Cloture just failed on the Tomnibus bill. In the midst of the debate, however, Coburn tried to make the ludicrous argument that he is, you know, a pure budget hawk who didn't support funding for the war either because he once voted "nay" on a funding bill.
If you kept your lunch down for that, good for you.
Methinks he forgets about a few other votes:
Senate Roll Call Vote 439, December 18, 2007: McConnell motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment to the bill with an amendment that would replace the $31 billion in funding for the war in Afghanistan with $70 billion that the Defense Department could use to conduct the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq without restrictions. Coburn (R-OK), Yea
Senate Roll Call Vote 261, September 29, 2006: Adoption of the conference report on the bill that would appropriate $447.6 billion for Defense, including $70 billion in emergency funds for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as military equipment. Coburn (R-OK), Yea
Senate Roll Call Vote 171, June 15, 2006: Adoption of the conference report on the bill that would appropriate $94.5 billion in emergency supplemental funding for fiscal 2006. It would provide $70.4 billion for defense. Coburn (R-OK), Yea
Coburn evidently got the support of loyal GOP apparachiks Collins, Voinovich, Lugar and Stevens in the final cloture vote.
The argument that Coburn was making about all these bills adding to the budget is bullshit anyway, but the Republicans stuck together to make sure today wasn't the day that Emmet Till saw justice. In the name of "fiscal responsibility."
I guess a few hundred billion dollars for war counts as what, empty calories?

The Pukes talking about fiscal responsibility is like Dick Cheney talking about human rights.
I guess a few hundred billion dollars for war counts as what, empty calories?
It’s like the uber-rich tax-cuts - an investment in Bush-friends, which will trickle down to… well, it kinda breaks down there….
The pukes will leave no millionaire behind.
Hi Jane.
Hot hot day here in OH. Gonna have to vent by going OT asap, with apologies.
U heard it HERE: Mrs. Greenspan, amid much stammering when she was asked to explain, has taken it upon herself to criticize candidate Obama for, -um- one or 2 times, -um- -uh-, acting….. “too presidential”.
I knew she was miffed about not being invited, all expenses paid, but, now c’mon Andrea. Lighten up. I mean, look at the the alternative for the past 7+ years fgs!?!
oh yeah, now I remember - it trickles down to the children of Bush-friends.
Seems as if Blue America has a lot more ammunition for use against Bush rubber stamp/faux moderates running for re-election this year.
more apologies. This was on Hardball, of course…..
War funding doesn’t count because it’s against an existential, transcendent threat.
Make that leave no war profiteer behind.
on the brighter side, the *service* industry for Bush-friends (butler, maids, nannies,
gardenersgreen-card-bearing gardeners, etc.) is booming.I *knew* I should have gotten that Butlering degree…
crap.
Make that leave no war profiteer behind.
Is that from the “Left-Behind” series?
I’m still lookin’ to score a Viper out of all that Leaving.
Did someone actually ask her? Couldn’t tell from the post. Thanks
OT: News that Novak has a brain tumor discovered over the weekend.
BTW…MSM…McCain is winning in the polls.
Lies, lies, lies.
Better watch out for those voting machines.
Coburn’s lip service on fiscal responsibility was shown to be bullshit when he voted against paygo because it would “endanger” the glorious tax cuts. IIRC, his was the deciding vote.
I HATE THESE SCUZZBALLS…we should NOT pay for their health insurance
and she with the face of a tanned hide is THE MOST ODIOUS yuk
As their audience shrinks and their caucus shrinks and their party shrinks, they will all be reduced to cheering each other on FOX. While the rest of us roll up our sleeves and try to fix the mess they’ve made of our country. Fiscal responsibility? Don’t make me laugh.
So Obama’s either not presidential enough or, now, too presidential? Who does Ms. Greenspan think she is, Goldilocks?
hi LS,,sick baby kitty FIIIIIIIIIIIIINALLY eating on its own… i tired
What did you see? I saw Gallup has Ob. up 9 points in recent poll.
she is a basilisk(sic)
Amazing that the United States Senate actually has cloture votes, though. I thought Harry Reid had done away with them in the name of collegiality, or something….
Aw…I didn’t know kitty was sick…yikes…glad to hear kitty is better..
I think they are referring to a particular newspaper poll…and then blowing it all out of proportion to make America crazy.
dont forget the yachts

NPR Lead = report on political hiring. Plus, biggest budget deficit in history for the next Pres.
Gee, I had to look that up. Fatal breath, huh? Hope to never be close enough to find out…
from the bard….i like it
Was that for the whole war, or only phase 2?
I guess a few hundred billion dollars for war counts as what, empty calories?
it’s corollary to the Powell Doctrine. pieces of cookie that break off don’t have calories.
Speaking of “Better and Better,” does anyone have an email address for the esteemed Howie Klein they could leave here in the comments?
Don’t forget, McAngry has already predicted that he’d be behind in the polls all the way to the election, but then he’d win the election.
November Suprise predictions….

Yes of course. Here’s to hoping you score the viper. There has to be a Viper driving Hagee want to be out there somewhere.
emptywheel is upstairs!
Monica Discriminated against Margaret Chiara’s Purported Lover, Too
That’s so’s we’re not surprised like we were in 2000. And the dems let the paper trail for elections bill go because . . .?
You gotta wonder. They were closed out of K Street for a long time, but not any longer. What’s their incentive for an Obama presidency if they retain the Hill? Lots of money changing hands up there.
Speaking of $$$ driving elections — I hope Fritz Hollings will be asked to join the Book Salon.

New post from Dave Neiwert
ABC: US headed for “period of heightened alert”
Could someone tell me why that piece of crap Coburn can hold up a wheelbarrow’s-worth of legislation, and the friggin’ Democrats can’t block that ridiculous FISA bill?
thank you Teddy for the link to the ABC news article just goes to show you that this administration is using anything and everything to scare the people of our country. This is just one more reason that we must persevere in the fall elections and defeat every Republicans who are nothing to fear mongers!
Related, and hopefully a future book salon

Seriously, get Harpers and read this
The war, the biggest deficit in world history, tax cuts for the wealthiest. Do the Republicans still have the chutzpah to call themselves “the party of fiscal responsibility”?
Irony is indeed dead.
Nice to make your acquaintance.
