McSame’s promise to run an honorable campaign is holding up about as well as his wedding vows to his first wife.
His new campaign video can be roughly translated as "Obama is a girly weak vapid silly ditzy airhead, who likes to go shopping and do drugs and party and make sex videos and get sent to prison. Oh, and he won’t drill for oil and will raise your taxes." Or something like that.
But it’s hard for me to get riled up about this spot because it’s just so lame. It feels like someone in the McSame campaign is trying ever so desperately to imitate big bad Lee Atwater and they just can’t quite get it right. And they’re obviously too old and out of it over there to realize that Britney/Paris jokes are about 4 years out of date.
But these are the same media geniuses who put McSame in front of that schnitzelhaus in Akron or wherever the hell it was, so at least their tone-deafness is consistent.
It’s not hard hitting. It’s not edgy. It’s not "controversial." It just sucks.

Here’s the big problem they don’t realize they have: all of these “hate Obama” ads are full of images, and great images, of Obama! As was proved during the Reagan election cycle, the fact is that people don’t listen to the words, they look at the images. These ads are all good for Obama.
McF*ck-off
Anybody else notice the large, linear black object in the background?
Just saying.
what an asshole
oy!
In the link, check out the first comment from “Republican voting Democrat in November (Sent Wednesday, July 30, 2008 11:36 AM)”
If that’s any indication of the effectiveness of McCain’s marketing, then he is truly fucked.
McSuck
Blue uses the correct word for this, “lame.” I think many Republicans are becoming embarrassed by these silly ads. They used to try and make Americans scared of terrorists. Now we’re supposed to be scared of Paris and Brittney?
McLame, more of the same.
Was that first large, linear black object in the background the leaning tower of Pisa?
If this weren’t FDL, I’d look up the sources. Is Mccaint that desperate? or did he look up too many skirts in his daydreams to tell the difference.
I tell you, senile. At this point, it’s his only defense. Poor Cindy. No, really. After 4 hrs, u have to worry, i hear tell. *Smacks self in the face*
Please forget i ever said anything. I plead senility too, and this is all a bad dream.
pizza with sprinkles
Obama “doesn’t *do* ‘leaning’”.
periscope?
Tryin to suggest that Obama bangs white girls I believe….as used successfully in the Ford Campaign….
same old shit- different candidate.
at least he doesn’t lurch at random, like some other camplainters.
Don’t tell them, but that ad’s great for Obama.
Victory Column in Tiergarten Park, Berlin.
Unless it was PhotoShopped per KR’s instructions.
The images are completely beside the point. The immediate audience for this ad is not voters. Not many of them will see the ad. The ad will not run much at all. The purpose of the ad is to provide talking points to the media. Our TV screens will now be filled with pundits arguing over whether Obama is or isn’t like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Mission accomplished.
McCain is as off base with this ad as is his geography concerning “Iraq/ Afghan border. McCain is “ignorant” if he thinks people are really “this stupid.” Then again for the sake of America, I hope people are not this stupid, gullible, uniformed and brainwashed by the “corporate guy.” Maverick my ass……….
This election will be about race and age–
Digg this post for Blue Texan… He has honest John dead to rights on this one!! Mc Pain will do what ever he can to get elected… I think he will also continue to flaunt the election laws he so magnanimously flouted to have enacted… “It’s good enough for everyone else” BUT BUT not for me!
Paris Hilton is famous for her sex tape leaking onto the internet. McCain’s media marketing geniuses better not get any ideas.
Btw what has happened to the ” # new comments posted” that usually appears above the response box when responses are posted. We have no way of knowing if comments/responses have been made/posted unless one hits the browser’s refresh button?
Did McCain do a signing statement on those laws – sort of like preparation
next photo op for McFlacid: Viagra Falls
this stuff works – it has always worked — all McCain has to offer is racism and fear — and he has the media on his side pumping out the synonyms for ‘uppity’ day and night — and seriously discussing ‘arrogance’ after clipping quotes out of context.
be afraid. be afraid of the black man. THAT is the entire lame McCain campaign — and since the press has always been willing to give McCain the ‘character candidate’ a pass — it may work again
imagine if a Democratic presidential candidate’s wife stole drugs from her charity to feed her habit? imagine if a Democrat had dumped his wife and married the bimbo he was committing adultery with (or should one note, one of the many bimbos, but the rich one)?
McCain has nothing — he has never been a smart man. he has never led anything. he is bone ignorant about the world and about such domestic issues as the economy and education. he has NOTHING. so the campaign will be about slurs, and fears and racism. He has nothing else.
If Obama doesn’t start unleashing his team on this — it will work.
McCain hired the same guys who did the “call me” ad against Harold Ford, right?
Same playbook.
Only 50% of the voters are that stupid. They are the sheeple, and have just about as much smarts as sheep do. Meanwhile, the wolf who pretended to be a sheepdog for the past 8 years, is trying to make a place for his replacement-McCain-but does not seem to be doing a very good job. Will the sheeple wake up? Will The Sheep Look Up?-a sci fi book that I remember reading about 30 years ago, it was quite prophetic, I think that Brian Aldiss was the author-it was about 30 years ago tho- One would hope so, but it remains doubtful.
Don’t tell them, but that ad’s great for Obama.
Agree. The McLame campaign may have that “Rove Spirit”, but they’re obviously still working on the “Rove Action-Plan, Subtleties, and Various, Nefarious Odds-N-Ends”.
As far as we know, Obama wears underwear in public. We know those lovely ladies in the ad don’t, and it’s likely McSame doesn’t either, or let’s just say it Depends on the situation for him.
Plus, McSame is melanin-deficient and was a party animal screw-up growing up, so McSame has much more in common with those ladies. Not to mention McSame’s blogging daughter seems like a Britney wanna-be…have you seen her “reports” from the campaign trail…yeesh.
McCain’s not having a good week. The Wall Street Journal editorial board caught him lying. Twice. It doesn’t get much lower than that.
Still, as the WSJ observed, McCain’s still in this race, where by rights he should already out of it. I’m afraid H.L. Mencken was right. The Republicans sure don’t appear to be going broke.
Here’s another example of anti-Obama idiocy.
Obama needs to strike back:
“Look- I have a REALLY small dick and I DON’T want to steal any white guy’s woman”
Take it your not on Obama’s committee – thank goodness
Terry Nelson. his form employs Chris LaCivita – producer of Swiftboat ads
Nelson was also DeLay bagman in the TRMPAC money laundering
McCain hired Nelson 10/06
Terry’s getting old.
I hope Obama never gives a speech in front of Old Faithful.
http://blogs.venturacountystar…..ithful.jpg
They’d really have a field day with that one…
Photoshop can make it happen
I have been hyperventilating without you guys, today…
As I tell my Repub husband, if you guys can’t scare them to death or steal them, you can’t win them.
More H.L. Mencken:
It is inaccurate to say that I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office.
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
All men are frauds. The only difference between them is that some admit it. I myself deny it.
I think I woulda liked that guy.
Great story over at Pollster.com concerning Obama’s failure to go negative against McBush…..Their argument is that he may be making a fatal mistake in that his best strategy is to connect McBush with Bush- and that the opportunity to do that becomes dimmer after Labor Day…
I’m surprised that Obama just keeps taking it and doesn’t dish any back..McBush is very vulnerable.
Imagine the (rightful) media uproar if Hillary Clinton had run these ads against Obama.
I guess it’s well within what’s expected of a Republican though, so no harm no foul.
Just switched from MSNBC to CNN to the jazz music channel because the Vapid Vapors newsreaders were punditizing on this new celebutaunt ad.
Sorry BBQ media, you’re going to have to conduct your enable our BFF John campaign without me….
McBush is goin WAY over the line and getting a little flack for doing it- but it may be keeping him in the race.
Someone in the McBush campaign has NOT read Lakeoff’s book …”Don’t think of an elephant”….
They evoke the very image they don’t want to……
While not as blatant as the “Call me” ad against Harold Ford, this McCain ad is likely just the first step in a series of ever increasingly racists ads against Obama. It’s still early in the election cycle. No one should doubt the effectiveness of such ads. Harold Ford was leading by about 5 points in the 2006 senate race in TN before the ad, and dropped to 5 points behind in October after the ad. He ended up losing by just 3 points.
The purpose of these ads is to coax the racist knuckle-draggers out to vote.
Christy and others have mentioned that because of some on-going problems, some of the functions such as the New Comment and New Post notifications are currently disabled.
Which means we’ve just taken a trip back to the future and how things used to be before we got spoiled by the new technology.
New comments show up if you enter a new comment or do a hard refresh.
McBush may not actually be putting much money into running these ads. They’re so over the top that the media runs em for free on the news shows– as a public service apparently- and then goes “tsk tsk”
Yeah, though they kinda ruined the fear/racism thing by pivoting clumsily into taxes and oil drilling.
It’s just a mess. They can’t even do race baiting right.
The theme of Obama ads should be:
“The maverick grows a bush”
graphic shows McCain’s features morphing into Bush’s as the narration outlines his flip flops into Bushian orthodoxy- including tax cuts for the rich- torture, etc.
“John McCain- is there NOTHING he won’t do to get elected?”
More Mencken:
The worst government is often the most moral. One composed of cynics is often very tolerant and humane. But when fanatics are on top there is no limit to oppression.
Whenever you hear a man speak of his love for his country, it is a sign that he expects to be paid for it.
Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.
anyone check to see if they are darkening him via photoshop on this ad?
from Blue Texan’s link -
I think it’s just well aimed smoke up Chuck Todd’s very expensive, beautifully pleated skirt – I’ll believe it when I see it
I’m surprised that Obama just keeps taking it and doesn’t dish any back..McBush is very vulnerable.
One word:
Debates.
Best not to wait until the debates- the time to define McBush is NOW.
Obama is being forced to play defense and McBush keeps dishin out lies with impunity….
If Obama doesn’t make his start defending himself, say hello to President McCain.
Obama is fighting back on his website. He’ll let his VP defend him and avoid muddying himself until the debates
Certainly McSame won’t be doing any photo ops in front of Old Faithful. Only one half of the name applies to McSame.
He won’t have an active veep candidate until after the convention- it’s not so much a matter of defending- it’s a matter of attacking- if you don’t throw any punches- you allow your opponent to stalk you and score points at will.
Could call it old faithfull and old unfaithfull
I think it’s just well aimed smoke up Chuck Todd’s very expensive, beautifully pleated skirt
I started out liking Chuckie T. At least up to the point when it became apparent that Chuckie *needs* this race to appear competitive, and the candidates of equal value and worth.
His job, and relevance, depend on it.
Not technically able to do that check myself.
Related, though, is the John Marshal at TPM has reported that McCain hired the person who did the “Call me” ad against Harold Ford. That person is Terry Nelson who is McCain’s campaign manager, Like Obama, Ford is light-skinned and good-looking but was single at the time. The time-tested feature of these ads is that they get wide, free airplay on the cable news shows. McCain is deep down in the gutter now, and the race has barely started.
Need shots of McCain in front of a decrepit old factory- with the wind blowin through the empty shell- and an old chain swayin slowly- to and fro- to and fro.
Obama didn’t push back much against Clinton either, and it’s hard to argue with his results. The general presents much different dynamics though.
Repubes are extremely uncreative, and everything they are doing is extremely predictable. Certainly Team Obama has planned for these types of ads and have a strategy ready, and probably already in effect, to respond to the nonsense. Prez elections don’t really get started until the conventions, so both camps are still in testing mode.
“John McCain ran out of ideas in 1985″
His ad folks would include a subliminal noose hanging in background as well. You just know they would….
Watch the ad with the sound off. You see a smiling Obama in front of huge American flag waving crowds and very flattering images of him, then the words “Is he ready to Lead?”
From the visuals the answer to that question may very well be, “Yes.”
After more very flattering Obama images there is a shot of an old looking McCain gazing off to the right.
As has been said, most don’t remember the words, but the pictures. Given that this could have been an Obama ad.
I appreciate the McSame campaign for the help.
The time-tested feature of these ads is that they get wide, free airplay on the cable news shows.
I think it was Olbermann who pointed out that the “he hates the troops” ad had only aired about 5 times. BUT, on that day, on MSNBC alone, I must have seen it at least twenty or thirty times.
McLame’s ads attempting to cast Obama in a negative light end up redounding to Obama’s benefit.
The media, when attempting to show McLame’s ads as a farce, are giving huge amounts of free air-time and exposure to those anti-Obama ads.
Doesn’t anybody know how to play this game?
I agree, it’s another big weakness of the spot.
here ya go
another shot
His Maverilicious in front of FABART a soon to be shuttered factory in Youngstown –
pouring gasoline on the fire, in the same appearance he tried comparing the Rust Belt’s future with his once failing campaign – yep: HOPE
What ya do with a maverick who likes to play in the bushes is to give him just enough rope to trip himself up, all over the place. Then you jus’ sit on back and enjoy the show. That maverick will tangle himself up so miserably that pretty soon he’s gonna hog-tie himself and end up looking so foolish that even his handlers will be disgusted, ‘ceptin’ fer the rovin’ wannabees who will insist that the pathetic jackass in question is actually a noble steed whose sense of direction is second to none and that the other horse is pure cussed evil and likes to hang out with nambly- pambly sheep and goats of questionable character …
Don’t ya jus love polly-ticks?
I’m guessing that McCain is the paparazzi? Desperate, looking for the cheap shot, selling to the highest bidder?
I guess McCain is not listening to the generals anymore. Every general in history says that to win you have to occupy the high ground. He gave it up so early and so completely.
Ooh. That’ll boost his image.
Shit- those are PERFECT—wonder if there is matching video?
Has anyone here heard the verson of “Big Bad John” that Ed Shultz played on his program today? A link, perhaps? It was a hoot . . . with lyrics that even I can remember (after a few repetitions).
I don’t have a link and not sure if this is the version you mean but John Cornyn, R-TX did a version for his campaign intro at an R gathering earlier this summer. Rick Noriega, the Dem challenger (and Blue America candidate) took the Cornyn version and added some reality to it. I’d guess you can find that version at the Noriega web site.
Progressive Accountability has created a perfect comeback, showing who is really more like Britney:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPEV6twzxmE
“If you vote for McCain- ask for a discount- he’s last year’s model.
Jane’s a couple of flights up with a LiebeRat story
Gawd, this is freaking pathetic. But you can sure tell that McCain cleaned house and hired a Rove protege to run his campaign.
By trivializing the design of this ad I think you are missing an important point, which is that the operatives feel that the Primary election showed that part of America is more racist than sexist. This ad is sexist, and it should be immediately denounced as such.
The other thing I find disturbing is the sweeping idea of the Big Lie. This ad uses the big lie to connect Obama to oil prices, and so on. Everyone, including the media, needs to push back hard on the big lie, and call it what it is, not a falsehood, not dissembling, but the big lie. Even when Michael Moore referred to Bush’s statements as “whoppers”, everyone should have been on point and saying, this is a lie. Accept no substitutes.
Maybe someone already pointed this out. But isn’t McCain, the anti-celebrity, the one who appeared in Wedding Crashers or some such.
This ad is more pathetic than his previous ones. They are desperate. The average Joe won’t even buy this crap. If he were merely a celebrity there’s no way heads of state would be meeting him nor would he be drawing such crowds.
But what is truly hysterical is that BRITNEY IS an F**ing REPUBLICAN (or at least used to be).
Paris Hilton?
So McCain’s against blonde plasticized substance-abusing heiresses now?
Especially odd since Paris’s dad gave McCain a pile of money…
Thanks for the H.L. Mencken quotes, jayt. I especially like the last one. It certainly seems to be true these days.
