20 years ago, I stopped taking the kids to the mall anytime after October. They had Christmas before Halloween, etc. What a mixed message for little kids. Sheesh.
We brought the puppy home this afternoon. She was spayed and isn’t feeling very well. Wally the Best Dog Evah loves her. The cats don’t even care. For cats that translates into the dog must be a rock star.
One more before I shut it down…. post over at kos on holding the BushCo bad actors accountable with poll …… go throw in your vote…. Open Thread for Night Owls & Early Birds
miss new thread….. miss the show text…. BUT Thanks Suz…. I can get youtube to work….. with the disable/enable thingy…..
Yep. It is the same little doggie that I showed you guys the other day. I will take pics tomorrow. She is feeling bad right now cause she is post op. Keeps throwing up a little. I am sure she will feel better in a day or two. We decided to name her Kate but my daughter for some reason hates that name. Eleanor is good but would probably start to be Ellie and that sounds too much like Wally. Kate and Ariel (her name from before) are both names out of Shakespeare. Maybe we could go that way. What do ya’ll think?
Hi Pups just a quick hello:>) I did Digg Neuro’s Digg…
We have been seriously looking at a Solar system from Solarcity.com We just need to decide if there are any negatives to the system 11.1kw. With nothing down and at $330 a month. It would cut our PG&E bill down by way more than half… They do all the maintenance and make any repairs. They also guarantee performance or pay us the difference. Part of the installation is a new power panel, upgrade to 200 amp service and install a new meter that will go backwards, which of course would mean that PG&E would pay us for excess power.. After the 15 yr lease we can either upgrade, buyout, renew existing lease, or have them remove system free. If we ever decide to sell the house we can pass the lease onto the new owners.
Now I just have to have my lawyer make sure the lease and everything is just what it seems..
I love Kate. Good point about wanting her name to be nothing that sounded like Wally. I look forward to seeing pictures. Remember to keep the closet door closed so she won’t chew on your shoes!
At the 15 yrs point saving of more than $25k if we did nothing.. Seems hard to not go for, especially with the guarantee on performance.. Also turns out the Rep who came by to give the estimate is one of my good friends next door neighbor for the last 10yrs. My friends says he is a reliable person and very smart… he came from the investment world and decided he wanted to some good with his career… The only down side is we need to make decision soon as the Feds haven’t renewed the tax credits for solar and other alternative energy and the tax breaks go away at the end of the year:>)… Obstructionists Rethuglians.
Price for such a large system (more than twice normal, which I need) is 69k with tax and all the other fees required. But then no maintenance, guarantee or upgrades at the end. So seems better to lease than buy.
Speaking of Chaka Khan, not long ago I was lost in youtube and ran up on this one from 1974, in Central Park’s Wollman skating rink. I was at this concert with friends. We were sitting directly square to the stage, near the top of the amphitheater.
Rufus was just beginning to make it’s national splash, so they probably were not the headliner. Darned if I can remember who was without some prompting!
Smaller systems are cheaper … but we need the larger system to get the results we want and need. We have always used lots of juice… We also use electric heaters in winter on second floor as heating system was put in before second floor was added and all the computers I keep running including several servers..
Thanks Neuro:>) Good thing is we get very good sun on both of the roofs! Rep had a neat tool that uses GPS and fish eye device to calculate just how much sun we get..
Eleven kW is a pretty hefty system. That could run my house, I think, at any time but the dead of winter, and I have electric heat. Most of the year I’d be selling power to the power company. At least, I would if they bought it.
Dead of winter is when we have been paying the most
Cujo PG&E here is required by the state to buy back any excess power we generate… I did look at the reps bill and it showed them getting money back some months…
I just installed a new wireless keyboard and mouse. Fancy! I could actually program it for being left handed. No more falling on the floor while trying to type or use the mouse.
I have friends who live off the grid entirely.. wood heat, but it’s amazing what one solar panel about 4 ft square will do for them. It’s all they need. No washer or dryer, that’s about the only real sacrifice.
It’s the one that plays on the oldies stations, I think. There appear to be several other versions that someone’s recorded, but that’s the one that comes to my mind when you mention those lyrics.
I heard about those guys on the radio. It sounds really interesting. A good way for everybody to come out a head. They don’t have it yet in the Sac area.
That’s true here, too. Unfortunately, in the winter in the Northwest, there’s far less sun. It’s behind the clouds most of the time, and it’s only up for eight hours a day at the solstice. Solar sounds like a great thing for the Southwest and maybe some other areas that have lots of sunny days. Around here, it’s not the first thing that comes to mind.
But 11kW would handle just about anything here if I could get that much in winter, except having the heat running in most of the house at once, or the dryer.
Now, if I could put a windmill in my backyard, I’d be set.
only posted it twice cuz i was epu’d.
i was excited about it and wanted to make sure that everyone saw my ‘thank you’. that was the most important part of it.
see y’all later.
(and loo hoo, i tried to email you with the email you gave me, first two tries bounced back, third one lost in cyberspace i guess.must have written it down wrong.)
Down here in the bay area we gets lots of sun all year long and a solar collector will still generate power even when it is raining… As long as there is some light it will generate power just not as much..
Wind is good but who are you going to get to keep blowing on the wind mill when the wind stops blowing/s
mmmmmmm. Maybe it was a different company. Come to think of it they had a deal where they gave you power in exchange for the roof space. Any left over was sold to the grid. And it wasn’t a monthly fee. It was a small upfront cost. Either way it sounds better than what we are doing now.
I know I know… I shoulda worded that differently.. How ignorant is that?? Na that is rhetorical also How does he have daughters and a wife who stay with him?? I would be dead if I proposed something like that.. The women I know don’t want anyone telling them let alone a man telling them how or what to so about THEIR bodies… He is just another Reich wing nut job…
Mary here is their website http://www.solarcity.com/ So far I am impressed with them… I looked at many other companies and they have the best program.. Unfortunately it will change because of the Rethuglians blocking the legislation to renew the tax breaks… DRILL FOR OIL burn coal is all they want to do… you know make big $$’s for their rich buddies …oh and lower taxes even further for them and raise ours…
I thought the wording was fine, but unintentionally on point at least twice.
And in Chimpy’s sphere of influence, they have lots of secret doctors, all sworn to secrecy and all having taken Sara Taylor’s oath to the President. So they’re covered. The other wimmin – not so much.
Well this time I am really really going to snuggle with my sweetie… she just came home from the lake this afternoon after being gone since Sunday…. Nitey nite PUPS. Hope you all sleep well …
I’m watching Tim Kaine, Gov. VA, on Charlie Rose. I’ve seen people gag on his name on this site. I wonder why? He seems to be straight up. What am I missing?
I seem to remember he gave one of the least inspiring conter-State of the Union speeches ever. The usual DLC suspects wrote it for him, of course. That’s my only impression of him.
Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine made the following statement today regarding the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling about same sex marriages:
“Marriage between a man and a woman is the building block of the family and a keystone of our civil society. It has been so for centuries in societies around the world. I cannot agree with a court decision suddenly declaring that marriage must now be redefined to include unions between people of the same gender.
“Virginia defines marriage as being between a man and a woman and I strongly support that law. Regardless of the court ruling today in another state, I am confident that there is nothing in the Virginia or federal constitutions that would require Virginia to alter its longstanding policy about marriage.”
He sounds like a reasonable person. He is anti-death penalty and anti-abortion, but he says he upholds the law. He says he thinks most folks would wish for fewer unwanted pregnancies and would offer better information. He says the Supremes shouldn’t overturn Roe v. Wade. He says he doesn’t want to criminalize choices of women and their doctors. BUT he does want restrictions. I’ll be watching him.
And here:
Tim Kaine
Kaine-Kilgore debate
July 19, 2005-
“I do not support any change in the institution of marriage. I do not support the creation of civil unions, but I do believe that gays and lesbians should be able to contract with one another, and we should respect those contracts in Virginia law, just as we respect any contracts.
“And finally in the area of adoption. Virginia has adoption laws right now that I agree with. The adoption laws say the only couple that is allowed to adopt is a married couple.”
He says that religion and politics are entwined. Not liking that. Is he Catholic? (I”m fallen away, so I get to ask.)
But left law school to go to missionary in Honduras. Mormon? Who is this guy????
Loo Hoo, I saw him weigh in on this. And through the fog of his many attempts at statements, he seems to feel that V*agra is for a medical condition, whereas the other thing – not. But his route to the answer was most peculiar.
No candidate is going to be perfect. I certainly realize that. My position has been that whoever Obama chooses ought to be someone who can help him get and keep support within the party. At least, that’s what he ought to do if he has any programs he wants to get past Congress. Since I’m not a party insider, I have no idea who that might be. Clinton seems an obvious choice in that regard, but that may not be possible, and Clinton herself may have some good reasons for not accepting.
I don’t think Obama needs much help on the campaign trail. He and his handlers are great campaigners.
Okay, per Charlie Rose — Catholic, speaks Spanish, missionary in Honduras, Harvard Law. He seems to speak pretty honestly…..not a fakey guy. I can understand his opposition to abortion, but he isn’t apparently unwilling to talk sexual reality. Says he follows the law. So far I don’t hate him. I disagree with his views on gay marriage and abortion, but he seems reasonable ….. thoughtful. Hell, when my daughter first talked about gay marriage I thought she was nuts, but I listened and I learned.
I used to think that you could educate Catholics about abortion. Being fallen-away, I thought people could make sense since I thought i’d gotten some sense. I challenged a friend who was all gung-ho anti-abortion. What if you daughter was brutally raped (you know….make it all horrendous) and got pregnant. What would you do? My friend was convinced that her 11 year old daughter should bear the child and give it up for adoption. I was floored! That’s your grandchild, I said. She didn’t care. Force the raped child to give birth and then toss the grandchild out. Somehow that made sense to her. I still don’t get it….twelve years later. Just doesn’t compute.
Don’t mind me if I just do my own diary here. Kaine wasn’t weasely….. he didn’t have those voice changes that McCain displays when he’s doing the big lie. I don’t agree with him on all issues, but I will give him some space and will look for more information.
BTW, the earthquake was all rolly…..maybe my 5th or 6th California earthquake. Some bigger than others. Having done a hurricane in Houston and tornado in Cincinnati area, I’d still rather do an earthquake. Mother Nature is really quite somebody, dontcha know.
For myself only, I’m not confusing Kaine with a Republican in McCain’s mold, which makes him an alternative to McCain. But that’s not saying much. And when did we begin letting homophobic and anti-choice folks into esteemed positions in this party? Harry Reid comes to mind.
And Kaine gets Obama inroads into Virginia, but someone like Wes Clark gets him a lot more.
I am still learning here…….I understand that people are offended by abortion. I don’t hold that against them, I’d rather educate them. I, myself, was initially opposed to gay marriage because i did not understand the concept and felt that marriage meant something ….all about husband/wife/children. I needed to be educated. I never had a problem with gay coupled adopting because I worked with gay coupled and with adoptees through probabtion services and it all made good sense to me. I guess I just think that it makes sense to educate rather than escoriate. Know what I mean?
Sorry for the typos……..couples, excoriate. et al. I just know that talk helps, sometimes heated conversations, people have the capacity to learn and grow. It took me time to comprehend the idea of gay marriage — now I ‘get’ it……but it didn’t help when people called me names when they might just as well have explained things. Change is not always easy. Obama wants change…..we ALL want change. But we don’t have to beat the shit out of each other on the path.
Reasonable and sober view.
Although there seems to be less chance of it now, I would like a President who, if the feeling strikes him/her to constrain any right of any American, he/she look to the Constitution first. That’s where those rights lie for me. And if the Constitution isn’t dispositive, we should feel free to open them to public policy debate.
Amen, so to speak. Not religious, but with spirit. I took that belief-o-meter test someone put up and came up a goshdarned Druid! Thought I’d be UU or Buddhist, at least, but, ah, no. I’m all about the Constitution…..and so distressed about how the neos have trashed it. I am annoyed with Obama for dissing FISA (not even sure why he felt he needed to do that…..he could have done a Hillary on it)……but I’m not like those who think they’ll stand down from this vote. I will pull the lever for Obama with enthusiasm simply because we must get those Repubs out of there and now! And if he picks Kaine, then I’ll spend my time trying to educate him in whatever way I can.
Fallen Lutheran here.
Truth is, I don’t think Obama agrees with the FISA update. I think it was purely political.
He should have raised 15 kinds of Hell about it, but someone somewhere in his campaign felt that he would be putting too many chips on the table if he came strong and lost, or if he publicly flayed the Democrats for supporting it and lost their “enthusiasm” for his bid.
There are a lot of Democrats who have skin in the FISA game, Nancy being one. It is in her interest that the briefings she witnessed stay hidden from view, and testimony by telecom companies makes that problematic.
Yeah, I get that. I hope that if Obama becomes the next Pres that he will stand up. It’s a risk I’m willing to pull lthe lever for. I don’t know if he has the connections to clean up the mess that’s been made, but I don’t see an alternative. On that note, I’m calling it a night. Nice to chat with you newtonusr.
Truth is, I don’t think Obama agrees with the FISA update.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve done some reading by and about Obama’s colleagues, friend, and mentor, Cass Sunstein. Among other things Sunstein has written a lot about Obama and Obama’s views. And I have lost my faith that Obama’s about face was purely politcal. (But I hope I’m wrong.)
I probably should have phrased it “understands the Constitutional breach implied by the FISA update…”
Look at Pelosi’s floor speech about this – however drugged (my guess is a 3-martini-lunch from her pie-eyed appearance) she was to stand up and make that shameful assertion, she knew god-dammed well what she was doing.
I give Obama no less of an intellectual grasp of the implications. It doesn’t make me any more comfortable about our Congress, but if he was hewing to political necessity, however fucked up, i trust that he will know the difference when another one of these crosses his desk.
So enough of calling it the “negro subprime loan crisis,” already.
Some new research from UC-Ir validates in considerable quantitative detail what the paid-for media have refused for nearly two years to acknowledge, despite a lot of people telling them repeatedly:

I don’t know what made me think of that song today, but now I can’t find it!

Way to go!
nahant, how long have they been in business?
after 11 years at 330/month lease, do the numbers really add up in your favor?
Kinda cool for July, isn’t it? ;-)
A few years ago I was down there in May and it was like that. Walking into the airport parking garage was like walking into an oven.
Yikes, nahant. What’s the price difference if you buy it instead of lease?
Hi everyone. Thanks for the email, Newtonuser – did I scare you off?
Is it this one?

We’re cool. Logistics to follow.
i’m just thinking that my highest pge bill was for $244 month and that was gas and electric. in my case, i would be losing money on that deal.
Price for such a large system (more than twice normal, which I need) is 69k with tax and all the other fees required. But then no maintenance, guarantee or upgrades at the end. So seems better to lease than buy.
does that mean you will be able to come? if so, woohoo and thanks newtonusr for providing the ride.
still looking for rideshares for mary mcc from sac, busted from up north and big brother from slo (san luis obispo area)
Indeed.

Thanks Neuro:>) Good thing is we get very good sun on both of the roofs! Rep had a neat tool that uses GPS and fish eye device to calculate just how much sun we get..
Thanks. Here is another version, neither is the one I remember, but this is HOT!
Awesome.. Sounded like Bob Hope doing the introduction.
mercy mercy mercy (fanning face)
Eleven kW is a pretty hefty system. That could run my house, I think, at any time but the dead of winter, and I have electric heat. Most of the year I’d be selling power to the power company. At least, I would if they bought it.

Nite Suz. I am heading there also … need to be at Stanford in the morning for my Dr meetings…
repeated references to “the Democrat party” on NPR today from Bob Barr, the Libertary party candidate
I heard about those guys on the radio. It sounds really interesting. A good way for everybody to come out a head. They don’t have it yet in the Sac area.
What is up with Bob Barr? Over the past few years I have heard him say a few things I agreed with.
If he can catch the train from SLO to Salinas I could give him a ride up and back Sunday….just send me his email & we’ll see if that may work out. ;~)

on the plus side he repudiated the Republic party.
Goodnight, Suzanne.
You Sure?? I thought they were based out of that area???
Maybe because he’s now an ex-Republican he can speak his mind? That K Street project sure kept party discipline going on that side of the aisle.
Does Bush proposal threaten access to the pill?
White House seeks to protect health-care workers who object to abortion!
I hope to hell not… Talk about losing your base… last I checked women were more than half the population… How freaking stupid is that??
gee, that felt kinda chilly.

Actually not a rhetorical question.
Threatens the pill even in cases of rape. The details on that are horrendous.
Down here in the bay area we gets lots of sun all year long and a solar collector will still generate power even when it is raining… As long as there is some light it will generate power just not as much..
Wind is good but who are you going to get to keep blowing on the wind mill when the wind stops blowing/s
How does he expect to get any crossover democrats if he insults them?
I listen to the right radio occasionally, and that business of the democrat party drives me the most nuts.
They know it though, and for them it’s half the fun of saying it.
mmmmmmm. Maybe it was a different company. Come to think of it they had a deal where they gave you power in exchange for the roof space. Any left over was sold to the grid. And it wasn’t a monthly fee. It was a small upfront cost. Either way it sounds better than what we are doing now.

It’s in response to that mispronunciation that I refer to the Other Guys ™ as the Republick Party.
they succeed wildly in achieving their annoyingness
Wow. Did you guys know that when you put TM in parentheses that it does that superscript thing?

Well this time I am really really going to snuggle with my sweetie… she just came home from the lake this afternoon after being gone since Sunday…. Nitey nite PUPS. Hope you all sleep well …
im going to try TM without parenthesis.
(TM) as opposed to (TM) after some words? Looks like they fixed it.
I’m watching Tim Kaine, Gov. VA, on Charlie Rose. I’ve seen people gag on his name on this site. I wonder why? He seems to be straight up. What am I missing?
OK, let’s try ™ as in lower case. That’s it.
™
Good night, nahant.

Late Late Nite ™ is a good place to be.
I seem to remember he gave one of the least inspiring conter-State of the Union speeches ever. The usual DLC suspects wrote it for him, of course. That’s my only impression of him.
Goodnight, Nahant ™.
that should be “counter- State of the Union speeches”
Here’s a start:
He sounds like a reasonable person. He is anti-death penalty and anti-abortion, but he says he upholds the law. He says he thinks most folks would wish for fewer unwanted pregnancies and would offer better information. He says the Supremes shouldn’t overturn Roe v. Wade. He says he doesn’t want to criminalize choices of women and their doctors. BUT he does want restrictions. I’ll be watching him.
And here:
Tim Kaine
Kaine-Kilgore debate
July 19, 2005-
He says that religion and politics are entwined. Not liking that. Is he Catholic? (I”m fallen away, so I get to ask.)
But left law school to go to missionary in Honduras. Mormon? Who is this guy????
Watch to see if birth control should be covered whenever Viagra is covered.
Strange times.
For one thing, he’s anti choice.
Oh, Kaine is so wrong on that! Children need families. Good families are good no matter what their configuration.
How could Obama even think of him if he’s anti-choice? Very disturbing.
Loo Hoo, I saw him weigh in on this. And through the fog of his many attempts at statements, he seems to feel that V*agra is for a medical condition, whereas the other thing – not. But his route to the answer was most peculiar.
Looks like now he has two strikes against him ™.
My DD has the low down.
He a native of Kansas, Gov of Virginia.. I don’t know if that helps the math in both states, but it can’t hurt.
****Not that I support anyone with the slightest anti choice inclination.
Hard to believe that we’re all the same species sometimes.
With that lovely thought, I think it’s time for me to sign off. Goodnight, all ™.
Time for me to hit it as well.
goodnight fabulous firedogs
nite cujo
Kaine’s talk on education and teacher pay is realistic. He admits that teacher pay shows how we don’t value teachers. That’s saying something.
Speaking of which, does anyone know what’s happening with the Oxdown Gazette, e.g., it expected time of arrival?
Exactly. I’d much rather see Clark, or Howard Dean, or even Biden.
This may have been posted to give us a loose timetable.
I can think of a couple of folks I’d rather see than Biden (no slur intended), but Tim Kaine makes him look positively Presidential.
As for the good doctor – he has displayed unique gifts where he is. And there are 50 states to think about.
Back at you, DWR1.

But the really fun part is what the researchers found were significant causes …
