And then, it occurred to me.
All those BBQs and tasty Sweet Talk Express snacks for the press were designed to buy McCain whatever he wanted…with someone else’s money, natch. This isn’t about earning something, it’s about buying it because it is McCain’s right to get whatever he wants when he wants it. Or he whines.
In short: he’s the Francis candidate.
The internal grumbling from the GOP stalwarts and from within his own campaign has begun, as the "I know you are, but what am I?" retort wears incredibly thin on the American public. More importantly for McCain whose entire strategery depends on playing to his base, the press has been laughing at him.
And, inadvertently, that mockery has contained some nuggets of truth:
"…McCain is not at his best when he is being overly partisan and negative."
In other words, his inner asshole seeps out from beneath the public veneer, and we can’t have that, now can we?
But, in GOP world, where high power brings big money for consultants and politicos alike, failure means you either pass the buck or get drummed out on a rail. So, let the finger-pointing begin!
As Election Day nears, McCain’s campaign is adopting the aggressive, take-no-prisoners style of Karl Rove, the GOP operative who engineered victories for President Bush. The campaign continued the attack Wednesday with a sarcastic television ad deriding Obama as a "celebrity," part of an intensifying effort to cast him as an elitist….
McCain, who was most comfortable as an underdog in the unscripted environment of the New Hampshire primary, makes his advisers cringe as he delivers the attack line — and then keeps talking. In that respect, he is no Bush, his handlers say….
"It’s the candidate," said one GOP strategist with close ties to the campaign, who added that efforts to identify a theme for each week quickly unravel as McCain veers off message in his public comments….
So, let’s see if I have this straight: McCain’s Maverick persona, which they tout nonstop as if it were true, is a campaign liability, and if he loses it isn’t his staff’s fault, but his own for being Mavericky. Meanwhile, they are bitching because McCain is stubborn and refuses to listen to advice, or too dense to fully understand said messaging advice. But they’d like us to vote for the stubborn and/or dense man to be the leader of the free world.
Oh, and, if McCain doesn’t get his way, he gets testy…which the press normally pretends not to see, but it will start seeping out at live events so we should all prepare for the horror. A man who has to campaign in Arizona, because he’s falling behind Obama in fundraising there and can’t even count on carrying it in November. Does that about cover it?
And I haven’t even gotten to the massive corruption baggage the GOP is carrying around at the moment.
Yep. the Francis candidate — "I know you are, but what am I?" I’d like to know which John McCain we’ll be getting today, too. Any guesses?
(YouTube — the "I know you are, but what am I?" scene from PeeWee’s Big Adventure. Just call this my AdNags headline of the day…)

About Firedoglake
Zed! Hey Christy
Morning karnak — aahhhhhhh, coffee is good. How are things with you this morning?
John McCain doesn’t stand for anything except “John McCain for President.”
Stab you in the back? Yep, just like George Bush.
Profits before people? Yep, just like George Bush.
Party before Nation? Yep, just like George Bush.
“I’m the Commander Guy.”? “I’m the President! I’m the President! I’m the President!”? Yep, just like George Bush.
He should just change his campaign slogan to “It’s my turn, damn it!“
Hi Christy!
…..eeeeewwwwwwwww!
Not enuf coffee yet for that!
Morning Christy,
delicious post, and thanks for the peeWee.
I thought everyone would get a kick out of the Pee-Wee YouTube. And the guy who plays Francis in the movie totally reminds me of Karl Rove…hehehehe
Yeah, sorry about that. *g*
That’s the part that keeps reminding me of Bob Dole. But it is very Bushie, isn’t it — “I want it, why aren’t you giving it to me, now?!?”
McCain’s candidacy has been largely propped up by the media. Without that support, it would already have collapsed. Even with it, his campaign is teetering on the edge of total incoherence and self-parody.
Good, but coffee certainly helps. As for McCain, the meltdown can’t happen soon enough for me. Watching the Republican machine disintegrate is most satisfying, and well deserved.
If McCain wanted to avoid being charged with racist undertones in his celebrity ad against Obama, he could have gone with male celebrities: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, or Will Smith. But his campaign manager, who did the “Call me” bimbo ad against Harold Ford (the only ad people now remember), knew that having blond women in the ad was a sure-fire ticket to free media play. Watch that ad play all day today on the cable shows. The point of the ad is to get out the vote for those otherwise too lazy to vote except if a black man is running against a white man.
McCain is acting as if he thinks he’s running for Chairman of the Social Events Committee at the country club.
Sounds like something Jeb might be saying to his parents along with “You let George ruin things for me again!”.
It is such a dog whistle miscegination ad, isn’t it? Sad.
Did you ever see the episode of Frasier when he and Niles are both running to be chair of their wine tasting club? McCain completely reminds me of that episode lately…
“inner asshole”, rotfl! There seems to be a lot of that going around these days between the R’s & the media flapping mouths.
Sometimes you can tell when someone pretty much knows they’ve already lost by how they act. McGrumpy is getting desperate, no doubt. I still have suspicions the White House will force him to step down before the election and let someone else run.
Is it bad karma to hope that when McCain’s cheese finally slips completely off his cracker and he explodes into a fullblown toddler tantrum hissy fit, it happens in a public venue where he’s surrounded by press?
I love that Peewee herman movie. I wanted a PeeWee Herman dolls badly. I’ve seen them sold at one of those dusty NYC lower manhattan broadway “junk sales”, but none of them in pristine condition. *sigh*
I think there should be a peewee herman doll but with McCain’s face. That would be rad!
I’d hope for a live speech with a lime jello background, but I think they learned their lesson on the cottage cheese jello salad look…
that’s good
I, too, am beginning to wonder if he’ll make it to the Convention as the nominee. Who knows, mebbe the Republicans will end up with Ron Paul.
Here’s an interesting discussion of McCain’s foreign policy.
http://antiwar.com/radio/2008/07/30/fred-kaplan-2/
Obama has already run an ad debunking the celebrity ad. Don’t be distracted would sum it up, but regardless, teh blondes, totally in MSM play all day.
The synopsis of the movie could be used for the new Bush movie: Eccentric man-child George W. Bush embarks on the big adventure of his life across the US mainland.
And after the rethug convention
Does Scott Horton ever speak with women?
Morning Christy.
Meanwhile, they are bitching because McCain is stubborn and refuses to listen to advice, or too dense to fully understand said messaging advice.
Taking and acting upon advice is restricted to Tuesdays and Thursdays. It’s all those other days which are causing the problems. Well – that, and the little problem of Johnny’s memory.
As the campaign continues, I’m waiting for the point at which McLame contradicts his own position within a single day. Then as time passes, I’m expecting flip-flops within a single interview. And, in the final days, I look for JohnnyMac to contradict himself within a single sentence.
Now *that* would be Mavericky.
Funny. Can’t remember any.
I can vouch for the fact that he does — I’ve spoken with him on the phone several times. *g* DOn’t know about the radio show, though…
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs,
from Christy’s “Designed to buy McCain” link
if you have read Cliff, Matt Welch, or the Media Matters guys on this, you learn they don’t pass these hours in wonky discussions of policy or current events – oh no, lots of towel snapping, catty Senate gossip, and the obligatory sophmoric humor –
IOW, the cover they provide him springs from their own vanity – that the Big Man In Senate would deign to spend time with them - coulda sworn I saw David Gregory carrying his books for him.
diiiis-gusting !
“Senator Obama, I must say that I disagree with you on this issue.”
“And, my friend, I also disagree with *me* on this issue.”
McCain is like Reagan in his later days without any ability to be charming.
As I noted in epu-ville a couple threads up, McCain’s lookin’ all Sunset Boulevard-y these days.
Was David dancin’?
why. . .whatever do you mean ?
The Republics could hire a Led Zepplin tribute band to play “Dazed and Confused” at their convention.
I’m thinking Hall and Oates doing Out of Touch. You know, I think there’s a post to be done on that… hehehehehe
OMG, this post needs to have a huge spew alert up top.
“…the morning prune stylings of Hard Hat Fred Thompson.”
Thanks, Christy, that’ll keep me laughing through November!
OT – yesterday i listened a bit to part 1 of this hearing (on the non-governmental perspective). c-span is covering part 2 today:
the bit i heard yesterday was disturbing – it was as if the SCOTUS had not ruled in Boumediene, or had ruled wrongly and it was now up to congress to “fix” it as congress has done with FISA and the MCA.
My favorite line was: “I know how to win wars. I know how to win wars!”
The only thing he knows demonstrably and verifiably is how to get himself captured and held as a POW. I mean no disrespect to others who have served honorably, but this statement seems really over the top to me, and I’m with Chris Matthews when he said, “What wars has he won!”
McSame keeps saying he knows how to do things, like the economy, etc., but he says nothing that would give his statements any credibility. It’s all just “trust me!” I have zero patience for him.
McCain graduated in 1958 so he may be partial to the Coasters, the Platters, etc. I think they’re still around and, if they still have any, the original members probably look younger than McCain.
Well, I mean honestly — when you look at that pix of Thompson in that sad, green hard hat, doesn’t that look on his face say he missed his daily prunes?
Johnny got a little testy with Stephanopolous last Sunday. That was fun…thought he might lose it.

Don’t stick a pin in him or you will let out all of the air
Mc Cain is like one of an old co-worker whose attitude is: ” I deserve to be the guy in charge ’cause I put in the time.”
Only problem is that the “time” he put in was a narrative of fuckups and buck-passing.
I like the idea from an earlier thread that we take the Blazing Saddles approach and respond with this this video to the blonde bimbo ad. Oh never mind, sarcasm is lost on Repugs.
Seems to me McCain 08 is a poster of Krusty pasted on the Rove/bush machine. But I’m not sure the massive ego of the lightly wrapped Krusty can or will put up with this. I expect a meltdown.
Oh and the report from KO that the campaign cautioned that McCain does not necessarily speak for McCain was “special”.
“his inner asshole seeps out from beneath the public veneer”
As the days pass, the inner and outer Johnnies are merging into a very confused singularity. It seems these days that MSM and McCain’s virulent new staff have created a distinctly two-headed (assed?) McChimera that they are having a hell of a time controlling, whenever it is under public scrutiny.
Bush was just plain stupid, and his speech writers were no doubt beside themselves whenever he abused their well-framed words on the podium. But McCain’s repeated morphing between the maverick and the machine is like some character out of “The Matrix” trying to refocus against it’s own will.
The entire campaign has been an exercise in futility. From his near-fatal pre-presumptive nominee crash, to his constant confusion with geography and issues, to his inability to follow the creeps’ poison scripts, the marriage of McCain the Maverick and McCain the Rove puppet has created something that is not very appealing to reasonable people.
Like Janus, he speaks from two places. And it seems no one, least of all McCain, can control which orifice is flapping.

There’s the Stones’ Out of Time
Nice Post Christy. Something that I have noticed that shuts up a lot of the Wingnuts is this simple question: Why is it then that the same people who sold us George Bush are the same people so desperately working to elect John McCain?
That seems to throw the GOP’ers into an infinite loop. I have yet to get a respone. Of course you will never see this theme catch on in MSM. But it is effective.
Here’s one
http://antiwar.com/radio/2008/07/09/carah-ong-2/
it’s okay, but only after he is actually the nominee and not the presumed one.
Breaking: Bates backs Congress.

Miers, Bolton must testify
Harold Ford really bugged me yesterday on Race for the WH when he said he didn’t see any racism in that ad. Oh, really! No racism involved in juxtaposing Barack against Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. No racism in using Barack’s picture with a very dominant “more FOREIGN oil.” And there was no racism in the race Ford participated in either, I suppose. Like, racism didn’t effectively defeat him. Maybe that’s because he doesn’t know it when he sees it.
I heard him on Democracy Now once, so I think so. Why do you ask?
hi christy!
I posted this yesterday morning, a very disturbing experience;
my friends daughter had her wedding this past week and I went to be with all my old friends, most of them entirely democrat, some reagan democrats and some republicans but not many that would admit to it
my best friend has always been a democrat, has hated bush since day one, understands all the wrong that this president has done to this country, cannot say enough bad things about the man and is constantly talking to bush supporters about what this president has done to this country
yet he thinks me might vote for mccain, as do all my other “democratic” friends because they “don’t know what is going to happen to israel under obama and they are worried about him not leaving the church long before the pastor became public”
translation, they are bigots, though they will never admit that is their reason
the friend who has hated this president since day one gives me this;
“I know mccain has gone against bush many times and I need to see them in a debate before I decide”
we here at the lake live in a bubble, I would have never guessed any “democrat” would give ANY republican play what so ever, yet they do.
we live in a bubble and no matter what mccain does, they are finding exuses
we live in a bubble here at the lake
Did someone say prunes? That can only mean Zappa’s “Duke of Prunes”.
re: McCain theme song = Kenny Rogers – “I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in”
(Okay, so maybe it doesn’t fit perfectly – but at times he reminds me of someone who dropped way too many tablets in college..)
oh, ps, a job for Marcy but I thought I would be posting it here first;
rove does not use executive privilege to defy subpoena, he just defies it on his own behalf
HE JUST DEFIES SUBPOENA BECAUSE CONGRESS WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT
I DARE someone to show up at a McCain rally and hold up a sign that reads “HELLO FRANCES!!!”
I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU!!!
Woohoo! First penguin song* now this! Shaping up to be a good day!
*Opus cartoon from earlier thread comment
Right On! Rover’s next. I bet he tossed his cookies on hearing this ruling.
OK Pups it Time to Digg this fine Post from Christy!!
Wo Hoo it has started the third leg of the Government has reared it’s head and taken a stance on this out of control Administration!!!
Elaborate…He is going to be giving a soapbox speech at the Iowa State Fair next Friday and I just might… What is up with the Frances?
((perris))
commented on this phenomenon last week end – lots of folks are scratching their heads as to why longtime Bush bashing friends, neighbors and loved ones are suddenly considering McAint. so sorry you are one of them
Oooooh, tangent thought – anyone ever seen those “red vs blue” videos on youtube?
They take characters from “Halo” and add funny dialogue.
I’m thinking Frances dialogue with McCain’s image….
And Stephen Colbert even has a “green room challenge” going right now, a contest to see who can come up with a way to make John McCain interesting and turn it into a video.
Combine the two…
(Christy, what can I say, you bring out the twisted creativity in me *L*)
IrishJim – From Christy’s original post on this thread, and the video..
yo CBL2!
have always wondered, is there a cbl1?
This is in keeping with Mukasey’s speech at the America Enterprise Institute earlier this month calling on Congress to restrict detainee rights. This is the one that sparked Leahy to say it wasn’t ging to happen.
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpoi…..nators.php
Having been overruled in the courts, the Administration’s strategy, the David Addington strategy, is simply to act like Boumediene doesn’t exist until someone or something comes along and forces them to act otherwise.
I have said this for quite some time, that no court ruling means anything at all until congress uses it’s power, they must jail and impeach
otherwise the administration will continue to say;
“yea, I heard, so what?”
I’m not sure about Rove, but I’d bet Pelosi spewed when she got the news.
thanks for the link – i may try to give a listen to mukasey’s speech as i imagine the Rs on the house armed services committee will be reading it as their playbook.
perris – i guess it will be interesting to see what the response to judge bates’ ruling will be.
over at the wheel’s place there is this from mary;
to which I responded with a hearty;
HURRAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!
now we need to “git er done”
Well, you know that Rock ‘n’ Roll lifestyle and doing shows every night in a different town helps you stay young looking.
After all, look what it’s done for Keith Richards and Iggy Pop.
As a Republican client of mine (with whom I ocassionally engage in political arguments) put it: “there are 3 McCains: 2000 McCain, 2008 Primaries McCain and 2008 GE McCain – we never know which one will show up).
