The NYTimes, profiling trolls.
In the days after the Megan Meier story became public, Lori Drew and her family found themselves in the trolls’ crosshairs. Their personal information — e-mail addresses, satellite images of their home, phone numbers — spread across the Internet. One of the numbers led to a voice-mail greeting with the gleeful words “I did it for the lulz.” Anonymous malefactors made death threats and hurled a brick through the kitchen window. Then came the Megan Had It Coming blog. Supposedly written by one of Megan’s classmates, the blog called Megan a “drama queen,” so unstable that Drew could not be blamed for her death. “Killing yourself over a MySpace boy? Come on!!! I mean yeah your fat so you have to take what you can get but still nobody should kill themselves over it.” In the third post the author revealed herself as Lori Drew.
This post received more than 3,600 comments. Fox and CNN debated its authenticity. But the Drew identity was another mask. In fact, Megan Had It Coming was another Jason Fortuny experiment. He, not Lori Drew, Fortuny told me, was the blog’s author. After watching him log onto the site and add a post, I believed him. The blog was intended, he says, to question the public’s hunger for remorse and to challenge the enforceability of cyberharassment laws like the one passed by Megan’s town after her death.
Kennedy had spent years on the bench as a juvenile and family-court judge, during which time he had developed a strong interest in aiding abused children. In the early 1980s he had helped to start the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama, and he later established the Corporate Foundation for Children, a private, nonprofit organization. At the time of the race he had just served a term as president of the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect. One of Rove’s signature tactics is to attack an opponent on the very front that seems unassailable. Kennedy was no exception.
Some of Kennedy’s campaign commercials touted his volunteer work, including one that showed him holding hands with children. "We were trying to counter the positives from that ad," a former Rove staffer told me, explaining that some within the See camp initiated a whisper campaign that Kennedy was a pedophile…. "[Kennedy] is a small, well-groomed, well-educated family man, and what they tried to do was make him look like a homosexual pedophile. That was really, really hard to take."

Thers!
Aloha, Thers!
The repiglicans can’t possibly win by playing fair.
Bon soir, mes amis.
trolls are crunchy but leave a nasty aftertaste
i’m pushing the red button and having all the mods strap into their safety harnesses. lurk, make sure all the mods are wearing their nomex and kelvar safety suits.
ok, trolls, we are ready. in the immortal words of a well known fool… bring. it. on.
That’s right. Encourage them to show themselves – you take flank, Suzanne.
Oh, come now. My posts never cause trouble.
Incidentally, this:
It’s the Republican Seven Dwarfs.
lurk, can you believe it – he said that with a totally straight face?
Sick. Karl Rove needs to be put where known criminals live. I trust that the Obama campaign is prepared, though.
aint no forking way a/c is forking snow white thers.
book salon is book salon and off topic is off topic ct. you know that.
I am more convinced than ever that this isn’t Thers, but an agent provocateur. Watch your back!
Do you suppose they will accuse Obama of having a white child?
Btw, this is utter BS…
Heh, but was it off topic, Ma Cheri…? *g*
How do you know he had a straight face? I sensed a bit of a mischievous wink.
I am as pure as the driven snow.
Burp.
NYT teaser for MoDo’s Sunday moment of drivel, he’s Mr. Darcy, chicklit hero…
She, on the other hand, is the bewitching Margaret Hamilton, shrieking by on her broom.
No Frank Rich this Sunday. No reason to go there…..
No, it’s me.
(Looks despondently at wreckage of living room caused by children.)
Sigh. It’s me….
Thers!
hard to see with this dayam hockey mask thingie i’m wearing… trolls have been known to carry viruses on their nasty claws
Ha!
Right…! We believe ya, with no hesitation…! ;-)
How so?
I see you’re having the same probs with the reply…!
Very odd…
works for me in FF
i hear it is intermittent for those using IE
Sometimes it takes a double click to ensure it takes…!
I’m in an earlier FF mode, Suz!
Works for me too, but replying to someone for whom it’s not working is probably the issue. If that makes sense.
As to the reply issue, try this:
Wait until the page loads completely after a refresh. If the “reply” bar does not appear right away, wait a beat and single-click it again.
ie, double click it, eh? ;-)
This is sort of troll related, Shannon Brownlee wrote an article in AARP magazine, saying we conduct too many medical tests in this country and that is why healthcare costs so much. It turns out, she works for a Think Tank and may be biased.
McCain’s trolls apparently are still not very computer or internet savvy. I read someplace that they tried to scrub an old page on McCain’s caompaign site that described McCain as a ‘celebrity’ politician.
I saw the page from a cache file on a blog. Which one? Sadly No!, or thinkprogress?
So …. has everyone had an opportunity to stop by the new blog that Al the Spook, NDFG and I started? Spook And Muffin’s Relaxed Politics We have a beach house, a beach, and our very own ocean.

Hiya All,
Dropping in here on my vaca in lovely Southeast PA. I’m commenting on last night’s Late Late Nite — I do miss some of regular firepups. Am I one of them?
Judging from the number of uninsured and under-insured people in this country, I would think it would be in balance.
So if we manage to get universal health care in the US, Ms. Brownlee will really be howling.
“Hey, fewer tests, and more guessing, please!”
Funny, since modern medicine is reliant upon medical tests… I heard this drug rep telling an Opthamalogist that they test their product in Europe because the testing criteria is much lower… Wtf is that…?
Thers-
I just read through the entire NYT piece you linked. And, it took a strong stomach. When people say “troll” here at FDL, where I first learned the term, FDL trolls of past are really, like, harmless creatures compared to those profiled in the NYT article.
snip: ~~I first met Weev in an online chat room that I visited while staying at Fortuny’s house. “I hack, I ruin, I make piles of money,” he boasted. “I make people afraid for their lives.” On the phone that night, Weev displayed a misanthropy far harsher than Fortuny’s. “Trolling is basically Internet eugenics,” he said, his voice pitching up like a jet engine on the runway. “I want everyone off the Internet. Bloggers are filth. They need to be destroyed. Blogging gives the illusion of participation to a bunch of retards. . . . We need to put these people in the oven!”~~
Pretty sickening stuff.
yes, christine e, you are a regular and are missed when you are not here
I’ll be sure to check it out!
Thanks, Suzanne!
I love to be here.
Heh, the FDL Mods are the bestest… Sometimes to a fault… Hugh and I were heavily moderated for dissing Nancy Pelosi…! 8~)
Thanks!
Yeah, it’s gross. But when I read it, I thought, “but that is how the GOP wins elections!”
In politics, what that freak does gets applause, not revulsion.
Hey Chris!
Tell us what’s in Southeast PA – I don’t know a thing about it.
The movieola the McCain campaign plays at the beginning of his “rallies” which dwells entirely on his POW experience (presumably so McCain doesn’t need to mention it, as he never, ever does when he campaigns) has two fun moments: one of his fellow POWs refers to John as a “celebrity;” and Roberta “Moms” McCain talks about her telephone calls to Carol (the later-abandoned long-waiting wife) when Johnnie’s plane went down.
Can’t wait to see how long it takes for those to be clipped from here.
Nice post, Thers!
Good luck, mods!
Bravissimo! A tour de force by the snark maestro.
Test.
She wrote a book on the same topic, Overtreated.
Why would AARP, let her write in their magazine?
I agree with Suzanne
Hi, Christine!
It worked on my end Loo Hoo.
Uh oh, I think Hugh and I are being dissed…!
All’s well. Better go read the NYT piece.
It’s one reason for high healthcare costs, yes. US doctors do order way more tests than other country’s doctors.
ct and hugh are regulars and are missed when they are not here too
Doubt that, CT!
Hey Newt,
I have lots of family here in West Chester, Chadds Ford, and up in Montgomery County, that we spend weeks here each summer. Tonight, we watched fireworks and a storm from a great view. At dark, we walked the grass airport runway at my in-laws and mourned the giving away of his airplane.
Oh, the business about ordering tests when they own a portion on the machinery the tests are being done on. Saw that. They get more money for each test run.
There must be a better way. (See Kaiser Permanente)
I think that is what Rethuglican political ops do for recreation.
T’anks, and to Teddy.
Do you miss me even though I am an irregular?
Yes, but she estimates that 24% of all healthcare costs are unnecessary.
24%!!
My Endocrinologist charges $350 for 7 to 10 minutes, that’s unnecessary!
Betsy! Who could miss you!!!
Wahhhh! Wahhh! You don’t even notice if I am missing!
My Reply button works…doesn’t it?
i miss you too tex.. you are more than semi – you are the mistress of snack
But, they also get denied at a disproportionate level in their endeavors…!
It is a somewhat contentious issue. There is some evidence indicating that at least some physicians do have their patients take too many tests and that many physicians call for more tests than are perhaps necessary, just to be safe. On the other hand there is no hard evidence on how large an issue this is and what the costs are. Similarly there are no data on whether this “over testing” leads to better medical care or not.
yeap
Well, I didn’t say that right at all. Let me say that I admire you, gosh, just love you and all that you do.
Thanx, Suz! Nice consolation for Hugh’s and my exhortation on Nancy’s woeful performance as Speaker…! *g*
“At dark, we walked the grass airport runway”
do they have chiggers in SE Pennsylvania?
That would explain LGF and Malkin…
too bad that was not the topic of the book salon, ct
Was that in the Book Salon?
The former Governor of Vermont?
A Women’s performance in a leadership role…? *g*
Do you argue with you mechanic, hey, the brakes have not failed yet, so lets go a few thousand more miles. No system is perfect, however she claims 24%, makes her seem like a nut.
Yep. Just about the only thing that would explain then. other than the actual gates of Hell thingee.
OT, but this can’t be a good thing.
We walked the whole runway, and saw lot of bats. And back as well. Dad gave the airplane to a charity this year, at age 87.
Hi Chris and everyone. ;)
no, it was about how hard it is to get women in politics in the us and why – it was not a post bitching about a woman in politics
Well in THAT case …. Snack! baseball cookies
and golf cookies
I agree that seems awfully high. What I have seen on the subject does not seem to have any real hard numbers on costs, etc. Ian seems to have a better handle on this. Maybe he can shed some light on it. Personally, I just do what the doctor tells me. Of course mine does not seem overly test happy.
long may he fly in his memories…and yours
yummy thank you
Hi Margot! I’m not in Ohio tonight. Tomorrow, Philadelphia for lunch, and home to Cleveland by late night.
How. Cool. Is. That!
Dear heavens, no.
Hey Chris, will you go to the Netroots Nation thing next summer? It’s in Pittsburg. I hope to be able to go. Would love to meet you and a whole slew of others.
and why is this not a conspiracy to subvert the government?
RICO/Rove/RNC.
Hee hee. I liked this, actually:
Pretty sensible, when you come right down to it.
judas priest, its gotta be stable to move but its safe?
I’m planning to go, though I can’t imagine that it would be more fun than Austin, right TexB?
But, Suz, we weren’t bitching about women in politics, we were rightfully bitching about Nancy’s woeful performance in acting on her significant, nay historic, role as Speaker… Why did she allow Steny to steamroller Immunity for the telcoms… Delay would’ve squashed it like a bug, if he was so inclined…!
My Dad was a tailgunner, and Mr.CE’s dad was a Hump Pilot. Lots of medals here…
(((CE)))
(((CE’s dad)))
(((bats)))
They are very cute! And thanks TexBesty, you seem like a wonderful person.
Well it is North Dakota after all. Not much there to miss.
The way things look right now, the only way I lose my election is through slime attacks (again) from my opponent. It’s a great year to be a Progressive!
We have to do this. As two women so wanting to go, and as we hate to drive…we have a year to make this work. Trains? Greyhound? Hey Betsy!
Easy to rack up medals from 10,000 ft in the air…! No disrespect intended, but, I’m a ground pounder that has a distinct bias, CE! ;-)
ct, nancy being steamrolled was not what the book was about. it was about how women in politics have the deck stacked against them. it was about how much harder it is to be in politics and be a women.
book salon is to be kept to the subject of the book ct. you wanna file a formal complaint about it?
Did you catch her on Public Radio this week? She kept laying the blame for everything that happened (or didn’t happen) on Harry Reid’s doorstep. I was driving, so I didn’t call in, but I was furious.
Because they ARE “the government.”
Depressing, but true. They are, however, attempting to subvert the constitution, which is a whole different matter.
Heh, where do I file, Suz…! 8~P
Luv ya, tho…! *g*
Sounds somewhat Shooteresque – Subverting themselves…
Frustrating, no…? If Delay was in charge and he didn’t want it, it wouldn’t have even appeared on the CR…!
What state are you running in? What office?
It’s late at night here on the east coast, was that the funniest thing, Chaney shots a guy and the guy apologizes to Cheney.
i’ll send you email off thread with the info, ct.
thank you!
Cannot keep my eyes open. I’m gonna miss the tune toon tonight,…have to catch it in the morning ;(
Night Loo Hoo.
Not according to Our Elite Media.
And on that depressing note, I’m to bed. Night, and thanks as usual to our awesome Mods, who, let it be noted, Rock.
g’nite loohoo
At the time of Whittington’s “apology,” I was tempted to think that up was down. But up was sideways!
g’nite thers
yeah, ’cause the old man probably knew Cheney pretty well and did not want to be renditioned and tortured!
nite loo hoo
nite thers
I’d love to get an email from ya, M’dear…! *g*
I harbor no ill will at’ll… I have no desire to provoke controversy, I’m only a tad miffed that Hugh and I were moderated, I lost three comments, and Hugh lost two IIRC…!
I have to wait 10 minutes at train crossings about once or twice a week, and yet there are no passenger trains through here.
check your inbox ct, already sent
Night Thers.
Wilco! *g*
Perhaps the recipient of Cheney’s ‘attentions felt it would be prudent, under the ‘circumstances’, whatever they were, to um.. ‘dis-arm’ any lingering ‘disaffection’ on the part of Shooter.
But you are right, Sandman, it’s a most-amazing thing, unprecendented, perhaps.
“Gosh, I’m real sorry I stuck my face in your line of fire, there, Chief …”
don’t forget, the old guy cheney shot in the face was a forking lawyer
If he wasn’t on the Bush v Gore team, he’s fair game.
so, perhaps the ”apology” was obtained not by the threat of torture, but by a payoff?
What is that ‘Cable Guy’ quote?
Something along the lines of, “Remember its 98% of lawyers who give the rest a bad name.” Or something to that affect, Suzanne.
I guess we’re fortunate to have so many of the ‘rest’ here at FDL?
;~D
say you are sorry and i won’t eat ya for breakfast
What was it Comey and Mueller were supposed to have said about feeling uncomfortable for their physical safety?
night Thers. night loo hoo. who did i miss?
I am currently noshing on these and thought I would share. Just came into season and bought some at the farmers’ market this morning. Some of the best in the world.
my family… the reason is hiding in plain sight
they make the best pies! and are great just as they are. my first ex’s family was up in three forks and i remember sitting at my former mother in law’s table munching down a big bowl of em. yummy indeed!
If ‘payback’ is hell, what is a ‘payoff’? Probably a ‘good’ intention?
NOTE; The preceding snarks was for porpoises of entertainment, only.
I think that’s the bulk, Tex! ;-)
Yeah.
I’ve heard women in the ER apologizing to their husbands because the man hurt his hand hitting his wife.
will making a complaint do any good? i’m just catching up now… and although i can’t read the comments that were deleted in the book salon, i thought if a guest makes a statement that is false one is expected to call them on it. has that rule changed? or did i just misunderstand it?
I bought two pounds and hope I can make them stretch at least until Tuesday. 8-)
enjoying this, and sorry i missed salon today!
Suz, nahant said he’s bringing a blueberry-peach pie tomorrow…! ;-)
Thanks, Doc! Those look a lot like the fresh cherries we get at the supermarket in KS. I wonder if ours are from Montana?
tis a lush combo i’ve had before – i’m looking forward to it (big big smile)
Good question…! ;-)
Btw, ask him how many times he does cook the chili…! Last nite, he said he was starting the second cooking…!
i figure he will be along shortly to tease us with how great the chili is coming along and that he just took the pie outta the oven and it smells wonderful…
I expect I will have some reporting to do on that subject.
Not sure. I know that they sell them out of state, but I do not know how widely. They average about 3 million pounds a year. Bing cherries (which is the most common variety grown in the Flathead) look pretty much the same everywhere, but local growing conditions determine the taste. 8-p
Okay, CTut and selise, you’ve got my attention.
Obviously I missed another exciting thread.
Anyone willing to share what happened, as they ’see’ it?
Or do I have to try to figure it out?
Think I will toddle off to bed. Going hiking here in the morning. Take care and enjoy the snark and don’t start any fights while I’m gone. ;-)
not wanting to diss CT or Hugh in the slightest, but since the subject is being discussed here, while I may have agreed with the points they were trying to make about the Speaker (those that I saw, anyway), I lurked my way through the entire book salon, and it did appear that the subject of Gov. Kunin’s book and her comments today was to encourage more women to go into politics and to coach them on how to do so with more success, not on how a particular woman in politics may have failed to hold to the ideals some of us might have hoped she would.
and that is all I have to say about that. :)
g’nite dr no pause dick
Oops. Forgot the link. Here it is.
and to try to grab the z…er, first comment, and to post the first Digg!
hi newt. ygm
good night y’all
pain free sleep wishes tex
for shizzle neuro – that’s exactly what he’s gonna do
As I read it, Pelosi’s name came up in the introduction, and in comments. The author, prompted by a comment about Pelosi’s leadership, expressed her opinion that Pelosi had her hands full with her caucus (paraphrasing), and several commenters took that as a signal to pound on the Speaker… In a Book Salon about getting more women to participate in the process.
my one and only complaint was when paul lukasiak wrote, in one of his threads, that i didn’t want to deal with the fact that i have absorbed the misogyny directed at Clinton into my own psyche. but i guess that’s considered ok.
(i also complained that his posts were filled with faulty analysis – but i was offered the opportunity to refute so i guess i can’t complain about that).
‘Xactly, that was the thrust of our gripes…! If one so empowered failed miserably, why should we be so inclined the next time…?
If it’s any consolation, selise, I did appreciate your viewpoints…! *g*
well, i’m only reading it now. but there are two extremely problematic statements that i think should have been refuted:
being a woman doesn’t get her a pass at being a lousy role model for anyone. she might as well have written that phyllis schlafly is a great role model for women.
i agree her problem is not gender. but i wrote this really long two part diary showing that the second part of this statement is, frankly, bullshit.
so, ban all of womenkind from politics, simply because of one woman with whose performance we are not satisfied? surely that is not what you mean!
by that logic, we should ban all Texans from politics, and Cassie would never get to be president!
Hugh, did try tactfully to point that out…! ;-)
to be fair, i once had a comment deleted by the mods (in a much later thread) during a “discussion” with paul. but in that case i deserved it. no complaints about that one.
Just don’t get bannnnnnnned……….
Thanks newtonser, I went back and looked at the Book Salon thread.
I’ll be curious to see what happens now.
Obviously, you are not listening to the happy progressive message.
toon upstairs
but going by past experience how is that against site rules? if a guest says something that we think is wrong – aren’t we supposed to refute it?
and by refute, i mean with evidence and logic not troll like behavior (see i’m even on topic for this thread *g*).
lol. or i’m just too stupid to understand the rules :(
At what juncture do you ascertain that I was opposed to women participating in the political process…? Not once have I ever subscribed to that notion…! Au Contraire, Mon Frere! I believe the more participation of the finer sex is beneficial to society as a whole…! In fact, I asked the fine Gov. about our low ratio as opposed to Iraq’s enforced quotas…!
lol :)
I dunno, just jumping in here late and not really knowing what everyone is talking about.
Me general stance is not to cut Pelosi any slack.
p.s. off the top of my head, here are some women who are (or were) involved in politics in one way or another that i think do, in some way, make for a good role model: frances moore lappe, amy goodman, starhawk, arundhati roy, naomi kleine, susan faludi, marjorie cohn, rosa parks.
i’m sure if i put my mind to it (or if any of us did) we could come up with much better lists. but i doubt any of us would include pelosi on a list of good role models.
Yes, CTUT, this business of leaping to conclusions, before one has looked, is quite fraught.
As far as I can ’see’ you and Hugh were simply pursuing reasonable clarity, and I totally agree with selise that the idea of a ‘pass’ simply on the basis of one’s sex doesn’t cut it.
Nor should skin color play a role. And THAT, really, is NOT a different topic.
Sheila Jackson-Lee!
that was what I viewed as a possible interpretation of the following statement you made at 166:
speaking, I believe, about women in politics, you said,
” If one so empowered failed miserably, why should we be so inclined the next time…?”
If I stated an unfair interpretation of what you said, I apologize. Also please note that I said, surely that was not what you meant? Just looking for confirmation of that, because I did think your wording opened up the possibility of interpreting it that way, and I didn’t think that was really what you meant. No offense intended.
barbara lee!

How far ‘back’ do you want to go, selise?
Hatshepsut!
To the dawn of ‘civilisation’?
The unknown women who invented agriculture!
richards was great – and would love to see edwards someday be a gov, or senator or president.
any woman in politics who you think makes a good role model. and i bet you a nickel that our current speaker would not be on your list.
maxine waters!
Aw, that’s not fair, ‘cuz I’d have to bet against myself.
Nancy Pelosi, whom we all hoped would be a good role model for politicians of BOTH sexes, is, and I just know this will surprize you … are you sitting down …? Pelosi is not on my list.
;~D
Elizabeth Cady Stanton!
Any woman in politics.
Okay, if I can define ‘in’ as ‘involved in’, then I nominate …
selise!!!
And all the foul-mouthed fem bloggers at FDL!
Hey! I like this ‘exercise’.
I’m shocked, shocked! *g*
lol. nite dw,
The thing is, there is a technique for beating down trolls without simply giving up and hoping they will go away.
Most would-be trolls in fact care about something deeply, and their trolling is no more than grade school insults.
Responding to a troll with true insouciance can work. They’re needling for a sore spot. Ignore that and counter-attack their unspoken premises – very often they’ll reply and lose their cool. Then you win.
I’ve cause many a troll to verbally stomp out of the room.
Even the true nihilists among trolls will get bored and leave if you respond to their every attack.
The best trolls are hard to emulate, however – they just casually drop something that looks innocent but gets an inflamed response and de-rails the whole discussion. Those ones you have to ignore.
But trolls who are just third-rate ideologues repeating something they heard on Rush – they’re bullies, and standing up to them does work, if you’re willing to have a bit of a dragon’s hide.
