Happy birthday, Auntie Jane!
Momma says it’s time to break out the cake and candles. I hope she means for me, too, because I love frosting!
Momma read some Digby to me this morning (she rocks!), and it made me peevish. As Digby said, Bob Cesca picked up on new media branding of "presumptuous" for Sen. Obama. Sounds like that oozy Karl Rove dude. Especially since the media complaints are things that W. already did at Rove’s urging back in 2000.
How soon the bobbleheads forget! (Or maybe it’s on purpose. Icky.)
I’ll tell you what is presumptuous: people who summer on the Vineyard telling me no one should question the way things are or want to work — really work — on our problems. My parents say it’s important to care for those less fortunate than us because that’s nice and kind. I think reporters should stop just mouthing other people’s blast faxes and volunteer at a homeless shelter and open their eyes to the rest of the world’s needs.
Presumptuous my…well, momma doesn’t let me say potty words, but I’m thinking one.
Happiest of birthdays! Pet your pooches and have lots of fun!
xoxoxo, The Peanut
PS — Momma says to remind everyone to call your Senators and ask them to support S. 3297. Thanks, mucho!
PPS — The HJC hearing on Limits of Executive Power is live on C-Span1 this morning.

Happy B Day Jane and WOW!… the peanut looks delish.
What awesome work you gals have done.
Happy Birthday, Jane!
And lots of FISA love from NPR this morning.
Woot. A birthday party and a(n) HJC hearing starring Dennis (balls) Kucinich.
Happy Birthday, Jane. Quick, make a wish and blow.
good morning, Miss Christy. Happy Birthday to Aunt Jane in Virginia.
Am having trouble getting the hearing stream to load here. Anyone else having issues or is it just me?
Happy birthday, Jane!!
She’s even cuter now, but I try not to use any current pix of her for safety reasons. This is one of my all-time fave pix of her, though. We were wiping frosting out of her ears and her hair for two days, even with baths. LOL She really enjoyed her first piece of cake!
It’s on CSpan1 on my teevee….
Ooooh — thanks!
Happy Birthday Jane!!
manners, jay…
Morning Christy and Happy Birthday Jane!!
I have one of my eldest like that, only it involves spaghetti and meatsauce.
EPU’ing myself
and right jayt,
Morning Christy!

HAHAHAHAHAHA My parents had one of me and some chocolate pudding. You can see in my eyes how utterly ornery I was at that age — and that my lifelong love of chocolate had been born. *g*
Happy Birthday, Jane!
Maybe the HJC will give you a little present today…
Actually, spaghetti was NOT her first choice in this – pizza was better because she could ‘wear’ it like a hat.
ooo. Maurice Hinchey. It will be certainly interesting to see what Maurice has to say.
No disrespect to Jane or the Peanut, but is anyone watching the HJC hearing?
Christy – you mentioned tending to be a little anal the other day. Watching CSpan, waiting for this thing to get under way, did you see that one of the paintings, a portrait, was a little crooked on the wall. Oooooh, I just wanted to reach in and straighten it. Did you? (that’s a kind of metaphorical thing.)
:)
Man, I wish Turley was on that list!!
Um, yes. We are waiting for it to actually start.
but is anyone watching the HJC hearing?
Nah. /lie
I have the hearing on TV CSpan and Pacifica on the radio
Wow .. Bugliosi will be there .. that’s so cool .. the man that brought down Manson is trying to help bring down Bush … and did anyone see the article about the WATB called AdNags today:
http://www.tnr.com/politics/st…..adc276c25d
Happy Birthday Jane!!!!
Does it strike anyone as funny that in this technological age, camera folks still sit on the floor to cover the witnesses?
Happy birthday Jane.
Geez Conyers seems to confuse quantity with quality. All the sh*t he’s listing has been useless in getting anything real done. Just raised WH arrogance to new heights has been only outcome.
Happy Birthday Jane. Punkest rocker of them all.
Happy Birthday, Jane! I hope this is the best year yet.
In the meantime, as a member in good standing of The Peanut Fan Club, my all-time favorite photo of her is the one with Kobe the poodle. What a cutie!
-S
Yeah, eCAHN, there’s only 3 hours and he’s not contributing.
Happy Birthday, Jane! And thank you and Christy and all for what you have done here.
Happy birthday, Jane!
This probably means that the trip is such a big success that the press is afraid of it. Obama was shown giving a wonderful speech and foreign leaders were comfortable with him.
Happy Birthday, Jane. Good morning, Christy.
I need to manage my anger against Lamar Smith.
joyeux anniversaire, Jane!
The sad part about what Smith is saying is that the Democrats gave him all the ammunition by rolling over to the Republicans time and again.
I was just going to say the same thing about Lamar
Hearing is underway in HJC. For some reason, I’m having trouble streaming C-Span1 today on the computer, so I’m going to switch over to my laptop and watch in the living room on teevee. Woke up with a bit of a headache this morning, so liveblogging isn’t in the cards for me today — but I’ll do some highlights if and when there are any. Thus far, it’s been a bit of bloviating to start the hearing from the bits I’ve been able to see…
Finally, Wexler!
Feliz Cumpleanos Jane!
Happy, HAPPY birthday Jane. (What a snuggly huggy baby that Peanut is! Christy)..
Jane, I’m thankful and glad you were born. I’m really grateful for all those particular genes, the uniqueness of you that made you and only you able, capable and willing to create something as powerful as Firedoglake and to give us DFH’s a community and a home on teh toobz.
Not meaning to go all mushy here, but that’s how I see it, how I feel and I’m stickin’ with that.
Thank you and have a really wondrous day and the best year EVAH!
Shall we now Parrrrtayyyyyyy!!!
:)
Lamar Smith – “I know, you know, we all know, that the president will not be impeached”.
Hey – is he supposed to stick out his tongue and waggle his fingers in his ears like that? How undignified….
“By the way, Mr. Chairman, may I quickly remind the Chair that since we are now once again in the minority, we’re all about bi-partisanship? Mr.Chairman – g’on ahead – give it your best shot.”
I hope Wexler gets a standing ovation.
Wexler on fire!!!! Good man!!!1
Meilleurs souhaits
happy birthday jane! hope you enjoy today’s HJC hearing.
Conyers says no cheering
Happy Birthday, Jane!
I so love listening to the Repubs oh-so-righteous indignations.
(who doesn’t love a good laugh)
Which comes first – the possession of an evil, black soul, or the decision to become a Republican?
Bobby Scott D-VA takes up the torch – mentions torture. define limitations on EP and how to enforce.
Steve King R-Iowa astonished by audacity that anyone would impeach!! never saw anything in last 7 1/2 years to warrent this!!!! mentions Addington, Libby, Ashcroft called = the audacity! will be locked out of the inner sanctum of the WH for this!!!!!!
Aw,
we all know ReddHedds are ageless
Hippo Birdies Jane!!!
Hopefully something that happens in the hearing will be an appropriate gift.
Wow. Today’s a red letter day — has been for years as many significant people in my life were born on this date, all fiery Leo’s.
Here’s a little lagniappe from my friend Robert for lioness Jane on her birthday:
Wishing you many, many more sunny, promising birthdays like this one, Jane.
BTW Christy did you see the Bybee memo at the ACLU site.
http://www.aclu.org/safefree/t…..80724.html
It is almost completely blacked out but the take home message is if you say you acted in good faith and did so without specific intent to inflict prolonged harm, you can torture as much as you want.
King doesn’t deserve the air that he takes up.
Happy birthday (and many more)!
Steve King will make Joe Wilson’s debrief public today = pres of Niger Niaki (?) will say iraq there to make a purchase. aides on the way to put it on record. 16 words supported. all intellegence from all over the world supports this.
So, basically, Steve King is right. Well, I guess we don’t need this hearing?
Oh, Sheesh.
I can’t figure out why King is insisting this is impeachment.
Conyers to King:
you didn’t read the memo.
Trying to restore the Constitution is just so partisan.
Yep — saw it. It’s appalling. Hope to do a thorough read of what’s left in the memo over the weekend. Just when you think you can’t get more irritated…you do.
This dildo Republican is slamming Joe Wilson. Wilson stood up to Saddam Hussein. This guy would have soiled himself in a similar situation.
Conyers – “Mr. King, my dear friend, umm, how do I say this? This is *not* an impeachment hearing, you dumb fuck. Thank you.”
yep.
Happy Birthday Jane!
re: HJC hearing – Is there some kind of rule that says Republicans on the HJC have to be total dicks? I’m just sayin…
Why is this hearing wasting so much time on the committee instead of the witnesses?
Oh god!
Dan Lundgren, what a creep!
Oops. Lungren opened the door on the phrase “show trials”. I’ll bet somebody calls him on that. “You want show trials, I’ll show you show trials–Gitmo!”
Lundgren can’t deal with the substance of the issues so instead tries to slime the dems for their audacity to bring them up.
Zoe Power mentions the Clinton impeachment re actions, tho regretable, did not undercut the constitution. this hearing is for finding ways to restore America
Lungren R=CA wondered how long it would be before someone mentioned Nixon. Sure nuff!! great respect for some of the witnesses but this is a show trial.
by all means, happy birthday Jane!
Dan Lungren rambling. There is nothing more irritating to Republicans than even a hint of accountability.
’cause the Democratic leadership really doesn’t want to be holding this hearing at all.
Has Lungren forgotten that the Republicans got a bill of impeachment against Clinton over a blowjob?
depends on the meaning of ‘is’ = can impune and not impeach
So Lungren is all for holding impeachment hearings?
which was spelled out in great detail in a report that cost the taxpayers upwards of $40 million to produce.
ding, ding, ding — we have a winner! Having actual facts and testimony in the public record makes it harder to ignore. The “leadership” wants this swept under the rug as quickly and quietly as possible.
BTW, happy birthday, Jane.
Mike Pence, future Republican presidential candidate, up now.
The Best of All Birthdays to Jane. Lots of balloons and fireworks and chocolate and cake, etc. And many more.
Pence: “bringing us down the road of the criminalization of politics”
Bush, Cheney, Addington, Rove, Yoo, etal are the ones responsible for doing this you putz!
No. This has been another edition of GOP Dodge And Phony Show Stalling In Hearings 101…
Anyone else getting these error messages?

Kestrel = yes. servers under a big load
Yep. Toobz ate my last comment. What a surprise! Why do you think there might be problems now?
Yes when I try to refresh
repeat after me
“I am not seeing mysqls”
“I am not seeing mysqls”
“I am not seeing mysqls”
“I am not seeing mysqls”
and then you won’t be seeing mysqls
FDL really has to stop feeding the squirrels GM corn
what a revolting idea
Don’t say the I-word!
That’s when it hit me too, while I was trying to type in something clever. I’m sure it was the most brilliant comment I’ve ever made, but it fell out of my brain as soon as I typed it. But it brilliantly funny, really. Y’all will just have to trust me on that point.
He does come across as smarmy and patronizing. Some people like that. I don’t particularly.
Trent Franks – “Democrats are terrorist-loving traitors!”
jayt – “(yawn)”
Trent Franks is blaming democrats for putting Americans a greater risk of terrorist attacks because the GTMO detainees get to go to court…
and now the terrists are snickering at us, too
Shorter version: If we hold hearings, the terrorists win.
Steve Cohen is a patriot.
Damn, why didn’t I think of that?
Alright, I’ll be shutting up and watching the hearing now.
I’m curious.
Do you folks out there a “refresh comments” button?
I don’t have one here and must reload the entire page to refresh.
I’m pretty sure it’s sop for each of these members of the panel to make an opening statement, I’m just wondering if they see this as something that is going to be covered by the media and/or scrutinized in the future as the beginning of something historic. Could that be why they are making their speeches — to be part of this historic event? Or they shall all blabbermouths?
It’s been disabled at the moment while we do some work on the site. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it couldn’t be helped…
An hour into it and still no witnesses. At least I’m learning about some other cool Democrats. Go Rep Johnson!
Happy Birthday Jane… (you’re) getting better all the time**
**sort of Lennon and McCartney
Enjoy the day and have an great year!!!
Hank Johnson D-Georgia just got quick applause. Good statement!
Baldwin: “No task is more important than determining if the President broke the law”.
Why can’t Nancy see that?
Oh, Happy Birthday dear, dear Jane. I hope you have a cake and ice cream day.
And Christy, I love that picture.
HJC
AGENDA
10:00 1:55 Smoke, BS, Self Agrandizement and other Pelosi cover
1:55 2:00 Hear from witnesses
Conyers – “I thank the members for their opening statements. Unfortunately, we are now out of time. I thank the witnesses for appearing here today and apologized that we were, due to time constraints, unable to engage in any questioning. We will now be taking a thirty minute break before the appearance of the second panel. All members will have the right to make full opening statements before the questioning of that panel too.”
Lots of people seem to be missing from the committee. D’s as well. Could it be that they are afraid to be seen taking any position on this? The ones who have shown up seem to be with the program.
Hmmm….The typical pattern on these opening statements usually alternates parties. We seem to have run out of Republics who want to defend Chimpy.
Nancy: See what?
Are the Repubs not speaking up for re-election?
because that would mean that the third most important task is……..?
I count 10 of 22 d’s and 5 of 17 r’s but I could be missing some.
or have more important things to do with their time?
Yep, they got nuthin’, and I think they are genuinely afraid. How long will it be before they change over from defending Bush to showing that the Democrats have been in on it all along?
Great insight, foothillsmike.
KagroX, as always, has a good run down on what’s going on.
Is there a Congressional Commandment that “Thou Shalt Not Speak In Terms Disparaging of Our Glorious Leader Whilst Within the Halls of Congress”?
I’m thinking it’s the GOP way of saying: “Nothing to see here folks, now move along.”
should we move the discussion of the hjc hearing to the new thread from dave?
Everyone keeps talking about the balances necessary between the three branches of government. What about FourthBranch Cheney?
Actually there is: (per Kagro)
When you get here please Digg this post!
thanks. No wonder Nancy doesn’t want to impeach. She’d be forced to do ’speechless impeachment’.
hows come the panel didn’t get asked questions and the moved on to the 2nd panel? this does not seem like the usual process.
happy happy b’day miss jane ;o) you look mahvelous!!! enjoy the day – do exactly what you want and don’t take no for an answer lol….. as for me i’m watching HJC on c-span…..
am very upset I missed the birthday thread but was in flight snd just landed
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANE!
now to get my luggage
Happy birthday Jane.
Who is Stephen Presser? Here’s Stephen Presser:
http://judiciary.senate.gov/ol…..601Pre.htm
Rabkin spoke like an idiot.
From David Swanson:
“Our hope lies in the likelihood that Conyers’ calculation is wrong when he supposes that Democrats will benefit from publicizing the case for impeachment and not suffer for failing to pursue it. If the public makes clear its demand for action, not just talk, the door that is cracking open may be very difficult to shut. “Stop the preaching and start impeaching” is a cheer that may be heard at a gathering of impeachment activists outside the Rayburn Building immediately following the hearing.”
And given the responses here, the public won’t make such demands.
Yeah Elliot Adams of Veterans for Peace !!!!
What’d Cindy Sheehan do to get tossed?
Many Happy Returns of the day!
So glad you are here, thank you so much for everything you do.
Have a very happy birthday and many more!
Happy Birthday, Jane!
Happy Birthday, Lady Jane. Thank you for creating this wonderful place. I think history will show that the Lake played an important part in reshaping our country from a fascist state to a functioning democracy. A great deal of work remains to be done, however. “…end of the beginning” and all that.
Again, Happy Birthday and a wish for many more.
Peace Love Light
Happy birthday, Jane.
Happy Birth Day Jane!

I sent you best birthday greetings and thanks for all you do for us—yesterday, *in propria persona* to be among the first well-wisher—by direct email.
In case you have not received or seen it, I repeat my wishes here.

Singing in chorus, cheek to cheek.’
