My parents recently moved back there and my mom is ill, so I have to go back way more frequently than I like (like next week). I always come back relieved to be gone. One time my husband and I were on a visit there driving around and I was cussing about not being able to stand Texas and my husband asked me why I felt that way. I was taken aback because it was so visceral I really couldn’t articulate it. so after a whole day of thinking about it I told him it was because for me it just embodied bigotry, intolerance, racism, general fucked-in-the-headedness, George W Bush and “pave paradise and put in a parking lot”—only without paradise to start with. So after I blurted all that out, he cheerily said “yeah, I agree with you”—after all that! And now may I apologize to all the Texan firepups who I have offended with that outburst. It is a very violent culture, as well as being very sensitive to perceived slights.
