Of course, he then governed to the right of Atilla the Hun and ran away from everything he said while campaigning.

Senator John McCain famously said in January 2008 that if US troops were to stay in Iraq for 100 years, it “would be fine with me.”

After Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki endorsed Obama’s 16-month withdrawal plan, McCain changed his position, telling Wolf Blitzer that “it was a pretty good timetable” in the video at the bottom of the page.

But now the Senator is denying he ever used the word timetable at all and reasserting “conditions on the ground” as the overriding factor for when US troops can leave Iraq.

“I didn’t use the word timetable,” he told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in an interview airing Sunday.

When asked if Obama was right that the US invasion of Iraq “inflamed the Muslim world,” McCain said that his own prediction of Americans being greeted as liberators was correct.

“We were greeted as liberators,” McCain said.

Looking at those polls, it looks like people are beginning to buy into the idea that violence in Iraq is coming under control, but that isn’t budging the opinion that going there was wrong and that we need to bring the troops home as soon as possible. I think that translates into no support for Teh Surge and could explain why McThuselah is changing his tune. That’s really big, since Teh Surge was all he had going for him. He has just flipped on the last thing that he had. There’s nothing left in the tank now.

Gen. David Petraeus, the Iraq commander, said in an interview with McClatchy that the situation in Iraq is too volatile to “project out, and to then try to plant a flag on a particular date.”
