Ah the good ol’ Berkeley Pit. The biggest Superfund cleanup site in the entire country. Of course it is NOT being cleaned up cuz no one even knows where to begin. While the mine was still active they pumped all the water out. But it has slowly been filling up since then.

The taxpayers are currently funding a cleanup here in Missoula that is associated with that Pit. The sludge from the Pit washed down the Clark Fork River and filled up the lake behind the Milltown Dam. That toxic sludge was contaminating all the local drinking wells. So, the dam has been removed, and they are removing somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 million cubic yards of this stuff and hauling a trainload of it back to Opportunity.

Opportunity - a small town built in the middle of a wasteland of black mine tailings that are almost as toxic as the water in the Pit. Nothing grows on it. The sludge from Milltown isn’t as bad and grass will actually grow on it so putting it there will cover the tailings and keep them from blowing in the wind and contaminating everything and everyone in Opportunity.

What a mess.

Yep. They sold themselves to Kennecott Copper and they sold themsleves to a couple of other mega-corps and the final one was some big mining conglomerate in South America. And, doncha know - they cannot be held liable.

Unfortunately.

I guess that’s why Montanans are so leery of anyone mining stuff anymore. All those Canadian cyanide-heap-leach things are getting turned down right and left, and deservedly so. Thank goodness.

Without question (originally a Rockefeller operation). They are also long gone at this point. Bought by ARCO and then BP. Pulled out of Butte and Montana in 1983. Left a toxic legacy which contaminates much of western Montana. See here.
