Those right-wing e-mail forwards that everyone gets (usually from family members or friends) are, as we've seen, one of the right's most effective ways of spreading lies about Democrats.
After all, their anonymity allows people to lie with impunity -- like the one supposedly quoting Obama, talking about how much he hated white folks ... when the words were actually written by a well-known white supremacist. More recently, we've been seeing "the Obama death list."
The standard response is that "liberals do it too." Well, my friend Woodrowfan, who is a history prof, decided to keep track of the e-mail forwards for both sides that landed in his Inbox. Here's his report:
An update on the number of right-wing lies being told about Obama. I checked Snopes again today for my weekly check to see what lies the wingers are spreading about Obama now. The current count is below.
Total emailed rumors filed under "Obama": 26. (an increase of 1 since last week)
Number of negative: 25 (and the one positive is really about RFK as much as it is about Obama.) The new email is the one with lies about Obama in Afghanistan. The Obama "death list" has not yet made it to Snopes.
OK, that’s 25 negative emails. So, how true are they?
- Totally False: 17 (an increase of 1)
- Partly False : 5 (unchanged)
- Unknown: 3 (unchanged)
- True: 1 (which lacks context which would have made it less negative)
Wow, out of 23 emails with verifiable facts, 22 are either total or partial LIES.
Now, how does McCain compare?
Total Emails: 3 (!?!) a decrease of 1. They dropped one about his son's service records (which was positive.) I don't know why.
- Positive 1
- Negative 2
A big, big difference. How many are of the 3 are true? One is true, but lacks context. It's an email about how great Cindy McCain is, which neglects to mention her being convicted of stealing drugs given to her charity.
The remaining two are marked as unconfirmed, some comments about McCain by Karl Rove and the bit about him not being eligible for President because he was born in Panama.
So, which side, left or right, relies on lies in their campaigns? I think it's clear that the RW "wins", hands down.
I also have a theory about why these forwards are so popular with the right. It's a combination of two main factors:
-- The right has to lie about Democrats, as a simple matter of winning or losing, more than the left must about Republicans, especially after eight years of Republican rule. All we have to do is discuss their actual record.
-- Moreover, wingnuts are far more prone to believing this shit. It's a much more gullible audience.

My right wing brother sent me the email on Cindy McCain. And even that can be stretched as an Obama smear in ways as it leads off about how much more wonderful Cindy McCain is in contrast to Michelle Obama, who “isn’t proud of America.”
The right is waaay behind the liberals when it comes to blogging. But, they’ve got email down pat.
My mom had on forwarded to her by a co-worker. She then forwarded it to me so I could see it. It was (I guess) the original Obama is a raghead one. In fitting piece of irony, he was fired for being a usless drone.
I got a new FWD just yesterday from my rightwing neighbor. It includes a series of pictures, supposedly of the new Cook County (IL) Correctional Facility looking very plush (you know how we bleeding hearts baby the bad guys), and asks, “Could this be something Barack put in place?” A quick Snopes search revealed that it’s a detention facility in AUSTRIA. I wrote him back, including the link, and asked, “Where do they get this stuff?” Of course he hasn’t responded.
A Snopes reply usually gets me off the recipient list at least. (Uncle Ted must’ve left his truck on the toobz before heading into his arraignment.)
I get these things fairly regularly- the most recent just a few nights ago about Michelle Obama’s radical college thesis that shows she’s a rascist….I don’t know how effective they are- the people who send em believe them implicitly, but they’re mostly goopers anyway..
The question is how undecided voters view them- remember they are receiving them from someone who they know. I’d guess that they move some votes.
I suppose that McCain is going to deny that his campaign is behind these lies just like Bush *cough* wasn’t behind those phone calls that said he had Fathered an African American kid out of wedlock.
Is there any way to find out who is behind this? Is it T. Boone Pickens swift boating again?
I had always assumed that these things came from the Rove lie factory- but recently I read something about an Obama supporter who worked hard to track a couple of them to their source and came to the conclusion that they were written and distributed by people disconnected from the gooper party or any campaign and that their spread was not co-ordinated….I’m still suspicious.
So am I this Obama supporter story may be a plant to throw us off.
This is a part of the sleezy Repub. whisper campaign. Do the repubs advertise in National Enquirer? Maybe that is where we should spend some advertising dollars and leak it to the MSM that we are trying to reach the sleezy slimeballs that are starting and passing this garbage
The things are insidious…they are lies and fairly impossible to respond to as you don’t know who got em- also you can’t respond to them without repeating the lies…potent weapons.
Maybe we should start a National Registry of those who forward the sleeze
I guess it is only to be expected. I always thought that the right would run a Blazing Saddles sort of campain. You know, the Democrat is a N bong r

Agreed the right is stuck with the fact that McCain can’t get out from Bushes shadow because he has no real ideas that pull in voters.
Even hate is not working for McCain or else he would have moved to the Center after the GOP Primary.
I wonder if by forwarding these silly racist emails to Moderate and Lefty voters McCain is breaking GOP rules about speaking in code about racism in front of Moderate and Lefty voters so as to not scare them off.
Polls on this subject should be hilarious:)
Yes, and how about the smears written by the likes of Cohen and Dowd?
Dowd’s piece in the NYT’s this morning was puerile.
I got one of these things recently from a gooper college professor- it was a long list of new taxes that Obama was going to implement- it was all bullshit- it had a link to a story that was entirely irrelevant to the claims made in the email..The guy who sent it apparently didn’t ever check the link.
WaPo did a story on the source of some of those smear emails. See An Attack That Came Out of Ether 6/28/08. Sorry, can’t do “link”.

We were never going to get these votes despite Mark Penn’s micro trends. Still this is how many months after the Primary and despite all the racist emails McCain still has not motivated his base.
Could the 70%er voters want talk about the issues?
OT does anyone here wonder what the MSM really thinks when they read us? Sure we fight sometimes and other times we are politics, law, engineering, green power, etc students or experts.
But despite Joe” Scarborough’s comments about cheetos whether its an FDL meet or Netroots Nation we do seem to be boring middle class people.
I think we need some publicity on this subject the GOP has really lost the Silent Majority this time. Its the MSM who is out of touch on the issues and we have the polling to prove it.

The NY Times is losing more and more subscribers maybe Modo should go back to criticizing Bush again if Modo wants to have any money for retirement:)
None of my DFH liberal friends would ever consider sending lying, totally false chain emails smearing the R’s. Even if there weren’t enough outrageous republican deeds daily to email, sending made up stuff is just low rent. R’s who send this crap aren’t interested in facts.
Email the person back and ask them how much more will McCain have to raise taxes if he keeps his promise to keep troops in Iraq?
Ask him whats cheaper hybrid cars only in America or more war?
Ask him why are we in Iraq when Ossama is in Pakistan?

Boring and middle class as selling points to win an election? I never thought I would ever right that:)
Maybe we should start asking the media why they are not following up on who is sending these emails or are they afraid of missing the barbecue?
It would seem that even though progressives own the internet the fascists have mastered it. Unless there is serious pushback Obama is going to find himself blindsided.
And of course there’s this hidden camera shot of McSame’s brain trust. http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008.....isors.html
I have been following elections since the Kennedy/Nixon election in 1960. I have noticed a very disturbing trend over about the last 20-30 years. The republicians have gone dirty, acting more like a protection racket than a political party; the use of the poison pen, the anonymous letter/E-mail, the rage to win-no matter what-use of lies and rumors against the dems, (along with the silly and sophomoric democRAT that they use at every chance). The use(willingly as far as I can see)of the MSM to spread scurrilous stories, the Atwater/rove meme. Always trying to spread rumors about the dems, but never tell anything positive about your own campaign, what the vision and policies might be. Never ever debate the dems on what the policies are, but claim that if they don’t agree with you then they are for(communists or terrorists, take your choice). I saw this up close and personal when Newt came to my home town to campaign for the republician candidate who was running against the incumbent Bart Stupak-D, Mi. The rep candidate-who I can’t even remember the name of-and Newt tried very hard to slime and throw mud at Bart, but her only vision for the district-other than wanting to win simply because she wanted to be the congressperson-was to build a 4 lane freeway across Mi’s UP. Which, if she had bothered to ask, no one wanted. In the end she lost every precinct in the district, and even lost her home town-her family was very big in state republician politics, and most of the counties in the lower peninsula that were in the district were very republician-yet they continue to vote for Stupek no matter what republician heavyweight comes in to try and help smear him.
Everytime I get one I hit the reply to all button and give everyone on the email sent to me a link to snopes. I figure at least I let those people know that it’s false and if they forwarded the original to other people sometimes there is a chance that they will feel guilty and foward the snopes link to those people too. I think the Obama campaign should create their own email to alert the public about this problem and do it in a humorous way so that people will want to forward it to friends. For some reason people love to forward funny emails.
Be aware though that some of these will claim that Snopes or Urban Legend has already confirmed it so in those cases you have to get the real Snopes link and make sure to highlight that the previous statement that Snopes had confirmed is in fact a lie.
Just keep knocking them down. That’s all you can do.
How come I haven’t gotten a single one of these Obama smear emails? What did I do right to get myself off of every single one of the right-wing spammers’ lists?
I mean, I get spam, like everyone else, but it’s all about “male enhancement” and Nigerian presidents-in-hiding. And of course, my google spam cather gets them all.
But not one “Barack is a muslim terrorist who stole the Limbaugh baby” forward for me.
I feel a little bit left out.
