I’m really sick of this meme. Et tu, Bob?
HERBERT: Obama should be 15 or 20 — a Democrat should be 15 or 20 percent ahead in the polls at this stage of the race.
Bob, I do love ya man, but that’s simply ridiculous. St. Ronald of California, who we all know was the Greatest And Most Popular President in American History, led Gary Hart by a whopping 3 points in July 1984.
Enough.
Why aren’t people freaking out that McSame is only up 3 points in his home state?

It’s early yet, McStain still has lots of opportunities to shoot himself in the foot, again.
Obama’s lead is probably infinite in our (Berkeley) world…
I don’t know Bob, might it have something to do with that harridan colleague of yours referring to his “vamping” ?!?!
Hey Blue Tex and firedogs
This is a meme that ABC News has pushing for a while. If Obama is up X points, Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos wonder why he isn’t up more. They have also been tirelessly flogging poll results that McCain is seen by more Americans as a Commander in Chief. No matter how much McCain goofs up he is still an expert on national security. No much how much he panders and flip flops he remains a straightshooter and maverick. I am not an Obama supporter but if he walked on water, the media would wonder why he couldn’t run on it.
Hey Blue Tex – you dry.
Lets see what impact this week has on polls as well as Olympics ad buy
If McSFB would have an affair with a 20-something blond staffer his approval rating among Rethugs would jump 10 points. The family values crowd loves nothing better than a philanderer.
I wonder if McCain can pull a Gore 2000 and lose his own state?
Unless his name is Clinton
Sooooo, you’ll be voting for McSFB I take it.
There was a very interesting article in LA Times on 7/11/08. It gave a time line for McCains divorce from court papers. Divorce filed 2/19/80 – stated they cohabitated until 1/7/80 – Marriage license w/ Cindy 3/7/80 – divorce final 4/2/80. Then compares this with his book – interesting
Wasn’t Jimmy Carter 10 points ahead of Saint Ronnie at this time in 1980?
Just because the polls indicate that Bush and the Republicans have just about destroyed this country, there are still many people who won’t vote for Obama no matter what because wait for it… he’s African American. I live in Kentucky and I personally know people who feel that way. Just can’t vote for a black man.
Now for those who are really undecided, Obama is going to have to work for them. He’s got the vision but he needs to come up with enough specific details to reassure people that he can work with Congress, business and other nations to help turn this economy around.
Plus I think everybody who really follows politics knows that until after Labor Day many people aren’t paying much attention and parsing the candidates stands on issues. People are still on vacation, getting their kids ready for school, watching the Olympics, canning their green beans and tomatoes and generally living life away from 24 hour cable news, YouTube and blogs.
Heck, I’m a political junkie and I’m even getting tired of it.
November is many lifetimes away and I’m not going to sweat the ups and downs of polls this early. I’m sure Obama has people he is paying to do that for him.
well.. with 2 million foreclosures now projected for the end of the year (1 out of 80 American households!), I suspect you’re going to have a lot more really really really angry people come November. Probably why McDustbowl dumped Gramm.
Gramm remains economic advisor – just dumped one title
my problem is that the more i hear of the specific details (actions not words), the more i don’t like.
i hope that the closeness of the race will convince obama and his advisors that he needs our help to win. maybe we could get something in return then…
I think I remember seeing that discussed here at the time. The Rethugs don’t really give a shit. I imagine there’s more hanky panky going on in DC than anyone would like to think about.
I think that if this story about Roverboy gets some legs, then perhaps something could break loose.
“OH attorney Cliff Arnebeck sent an email to AG Mukasey today asking for protection of the GOP’s “high IQ Forrest Gump”, following reports from ‘credible sources’ of threats sent to Mike Connell and his wife should he be unwilling to “take the fall” for election fraud in the Buckeye State’s ‘04 election.”
http://thejournal.epluribusmed…..on-lawyers
oh… cool! I didn’t know that. Mr. UBS, I personally lost $17 billion of my firm’s money, Mortgage Crisis himself continues as sr economic advisor, when 1 out of 80 Americans will have lost their homes by election time. The irony defies description…
A whole lot of folks are making sure that McSame looses his home state…. when he looses this race we can then make sure he looses his Senate seat in 2010 and put Gov Janet right in…..
The trick may be to work w/ state legislators to raise the possiblity of a Constitutional Convention and numerous amendments to the constitution.
you mean more whiners?
… and Bob Herbert went on to say that he doesn’t even believe the four-point spread that is being reported. He says that he thinks Obama is less popular than that; and McCain is more popular.
It’s all psychological especially when the tent starts leaking
No, what it means is that I will not vote for someone who has not earned my vote.
Following Obama’s new conference in Paris, where Sarkozy, endorsed him and then backed away a little, CNN’s Jim Clancy, berated Obama for not saying that he had learned oh so many new things on the trip. According to Calncy, Obama blew it big time. Just can’t have a President who is thoughtful, intelligent and well-informed, now can we? That would be, well, just presumptuous, wouldn’t it? Urrgh!
There is no way McInsane is anywhere close. The dem turnout in the primary far surpassed the republics. Bob is dilusional at best.
This raises the existential question of whether you can have a news conference if you don’t have a news media.
Hi Hugh. I left a reply to one of your comments downstairs: http://firedoglake.com/2008/07…..nt-1555713
Saw it. Thanks. I agree. I think Obama needs better advisers than he has.
It is rather amazing and incredibly depressing that it takes unimpeachable political brilliance for a democrat to win the WH these days. McShame is a doddering old fool with drool on his chin and yet he is very close to Obama. There is no way on earth it should be this close. The Reich wing echo chamber will continue to caterwaul and slime as will McShame. We need to be like hawks on the MSM and alert them to every false talking point the rethugs put out.
It is going to be an ugly, filthy, dirty fight that we will need to give our all to win.
Media matters has just put out a new alert to contact CBS regarding their cut and paste broadcasting
Yeah, that’s SO unfair. By the way, what does it take a citizen who ISN’T a Democrat or Republican to win the White House these days?
Party membership ought not be prerequisite for office.
I actually DO think it’s close. I think it’s within 6-7 points, and I think it will be at the end. If you figure 30% of Americans still think Chimpy is doing a good job, and peel off a third of independents who won’t vote for a Muslim/black panther, I’d be shocked if McSame did worse than 41-42% of the popular vote.
Given Barr and Nader, I really don’t see Obama winning by more than 6-8%.
Torture, illegal wars, domestic spying, these are just differences in policy. Why didn’t the defendants at Nuremburg use this defense?
Adding, I think Obama will win by a greater margin than Bush did in ‘04 both in the electoral college and popular vote.
No doubt their second line of defense right after “I was just following orders”.
I think Goldwater ‘64 is considered the definitive landslide and he got something like 38% of the vote (I was reading htis somewhere within the last couple of days)
In more recent times, Carter, Mondale and Dukakis are considered R landslides for Reagan and Bush I, yet each of these got 41/42% of the vote at least.
Not real sure what my point is, but a smack down where the loser gets 40% of the vote is still a smackdown.
Presser again reiterates that blowjobs in a Democrat are impeachable but war crimes with a Republican are not. Presser’s legal position can be condensed down to the fundamental principle: IOKIYAR.
they had no cass sunsteins to advise them
pollster.com looks at the electoral college math – fairly encouraging at this point in time.
Rep 147
Toss-up 107
Dem 284
(270 needed to win). of course, the “mandate” talk is driven by the national margin of victory.
I tend to agree, but it really depends on turnout and weighting by states. Take Illinois, for example. Obama is going to get a huge majority thee — probably well over 60 percent of the vote, if not 65 percent. Ditto California The thugs are discouraged and won’t turn out, while the Dems are really juiced up. That would work against Obama having a true national lead. On the other hand, his growing strength in the Hispanic Community has to help him in the Southwest and even in Texas. He should do well in Ohio, where we have a Democratic Secretary of State for once to ensure a fair vote. That works for Obama.
All said, I still think it’s going to be a blow-out for Obama. It is just very hard for me to see where the McCain votes pas 32-33 percent are coming from. A lot of traditional middle to upper class Republicans I know are voting for Obama. The rednecks will vote rethug, because they have voted that way for a generation and can’t stand the thought of a Black Man becoming President. Still, that just gets him TN, AK, KY and possibly NC, though a huge black turnout in the latter can pull the state in. As to VA, hard to see McCain winning it.
The economy will drive this election in the end. And it is sinking as we speak.
But even “blow out” elections, as the previous commenter wrote, don’t result in such a low popular vote.
The polls this early in the game are just being used by the ROM (republican owned media) to panic everyone. I don’t believe these polls because I’ve not heard one person say they’re voting for McTeleprompter. Only the neocons online have said they are and they’re the crazy-eyed wackos that 80% of the country despises right now.
I’m not worried. The only way A REPUBLICAN CAN WIN AT THIS POINT IS TO STEAL THE ELECTION USING THE VOTING MACHINES. That’s it.
