Talk about finding the right punk for a dirty job.
Barack Obama’s presidential campaign agreed to three debates against rival John McCain this fall and announced that Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) will handle the Illinois senator’s negotiations.
I wonder who McCain will send to negotiate with Rahm? Senator Ted "NO!" Stevens is kinda busy with his primary election and seven federal indictments, but maybe this guy has some spare time?

Does Rahm fight Republicans? I thought he only fought Democrats.
Morning Teddy!
Good morning Teddy and Pacha. Thanks for the post Teddy.
I do not believe rom has the best interest of our party or the progressive movement, I am not happy he is the person negotiating the debates
I also have a problem with only three debates, obama has a huge edge in debates and should play that decisison by ear
Does McCain actully do debates?
I thought he only did ‘town halls’ with questions and attendees both prescreened.
I think he beleives he has no choice, he believes he is running from behind
those from behind have to insist on debates, those running ahead usually avoid them
Hmmm…it’ll be interesting to see if Rahm will actually be USEFUL for a change.
Well, the attendees were not prescreened here in Wisconsin when he stopped by. Even a couple of the questions were not ones I’m sure he wanted asked, but that’s still not stopping the train wreck from coming to a conclusion in slow motion.
Betcha McSame will be wearing a radio receiver like Georgie did…only this time they’ll do a better job hiding it.
What do you mean he’s not useful? Think of all the legislation the House passed, without him, we wouldn’t have all the stuff Bush wanted enacted into law!
/snark
Rahm gets a lot of shots from the left, and many deserved. But my impression is that he is a very tough, fierce opponent. I’d rather him on my side than agin’ me.
you had me laughing there for a minute… but then i realized the joke could might be only too true.
Top of the mornin’ to allll the pups.
Teddy, thank you for this. Rahm frankly, has always deeply concerned me. As in he “worries” me. i.e. he’s SCARY. And his ambition knows no limits. He’s a “no matter WHAT it takes, me me me…..” kinda guy.
I have never trusted him. And was incredulous when Pelosi was breathing hard, placing him front and center in press’s.
Why can’t congress critters see this stuff like we do? How is it he’s constantly striving for and making it to new heights???
or,
put another way,
What the hell is wrong with those people???!
in all seriousness… i wish the LOWV or some other nonpartisan organization was running the debates instead of the candidates.
Anyone catch Meat the Press? Abominal. Brokaw let Lieberman go on and on and on and on while Kerry waits patiently in deference to his “esteemed” colleague of that exclusive private club in which they are members. The corporate media is truly a farce but then that’s all most Americans know. Is it any wonder this country is in such a state of ignorance?
My guess is that the rnc views the League of Women Voters as “quaint”
McCane should just be done with it and send Cheney.
OT question: are they still working on the code for this page? It refreshes funny, and it doesn’t have the new message alert that used to pop up after a minute or two.
Anyone catch Meat the Press?
watching now. Liarman says that the Repub ads are funny.
Amazing how Repubs always have to explain their ‘jokes’, innit?
More like considers them frauds.
Lieberman is a farce! My feed is not in sync with the soundtrack so he even comes across as funnier.
Hopefully, the “negotiations” will address the moderation issue. We certainly don’t need any of the corporate media asking the questions. They’d be handing a sprinkle covered donut to McSFB before each question. If the campaigns do agree to corporate media moderation we should be dumping on the campaigns from the minute the announcement is made. No slack, take no prisoners kind of dumping. Something I’d have to put my evil, wicked, mean and nasty suit on for.
apparently so does the dnc :(
Maybe Luke Russert moderate one and he could use a dry eraser board as McCain’s teleprompter
Lot of work being done in the background. Some features have been turned off. Patience, grasshopper.
Edit is my friend…
More like the League considers the debates frauds.
whomever mccain sends is going to be coming straight from meetings with karl rove, so it kinda doesn’t matter who the delivery boy is going to be.
i’ll know the candidates are actually interested in maximizing the debates’ content and usefulness to the citizenry when they have someone like amy goodman moderate. let’s just say i’m not holding my breath.
didn’t know you did “evil, wicked, mean and nasty” – but for some reason i think they’d better watch out if you do!
and that linguistics guy, whose name is escaping me right now.
Well Chris Matthews’ show was a McCain lovefest; Matthews & Co. all atingle for McCain.
Matthews:
McCain’s such a Romantic
McCain’s coming into the Presidency to be the greatest President ever.
just shoot me now.
the emmanuel brothers were on charlie rose not too long ago, highly competitive-acheivement oriented. i don’t think he wants to be responsible for obama losing the debate…so, in this case, i don’t think he’s going to let that happen. we’ll see.
like someone said, rather have him on my side.
and hi jayt–waving three miles from the indiana border!
Geez. McCane is claiming that Obama forgot Latin America. The new ad is on Spanish speaking stations.
good point. from wikipedia:
my bold.
New message alert has been dead for weeks. Reply works sporadically. I think the squirrels’ chow has fermented…
Obama lose the debate? dmac, that’s impossible. I could win a debate with McCane.
Kerry looks like he’s wanting to plant a serious left hook to the cranial area of Senator Whinerman on MTP.
I empathize.
I thought that was the situation. Thanks for the info.
The corporate media adored GWB in 2000 and lionized him in 2004. The corporate media has made it’s decision and they are going for McSame. They dare not speak a negative word about their man. When the media wants something they are sure to get it. Unfortunately a McCain presidency will be the downfall of the U.S.. Americans are played like puppets by the Republican Party and their allies in the corporate media.
I had to use the mute button a lot. Lieberman is a lying rude, arrogant a** and Kerry should have whacked him or least said “joe, when did you become so rude”
MTP — Patrician Kerry lets Lieberman and Brokaw run rings around him? I watched snatches of two exchanges. Couldn’t stand it. Turned to Snuffy and Pelosi instead.
Sheesh, can’t the Dems come up with a strong spokesman to smack down the bs, and call it bs while they’re at it? That little worm, Prunes Lieberman gets carte blanche to reinforce the LIE that Obama played the race card.
Brokaw makes no mention of the McCain website pic of Obama on a dollar bill that they were using a month ago, but then while I was listening, neither did Kerry.
So it’s “out there” and it’ll be used again and again before November. Count on it.
Spare me the Coaster patricians. Give me a rough edged blunt guy like the Montana governor anytime.
Lieberman, like all Republicans, is indeed rude but then Kerry shows that like nearly all Democrats they are polite to a fault with Republicans. They always come to a knive fight armed with a wet noodle.
rofl
I could win a debate with McCane.
yeah, but I bet you’d resort to some nasty underhanded tactics – like using *facts*. *g*
question – if (whomever) is debating McLame gets him mad enough so that he walks off the stage, is that a KO (knockout) or a TKO (technical knock-out)?
note to self – in the future, keep in mind that there are not so many boxing afficianado’s at this foul-mouthed-fem-blog…
The Dems really need to push spokespeople who will aggressively demolish the innuendo, propaganda and out right lies of the Republicans. They need a fighter who isn’t affraid to say what needs to be said. Republicans are liars and a threat to the nation.
lol, I thought you said:
“yeah, but I bet you’d resort to some nasty underhanded tactics – like using *farts*. *g*”
Yes, he does. I wish, though, he’d said, “I disagree with Wes Clark. Obviously flying a plane and being a POW are second only to running a bobsled and playing the harpsichord in terms of useful training for the Presidency.”
lol, I thought you said:
“yeah, but I bet you’d resort to some nasty underhanded tactics – like using *farts*. *g*”
maybe a strategy for the pre-debate ‘green-room’?
And here I was thinking that KO only stood for Keith Olbermann! I think a walk-off would be a TKO. In order for Obama to score a KO there would have to be a titanic temper tantrum on stage, with the moderator having to go to commercial to “spare the people” the spectacle. Please pass the popcorn…
lol.
and that was NOT Daschle on Fox News this morning.
Hi. Pach, long time no see. You are
absolutely right. A`ram has always
been the lousiest troll I have ever
read anywhere.
This dude is an undercover Repug.
Good Morning Teddy and Firedogs,
well Teddy you have me thinking. even knowing “the brand” is in abject disarray, so far, all McScum has is his own people – he has Party money, but outside of his lobbyist cadre, he has no Party muscle – guess it will change after the Convention – but what ever happened to that vaunted Republics ‘discipline’ ?!?!?
and loo hoo, i tried to send email to the address you gave, about pittsburgh, but didn’t work i guess..

take care.
mornin’ Elliot,
please don’t mention that name . . .am so afraid we’re gonna wind up with Vice President Gummy Bear X~(
Heh.
Morning backatcha
I have no particular choice for VP but Daschle’s is a definite no for me.
Maybe McCain will send the AP’s Ron Fournier:
Two headlines and subs for campaign-related AP stories today:
and
I have feeling that Obama’s choice won’t be my choice. Don’t ask me why I feel this way./snark
Tom Brokaw is channeling Rush Limbaugh today.
-G
oh I know that about you – just touchy here. and hoping that ego and vanity will be satisfied with an “unofficial chief advisor” role – blerrgh
Mrs. Greenspan on MTP – “Lieberman has left his leftist party…”
transparency indeed. (”not that that’s a bad thing”)
and if Evan Bayh gets the Dem V.P. bid my blood pressure med’s will probably need to quadruple. If anyone thinks Indiana’s last V.P. candidate was bad (Mssr Quayle) – you ain’t seen nothing yet…
In the “what would you bring to a gun fight?” series, you can put Bayh down as a “candy and flowers” guy.
Just caught the end of Face the Nation. Struck by how Bob Schiefer is looking more and more like Barbara Bush. Uncanny. Other than that it was all David Brooks talking about how the entire campaign is about Obama. Nothing about failed Republican governance, the sorry economy, the bankrupt conservative philosophy, just about how no one really knows Obama.
Wouldn’t it be fun if Obama showed up at one of McCane’s little pep rallies unannounced?
Just thank your lucky stars they haven’t gotten around to inviting Maureen Dowd to offer her “wisdom” on one of these panels.
Ya know….. just realized that when I was in Europe I didn’t yell at the TeeVee once…… CNN International had really great news coverage….
Today is the first Sunday to watch the talking heads and that last 7 minutes… grrr
I hope the Republicans jump all over that and the Democrats set the bar really low by the line that Obama isn’t a good debater and is unlikely to show up well against McCain. I’m tired of Republicans having the low bar, that if they don’t drool, they win.
I want Dick Greggory out there. I met him in 1967. He was clean, fair, tough then and hasn’t changed a bit. I’ll
listen and believe anything he says. NI**ER.
[Mod Note; Commented edited by mod. Terms like the one used trigger FDL’s automatic filters.]
She’ll be there all in due time. The corporate media is nothing more than the gas bag circuit for rich celebrity, egotists that want nothing more than to preserve the status quo.
Why is it that nobody is talking about Tony Gonzalez as McSame’s VP.
They say McSame is looking for some kind of kindred spirit. It could be the CRS administration.
good point – and not even untrue. Obama is *not* a great debater. By the end of the 22 (or whatever) D debates, the best one could say was that Obama wasn’t getting trounced by HRC as badly as he was initially.
I cannot believe anyone thinks mccain will out perform obama, from everything I can see of late he is an aging dim wit
Good one, dmac!
What are they talking about on Meet the Press today? Obama backing down on offshore drilling. This could be a problem. Anytime he has to talk about anything of nuance he can’t sell it. He sounds like a physics prof. People’s eyes glace over. He needs to use metaphors and narrative he uses in his big speeches.
He needs the quick tongue of a Kennedy or a Roosevelt.
And GWB was a raging moron yet the American public reelected him in 2004.
The republicans will need to give McCane an earpiece like they did W, but he’ll still screw it up. The guy’s lost it completely.
Yes, I think that’s true, but MSM kept saying Obama couldn’t debate well during the primary against HRC. They never mentioned how bad McCain was. Now they want to emphasize the fact that Obama won’t take McCain up on town meetings or debates. It might work with some of the “low info voters” if the Obama camp acts reluctant to debate McCain. I guess it really doesn’t matter though, because it’s how the MSM portrays the debates afterwards that counts, rather than what actually took place.
McCain has no idea how to run a real competitive race….. since he was first elected to congress he just slid through the race with barely putting in any effort…… up until 2004 the AZ Democratic party finally had a full time office and staff……
McBush has been in office for decades has NEVER had to fight for that office and has no clue how…… he thinks he is entitled and deserves to be President…… He sold his soul to BushCo didn’t he?
How DARE you insult John McCain?
-G
P.S. I think the Obama camp should now start saying that it is a bit creepy that John McCain appears to be obsessed with Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton. Obsessed, I say and it’s creepy.
Actually Obama didn’t change his opinion on off shore drilling…. the Media reported his statement incorrectly…… let me look but I think it was on TPM election central that had the actual quote which NEVER said he changed his stand on drilling…… Damn F*ching media changing the actual quote…
Oh, dear. Oh, dear…It’s upsetting on a Sunday morning to consider what that says about the American public. :(
Has the Schief-miester started wearing blue dresses and pearls?
-G
Hmmm. My wife just said that George Will said he thinks Obama voters are being seriously under reflected in the polls and he thinks it’s going to be a blowout. For once, I hope he’s right.
hey moderator: Dick Gregory wrote a book in the 60’s with the title “NI**ER”—He then quoted that anytime
you heard that word, ” people were talking about my book.” I use that term with absolute respect in regard to DICK GREGORY.
[Mod Note; Commented edited by mod. Terms like the one used trigger FDL’s automatic filters.]
Obama needs to put McCain on the defensive. Up until know it’s been Obama on the defensive. Americans don’t do nuance and the kumbaya approach is going to wear very thin when you are dealing with Machiavellians. This scenario will lead to a McCain presidency.
I would have thought he was right before my friends daughter had her wedding where even though the majority were democrats, everyone was considering mccain
translation, they were all bigots and wouldn’t admit it but there it is
but they didn’t re-elect him, diebold selected him not america
You mean like bringing a butterfly net to a gun fight?
Rahm is Repug lite so I have very little faith in his ability to structure the debates to Obama’s strengths.
I’m surprised the Democrats would even bring a butterfly net.
John McCain, he’s quite the celebrity.
-G
Agreed. And as far as the false claim about why Obama didn’t visit the injured soldiers in Germany, Obama should have reminded everyone that the reason they were injured was that the republicans concocted a war. And thrown in Walter Reed for good measure.
Obama better start fighting back.
Ian’s upstairs
Reality Be Damned, Here Comes Offshore Drilling
Ha. I was looking for a metaphor for the kumbaya “tool”.
Anybody see the Charlie Rose interview with Tim Kaine last week? At the time the buzz started about Kaine as a possible VP choice I hadn’t heard much about him. When I learned that he is a “social conservative” it set off some alarms. After watching the interview I was left with a mostly favorable impression. Regardless of whether he gets the nod he is a top notch Obama surrogate, although I haven’t seen him in a confrontational situation. The biggest challenge in a Charlie Rose interview is the total absence of pertinent follow-up questions. It would have been interesting to see Kaine face off with Lieberman on MTP instead of Kerry.
OT.
I haven’t been able to hang around much lately, but I’ve noticed the “(show text)” thingy doesn’t seem to work for me anymore, nor do I get the ‘new comments’ or ‘new post’ notices.
I understand there are updates to FDL coming and was wondering if those features are on hold during the change over.
Or is it just me?
It’s really hard for me to understand people who call themselves Democrats can think that way. Living in Texas, I’m familiar with the bigotry, but they call themselves Republicans, conservatives, or independents. It takes some courage to call yourself a Democrat in the first place around here. The PUMA thing, if that’s what it is, is beyond me.
Whoo HOO!! It will be if the kids vote, and they’re not polled proportionately on their cell phones.
And the corporate media is repeating that the “race” is neck and neck to set the stages for yet another theft by the Republicans. At some point in time Americans will have to wake up to the fact that elections have been compromised and are a fraud. An American version of elections in totallitarian states. Perhaps by 2024 Republicans will recieve 95% of the “popular vote.”
The fact that the Obama camp bailed on Gen. Clark after Clark’s very mild attack on McAngry doesn’t bode well.
Obama should have hoisted Clark on his shoulders and paraded him about like a champ.
Instead, he seems to have fallen back into response mode. He aint going to win on the defense.
-G
Oh, there will be a prize for Rahm if Obama wins. You bet Rahm will do his best for Obama.

Siri, in all seriousness, do you think Rahm is worse than Steney? Jus’ wonderin’, because I think Steney’s got his knife out for Pelosi’s job. It occurred to me that that might be one reason she’s so willing to do the Blue Dogs’ bidding. [competing for their votes]
Your thoughts?
Gag: I wish you had put a warning on the picture…may offend some people.
