We have been having a ton of trouble with robberies. Our lawnmower and a bike was stolen several weeks ago. Four days ago the neighbor’s house about five doors down was ransacked in the middle of the day. But yesterday, a neighbor killed himself and other people broke into the house and robbed it while the guy lay dead on the floor. This was about a block and half from me. I didn’t know the man but it sure is creepy and heartless.

RC became a city about five years ago. Apparently, during the previous downturn in the economy the same kinds of things happened.

We have been here for six years and are just starting to really feel part of the community. It took me a long time to adjust to not being able to get back to the bay area. But now I am feeling a tad uncomfortable.

We have some methheads living near by.

Ron said his sister told him that people are stealing lawn furniture and ornaments in her little town in Illinois. It is happening everywhere.

I think they have ruled out murder. From the way people have been talking about it they are referring to neighbors who stole the man’s stuff. We live in a average suburban place but it borders some iffy parts of the county.

This is the second week actually. It is going really well. I have designed three sites. I did get a computer virus that I may have passed along to a client or too. I am enjoying talking with the clients.

This year (hooray!) my 2 eggplant plants are happy and productive and yesterday we had eggplant parmigiana, one of my favorites. I also tried baba ghanoush, but the recipe I had called for waaaay too much garlic for my taste, so I’m going to have to fiddle with that one. Have a great day.

I have an unexpected garden. I dug up & moved my compost spot and something sprouted where the old one was. Not sure what it is yet, but it’s probably some form of squash. Got many yellow flowers & one is turning into a fruit. Will probably be another couple of weeks before the identity is clear.

What fun! Let us know what it turns out to be. Squashes cross-pollinate like crazy, though, so it may be something quite unexpected. I hope it turns out to be something you love.

Since I just moved a few months ago, I only had time to put in some peppers, tomatoes and herbs. The peppers have been disappointing because I think it was probably a little late when I planted them. The tomatoes are great and I should have plenty to freeze. I do plan on making pesto with some of the basil and will try to dry the rest along with some thyme and oregano. Any hints on drying herbs?

Good morning, Elliot. Now the WingNuts are searching for Obama’s thesis from 1983…could be something really damning, you know.

For the thyme and oregano, clip branches off and either tie in bunches and hang in a cool dry dark place (a closet works fine) or put the branches in a brown paper bag in the closet. Once the leaves have dried take them off the branches if they haven’t fallen off and store in glass jars. I believe you can also dry them in a very slow (200º) oven or in the microwave, but I’ve not done that.

I dry rosemary that way too. Let it sit out to dry and then in a bag. Then strip the “leaves” off the stalks and store them in a container. When I need it I grind it in a mortar and pestle. Love having my own to use.
