Aurelius @97

So well said. Status quo beliefs are like handwriting in hardened concrete.

Obama, has the audacity of our hoping, all we got, but seems such a chameleon in terms of not exhibiting consistence and inspiring evidence of progressive proactivism. I continue to pray he will live up to the needs of this country.

Actually, people who spend little time in self-reflection suffer from a significant confirmation bias. This would be most of the American electorate. They don’t necessarily believe the thing they hear the most. They believe the thing that conforms most closely to what THEY ALREADY BELIEVE.

So, the politician who can tell a lie effectively, a lie that conforms to pre-existing bias, has the edge. Independents and undecideds are focus-group tested to death, and anything McCain does from here on out is going to be the result of that testing…when he doesn’t veer off-message. Message discipline is a problem for him, so things will probably continue to be tricky there, but if he can continue to harmonize with the confirmation biases of the undecideds, he has a chance to eek out a victory.

Obama better get with the fucking program or he will get beat.

Attack your opponents biggest strengths (e.g., Obama’s popularity), pretending they are failings.

Pretend your failings are actually your strengths (McCain is a civil rights leader!).

I can’t take three more months of this bull crap.

Ya Think suicide in the hospital…. ya right and with pain meds… Hospitals control meds with iron hands and you just don’t overdose on your own… he had to have been HELPED along!
Wouldn’t it be nice to see the real cause of death and not the lie as reported!

do you have a link that he was in the hospital when he “committed suicide”? that he was already at the hospital?

Thank you. How sad this is and how true. That hypnotic drumbeat and the bigger the whopper the less people apply critical thinking. Who would lie on such an exponential level? A slippery slope of moral laziness into amoral opportunism and self-protection.

People tend to believe not that which is true, but that which they hear most often. This is how over 70% of Americans came to believe that Iraq was behind 9/11 (false).

Louis Bayard in Salon about The Dark Side by Jane Mayer:

Sadism, as Orwell taught us, is best screened by syntax, and administration lawyers were especially adept at the neutering of language. Interrogations were merely “special” or “enhanced” or “robust” and were always consistent with the Bush administration’s “new paradigm.” Under duress, these euphemisms morphed into denials. “We don’t torture,” announced Vice President Cheney. “Torture is never acceptable,” Bush told the New York Times in January 2005. “Nor do we hand over people to countries that do torture.” But even the administration was hard-pressed to put a happy face on waterboarding — though the media certainly did their part to help, describing the practice in such value-neutral terms as “simulated drowning.” “It’s not simulated anything,” explains one SERE instructor. “It’s slow-motion suffocation with enough time to contemplate the inevitability of blackout and expiration … You can feel every drop. Every drop.”
