A few weeks ago 11 southern California congresswomen-- spanning the ideological landscape all the way from Orange County Blue Dog Loretta Sanchez to progressive heroine Linda Sánchez-- threw a fundraiser for Democratic women candidates for House seats around the country. There was a whole lotta speechifying. But it gave an observer a rare opportunity to compare candidates, as well as incumbents.
This is a very good kind of forum for south Florida progressive Annette Taddeo. She shines. She has a firm grasp of the issues, a charisma you can't buy, a great sense of style, a genuineness and warmth that comes through when she talks. In terms of the impact she made on the audience, she was right up there with Darcy Burner and Linda Sánchez (who, with lines like "We need to put Karl Rove behind bars" and "We need to get Mean Jean Schmidt out of Congress," was never going to be beat by anyone).
I had an opportunity to spend plenty of time with Annette that day and the next day she had dinner with Jane and a couple days later spent some quality time with Digby at Netroots Nation.
We all came to the same conclusion: we need to help this woman get into Congress.
The first time I wrote about Annette I was having trouble seeing through the flack-filled air of "inevitability" created by Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Forida's very own Rahm Emanuelette. DWS is working mighty hard to save the seat of her extreme right-wing pal, Republican incumbent Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. DWS has been successful in creating a media narrative that Ros-Lehtinen can't be beat because she's a moderate-- false-- and because the district is too Republican-- false-- and because her constituents love her-- also false. Two days later, I had sorted out the story and separated the truth from the Wasserman Schultz.
Unfortunately, though DWS is co-chair of the DCCC's Blue America program and has been successful in keeping Annette from being endorsed by it. Establishment Democratic donors, the ones who write the big checks, tend to write checks for candidates on that list. Aside from the Rahmish inevitability narrative, DWS is also starving the campaign of money. That said, Annette is the first Democrat to ever give Ros-Lehtinen a real contest-- and the first one to raise over $70,000. As of June 30 she had raised $644,990, a lot, although Ros-Lehtinen is massively financed by every corporate special interest she's ever served-- and that means every corporate special interest.
Today we have an opportunity to talk with Annette and get an idea of what kind of congressmember she will be. Please join us in the comments section and ask her any questions you think would be relevant for the representative from South Beach, Little Havana and Key West. I asked her to define herself and give us an idea of the most basic differences between the kind of congressmember the incumbent is and kind of member she will be.
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has been very good at doing a wonderful p.r. campaign and leading people to think that she's a moderate. You are not a moderate when you vote 100% against a woman's right to chose-- not even taking into account cases of rape or incest. You are not a moderate when you are the ranking member of the International Relations Committee and you are Bush's rubber stamp on the gag rule taking away all the funding in regard to any kind of issue that deals with birth control, even for women with AIDS. You are not a moderate when you are in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act-- and you vote that way. You're not a moderate when you're against children's health care and you vote five times against the extension of S-CHIP. And you are definitely not a moderate when you support President Bush's war 100% of the time, every step of the way and you never question him one time.
The district is changing-- and changing in ways that favor Annette. This year's new registrations favor Democrats by an astounding 10-1. Even Little Havana, which is newly represented in Tallahassee by a Democrat-- is no longer a Cuban bastion and there are more non-Cuban Hispanics there-- and throughout FL-18-- than there are Cuban-Americans. When Annette is elected she will be the first member of Congress with South American heritage.
The funniest thing about this race is that Ros-Lehtinen, who is wisely avoiding televised debates with Annette, is now taking all of her cues from Annette and has, in the last 2 months utterly abandoned her reflexive rubber stamp posture and is voting like a Democrat. "The only thing she has left to do," Annette laughed, "is switch parties. She's so desperate to keep her job... after seven and a half years of following President Bush, all of all sudden she wants to unstick herself." But Ros-Lehtinen, despite all the help from Wasserman Schultz, is very confused. She's taken nearly $70,000 from Big Oil & Gas and she's always votes in favor of their agenda.
Now that she that she has an opponent she says she's against drilling off of the Florida coast... but she's ok with drilling in ANWR. She can't take back her 18 years of extreme right-wing voting. And even last month she was still voting to continue the occupation of Iraq and to give Bush the power, through FISA, to wiretap Americans and to grant retroactive immunity to criminal telecom executives, who, after all, have already "donated" $10,700 to her campaign so far this year.
Annette, on the other hand vociferously opposes FISA, unequivocally supports women's right to choice, full and complete equality under the law for all Americans, a speedy, safe end to the war in Iraq (she's a signer of the Responsible Plan to End the War). And, unlike Ros-Lehtinen, she's never had Jeb Bush as a campaign manager. Please join me at the Blue America ActBlue page and help send this extraordinary woman to Congress.

Hi, Annette. Welcome to FDL. I hope this will be the first of many visits. I know you were out walking the district today so I’m betting your physically exhausted. I hope we can stimulate you intellectually here. When I heard you say that Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the incumbent, still vehemently opposes choice for women– even in the case of rape or incest (or even rape and incest)– I was shocked that the local media buys into this whole fake moderate thing. I mean she has voted for every single Bush agenda item regarding Iraq, voted– as you pointed out– against health care for needy children five times, voted for that horrendous FISA bill… why is she getting away with calling herself a moderate and an independent? It’s absurd. Are there any media outlets in Miami-Dade calling her on it?
Hello Annette and welcome to firedoglake! Looking forward to a great discussion.
Hey Howie!
Welcome to FDL Ms Taddeo!
Wasn’t Ros-Lehtinen Reagan’s “favorite” Congressperson or some such nonsense?
Hi Howie - thank you so much for that introduction, and I want to thank you, Blue America, and all of your readers for this honor.
To answer your question simply: no. There has, unfortunately, not been a lot of investigative reporting, so Ros-Lehtinen has been able to say one thing and vote another way.
However, when I do go on Spanish radio, and I bring up her record, the callers are responding very positively to my message.
People are ready for a change!
She’s certainly the Bush family’s. Jeb was her campaign manager for her first congressional campaign; she’s been so loyal to GWB’s agenda that she routinely votes against her constituents to support him. There’s a picture floating around of the three of them together with her and GWB about to smooch. I was going to put it up but it’s still morning on the West Coast and I didn’t want to make any of our readers out here ill.
Thanks, dakine01. Reagan loved her, Bush Sr. loved her, and Bush Jr. loves her. In fact, as Howie mentioned, Jeb Bush ran her first campaign in 1989. Her first - and only serious challenge - until now.
Welcome future Congresswoman!
Now that Former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman has testified before Congress that the Clear Skies Act of 2003 would allow more mercury pollution, would you repeal or fix the Act?
I think people are ready for change too. But how hard is it going to be to make the voters in FL-18 understand that change starts at home and it isn’t just all about Bush and Cheney? It’s a rare voter who really understands how their congressmember votes. What I’m worried about there is that the media narrative is that she’s a “moderate” will take hold and he hard to overcome. What can you do to smash it up? Actually, this is probably a good time to mention that Crooks and Liars has a kick-ass video up today that has a perfect frame for the absurd notion that Ros-Lehtinen is a moderate or an independent. Strong stuff and everyone should take a look at it at some point.
It does seem like just about every R (and some D) candidate out there has a “Bush Kiss” photo in their background. Maybe there needs to be a generic “Kiss float” built that just tours all the competitive CDs and remind folks how non-independent so many of the Rs are.
Hello, Ms Taddeo, and thanks for chatting today at FireDogLake. What are the issues you find that voters raise with you unprompted as you campaign? Are you surprised at issues your district’s voters think are important this year — anything under the radar, that is not making the national news?
Thank you again for coming by today, and for taking time from your busy schedule to talk with us.
PS…. DailyKos users may recommend this new diary directing Kossaks to this chat today!
Hi Annette,
Wasn’t Ileana’s husband a swift-boater?
Howie - it’s 2:00 pm in Miami - I hope the readers out here can stomach this.
Awesome, Welcome Annette!
Thanks for running!
I’m very happy to see this endorsement! As someone who lives in the district, I’d like to say how nice it is to have such a good candidate running.
Actually, while I’m at it, I should mention a couple of other things:
- The campaign organization is terrific
- IR-L is clearly running scared. I’ve never gotten so much email from her before, and it’s all about ‘distraction’ issues like federal funding for universities. It’s never about Bush’s economy, and especially never about the war.
- Name recognition remains not-so-great, and that I think is what is driving the current poll numbers. As we get past Labor Day and people start to focus a bit, I think the poll numbers will get a lot better.
PS. Ms. Taddeo - will you endorse the Responsible Plan Against the War, please?
Bwahahaha!
Are you able to get that on any TV stations in your district? That is GREAT!
Does Ros-Lehtinen have a position about why Baghdad does not have even 12 hours of electricity a day? I mean the US spends tons of cash over there and they do not have electricity, how are we going to win the hearts and minds?
Ha! As horrible as the truth is, that is a funny ad. Are you going to run that on TV or are mostly using the internet to get the good word out about your progressive campaign?
Here’s Annette Taddeo’s campaign website.
Hi Teddy, thank you for your question and for posting the link to the chat.
People in South Florida are primarily concerned with the issues that are affecting their everyday lives - down here that means, above all else, the economy, jobs, housing, and health care. Our region is unfortunately number one in inflation, number one in job loss, and number one in housing foreclosures. People are hurting.
The voters do constantly mention to me, however, that they wish their representative would focus on the issues affecting us right here at home, rather than being so concerned with 90 miles away.
Please see the last paragraph of the post where it is stated that she has already endorsed the Responsible Plan.
Sandman - the Clear Skies Act is yet one more Republican piece of legislation that has a nice name and bad effects. We need to overhaul the act and enact legislation that will actually put real environmental standards in place.
FABULOUS VIDEO
It’s a bit long for a TV ad, but for an online viral video, it’s just what the doctor ordered!
My favorite line: “Every Decider should have a good rubber stamp.”
LOL!
As a Democrat, but also a Pennsylvania resident, I telephoned DWS office last week and asked her staff to explain why she does not campaign on your behalf and they could not give me an answer. Their 40 second response, kept dodging the question. I left my name, address and telephone number and asked that someone get back to me with an answer. So far no one has. Is there any way we could put more direct pressure on Wasserman-Schultz?
Hi Froomkin - first, I would like to point out that Froomkin is a fantastic blogger in Miami, and it’s great to see you here.
I am so glad you asked about the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq. I have proudly endorsed it, and I posted about it on several sites last week. I was against this war from the beginning, while Ros-Lehtinen has rubber-stamped Bush on Iraq, and continues to vote with him unquestioningly.
Yeah! Humor works against these monstors. I wish we had even better tools, though, sometimes. Good Luck, Ms. Taddeo!. Check coming after pay day.
Recommended and commented, Teddy!
Welcome, Ms. Taddeo. I wish you the best in your race.
I usually ask candidates here what they would do to defend and restore the Constitution of the United States. With your position on FISA and retroactive immunity, I feel like maybe I don’t need to ask you that.
To everyone asking about the ad - thank you for all your kind words about it! We will be running an aggressive TV campaign, but this one is mostly for the “Internets.” Spread it around!
What can we do to get you on the Red-to-Blue list as soon as possible? I no longer get emails from the DCCC so I don’t keep up with their shenanigans like I used to, but do you know if they are responsive to pressure from, you know, citizens?
Annette, I know your district– which includes South Beach and Key West, has a really large gay population. I’ve noticed that Ros-Lehtinen has tried painting herself as a moderate on that too– although she has voted badly on gay-oriented issues 75% of the time. I’m sure that will be enough for shameless kiss ass insiders like the Log Cabin Republicans and HRC to endorse her, but do gay voters in FL-18 understand the difference between the kind of support you have given their community and the lip service Ros-Lehtinen gives them?
So this would be a different froomkin from the Dan Froomkin who writes for the WashingtonPost.com — thanks for the clarification.
neurophius - as you write, you know where I stand on FISA and retroactive immunity. I pledge to uphold, defend, and restore the Constitution of the United States.
Thank you, EdwardTeller!
Teddy, I ask them about Annette constantly and I’m always given a bunch of excuses, They adamantly deny that Debbie Wasserman Schultz is keeping her from being endorsed but I don’t believe them. The keep telling me that they think Annette will be endorsed “soon.” Soon isn’t good enough when institutional donors are writing their checks now. Wasserman-Schultz is probably trying to run out the clock. She’s a really venal character, every bit as bad as Emanuel, if not as powerful yet.
SusanS - I’m not sure if Ros-Lehtinen’s husband was a swift-boater, but he is a registered lobbyist and attorney who has gone after her political oppoonents in the past.
You got it!
I don’t see anything on your site about domestic surveillance or the other recent additions to the government’s powers. Do you support them, or do you think that it’s time to change them? If you want change, what kind do you want?
Annette is being overly polite. Ros-Lehtinen’s husband is a vicious Republican hack who arrested Democratic Mayor Raul Martinez just as he was about to face Ros-Lehtinen in a congressional race. The charges were eventually thrown out and Martinez is running in another district this year. (In fact, he’s running against Lincoln Diaz-Balart, the lunatic fringe Republican who thinks he is destined to be the first president of Cuba post-Castro.) Ros-Lehtinen’s husband, though, is a very dangerous and shady character.
Hilarious video!! Well done.
Sandman - Ros-Lehtinen avoids talking about Iraq these days.
I do want to mention that it is deeply concerning that while we’re spending hundreds of millions of dollars every day in Iraq, we have infrastructure problems right here in our country, including in district 18. For example, we need a sewer system in the middle and upper Florida Keys in order for us to protect the only coral reef in the U.S.
Thank you, egregious!
and here I thought our Alaska politics was the nuttiest around….
Do you constituents, know that the National Debt is over $9 trillion and that Japan and China, are the two countries that own the most US treasuries? And that the Bush Administration with the help of republican like your opponent have increased spending more than any administration in US History?
May 2008
Japan 578.7 billion
China, Mainland 506.5 billion

Okay, let’s try a donation match today to keep things rolling: I will match five of your ten-dollar contributions today here to Annette Taddeo’s campaign to unseat this awful Florida GOP Congresswoman. Make a ten dollar contribution, five of you firepups, and see it blossom to $100!
Apologies, this comment was directed to Annette. I’m in too much of a hurry this morning.
Need coffee.
Howie - Ros-Lehtinen works through the press to convince people that she is a moderate on LGBT issues, but she votes against the community when it matters.
She voted for the Defense of Marriage Act. She voted against LGBT adoption. She voted against allowing schools to address anti-gay violence and prejudice. And when this district needed a leader in 2004, Ros-Lehtinen simply abstained from the Federal Marriage Amendment vote.
Cujo359 - I speak and write on the need to protect our civil liberties all the time. I will defend and uphold our Constitution, and I will fight against warrantless wiretapping, retroactive immunity, and other violations of government power when I am in Congress.
I will also make sure the website shows that right away! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
OK, I like this idea– and I’ll raise you one. Not sure what that means exactly– I don’t gamble– put I’ll match whatever Teddy puts in. So I think that means if 5 people put in $10 each, it’ll work out to $150. The Blue America ActBlue page is here.
Count me in, Teddy–and Howie
Since my money will now be tripled, I’ve indulged my ActBlue habit again.
I believe Americans will support any tax or incentive plan that will bring 1 million new manufacturing jobs to America, for example, the LCD panel, I am looking at right now, all seem to be made in China.
Welcome to FDL, Ms. Taddeo. As a south Floridian myself (I’m actually in DWS’s district in west Broward), it pains me to see the environmental degredation due to the rampant growth down here, not to mention that all this excess real estate is keeping the local real estate market in the tank. Do you see any opportunities for smart (or smarter) growth down here, and if so, how would you encourage it at the federal level?
Thanks, neuro!
Thanks, Cujo!
(Folks, be sure to tell us about your ten-dollar donations here in the thread, so Howie and I can double-match them today.)
Another question for our guest — do you think the lack of an “official” Florida primary earlier this year will discourage Democratic voter turnout? Or have people gotten over their hurt feelings? Are voters in your district excited about Barack Obama?
Thank you, FishGuyDave.
First, we need more federal dollars for public transportation and affordable housing in South Florida, and we need to protect the Everglades and the Coral Reef.
We also need to invest in green jobs and green growth, and that comes from reforming the federal tax code. In Congress, I will work to create incentives for energy from solar, wind, ocean turbine, and more. These projects will combat global warming, create good, new jobs right here in the U.S., and bolster our national security.
People are very excited about the November election, and we are doing everything we can to increase turnout up and down ballot this November. Our campaign is phonebanking every day now - everyone who lives in the area should come down to our Headquarters in Suniland Plaza to help out! Call as at 305-661-6499, and ask for Paul.
Annette, most casual observers would think that Ros-Lehtinen’s only strong raison d’etre for even being in politics is to bring about regime change in Cuba. It doesn’t look like she’s had any success at all. Are people in Miami ever going to get sick of that shallow demogoguery? Or are they still sucking it up and buying tickets for Lincoln Diaz-Balart’s inaugural ball in Havana?
I am in for $10
There are pictures of the 363 tons of cash (the largest transfer of cash in US history) to Iraq, because the Iraqi Finance Minister asked us to, so he could pay Iraqi pensions. The US just gave the money away. (Again, all in cash) That would be a powerful ad compared to some local need.
Someone was telling me that you have one of the most advanced volunteer efforts of any Democrat anywhere in the country and that your intern program is the envy of every campaign in Florida. Can you tell us something about it so we can pass the ideas along to our other Blue America candidates?
Howie - people are fed up with Ros-Lehtinen’s single-minded devotion to Cuba - even Cuban-Americans.
But it is going to take a lot of resources to communicate to the voters in one of the most expensive media markets in the country that there is a real alternative this year. As we get those resources, we also get out our message that I am a progressive Democrat who is going to go to Congress and clean up Washington. And that means ending the war in Iraq, providing access to affordable health care to all Americans, and fixing the economy.
Best of luck in your race, Annette.
We will be well rid of Ileana so as it is, and it will be a pleasure having you in the House.
Thanks, Sandman!
(Need two more $10 donors to complete the challenge, firepups!)
Please donate here
in for $10! (+ $40 more)
We have a GREAT volunteer and internship program - if you go to www.voteTaddeo.com you’ll see a picture on the home page with myself and about a dozen of our twenty five interns - and counting! These young men and women have been amazing, and have dedicated so much of their free time to work on this campaign and to show that even the youngest voters in South Florida are hungry for a change in Washington. I am so grateful to them. Thank you - all of you.
Truthfully, the keys to our success are a mix of back-to-basics and new technology. We started by getting the word of mouth out through blogs, the web, and campuses. After that, success has come beause we have ensured that every single intern is really engaged in the campaign, and understands the value of the contribution they are making. Before long, the first interns were bringing their friends, they were bringing more people, and on and on.
In fact, when the chat ends, I am headed over to Costco (Democratic CEO and pro-labor) where I’ll be shopping for an end-of-summer Intern Appreciation Fiesta that we’re having tonight!
Oh - and in terms of getting great volunteers and interns, it doesn’t hurt to be campaigning in South Florida!
Thank you, Elliot!
Thank you Sandman, Teddy, and Rosalind!
Thanks for being here, Annette, and for your issues stance.
I just heard some upsetting news, there is an indication that Obama supports the role of Blackwater and may continue and even cultivate their present role. They guarded him at some points during his recent trip. Though they are being sued they are continually being granted more big money contracts, one now having them San Diego-based for the WAR ON DRUGS. How do you feel about this? What can we do about this?
Also, how much danger is Robert Wexler in down there for fighting the good fight? I understand there is a fierce backlash on him.
Thanks, Annette. Keep fighting and we’ll do whatever we can to help. We’ll stay in touch with Seamus and Ross in your office to make sure we’re up to date on the race there. If you have any ideas about what we can do to help, please don’t hesitate to let us know. And have a great Fiesta with the interns this evening!
Libbyliberal - thank you for the questions. I am against the use of mercenaries AND no-bid contracts.
Regarding Congressman Wexler, he is in a strongly Democratic district, and I applaud his efforts to help our country.
Thanks for coming Annette, you are a terrific candidate and we are delighted to hear more about your views. Keep up the good work, and please stop by again some time!
Here’s map of the FL-18 district. I now see the “expensive media market” Annette’s referring to.
Thank you, Howie, Blue America, and everyone else who participated.
This has been great, and I will be back soon!
Thank you again,
Annette
p.s. If there are any more questions, please post them and I will check back in the next couple of days and respond.
New Ian
Annette, thank you for spending the afternoon with us today.
Ian is upstairs with McCain and the Art of the Big Lie
Annette, your words are great for the morale! Good luck to you and thank you for your service and integrity.
Comments remain open for 24 hours, so I hope you are available to respond within that period, thanks.
Thanks for stopping by, Annette. Good luck.
Sorry - I was in the UK last week and missed that. Bravo for signing on.
Thanks so much for this wonderful chat, Congresswoman-to-be!
And thanks to everyone for making the match work!
I wanted to add, Corn for Ethanol, we use 30% of the corn crop to produce 3% of our fuel, and the price of chicken, beef and pork has increased. Using corn was the worst choice possible, almost like Bush is trying to have the program fail. Corn takes more water than any other crop, another downside. When you are elected to Congress, try to get them to switch to Sugar Beets.
Thanks for coming to the Lake!
