In Evan’s defense, having been an acquaintance since college, I think he has been as liberal as he felt Indiana would have tolerated. As vice president, you might find he would strike out more on the left edge of the mainstream on his assigned issues, as did Al Gore and John Edwards when they moved to the national stage. His father’s loss in 1980 may have moved him toward the dlc, but he also is very intelligent and chooses his words carefully “the soul of a vice president”, in the words of a friend of mine, and perhaps can be trained to loosen up, as Al did, on a national campaign. Don’t forget the family commitment to civil rights and women’s rights, Birch Evan Bayh senior was a pioneer coach in women’s sports, Birch Evan Bayh, Jr. was a great senator and the father of the Equal Rights Amendment and Title IX. (He also was the candidate I traveled nationally to work for in Iowa and New Hampshire and he has an interesting tie to the Kennedys, having pulled Teddy from a burning plane, and I can visualize a Teddy video intro of Evan Bayh at the convention.)And Evan (Birch Evan Bayh III) was a staunch supporter of the most serious female presidential candidate ever. I have always been far more liberal and have tsk tsk’ed him many times over the years. I’m just saying don’t underestimate or oversimplify Evan Bayh.

I don’t know much about Bayh but Lyndon Johnson’s insecurities cost many people their lives. Same is true for George Bush. That’s a problem with the presidency. Inferiority feelings inspire people to “prove” themselves and what greater proof is there than the presidency? Obama, wanting to be president from kindergarten, suffers the same affliction, but he may be smart enough to keep it in check. I know. When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be president too.

I agree. If it’s Bayh it will certainly send a signal that the DLC is still in control and Obama is just another Washington pol.

I hadn’t thought much about Bayh, but strategically he makes a lot of sense. He locks in Ohio, makes Indiana more than competitive. That’s enough to win the election on its own. Don’t forget the big prize here. In the degree that it frees up time to campaign in Texas, VA, and the seizable mountain states, his nomination helps Obama crush the thugs.

Like everyone else here I would prefer a more liberal candidate like Gore or Edwards. I originally thought that Richardson would be the sensible pick, however, because he brings in Hispanic votes. But Obama seems to be doing well enough there on his own.

The main prize is the presidency. Who remember’s FDRs VP’s, other than Truman, who was called in for exactly the same reason as Bayh might be. The only one who has left a mark in histors the one (I forget his name) who said the office isn’t worth a warm bucket of spit.

It isn’t and it shouldn’t be. We’ve had enough of this surrogate presidency of Cheney, who ties up DC traffic with his motorcade everytime he has to go out to take a pee.

Bayh is beter than Lyndon Johnson. Kennedy purportedly hated Johnson, but he needed him on the ticket to win. It was expected to be close. It was and Lyndon Johnson on the ticket did what it was supposed to do. Without him Kennedy most likely would have lost. Obama wants to win and he feels he needs someone like Bayh to overcome the race obstacle. He is probably right.

You won’t have someone you want to vote for with the present system. I don’t know how long it will take for large numbers of people to acknowledge the system is irreparably broken. It is a difficult conclusion to reach, but some day, after multiple disappointments, it will be reached.

are all taken - there are more, these are the ones I checked. (How about this one - http://www.obamanader08.com/ ?)

Second, you don’t need permission or cooperation to forward your web site to a third party.
