…they more easily fall a victim to a big lie than to a little one, since they themselves lie in little things, but would be ashamed of lies that were too big. Such a falsehood will never enter their heads and they will not be able to believe in the possibility of such monstrous effrontery and infamous misrepresentation in others; yes, even when enlightened on the subject, they will long doubt and waver, and continue to accept at least one of these causes as true. – Mein Kampf, Chapter 10
John McCain on fighting for equal rights:
I am proud of that record, from fighting for the recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday in my state . . .
John McCain’s actual record:
McCain Supported Gov. Evan Mecham’s Decision In 1987 To Rescind Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, “In a vote likely to haunt him for the rest of his public career, McCain voted against 1983 legislation establishing the third Monday in January as the federal holiday marking King’s birthday. Back home in Arizona, he supported Gov. Evan Mecham’s decision in 1987 to rescind an executive order creating a state holiday for King, but later reversed his position.” [Philadelphia Inquirer, 6/16/08]
This is a pattern for McCain, and it’s a pattern learned from Bush and Rove. Lie, lie big and lie often and enough people will believe you. Even if your lie is rebutted many people will never read the rebuttal and even of those who do, many will forget. People tend to believe not that which is true, but that which they hear most often. This is how over 70% of Americans came to believe that Iraq was behind 9/11 (false). Sure, folks eventually came around, but it took years, huge casualties and a long nasty insurgency. If the US had had what Bush expected – a quick and easy war, most Americans would always have believed Iraq was behind 9/11.
Now that was a much bigger lie than this, but the principle remains. Don’t shilly shally, don’t dance around a question—act like a truth teller and say it straight, even if it’s a lie.

Hiya, Ian.
Sadly, it’s all too easy for politicians to get away with this. Reporters are almost never prepared to counter with the truth when politicians say such things, and they don’t seem to be interested in checking on those statements afterwards.
John McCain has no regard for the truth, except when it happens to suit his purposes.
You can Digg this post HERE
Let’s face it, Americans like to believe the big myths about themselves. Anything that suggests they aren’t the leaders of the free world and the saviours of the Allies in WWII etc etc is more than they can bear.
McCain appeals because he is giving them the big myths. Obama may win the day if he can offer a bigger myth: He and his fellow Americans will lead the free world into a new time of racial and religious tolerance where everyone wants to be Americans again.
Reporters are almost never prepared to counter with the truth
because none of them know the truth going in (or at least do a damned fine job of pretending) and neither, as you note, is there any follow-up afterward.
Unless we’re talking about questions posed to Democrats, of course…
I heard that quote yesterday and knew that he was lying through his craggy, yellowed teeth.
McCain is a dishonorable man, and Barack Obama had better stop saying that McCain IS honorable, because he’s not. McCai is a conniving, lying, mean, vindictive, horrible little man.

Here’s an article on McCane going for the jugular. H/T TPM.
http://nymag.com/news/politics/powergrid/48928/
The Obama campaign, or perhaps better, the DNC, needs to appoint a John McCain Truth Squad and make it highly visible.
And Obama needs to stop calling Obama an honorable man (see GregB at 6).
But . . . But . . . But . . .
I thought John McCain was all about “Straight Talk” and “Honor” and “Standing By What You Say” and even “Taking Your Lumps When You Screw Up.”
Whatever happened to that John McCain?
Dugg. McSame, for me, falls into exactly the same category as W. How do I tell when they’re lying? Their lips move.
thought John McCain was all about “Straight Talk” and “Honor” and “Standing By What You Say” and even “Taking Your Lumps When You Screw Up.”
Whatever happened to that John McCain?
He screwed up.
Where are the lumps?
In my observation, truthlovers need to pay particular attention to McCain when he is denying something–such as, for example, his voting record, or previous public statements. He seems to think people will believe whatever he says, regardless of any evidence out there to the contrary.
Because, you know, he is such an Honorable Man.
Even the some of the villagers are starting to notice.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/150477
And Marion, you are so right.
ain’t that the truth!
Over his parotid gland.
He gave them to wife #1?
Explain something to me. Did Obama ban anyone from running ads on his behalf?
NYT says there will be 3 debates. First one in Oxford, Mississippi on 9/26, second and third on 10/7 and 10/15 with no sites yet. VP debate will be on 10/2.
Arizonians know McBush’s stand on MLK day…… it is well know that he has NO connections to either the black or Hispanic communities/groups here…. again and again it is really nice to see that the rest of the country see him as we have …..
BTW newsstand book store in Athens Greece airport English book section had three political books right next each other….. the two Obama books and right next to them was Media Matters book on McCain…… damn where is my camera when I needed it…..
I set ‘em up, you guys knock ‘em down…. heh.
That’s probably because he’s still operating on the “dead trees journalism” time frame. He can’t get it into his head that when he flat out lies it will be all over the blogs within 20 minutes and will stay there. Poor old sod — apparently he’s never turned a computer on and Sweet Ms. Cindy (who apparently does all his computer stuff for him) just hasn’t bothered to clue him in about that. Passive aggressive, just a bit? Hmmm???
This is how over 70% of Americans came to believe that Iraq was behind 9/11 (false).
Roughly the same number of Americans buy the “official story” behind 9/11.
Meanwhile, the FBI screams — The Emperor Has No Clothes! — on it’s UBL page, emphasizing the fact that he’s wanted for CRIMES OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES.

All so true, but it may well not work this time. The pukes are running the same campaign they arn last time out — hardly surprising, as it is the same team running it. This time four years ago they launched a successful attempt to smear Kerry’s only significant reason for being the democratic nominee — his war record, which was supposed to insulate the party against the charge of defeatism. But Kerry built his campaign on getting people to know and like him, and he didn’t respond. Obama is playing the respect game; he is working for the people’s respect, not their love. It’s a smarter play (read Machiavelli’s points on same), and it is harder for the smear artists to penetrate.
I also think that the Obama campaign are holding their fire until McCain has twisted enough rope to hang himself (apologize for mixed metaphor). McCain is building a record that is made for attack ads. It’s too early for them. September will be d-day for Obama. He will invade teeveeland with overwhelming force. In the meantime, the net-minders are keeping score and doing our best to keep the press at least partly honest.
Spot on. McCain will immediately say, “I never said that,” when confronted with his own statement. And continue the denial even in the face of the rare knowledgeable interviewer.
Well, to be accurate, his crimes were “outside the United States” because he wasn’t ever (to the best of my knowledge) on American soil. He did all the planning, etc., from “outside the United States.” IANAL, but that’s how I would interpret that.
That Rove is plotting strategy for McCain should come as no surprise. The Banksters aren’t looking for actual change…the status quo is bringing them all of the power and control they have dreamed of, to say nothing of riches.
Remember when Ron Suskind wrote this article?
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10…..ssuserland
The quote that managed to land this article on its own Wikipedia page under the heading of “Reality Based Community” quotes none other than Karl Rove as follows:
The aide said that guys like me were ”in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who ”believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.”
snip
”We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”
THE BIG LIAR is revealed here:
http://plungerspeaks.blogspot.com
You think he’s lying for John McCain now, but here in discernible reality, he still works for David Rockefeller and his globalist banksters.
Which was a problem. I voted for him, but I always found him about as likable as a 3 day old dead fish.
Let’s hope McCain makes a blunder so bad that it is fatal to his presidential campaign..after the Republican National Convention.
Although we cannot count on that.
Last night Hannity interviewed the author of one of the Obama swift-boat books. The author said Obama has close ties with terrorists (he might have been talking about Ayres, I missed most of it). Anyway he said that Obama would go to Hawaii to meet with them and even had a code name. I wasn’t laughing. Been here before and we know that people will believe it. Or at least be swayed.
A marvellous bit of Yiddish invective applies as well to him:
Well, a titanic temper tantrum during a debate would surely help, and probably isn’t all that unlikely.
Oy! What’s the Yiddish for “he was a liar in his mother’s womb?” I want a bumper sticker!
I agree.
Even if the MSM massively ignores it, millions of voters would see it.
actually, he’s not on the list for anything to do with 9/11.
USAMA BIN LADEN IS WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE AUGUST 7, 1998, BOMBINGS OF THE UNITED STATES EMBASSIES IN DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA, AND NAIROBI, KENYA. THESE ATTACKS KILLED OVER 200 PEOPLE. IN ADDITION, BIN LADEN IS A SUSPECT IN OTHER TERRORIST ATTACKS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
Interesting, aren’t it?
The biggest lie reveals that the United States uses WMD on its own and suicides its own. Cheney and Rumsfeld know ALL about this one.

As for the revelation that an Anthrax Scientist took his own life last week…that is
THE BIG LIE
ANTHRAX in 1975 – and Cheney & Rumsfeld are in the midst of it:
Did he jump or was he pushed?
I am writing this from Frederick, Maryland. I’ve just been filming, for Channel 4, a press conference in which the son of a CIA officer who died in suspicious circumstances presented his evidence that vice-president Dick Cheney and defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld were, in 1975, when part of the Gerald Ford administration, involved in a cover-up of the events surrounding his father’s death.

Frank Olson and the Artichoke project were dealing with Anthrax at Fort Detrick back in the fifties. Olson purportedly threw himself out a seventeenth story window of a New York Hotel.
THE BIG LIE continues today…same games, different names.
Where??
The text dates from 1999, apparently the picture (poster) was updated in 2001.
Clever way to keep the “digg this” link current! Cool!
The link is in my comment at 3, but thanks for digging a new one.
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..ity-crime/
“Today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) spoke to the National Urban League, a group “devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream.” When an audience member asked him how he planned to reduce urban crime, McCain praised Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s efforts in New York City before invoking the military’s tactics in Iraq as the model for crime-fighting:
MCCAIN: And some of those tactics — you mention the war in Iraq — are like that we use in the military. You go into neighborhoods, you clamp down, you provide a secure environment for the people that live there, and you make sure that the known criminals are kept under control. And you provide them with a stable environment and then they cooperate with law enforcement, etc, etc.”
” When the American public finally connects these three events: (1) Plamegate, the (2) AIPAC / Franklin / Rosen /Weissman Pentagon mole indictment and (3) Bush’s 2003 State of the Union lies and the real sources of Niger yellowcake forged documents, then finally we could see the impeachment of Bush. “
Larry Franklin Case:
Full name: Lawrence Anthony Franklin
Occupation: Department of Defense analyst at the Pentagon since 1979 in these offices: Office of the Secretary of Defense, International Security Affairs, Office of Near East and South Asia, Office of Northern Gulf Affairs, Iran Desk
FBI Case Leaked: 27 August 2004
Arrested by FBI: Wednesday, 4 May 2005
Charge: Communicating classified US national defense information to persons not entitled to receive that information; that this information could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign nation
Count 1: Conspiracy to communicate national defense information to persons not entitled to receive it
Count 2-4: Communication of national defense information to persons not entitled to receive it
Count 5: Communication of classified information to persons not entitled to receive it
Count 6: Conspiracy to communicate classified information to agent and representative of foreign government without specific authorization
Co-conspirators: Former employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Steve Rosen, AIPAC’s former policy director, and Keith Weissman, its former senior Iran analyst. Naor Gilon, in charge of policy at the Israeli Embassy in Washington. Uzi Arad, a former Israeli intelligence agent.
Feith is undersecretary of defense for policy, the third highest position at Defense. As a leading neocon and “hawk” on Middle East questions, he was one of the leading voices urging the war on Iraq. Throughout the years he has shown his strong support for Israel, and even appears regularly at Zionist Organization of America events. He holds tight to the belief that Iran is Israel’s archenemy.
Larry Franklin is suspected of passing a draft national-security presidential directive (NSPD) on Iran to AIPAC, which in turn is suspected of forwarding the classified document to Israel. The directive, which urged the administration to endorse regime change in Tehran, is believed to have been written by Michael Rubin, an up-and-coming neocon attached to the American Enterprise Institute. AIPAC has taken a leading role in discrediting Iran at every possible turn.
Is there an elephant in the room?
text is more or less the same here in 2008. Still no direct mention of 9-11. At best, he may be a “suspect”.

Interesting to note how many names on that list have gone down in ignominy recently. Finally.
Maybe Emptywheel would like to see this…post it over there too.
Very interesting.
That would be a valid interpretation if not for this:

According to this the FBI admits having “no hard evidence” of UBL’s involvement.
Creeped me out bigtime…
I don’t know about everything mentioned above but the bull that this scientist committed suicide (while in the hospital) and is therefore the anthrax villian is not even close to being believable. Very clumsy presentation, no?
His involvement may be that his brother was GWB’s roommate back in the oil days…and also, W’s father was meeting in NY with Bin Laden family members I believe, while 9/11 was happening….and the rest of his family members were flown out of the US within days of 9/11 with no FBI investigation…
Oh, jeez… In the sure and certain hope that this will not set off some sort of firestorm…
So who was responsible? I look really crappy in tinfoil hats…

Top Bin Laden Expert: The Tapes are Fakes
Kevin Barrett
As a PhD in Islamic and Arabic Studies, I hate to say this, but I’ll say it anyway. The events of 9/11 had nothing to do with Islam. The war on terror itself is as phony as the latest “Bin Laden tape.”
Compare the nose of the actor in the video tape with that of Bin Laden:
http://www.911blimp.net/vid_fakeOsamaVideo.shtml
This is NOT BIN LADEN.
Repeat this information often.
LOOK AT THE VIDEO – IT’S FAKE.
What I would like to see is a thorough profile of each senior member of McCain’s campaign. As disgusting as I think his recent anti-Obama advertisements have been, I am quite certain that McCain did not develop the concepts behind them?
Who did? So far the only one anyone has focused on is Steve Schmidt. That’s odd, considering that there other members of Rove’s inside team who held more senior positions in the Bush White House, and who are now assisting McCain.
Life is good just the usual ups and downs…My garden is doing great tyhe tomatoes are coming in real quick now, especially the sun Golds and the sweet 100s… they never seem to make into the house! The egg plants are doing good but not ready to pick but growing quickly… Peppers are filling out nicely and we will soon have more green beans than we can eat, will be sharing with neighbors.
The chili for Suz’ POD party is on the stove getting all cozy and melding all the flavors together:>) I still need to make a special batch for Newtonusr… with da peppers floating on the top..
KInda OT and just a drive by:
I just envisoned a great ad to run against John McCain. Maybe a 527 will pick it up.
Pictures of John McCain’s 6 Military plane crashes. (images of headlines, press releases about John McCain) A voiceover says; there is no question that John McCain served America honorably and is deeply respected for his service to our Country.
Voice Continues: The United States has been under the controls of a mediocre military pilot for the last 8 years and has brought us to our current mess.
The United States cannot afford to give the leadership controls of the country to another mediocre Republican pilot.
To change the leadership of this country, you must vote for the candidate that can fundamentaly change the direction of The United States of America.
How many on that list have:
A.) Resigned in disgrace amongst numerous failures.
B.) Been Indicted.
C.) Been Convicted.
D.) Been Commutted.
E.) Been Pardoned.
I would bet too many to count. Liars is a polite and too kind word to describe that list. They are traitors to their country. Sell Outs for the mighty dollar.
Ya Think suicide in the hospital…. ya right and with pain meds… Hospitals control meds with iron hands and you just don’t overdose on your own… he had to have been HELPED along!
Wouldn’t it be nice to see the real cause of death and not the lie as reported!
The next obvious question should be: why are we fighting a war in Afghanistan against a guy we have no hard evidence was involved in 9/11?
The obvious answer (or not so obvious): to keep the Russian mafia from taking de facto control over the Afghanistan narco-state.
Heh! My Sweet 100s never make it much more than 2 feet from the plant either! For some reason my peppers are droopy and failing to thrive. I’ve heard that around here they do better in pots, so I may try that next year. How do you have green beans and eggplant at the same time?! Lucky you… The heat and humidity slaughtered my beans a while ago. I’m hoping for a fall crop, though…
Jim:
You only think they are traitors to their country.
Their country is Israel, to whom they are most loyal.
Check out Chertoff’s citizenship.
There. Fixed. To touch any part of his military experience, even the fact that if he weren’t a legacy he’d have been washed out of the Naval Academy, is to hug the third rail.
My beans love the heat! But my peas are seeing better days… will plant more in September, I will also plant more cool weather veggies like broccoli Brussel sprouts and cabbages, carrots and it will be time to put in the garlic for the over winter growing…
We have some roma’s that are so sweet I can’t get them into the house.. just the right size to pop them into your mouth.. they are some kind of a heritage variety that I found at the local garden store..
How many on that list have:
Been invited to be on Dancing With The Stars?
heh.
I’m really looking forward to a cooler weather garden because it’s virtually impossible to go outside during the daytime now. I’ve got a new fence, east facing, and I’m guessing that peas and/or beans will love it. Lettuces will be nice to have out of the garden again too…
How about ‘dancing with the liers”

good, I hope he wins.
it would trivialize him further than he already is.
That does make all the difference. Here in the Steamy South if the temperature is 90 and you factor in the humidity it feels like 110… And the plants respond accordingly.

Of these men whom you perceive as mortal and flawed, their own self-perception is that they are in fact the masters of the universe.

Attack your opponents biggest strengths (e.g., Obama’s popularity), pretending they are failings.
Pretend your failings are actually your strengths (McCain is a civil rights leader!).
I can’t take three more months of this bull crap.
Actually, people who spend little time in self-reflection suffer from a significant confirmation bias. This would be most of the American electorate. They don’t necessarily believe the thing they hear the most. They believe the thing that conforms most closely to what THEY ALREADY BELIEVE.
So, the politician who can tell a lie effectively, a lie that conforms to pre-existing bias, has the edge. Independents and undecideds are focus-group tested to death, and anything McCain does from here on out is going to be the result of that testing…when he doesn’t veer off-message. Message discipline is a problem for him, so things will probably continue to be tricky there, but if he can continue to harmonize with the confirmation biases of the undecideds, he has a chance to eek out a victory.
Obama better get with the fucking program or he will get beat.
Aurelius @97
So well said. Status quo beliefs are like handwriting in hardened concrete.
Obama, has the audacity of our hoping, all we got, but seems such a chameleon in terms of not exhibiting consistence and inspiring evidence of progressive proactivism. I continue to pray he will live up to the needs of this country.
