I got a call one evening from a guy who identified himself as Steve (I forget his last name), saying he was a “Special Forces historian.” He had been in contact with my commanding officer, looking for any logs or info about radio transmissions between the boats, An Thoi and the Coast Guard cutter in the area. My CO had referred him to me since I just happened to take a shift monitoring comms that day. The boats could hear An Thoi and us but An Thoi couldn’t hear them. So we relayed between the two. The Swift boat ops out of An Thoi were part of Operation Market Time, the coastal patrol part of the Mobile Riverine Force. They were also used by Phoenix teams going up into the area, using the river that divides VN and Cambodia. The boats were routinely being ambushed on the way back out and eventually almost led to a mutiny by the Swift crews. That’s another story. Steve made the mistake of assuming I was pro-Bush and proceeded to tell me that they (SBVT) were looking for any info that would throw suspicion on the overboard incident, specifically radio logs of comms between the boats and the cutter, which had a Medical Officer. We only had a corpsman. They wanted to show that the incident was a fabrication and that Rasmussen and Kerry were lying. I told him that the incident occurred as reported, that those logs had been destroyed years ago as part of the Navy’s routine records retention policies and then proceeded to read him the riot act. The ads had been out a while and had begun to be debunked so they were looking for anything to boost their crap. LCDR George Elliott was Commander, Coastal Division 11 and I knew him quite well. He even presented me with a Swift Officer-in-Charge pin, which I still have. I was extremely disappointed that he joined the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. I still think it was dishonourable for any of those guys to have associated themselves with that nest of cottonmouths. Bud Day, one of the original SBVT jerks who lives here in FL, is still a part of the slime machine known as America Watch, or whatever they call themselves today. Scumbag.

Well at least NBC cleared up why Obama canceled his planned visit to injured troups in Germany. He was asked not to by the pentagon since he was on a campaign trip. Since the McCain camp already jumped to negative conclusions about this, I’m sure they will clear it up. Mark Halperin probably has already done an update on this. (yeah, right!)
