the AHP likes crashing into stuff and causing creative destruction all over. It is how they produce results! Only simpy elitists are afraid of that.
And dude! If you don’t put oil in the car, that will save oil too! heh-heh-heh! And eventually, it will reduce miles driven dramatically! Almost vernight. (Actually, quicker than overnight.)
I hope Obama doesn’t menion its a good idea to keep oil in the crankcase, otherwise the GOP will make fun of that. Maybe they will send out oil cans.
Let’s not put brake fluid in the car either. Probably some oil in that. Lose the brake fulit, that will increase rolling stops, which will conserve fuel.

Is not now clear that MY *cough* brilliant *cough* response to Ms. CH Smith’s request for song titles to summarize the McCain campaing should be sweeping the country already?
“InSane in the Meme-Brain” by Hypeless Shills.
But it ain’t sweeping the country, not that I can see. Is there no justice in this world?
LHP,
They are refusing to drill because the oil believed to lie under those leases are assets under their accounting systems. The problem is that they don’t really know how much oil is really under their leaseholds, and neither does anyone else.
If they start producing from the leaseholds, then there is a much better handle on the value of the assets. I’m wondering if they haven’t played with the estimated amounts of recoverable crude to monkey with their valuations.
Not that any good Amerkin Comp’ny would ever do anything like that. Other than Enron, Arthur Anderson, Bear Stearns, Freddie and Fannie Mae…
BC
Well, many folks just seemed to stop using turn signals for some ‘reason’, I guess they hadn’t the ‘energy’.
Remember, this was in the days before ‘road rage’ was recognized, so things were more passive-aggressive in those faraway daze …
Who remembers ‘malicious compliance’?
Jane has the funniest post upstairs…
I’d better quit while I’m ahead… :~)
Thought I’d bring this gem over from ThinkProgress:
“Sen. Barack Obama responds: “Now two points, one, they know they’re lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they’re making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant.”
Oh, and Jane’s upstairs with our favorite Senator on the shitter.
I have heard the same thing. The only genuine plank in the Republican platform since 1981 has been deregulation. The tide may be starting to turn but they’ll get in as many licks as possible while they can.
The current off-shore drilling proposals also serve the purpose of making it appear McCain cares about us regular folks, as he and his $500 loafers fly around the country on his wife’s jet.
If I were Obama, i would pivot turn and attack with those tire guages.
“McSame want to get you a mesely 200,000 by drilling in the water where we catch our fish to eat. But with tise handy dnady little device YOU can save over 800,000″
“Poor McSame, all he knows how to do is, like Bush, give you more years of playing the fear card”
Or something similarly mocking.
McSame has to be mocked for being a guy with no new ideas.
Yep, but the same could happen with the offshore oil. None of this willhelp at the pump
Drive by …
There’s also this
That’s 1.6 MILLION barrels of refined gas per day
Not crude oil. Not contracts. 1.6 MILLION barrels of refined gas per day; exported out of this country
Wow, now that’s a smackdown. Nice job
Yup.
Yeah — I just saw that on CBS news tonight.
Excellent!
That’s a lot of potential weed whackers out of business.
I wonder what they got per gallon for that.
Fuckers.
“It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant.”
Now maybe Nancy can say the same thing about the morons and their idiotic “energy sit-in” in the House.
Ain’t holdin’ my breath, though.
Plus Katie’s news that Cheney will probably miss the Repub convention…because, you know, he has to be out of the country. Other things to do, I guess.
4% (0.04) of 20 billion barrels per day = 800,000 barrels per day
ANSWER: yes
‘being right sounds pretty darn uppity to me – I’d rather vote for an ignoramus like mccain, like bush than some uppity smart person.’
by, (Simulated) republican voter.
