It’s hard to sense a pattern here. Republicans who go on a diatribe against Janet Jackson’s exposed areola bling, have no problem collecting singles and fives out of the g-string of the woman working the pole at a Las Vegas strip club.
Meanwhile, the same crowd is making it harder for American women to do the basics – all because sex is icky to them:
The Department of Health and Human Services is reviewing a draft regulation that would deny federal funding to any hospital, clinic, health plan or other entity that does not accommodate employees who want to opt out of participating in care that runs counter to their personal convictions, including providing birth-control pills, IUDs and the Plan B emergency contraceptive…
The regulation would require any entity receiving HHS funding to certify that it does not discriminate against organizations or individuals who do not want to provide services they consider objectionable.
The most controversial section defines abortion as "any of the various procedures — including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation."
In other words YOU the customer get the short end of the stick because some repressed idiot objects to you even preventing conception.
But, hey, at least we know how John McCain would answer questions on this topic.
And remember, McCain doesn’t represent his campaign on this issue.

A blast from the past but, oh so true. Bloom County
Why do Republicans hate women?
And McCain doesn’t know enough to answer that question? LOSER!
Thanks for that, SD! Cheered up the day already!
Just read PW’s post. Rethug fundraiser at a strip club? I’ve have some quirky ideas for fundraisers but a strip club never entered my mind. And the area’s biggest club owner is a supporter and a real Dem.
Rethug family values: The family that lays together stays together.
“I’m John McCain, and I approved this message. My staff, however, has some reservations and concerns about it, so don’t quote me on any of this.”
You’re welcome. It sure did the same for me.
that look that flashes in his eyes around second 12 is really scary. I wonder if that was a suppressed anger flash or what.
The only good thing about the proposed HHS policies is that come January they can be deep-sixed. I’ve never understood this thing Rethugs have about sex. The Rethugs are more like the Taliban when it comes to women and women’s issues. Rethug men need to think about, and with, something other than their dicks.
It’s about controlling women, not about sex. And I’ll bet you dollars to doughnuts that an Obama admin won’t change anything on the excuse that there are other priorities.
I think you mean “conception” for the last word, not contraception.
Anyone who things the reich wingnuts don’t have as their bottom line the deep sixing of easily available contraception by women is blind. It’s about punishing women for having sex. It always was.
Juan Cole, of all people, has issued the latest creative challenge Now that Tedfest is behind us I think this one deserves front page attention.
It’s not about punishing women for having sex, it’s about controlling them by keeping them pregnant.
One of the best posts out there about Prevention vs. Punishment.
I see them as one and the same.
Oh, I understand the control of women aspect quite well, but there’s also a separate, though connected, thing about sex itself.
agreed
Gee, they seem very different to me.
This was an “aha” moment for me when I first read it a long time ago.
OT – Exxon Mobil made nearly $1500 per second
at cnn.com
Interesting.
He looks like he’s THAT close to blowing up. I believe this guy wants to throttle that reporter, but, he managed to barely control himself.
He’s a dangerous, irresponsible c*nt-calling puppet.
[edited by mod]
and yes, it’s about dominance and control. What better way to exercise that? The “strict father” paradigm of Lakoff’s is the basis for this and kind of explains a lot about where the wingnuts are coming from. They are SO threatened by strong women.
According to the attempted SD law even if a girl is raped by her father the girl gets punished
Anyone think that men have always been resentful about how women have control over them…by using sex…either allowing for or the denial of? How many times have we read here that men are thinking with their dicks instead of their heads. I think even though women are seen as more emotional and men as being more rational, that men in fact are driven by their libidos more than women. Ha. Men have said oh we can’t have women in charge. What about when they are on their periods? Hummmm, men may be more consistant in what drives them.
So, it would be if what I said has any merit, that men want to punish women for having power over them. They want to feel in control of women.
Possibly?
Can you expand upon that?
That’s because she didn’t obey her father and master—at least that’s the sick thinking perpetuated by the wing nuts. Funny how they can spew forth the Bible to condemn others for sins but conveniently leave out the part about incest. The Holiness Code in Leviticus applies to thee and not to me.
The SD legislature had passed a law that would not allow abortion even in the case of incest. Ultimately the law was struck down by a referendum.

What Better Way To Celebrate Being An Iraqi Woman Than Blowing Shit Up?
you really should read the whole article.
That’s what I thought. They tried that shit here in FL and it didn’t pass. A lot of the forced birth plans dreamed up by these nutjobs are spearheaded by Rethug women here in FL.
I hope what I said wasn’t offensive. I was just kind of thinking out loud.
How ’bout all those commercials for drugs to help you “get in the mood.”?
It’s not a new plan. T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) discusses marriage between tribes. Al-Qa’ida hasn’t had a lot of success with this tactic because of tribal reluctance to accept foreigners into the clan. Lawrence also writes about widows seeking revenge for the death of their husbands. Accomplished a little differently in his time, however.
The squirrels. They’re baaack
OT, and as per above, Exxon-Mobil just posted the largest quarterly profit, of any company, anywhere, anytime in history – $11.7 BILLION!
In one quarter, mind you.
And, per CNBC analyst, Wall Street is pissed – expected them to do better than that. “Ferchrissakes, we gave ya $140/bbl oil, and the best you can do is make $11.7 Billion?!
Losers….
you mean back then, the idea was to marry the woman then let her get raped so she would have to kill herself or be killed?
I think that the McCain Campaign is sedating McCain to keep him from blowing up. That’s why he appears dazed and confused sometimes.
Analysts are trying to take the buzz away from yet another Bush Mission Accomplished moment. Killjoys.
Oil when Bush took office: $32.19/barrel
Oil today: $122.19/barrel
Nice jawboning by the Preznit to get oil prices down. I guess this is what McCain supporters want since he is promising more of the same.
if it was only trying to enforce the “non-procreative sex is wrong” bullshit, then why the focus on women? i think there is more to it…. like the idea that women might *gasp* enjoy sex.
and we sure can’t have that
Maybe this is a silly question, but why would an organization want to receive funding to provide services they found objectionable?
Kind of like the Quakers asking for a contract to replace Blackwater in Iraq.
No. Sorry if I gave you that impression. The key is marriage. Marriage between tribes usually has a diplomatic component, forming some sort of alliance. Marriage to foreigners is difficult, if not impossible, among most tribes. If a foreign fighter was able to marry into a tribe, then have the wife raped so that she would become a suicide bomber, that would most likely result in the killing of the husband if found out. Tribal honour above all else. That’s why I don’t think Al-Qa’ida has had a lot of success with it. Not to say it hasn’t happened. I imagine with some research I could come up a little info on why Iraki women become suicide bombers. My guess is widow’s revenge or devotion to the cause. In Algeria women were used to place bombs in cafes, etc, but left before detonation. Now I have something to do this evening.
Ha! You’d think that they’d have learned that a satisfied woman is easier to deal with. Women learned that one a long time ago. :) Am I sounding sexist yet?
“dazed and confused” is a bad thing? I always considered it to be kind of a specialty. Of mine, I mean.
But seriously – I think McLame is simply fatigued. Already. St. John obviously thought he was up the the rigors of a presidential campaign, but here, at only the end of July, he’s lookin’ just about through (physically).
He’s not gonna make it to the stretch run.
aah, now I understand what you meant. thanks.
Lawrence doesn’t go into what acts widows took as revenge. There may be some accounts but I haven’t seen them.
What is insidious in this is the language slipped in that an embryo is a human being. If you accept this, you have a 14th Amendment “equal protection of the law” argument against abortion and almost all contraception. Such a reading would not distinguish between a “human being” conceived as a result of incest or rape. It is hard to see how this would not be extended to protect in vitro embryos. There is also the odd term “natural birth” which would preclude Caesarean sections. Embryos’ rights would trump the rights of adult women. Many times a fertilized egg spontaneously aborts. This would be the death of a human being. How such deaths would be tracked let alone known is unclear. In short, this is another goofy, anti-scientific, anti-woman move by people who haven’t and can’t think through the inherent contradictions between their religious views and the physical universe they live in.
No point in sitting here talking to myself.
Taking my marbles to the other room. Later.
Am I sounding sexist yet?
gettin’ there – please continue…
a satisfied woman is easier to deal with.
now you got me thinking I’m not doin’ my part – for the cause, ya know…
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things

McCain is taking weekends off, Is there a difference between McC on mondays and McC on fridays?
if women started enjoying sex… why, the next thing you know they will start believing that their bodies are their own instead of belonging, rightly, to their family. and if women start believing that their bodies are their own… why, the next thing you know they might start believing that their minds are their own. then they might start thinking for themselves… and next thing you know women will be deciding for themselves what they will do instead of doing what they are told to do.
jesus fucking christ.
we can’t have that. must nip it in the bud or we risk loosing control of the entire social order!
Namaste
Preventing conception? Seems like they are the ones preventing contraception.
But, I thought women just need better training. Then they can make as much money as men!
(And, of course, I think men And women and everything in between are happier when they are satisfied, feel good about themselves, mind and body and have a full belly. You’ve heard “f*ck ‘em and feed ‘em”?)
The “productivity” index continues improve
So, did Laura Bush not use contraception? If she didn’t then it must of been the rythm method and if not that then she abstained from sex except when she and George wanted a couple of kids.
I think there were fertility issues there, ineffectual swimmers?
Is there a difference between McC on mondays and McC on fridays?
Monday and Tuesday – no problem. By Wednesday, the “John McCain does not speak for the McCain Campaign” rule kicks in. By Friday, Johnny Mac requires more aides at his side, to remind him that is *is* Friday, that his name is John, that it’s Friday and he has the next two days off, and to tell him that since he’s done such a *great* job this week, he can pick which one of his estates he wants to spend the weekend at.
And that he gets to choose whether or not he wants “the wife” to be there for the weekend.
I always end up going back to biology when thinking about these issues…not that it is particularly encouraging to an old feminist. But if you look at the behavior of other mammals, the alpha male controlling a harem of females in order to impregnate as many as possible himself, including infanticide when he unseats the ruling alpha male in order to bring the female into estrus and also avoid energy expenditure on someone else’s progeny…well, then human behavior isn’t all that different. There was a really good Nova a few months back on a mountain gorilla group in Rwanda (I think) that was a microcosm of human sexual behavior.
I forgot Thursdays.
Set aside for doctor’s appointments and/or minor surgeries.
I said this the last time a similar discussion came up. What is bizarre about this is that this is not part of Judaeo-Christian tradition but comes from the Greek concept of natural law. In the medieval world, Aristotle was considered to have a near infallible understanding of the physical world. Aristotle analyzed physical processes and the “laws” which governed them in terms of their ends. Medieval theologians and scholars faced a dilemma. They wanted to make Aristotleian knowledge available in the West, but to do this they needed the sanction of the Church. So in the 13th century, philosopher theologians like Albertus Magnus and Thomas Aquinas set about to “christianize” Aristotle and in a more general sense Greek thought and so make it acceptable to the Church. In this way, they legitimized Greek ideas and conceptions about the world. One of these and one of the most important was natural law, i.e. viewing the world in terms of the ends of processes and defining these as goals. So the physical end of sex is reproduction. Anything that interfered with or deviated from this would be a violation of natural law, and with the Christian overlay, a sin.
I doubt it would make much difference to conservative Christians that there beliefs are, in fact, not Christian in origin, people will believe what they believe, but as someone who is not religious the cognitive dissonance is deafening.
Oversight Hearing on Sexual Assault in the Military
On Thursday, the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs will conduct an oversight hearing into the current status of sexual response and prevention within the U.S. military. This hearing seeks to ensure that the Department of Defense has adequate policies and oversight mechanisms in place to prevent, treat, and punish sexual assaults.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am in room 2154 of the Rayburn House Office Building and is open to the public.
I agree — we’ve evolved, but that’s essentially from whence we we came.
and don’t forget the Bonobos.
i don’t buy that explanation in this case (not saying i don’t think there’s lots to be learned from studying evolutionary pressures and adaptation).
for example, why the focus on insisting that a fertilized egg is a human being?
How can we forget bonobos? We have one ruling our country.
thanks for the link!
McCain is a doddering old man who has always acted as if women were merely accessories or tools rather than partners.
Don’t turn your back on this old fart; the lack of comprehension and preparedness we see in the featured video is the real John McCain, and that is an enormous threat to our health and safety.
McCain’s going to have to be heavily sedated and firmly wired to get through any debates. It would be great to see him lost and talking back to those feeding him responses.
Ha! Well, your version is a lot less, um, sweaty than mine! I particularly like the way that the judeochristian mythology is so obviously derivative if you study ancient literature at all. To me it is a lot more interesting that humans found certain themes to be so repeatable that they stick to them through so many generations and iterations, I find it a lot more interesting to look for the germ of “truth” such as it may be found in that, but instead we end up arguing the literalness of “divine” word with the fundies.
As you also said above, religious people in general “can’t think through the inherent contradictions between their religious views and the physical universe they live in.”
Christy’s up!
Republicans In Disarray…Look Over There, It’s Karl Rove!

I was mostly thinking of it from the angle of the urge to dominate…and that definition is intellectualizing the dominance over procreation.
His devotees will spin it as Obama being a smart ass and elitist,
thank you for the link.
sorry to see Lavena Johnson’s family will not be there – although I see Armed Svcs Comm is mulling an investigation. Chairman Skelton was her congressman.
and speaking of the lower primates – watch McHenry and Westmoreland fluff the Army and contractors
thanks, very interesting. i was thinking only about the older purity and property laws in the torah and new testament. this adds another dimension to consider.
i definitely buy the urge to dominate, esp the natural world.
Recalling recent statistics that point out that married women tend to move towards conservatism vs. the far stronger support among single women for Democrats, I truly believe that deep in the bowels of some rightie think tank(s) the notion was hatched that to increase the possibility of pregnancy, unwanted or not, will help Repugs statistically. Which led to this attempted change to HHS regulations.
Believe it…
Oh, I don’t doubt that many conservatives want to punish women for having sex, but that’s a sub text here.
