Jim David Adkisson, the right wing terrrorist whose rampage left 2 dead and 7 wounded Knoxville, was a fan of all three.
The vitriol these three have hurled at progressives over the years is sickening. Hannity wrote a book equating liberalism with terrorism. O'Reilly invited a terrorist attack on San Francisco. And Savage accused "the homosexual mafia" of "raping our children's minds."
But these examples, as bad as they are, really don't tell the whole story. This poisonous rhetoric is spewed over our airwaves segment after segment, hour after hour, day after day. So it's really not at all surprising that people like Adkisson could be pushed over the edge.
What's surprising is it doesn't happen more often.

Many of the minor luminaries of the right are spinning madly that this was anything but a wingnut acting out hatred of liberals. Amazing the lengths they are going to attach this to marital issues, Radical Islam, yada yada yada… TBoggs and Jesus General both have posts up on two different spinners.
They all have a special place already allocated for them in HELL …
O’Reilly, Hannity, Savage = Axis of Evis?
The devils made him do it….
If you can get through the screener, I would love to have the question asked of them,
“Are you completely sure that your statements had absolutely nothing to do with that guy shooting up the church, no tiny chance whatsoever?
“Because it would be terrible to have blood on your hands like that.”
Yeah. It seems that the winger amen corner finds perfectly good reasons for wingers going postal.
“These types of poor, oppressed, otherwise good family-style people have, sadly, failed themselves. But happily, Conservatism cannot fail.”
When you equate liberals with terrorists, call them traitors, say they’re the enemy and that they’re evil — and your audience is angry and armed, what do you think is going to happen?
Again, I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often.
I wish there were a way that we could prosecute hannity limbaugh o’reilly et al for sedition.
Sadly,I think this is going to have to happen more than once for people to rise up and be repulsed as a culture,to say no more of this.
We simply don’t seem to learn from history,I wish it weren’t so,but it is what it is.
Ack. I’ve been on a downer lately, sorry. I’ll shush til I’m in a better mood. I’ve just been trying so hard to explain to my son why it pays to be a good person with integrity when all around us the bad guys seem to get away with so much and justice is rarely served.
BTW Edward Teller weighs in at the end of the Ted thread.
Interesting that Mr. Adkisson’s concern was that he no longer qualified for food stamps and had trouble finding work. That scenario will be playing out allover Bushlandia in the coming days/weeks/months. Right Wing Radio AND THEIR CORPORATE SPONSERS have identified the scapegoats de jour, and Mr. Adkisson is the first to project his frustrations on them and taken action.
Didn’t the same thing happen in Rwanda a while back? Was radio a key in fomenting the hostillity and urging direct violent action?
Perhaps the Christies or Loose head props or creative legal minds can see if a cause of action exists. here’s hopin’
I was up in Boston yesterday and the local-news chuckleheads did a 30-second segment on the shooting saying that Adkisson attacked the church because of “their beliefs,” without ever saying what those beliefs were. This was well after I had already read that he was on a liberal-hunt.
I want to say they couldn’t even bring themselves to say it was a UU church, though I can’t swear to that.
At one time they were nothing more than gasbags
but knowing that they get their simple minded talking
points from the administration,it becomes a lot more scary!
Tell him that although these guys may have million dollar condos in New York and summer houses on Martha’s Vineyard, take their mistresses on weekend getaways to Paris and Rio, and drive Porsches, they feel really miserable inside. *g*
I’m not in favor of giving up any more of the Bill of Rights—Clusterfuck has already chipped away an adequate amount of it.
If these guys can be shut up because of what some idiot did- then freedom of speech has come to an end in this country.
If one doesn’t protect speech by people one disagrees with- then their support of free speech is merely a partisan convenience.
Great post, BT.
Wow, I had no idea that I was acting to protect public safety when I turn copies of “Liberal Fascism” on the shelf at bookstores so the name doesn’t show.
Yeah. Liberals are fascists, too. Perverts. Seditious, terror-loving America haters.
How ironic…
Since this guy was shooting people because of their beliefs, I wonder if this qualifies as a hate crime?
And I think calling it a terrorist action is right on. It’s not only about beliefs, but about politics, as well.
The way that these right-wing fanatics, especially Savage and Hannity and Limbaugh, constantly spew venom against ‘liberals’, almost saying that it is OK to eliminate the liberal menace to (what they think) is trueblue America. It makes me think of these right-wing radicals in the same mindset as the way Obama Bin Laden feels towards the United States. Hannity talks about OBL in terms of a radical Islam mentality, but he should look at himself and see the mindset of a radical American. As there are radical mindsets in the midst of peace-loving Islamic religion, so, too, are there radical mindsets in the midst of, what should be, Constitution-loving, peace-striving American citizens. The Neocon movement has especially pushed it in this direction.
The right wing media stars will accept no culpability. However, they would viciferously blame all progressives if the murderer listened to anyone on Air America.
Damn that was a big earthquake.
That’s for sure- if they gave up their tone and content against “liberals” they’d be out of business- it’s all they’ve got!
For clarity–
The irony is that he was shooting at the people who are against NAFTA, which is probably why the guy couldn’t get a job.
We need a culture where it’s OK to disagree, even to STRONGLY disagree, but with an understanding that it is NEVER acceptable to act violently agaist anyone because of their views/race/gender/sexual orientation/or any other difference.
This is why hate crime legistaltion (HCL) is crucial. With HCL we can make it clear that violent actions for these reasons are not acceptable in our Society.
We’ve needed HCL since 1998 when Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten and left to die in Wyoming. More recent examples are TVUUC, Larry King last February in CA, and Sean William Kennedy (as diaried by Eric W of DailyKos last Saturday) last year in SC. Yet Republicans keep blocking this any time the Dems have the guts to bring it up.
SLIGHTLY OT ( I mean, when is IMPEACHMENT ever really off-topic?)
Dennis Kucinich sent me an email this morning. He will be delivering a petition for impeachment to congress THIS WEEK (Deadline is Wednesday) He is asking you to sign it and pass it along to 10 of your friends to sign. Here’s his message:
This week I will present members of Congress with Impeachment petitions submitted by those of you who have signed the on-line impeachment form.
I need your help. In the next few days we must redouble our efforts to get more signatures on the online petition at kucinich.us. I’m asking each of you to please contact at least ten of your friends to go to www.Kucinich.us now and sign the Impeachment petition that will be delivered by me. Wednesday night is the deadline.
Please send out an email to all your friends and family, post this link, http://kucinich.us to your blogs and make this effort count as this is the only petition that I will deliver.
One of the taking heads(O’liely?) said that those who signed a petition (620,000 signatures) called it a fascist petition….huh…..
How can a petition be fascists?
How can signers on a petition be fascists?
Jeffery Feldman has been predicting this and it was just a matter of time. How many other events should be linked to the violent speech from the wingnuts…..
O’Reilly is an assclown. He’s also said Netroots Nation and the KKK were “exactly the same.”
There are less than 100 days until the election. Congress will be gone for the month of August and busy campaiging nearly every day after that…
impeachment?
When?
Ooh. I had forgotten that one. Seems like a bit of projection now, huh? Are there any documented cases of someone killing right wingers because of their beliefs?
They would take our only progressive talk raio off the radio air if someone who listened to them did this.
There is an excellent piece on hufpo about this topic (By Dan Agin)
Surprising the F.B.I. didn’t know about this guy, what with their surveillance of anti-war groups and such…
Left wing acts of violence have mostly been of the destruction of property type.
And when some radical green group defaces a bunch of Hummers, Hannity, O’Reilly, and Savage are all over it for weeks.
Yeah, there’s such a close connection between the folks in Netroots Nation calling for restoration of the Constitution and holding criminal politicians accountable versus cross burning and lynchings of black folks.
Yep, sure looks the same to me. /s
They’re all troglodytes?
Okay, now to read.
free speech does NOT equal unfettered speech. it’s the shouting fire in the movie theatre thing: there are legal consequences to speech.
I did not advocate shutting up the hannities, etc., I said I want them answerable for their words.
just sayin’!
He was not anti war, just anti liberal and anti gay.
probably in the 30s.
The left got a little surly during those years.
Adkisson shot the people in the church because he wanted to. The wingnuts can give it any spin they like but they created a climate where this sort of thing is acceptable to do if you are angry. It could just as easily been a supermarket he hated because the prices were too high. His hatred was fed and he killed.
Wait, you mean the F.B.I. might be targeting the wrong people?!?!?
I guess it’s ok to promote fascism in America…just can’t promote democracy, it’s not patriotic. Also, on Ted Stevens indictment…who’s recording McCain/big oil secrets? Just wonderin’?
I often wonder if they realize or care how much hatred they spread. They each have their own brand of vitriol and venom but they see themselves as “Great Americans” saving the country from vicious librulz…
People actually believe and applaud the disinformation they shower on them day after day. So sad.
Ah, rw, that reminds me;
Some years ago, at a large eastern university, there was a man who loved to harangue the students, as they changed classes, about God and the ‘right way’ of seeing things.
One day I chanced upon a scene which was growing ugly. The right Godly messenger was being physically backed into a corner when I walked up and asked, “What is the problem?”
The general consensus was that patience was exhausted and consequence was about to happen.
I opined that the divine messenger had every right to speak, and, equally, that everyone else had the right not to listen.
This dispersed the worst of the aggravation and people went about their business …
The holy man then said, “You think you’re pretty smart, don’t you? Well, when we win and take over this country, we are going to deal with people like you first!”
I smiled, told him I felt honored and wished him a good day.
Was his name Rove?
But remember, we’re the one who spread hate. Just amazing.
Great story!
No.
Was it this guy by any chance?
Good Grief.
That story reminds me of the former Gary whats-his-name (married to Miss USA)–
On this segment was an anti-semite and a famous Jewish psychiatrist. They talked for awhile, and the psychiatrist asked the man if he would kill him because he was Jewish.
Astonishingly, the man answered in the affirmative. He wanted to kill the psychiatrist simply because was Jewish…even though he *liked* him as a person…
Scary, scary person
*chuckle*
“Blessed are the cheesemakers”
Seems to our “me’ generation, lying and cheating is fairplay in the game of life (if you are smart enough to get away with it).
But if that were the case, our current crooked crop of corprate congressional salespeople would have no regulations and laws to DISMANTLE.
Conclusion; there were honorable leaders of integrity running this nation once, and hopefuly can again in the near future.
No, the chap in question was far less an eminence than Rove or Birdsong.
And, thankfully, I’ve not heard mention of him for many moons.
But I doubt not that he is still at play in the fields of the Lord.
In addition to wingnut books, Jim David Adkisson could also HEAR the hateful radio gasbags. WNOX-FM has Fats, Hannity, Boortz and Levin on Monday through Friday.
Yes, I’ve had some whey-out adventures, puravida.
;~D
To intimidate a group of people with violence based on ideological motives is the textbook definition of TERRORISM. The attack on the Unitarian Church was a terrorist act by a terrorist. Ergo, Hannity, O’ Reilly and Savage are inciting TERRORISM, just as BinLadin incited Mohammad Atta. OK DOJ, when are you going to send THESE guys to Gitmo? We’re waiting…
Unfortunately those are dangerous arguments- same as those leveled against civil rights workers in the sixties..
I prefer to stay on the safe side of free speech.
Best course of action would be a civil action.
How much do you want to bet this guy is enjoying celebrity status with the good people of red America? I wouldn’t be surprised to learn a couple of the officers in Knoxville had slipped him a high five.
All wingnut traffic should be monitored closely for a while. I have to believe they are chomping at the bit to show Adkisson some love.
Since when is PROMOTING TYRANNY free speech?
I wish bloggers would start asking this question, daily.
New Spencer
You know, the Spencer who was just named on Keith Olbermann :)
Today’s Republican Party is a freak show of hate-filled sociopaths, immoral religious and social extremists, insecure, overcompensating, irresponsible, dangerously incompetent, war-mongering imperialists and greedy, exploitive corporate anarchists. Just look at the odious and inadequate carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen the Republican Party had competing to be their presidential candidate. Being an Irish Catholic Democrat raised with four younger siblings by an uneducated single mom, I have never agreed with social conservatives, but compared to Bush’s Republican Party Eisenhower’s Republican Party was a liberal bastion of social and economic enlightenment and pluralism. Defending the actions of today’s Republican Party is advocating ignorance and evil over common sense and common decency. It would be hard to imagine that any presidential administration, Republican or Democrat, could have been as malicious, polarizing, undemocratic, corrupt or destructively pernicious to the founding causes and defining principles of our republic than George W. Bush’s. I am surprised that I am ashamed for the “good” Republicans, only because I could not have possibly imagined how “bad” some Americans were capable of being.
Oh, they realize it. They consider it their job!
Oreilly also tried to stalk gay couples in some Massachusetts resort town, claiming they made the place not “family safe.” It’s in his book. I don’t know if he actually stalked per say, but BillO definitely clenched his fists while writing about his “manly man getup and go” and “sense of right and wrong” in his early days at CBS. No Wonder CBS canned his stories (I think BillO blames Rather suppressing his “talents.”)re:psycho
When I actually called them on this, they went into denial mode.
I also predicted this in a post last October titled “What happens the day after they spill blood.“?
I’m hoping that Hannity, Limbaugh and Savage are charged as accessories to this murder. Their fascist propaganda is what makes such crimes possible because it gives permission to the many ignorant and mentally unstable foot soldiers of the Republican right. Perhaps the families of the victims can sue them in civil court. To let these people continue to broadcast their poison is contrary to the values of this country but then when a country condones tortures one can’t help but ask “just what are the values of this country?”
This is kind of on topic
ACLU Charges Sacramento County Policy is ‘violent attack’ on Constitution
Here’s their proposal it’s #8 on the calendar for 2 pm

Well said Osage. Well said!
Someone should point out to these guy’s listeners that when there is a Dem Pres, he now has the right to listen to their phone calls because they listen to and call into their shows. The “Protect America Act” can work both ways.
