If they weren't so venal-- and so adapt at taking very good care of themselves-- you might feel sorry for Republican members of Congress. Here they have been spending all month worrying if voters are going to connect the dots between massive campaign "contributions" from Big Oil (almost a quarter billion dollars since 1990-- 75% of it to Republicans, most of the rest to the Republican wing of the Democratic Party) and the policies that brought on, at least in part, the high gasoline prices.
But with the threat still looming that the Democrats might actually expose them by helping voters connect those dots, suddenly there's a new challenge facing them: massive donations of VECO bribes that Stevens spread around the Republican caucus. So far none only a few of the GOP senators who took the tainted money have agreed to give it back.
And Stevens has been quite the little money launderer. He's donated a cool $725,000 directly to the NRSC so they'd be able to pay for their little operations, like stealing the 2002 New Hampshire Senate race for John Sununu. But he's also been handing out VECO and other tainted funds all across the corrupt party. This year alone some of the beneficiaries of Stevens' shady Northern Lights PAC have included:
Lamar Alexander (R-TN- $10,000)
John Barrasso (R-WY- $10,000)
Saxby Chambliss (R-GA- $10,000)
Norm Coleman (R-MN- $10,000)
Susan Collins (R-ME- $10,000)
John Cornyn (R-TX- $5,000)
Elizabeth Dole (R-NC- $10,000)
James Inhofe (R-OK- $9,000)
Mitch McConnell (R-KY- $7,500)
Pat Roberts (R-KS- $10,000) + $5,000 more to Roberts' Preserving America's Traditions PAC
Gordon Smith (R-OR- $10,000)
John Sununu (R-NH- $10,000)
Roger Wicker (R-MS- $5,000)
Don Young (R-AK- $10,000)
Over the years, Stevens has redistributed immense sums of money-- bribes-- to Republicans. Now they don't want to give the money back, of course. Yesterday, Tom Allen's campaign let Maine newspapers know that $20,000 has gone into Susan Collins' coffers, although she kicked back $5,000 to Stevens. That seems to be a pattern with him. He gives some of his ill-gotten gains to other Republicans and then they give part of it back to him. In guess this is perfectly acceptable in Washington, where these crooks make their own incredibly lax rules.
Yesterday afternoon Jeff Merkley pointed out that over the years Stevens has doled out $39,000 to Gordon Smith. Merkley isn't asking Smith to return the tainted money to Stevens (who needs it for his legal defense team); he's asking him "to donate the money to charities to help provide health insurance to Oregon children." Smith refused at first but with Merkley pounding him he finally agreed to turn over a small portion of the tainted dough. Meanwhile Smith has taken more than $300,000 in campaign contributions from oil and gas interests, while delivering $18 billion in tax giveaways for oil companies and opposing measures to end excessive speculation on oil prices. I doubt he'll give any of that back.
And what about Collins, Sununu, Cornyn, Coleman and the rest of the crooks? Yesterday Jim Slattery pointed out that Stevens and his crooked PAC "donated $19,785 to Kansas Senator Pat Roberts. In 2005, Roberts voted in favor of Steven's wasteful $230 million 'Bridge to Nowhere' in Alaska.
"This is precisely the reason why so many people are sick and tired of old Washington politics," Slattery said. "After 40 years in Washington, Roberts is willing to take money from a friend and then vote in favor of that friend's pet project.
"Kansans deserve better," Slattery said. "Kansans deserve a senator who will put their needs ahead of those in Alaska."
Slattery called for Roberts to donate the money to charity.
"As chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee, Roberts should immediately donate an amount equal to the contributions he received from Stevens to a local charity."
Roberts has refused to give up a dime. Ditto for James Inhofe, who has also been part of this money laundering scheme and won't divest himself of any of it.

So, Howie, that news was not supposed to get out!
Indict them all. Surely, they knew where the money was coming from.
Now there’s an idea… indict them all- and start from scratch!
Latest article in the newsbox says McConnell’s contributions were higher, at $20,000.
We need campaign finance reform. I don’t condone bribes on any level, but if it costs a lot of money to get elected and congress is spending more and more time trying to get re-elected instead of doing the country’s business, then we need legislation to help them get the money the honest way.
We need to limit contributions from individuals (set a higher limit and include corporations in that limitation).
They need money to campaign, we haven’t given it to them, and we wonder why they are always looking for money and sometimes fall prey to the people who give it to them.
How cheaply they are bought out.
How cheaply were sold out
Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that there is gambling going on here!
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Renault: Oh, thank you very much.
No morals, no decency, no honor. Spouting off about love of country, support the troops, don’t burn the flag and they are undermining every principle we ever had in this country. I am delighted that this has all come out in the open - pure and simple old bribery.
And ALL Repubs.
What I want to know is if some of that largesse went to Teddy’s BFF Sen. Inouye (D!-HI).
Bob in HI
(Except for a congressman in New Orleans.)
Doing Gods work is difficult
And very expensive apparently. :)
To be honest, while it would be nice to recover whatever part can be recovered, I don’t see where it makes much difference. It was the willingness of those in high positions to take the bribes to begin with that counts.
This sounds like yet another story that will go underreported while the MSM reports and comments endlessly on Obama’s qualifications to be President. The McCain campaign says he doesn’t have the experience. Too bad that no one asks McCain what is the experience he has that qualifies him. I just don’t see any, really. He was in the Navy. He was a POW. He was a Senator. He picked a wealthy woman as his second wife. He was one of the Keating Five. Which parts make him qualified?
How does being old make someone Presidential?
Besides he can’t remember what he’s learned
Jeff Merkley was fast with his call for Smith to return the Stevens bribe money. He needs national support on this — why hasn’t Harry Reid taken a stand, or Chuck Schumer?
I know Democrats are guilty of following this Leadership PAC pass-around-the-cash system, but surely they don’t condone including bribes in campaign funds? We need to hear our Senate Democrats call for the return of all Stevens money. The challengers shouldn’t be out there on their own.
And it isn’t just this cycle, either. Money collected during the period covered by the indictment counts.
Or what he said yesterday!

I need to speak with Jane and Christy about a terrific project, can anyone email me one of their phone numbers? Rather not do it in email because what I can say briefly will take a long time to write. jsandero at gee mail dot com
Anyone???
I don’t think they’d need nearly as much money if they didn’t have to pay such high prices for their air time on radio and TV. Those airwaves belong to all of us. Why can’t we insist on stations donating more public service ads to each candidate in political campaigns. We should be able to make campaigning less expensive than to give higher limits to rich people to buy their way into the candidate’s favor and give them a more favorable point of view for the rich man’s causes. It’s utterly ridiculous the amounts of money that being spent to influence our votes. Has the figure hit a billion on each side yet? There’s got to be a better way.
Sander, I’m sorry but we don’t give out those phone numbers, hope you understand.
Fine but there is some urgency here.
How about I email MY telephone number and someone can call me?

Sometimes I find that writing down an idea helps me to make it much clearer than I ever could in a conversation. Focuses the mind, etc.
See ‘about us’ in tool box
In fact, I can relay this to any of the FDL management who can pass it along to Jane and Christy… but since they are the principals here I think it would be their decision ultimately.
I love the concept that some of the Stevens bribes that reached Liddy Dole
don’t “exist anymore.” It’s a novel accounting concept, I must say.
Teddy this isn’t a tip. and it’s not something for this site per se.. but something for our cause, our country and so forth and I think these gals would be able to help and have the right info and contacts and so forth.
Read as: She done p*ss’d it away and is having serious fund raising problems at this point.
If you’re taking from all over the place, you don’t need a lot from any one place.
Then too, there’s the idea that these payments are just for maintenance, keeping tabs on the forces, etc.
I had to read that twice to make sure I understood. I stole the cake and ate it; therefore, I didn’t steal it.
works for me /s
It’s a hell of a return on investment. Twenty grand gets an oil company billions.
And Christy upstairs with some more Ted-ness
And I heard the analysis this morning, because of the Stevens’ largess and big pockets, the people of Alaska enjoy per person the biggest % of federal $$ than any other of our states.
This will impact Senate races:

Merkley released this statement today hitting Smith hard for his support of Stevens bridge to nowhere and drilling in ANWR:
It’s also worth noting that Smith’s PAC Impact America gave Stevens $10,000.
Whoops…forgot my disclosure! I am the netroots director for Oregon Senate candidate Jeff Merkley.
It appeared to me the Senate Republicans were willing to negotiate with the Democrats, but then today they went haywire and said “NO” to everything, including the Paul Wellstone Mental Health Parity Act.
KKKarl’s been recommended for a contempt charge.
TTTed’s been indicted.
Dubya signed the Mortgage Aid act in a closet, so nobody would notice.
McCain has lied and even Ms. Woodruff of PBS news reported it.
FDL now reports on the money-go-round in this post.
They’ve gone off the rails. What should we do to help our dear ailing friends?
I don’t know why they chose not to continue to compromise and pass legislation, but if they can’t find a way to straighten-up and fly right, then they oughta be booted from Congress altogether. They can’t be happy that ‘dear leader’ has (perhaps) pushed them into this group suicide position. But, if that’s what they want, then we should do our best to replace every one of ‘em with a Democrat who will legislate.
I’m not really in favor of that kind of thing. I think American Republicans need Republican politicians to properly represent their interests and views. I also oppose the idea that “they” had complete control for a while and now it’s our “turn” to have complete power. That’s not what our system is about. I oppose that kind of manufactured outcome.
We need to convince Congressional Republicans it’s in their best interest to do the right thing and not hang out with the Bushie gang. How can we do that if they now believe that even losing massively won’t bother them so much?
I don’t see any choice. If they want to lose massively, then we should help them achieve their goal. Digg this post and let the world know the Republicans in Congress are just the employees of the oil companies and don’t give a hoot about Americans and our difficulties paying for $4/gallon gasoline and other things affected by oil prices. It’s the least we can do for our ‘dear dear friends’ in Congress.
What I want to know is how soon we can dump that crook [Inoye].
Al Franken went up about noon today with a radio ad on Coleman’s take, which not only included 20 thousand (apparently $10,000 twice over) but Coleman also received three Fishing Trips in Alaska, valued at $6,000 each. Said Fishing Trips were with the top Oil and Gas Lobbyists.
Coleman apparently cannot undo his Fishing, but has now announced a profound interest in Children’s Cancer Research, and they will be getting his Stevens cash.
Since Minnesota has plenty of lakes, and most of them have assorted fish, one has to wonder why Coleman had to go to Alaska to do his fishing. I see many possibilities in following that line of investigation.
So, is it true Diane Benson’s primary opponent Ethan Berkowitz takes money from Veco (as well as Fox News executives, Henry Kissinger’s business partner, and Rahm Emanuel?
Susan Collins? Who woulda thunka it? She looks so innocent. Kinda like that sweet white-haired lady Nancy Johnson (
