As Dave notes below, some wingnut crazy shot up a Unitarian church in Tennessee, killing 2 and wounding 7. His hatred of liberals and gays was the motive.
What’s notable about this is the complete radio silence on the right.
Almost exactly two years ago, there was another tragic shooting at a place of worship — and they were all over it. Just look at this breathless, obsessively updated Michelle Malkin post.
The difference? The shooter in 2006 was a Muslim.

Good Christians don’t kill Good Christians… unless they don’tlike them.
not for all the gall in Fort Knox would they report on this angle….
OT: Josh takes the high road:
They’re embarrassed.
Guns don’t kill…blah blah puke.
The McVeigh wing of the GOP is dusting off their cammos and getting ready to get the band back together.

Why would they publicize this horrific event, when their best talent has been promoting such actions by their audience for years? Oh, you were “just kidding,” Coulter? Not what you had in mind, Beck? Simply “a joke,” Malkin?
Seems like we on the left aren’t the only ones who can’t take a joke. One among your devoted followers appears to have taken your suggestions as, um, instructions.
Regarding terrorists…I heard someone on the MSM repeat the often-repeated talking point that “terrorists”, i.e., “enemy combatants”…wear no uniforms and belong to no country (all in order to justify torture, etc.)….when is someone going to point out that every single person deemed an “enemy combatant” is a citizen of a particular country? The 9/11 “terrorists” were citizens of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Yemen. All of those held at Gitmo are citizens of specific countries. Timothy McVeigh was a citizen of the United States. This church “shooter” “terrorist” is a citizen of the United States.
When is somebody gonna call this maladministration and the media on these fact?
A terrifying thought. Neiwert said the same thing at his NN panel.
cue the black helicopters.
Of course they’re quiet. Ms Goodling is married to Krepansky over at Red State,is there one word about her breaking news story this morning? Nope. They’re not big on self examination or introspection over in that neck of the forest.
Heh, heh….they actually do exist…they fly over the area I live (in TX) somewhat frequently. They are absolutely solid black. No markings whatsoever. I have no idea who they belong to.
OT: McCain had physical today…removed small mole. May announce VP choice today. Back to regular programming.
Was in Atlanta airport leaving shortly after pres and they were loading 2 onto Military transport
Confederate Air Farce.
Not that this should happen ANYWHERE, but it is amazing that UUs – accounting for a few hundred thousand members across the US – were the minorit attacked (when there are over 150 million US Christians of which about 1/3 is Catholic). It leaves no doubt that the minority was attacked (just like in this election we’ll see black, hispanics and liberals attacked).
Lets not forget Martin Niemoller’s words: (He was a pastor in Nazi Germany who spent the war in a concentration camp.)
In Germany, they first came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Catholic.
Then they came for me -
and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.
Incidentally, for those interested, here’s what I’ve googled up on the perp:
A search for “jim adkisson” turns up what might be his father’s obituary. Another news account describes him telling his neighbor that his father had been a church deacon, which comports with this obit.
It lists as a survivor a son: J. David Adkisson of Columbia, TN. Columbia (near Nashville) is a good distance from Powell (near Knoxville), which is where this J.D. Adkisson hails from. Still, it seems this J. David Adkisson moved about quite a bit. An obituary for his sister, Lois, lists his home as Harriman, Tenn., which is a little over halfway between Nashville and Knoxville (towards the latter).
If this is the same James David Adkisson, then the news reports that he has no family are inaccurate: according to the obits, he has a daughter living in Etowah and a son living either in Tennessee or in North Carolina. Though since the latter has a different last name, it appears there is no association between them.
in light of today’s Novak news –
- Michael Savage in May when Senator Kennedy’s turmor was revealed
yeah outta respect doncha know
we all know what would happen to Savage if the left had corresponding authoritarian adherents
Ah, the paint ball venues will see an increase in business as all the nutjobs chase each other around pretending they’re gorillas, er, guerrillas.
This was a terrorist act just like shootings and bombings of clinics are. But the MSM doesn’t want to get their corporate sponsor’s panties in knots telling it like it is because we can’t admit that reich wingnut radio has been spouting out hate for all these years. And the hate bating has led to this.
The people in this church are going to be scarred for life. One doesn’t forget this kind of trauma and certainly one doesn’t expect to be attacked in a house of worship. It is going to be a long long road for them and some Glenn Beck like zombie—if not Beck himself—will make some kind of stupid joke about it and everyone will go “ho hum, it’s just him being him” and it will most certainly happen again.
And it could happen at Netroots Nation or at any other place where liberals gather and it will not be labeled terrorism unless the people doing it look different from “us.”
This is nothing new. Remember South Pacific:
We teach our children to go beyond just tolerance to acceptance in our church. And now my colleagues and I are all dealing with how to present this to our churches without letting go of our liberal values knowing that any guy like this one could do the same thing in our church because we are liberal and proud of it.
I can’t begin to tell you how I feel right now.
No war but class war. And when the other side doesn’t have any class it should be easier, non?
Hope it’s possible to bring in Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity et al right wing fascists as accessories to the crime. It’s time that America wake up to the fact that the fascist right has been demonizing “liberals” in the same fashion that Nazi’s demonized Jews, Socialists, Gypsies etc.. They need a scapegoat to play on peoples fear and ignorance to preserve their hold on power. The Nazi’s stripped the rights of the German people one step at a time until Germans woke up one morning and realized their freedom was gone. Republicans and co-conspirators in Congress are using the same tactics, all in the name of the Homeland and “national security.” So far it seems to be working.
molenoma? Announcing VP would be a great way to change the subject.
I worry about Denver with Limbaugh’s campaign to bring in the crazies…
1,717 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Blue Texan and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
This is it, I am NOT takin’ prisoners anymore, we are livin’ in a country defined by corporate fascism and we have no excuses for not declarin’ war on that fascism. Lord save us from liberal angst about turnin’ the other cheek and raising ourselves above the hate…I am a Unitarian and my father was a high school English teacher in whose household “Emmersonism” was discussed instead of grace at the dinner table. We must rise up as a people and eradicate this political terrorism that has haunted us since that dark day at the Constitutional Convention when the unholy alliance was cut between the slave-holders and the democrats. We have crossed the line as a society, our politics must from this moment be defined as a battle between the forces of terrorism and fascism and the rest of us. If Obama does not decry this massacre in an American church as an act of domestic terrorism and an attack on democracy and freedom of religion, then we should all gather outside the Denver convention hall and demand that he do so.
The crisis point has been reached, there is no middle ground, you are either a fascist or Democrat, we must hang this around the necks of every Republican in the country and we hafta force Obama ta seize the moment.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THERE IS NO COMPROMISING WITH FASCISM!!
It is quite simply horrifying, tragic, and terrifying…all at the same time. That is what terrorism accomplishes. There is no question in my mind that there is a dark element egging this sort of thing on. Just keep shining the light on it.
Move On to hope
I’m having the same kinds of conversations with some of my Lutheran colleagues.
Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran
Citizen LooHoo:
This is a page right outta the Nazi palybook in 1932 Weimar Germany…do NOT be afraid of those people, confront them and make our politicians confront them.
(((RevDeb))) It truly is a terrorist act. Designed to terrorize.
Should we all contact the FCC?
Hear, hear!!!
OT: McCain had physical today…removed small mole.
Just a minor exercise in getting the press and the American public accustomed to the idea of McLame havin’ to occasionally shut everything down for a few days while he goes into the shop for some minor repairs.
That is how terrorist acts are intended to work. They’re also intended to inspire the like-minded. Most of the time, fortunately, they don’t (think Buford Furrow or Benjamin Smith.
Right Wing radio should be applauding the fact that someone went out and followed their suggestion. Oh wait….
HA!
Why are you surprised at the comments or lack there of, of offical facsist propagandists?
It should be clear by now we’ve been watching a silent coup d’etat for the past 7 years.
No tyranny promoting propaganists should surprise you at this point.
Hello? McFly?
I saw “A Mighty Heart” over the weekend. Maianne Pearl is an amazing woman.
“socialists”
my “mccain will step down for health reasons prior to convention” meter has now been upped to 4.
Citizen RevDeb:
I don’t know what religious denomination you preach to but it does not matter…you have a moral responsibility to call your congregants out to confront the terror being brought against the people of this country in the name of American fascism. Any religious leader in this country who does not personally denounce this act and call their religious followers to stand up to these fascist cowards exposes themselves as a fascist…there is no middle ground anymore, the war has come home to our streets and churches.
I’m not surprised. I’m pointing out the hypocrisy and racism of it.
Why do I think of this every time I read about black helicopters?:
“And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about 100 miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: “Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?”
Oh, I miss the good doctor.
Roger Ailes on this topic.
“Marianne”
Follow the money. Who is paying the hate speech mouthpieces? The right will claim that moveon is funding hate speech from bloggers, etc., that is why advocating violence of any kind is a huge no, no. Some other blogs allow that sort of thing, and it should be promptly stopped.
These people have a plan…they know what they want to accomplish…they’ve been at it for a long, long time. They “almost” prevailed by rallying the country after 9/11 and abusing that support by trying to overtake the government, take away our rights, subvert the Constitution, creating private armies. They haven’t won yet, and we can’t allow it to happen. Keep shining the information light on them and call them what they are….they are a fascist regime (corporate driven government) and they are using every tactic they can to control whatever factions that will believe them, into squelching our freedom. They aren’t done yet. Fight on. Don’t be afraid to call them what they are.
Not to mention taking Sat & sun off to barbeque
RevDeb is a Unitarian Universalist minister.
When Tony Snow subbed for Rush Limbaugh, his deeply rolled “leeeebbbbbbrrrrrruuuuulllssss” was just as dark and scathing as anything Limbaugh or Hannity or Beck or Coulter or Ingraham or any of the rest of their ilk could spew.
’cause it’s all a carnival for The Villagers, and these are their carnival barkers…until they’re not….
Oh, I miss the good doctor.
yep. Upon rare occasion where the level of education comes up (I have a juris doctorate, I’ll answer that I have a doctorate – in “Inane Letters”. * .
Nobody’s ever called me on it.
* – not recommended for job interviews…
Who IS paying that 400 million to Rush(over how many years?),who signs the check exactly? Same goes for Hannity and his new deal worth 100 million?
How can it be possible these guys are raking in that much money and the radio/TV outlets they work for still make a profit? It just doesn’t seem like the numbers add up.
It’s pretty obvious that it is the Bushco machine.
Consider that McClellan just admitted that the WH is sending talking points to the mouthpieces at Fox…that’s just for starters.
It just doesn’t seem like the numbers add up.
umm, these are Republicans you’re talking about. They like their numbers to be red.
Ah, yes.
Fox News: The Pravda for the New Soviet
At least in this case the terrorist survived. Perhaps he will name those who inspired him.
Citizen Peterr:
I grew up a UUist and I was bathed in the “Sermon on the Mount”, RW Emerson’s “Divinity School Adress” and ML King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and my father was a decorated war vet who was on JE Hoover’s “watch list” in the early 1950’s so I am familiar with both the “liberal” penchant to turn the other cheek and the mandate of history to stand up to this terrorism. I am no longer a pacifist, we have had this war thrust upon us by our own unwillingness in the recent past to fight the evils terrorizing us now.
We have no choice but to fight and it’s to the death this time!
I didn’t realize that Randy Pauch (”The Last Lecture”) also was a UU.
The Unitarian Universalist Association has just opened a web space for those who wish to leave messages of love and support for the Knoxville UU churches.
On July 19 Luis Ramirez was beaten to death by 6 H.S. students who were screaming racial slurs at him. This occurred in Shenandoah, PA. There was an eye witness. As of 7/24 no charges had been filed
Does anyone have an update on this
Sorry, Didn’t mean to ‘McFly’ Blue personally.
I just get this sense that many bloggers in their new found “celebrity-dom”, are happily but with great concern over morning tea, narrating the end of America, not that they can do much more mind you.
But at least emphasize the true nature of what’s happened the past 7 years. A coup d’etat will never get any more obvious, till it’s too late.
Why yes.

(((RevDeb)))
I have been reading your comments for years here at Firedoglake and highly value the hope and insight you provide. I pray that you will find meaning in the face of senseless tragedy and that your light for justice will continue to shine.
I wanna see the leaders of my Democratic Party, beginnin’ with Obama, stand up and denounce this act of political terror and call the fascists out in the corporate press to investigate this terrorist and his act of political murder…nothin else is acdeptable!
Apparently Obama’s private prayer left in the Western Wall was immediately opened and read. Given his vote on the FISA bill, it’s hard for me to get too upset over his invasion of privacy…
They are nuts. Some of these right wingers are probably certifiably nuts, IMVHO.
Read this link about Cheney’s security demands for speaking in front of disabled veterans. He is not mean, he is nuts. Or just as much nuts as mean.
Citing his ‘draconian’ demands, veterans group revokes Cheney’s invitation to speak.

Norske,
The biggest worry involves our candidate himself. Enough said?
why do the democrats let republicans get away with bush’s “there have been no terrorist attacks since 9/11 so the president must be doing something right”?
THERE HAVE BEEN TERRORIST ATTACKS and the president is doing NOTHING right
Thanks all.
Why is this not a hate crime?
What is the difference here between this murder and what has happened in Knoxville.
And when you are listing your hate mongers on radio and tv lets not forget Lou Dobbs
I believe I read that the shooter was angry about (among other things) having had his food stamps cut-off.
So he goes and shoots up the folks at a liberal leaning church because his benefits under a liberal established welfare program were stopped by a conservative administration.
I’m sure it makes sense in some universe.
MSNBC Kelly O’Donnell now steno-ing for the McCain campaign on the attack ad on Obama and the cancellation of the visit to injured troops in Germany.
Because it’s all about “choice” — maybe instead of talking to McCain shills and furthering their smear, she could go and talk to Sen. Hagel?
What is wrong with this country?
Half rhetorical/Half not

and communists. Is it still legal to say communist in the U.S.?
Check out “The Gangs of New York” and it’s painfully obvious that nativism, racism and xenophobia have been used by unscrupulous politicians from the nations earliest days. Republicans are today’s “Know Nothing” party.
The domestic terrorist in Tenn. is just another foot soldier of the Republican Party.
The man’s ex-wife formerly belonged to the church, it turns out. So this wasn’t only a hate crime. It also wasn’t terrorism; there’s no indication this was part of any organized political activism.
So far
