Joke Line, on McCain's statement "Obama would rather lose a war in order to win an election:"
This is the ninth presidential campaign I've covered. I can't remember a more scurrilous statement by a major party candidate. It smacks of desperation. It renews questions about whether McCain has the right temperament for the presidency. How sad.
Is McCain's base turning? Is their narrative shifting from honorable to scurrilous, from barbecue to temperament, from war hero to sad?
Separately, McCain mocks the media:
Mock your base, McCain. That always works.

morning teddy
Amazing that he has the nerve to complain about the media, much less to mock them. Geez! As I asked yesterday … Ummmm, John …. what exactly is their relationship to you???
Hi Teddy!
I watched the video and I loved it! SWAK love! What’s not to love?
Pretty generous of the stingy old guy to help out the whippersnapper like that.
Hi dosido.
If McSame thinks that he’s not getting enough coverage, while would he cancel a media avail. Could it be that he’s not ready to be asked those deep questions without additional prep?
I love the title of this post. Classic!!
Sorry for the early OT, but this is too good:
Breaking: Novak cited after hitting pedestrian
Dugg
Hi Teddy !
NYT:
NYT
McStain must be soiling his Depends.
When that Treasonous Bastard Joke Line has bailed out, the shark has been jumped.
What could be next, Broder declaring he really doesn’t care for BarBQue?
The horror.
Its meanness and bad-temper perfectly suits McCain. I wonder if he’s learned the YouTube?
McBush.
Salon’s series on domestic surveillance under Chimpy. I don’t see how some congresscritters can redeem their reputations after the FISA vote, if this all turns out to be accurate.
Posted this downstairs on the Mukasey thread:
“I feel that this is on topic, but maybe a mod will disagree; Cass Susstein of the Obama campaign earns my “wanker of the day” (Atrios tm) for this (hat tip Big Tent Democrat @ Talk Left).
Basically, Susstein has been stating that the Obama DOJ will only prosecute “egregious” crimes in the Bush administration. This, while at the same time, Susstein feels that Bush did nothing wrong in the first place in regard to wireless wiretapping, extraordinary renditions and torture. [As an aside, I agree with BTD that Turley is wrong about just throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at the bums]
[….T]his [issue] is about accountability that we’re trying to achieve here and the Congress, allowing Rove (and Miers, for example, prior to that) to thumb their nose at them is along the same lines.
I wrote over at Hullabaloo that what I fear about Obama the most is that “reaching across the aisle” is becoming a goal in and among itself regardless of the facts. Does anyone else see it that way?”
In other words, the cave in on FISA seems to fall into the category of “can’t we all get along” and it appears that Susstein may have driven this cave in. Thoughts?
Whoops - replace Susstein with Sunstein.
Another edition of celebrity justice: hit & run, and Novakula gets cited and released?
The witness said that the guy rolledd off of the car’s windsheild. Novak says he didn’t see him. Um, riiiight!!
McCain’s base is deserting him, and his campaign is making videos that mock them for their Obambi-love.
How does he expect to reach the convention in St Paul?
How about some smoking gun type mugshots?
Perhaps - Novak does seem blind to the obvious.
With this
sorry, couldn’t resist
Could have done without the McCain campaign using Tucker Carlson quite so much in their ad, especially when he talks about the love a ninth-grade boy feels, the “can’t get up out of my seat” kind of love. Tucker with a stiffy is not an image I would ever put into a campaign ad, ever.
Hi Betsy — you’re tracking the new posts this morning, I see.
McC’s campaign is fascinating to watch. It seems to be imploding day by day and they still don’t change anything. You would think that they would try something new or a different approach but they just keep digging that hole. Works for me.
hey spacefish, the guy novak hit was an old guy. do ya think novak thought it was mccain, and took revenge after being used by the campaign to spread the false “veep pick this week” story?
His statement was indeed scurrilous, so BFD! More importantly, when will MSM or the LCD (lowest common denominator) public notice McBush’s IQ? Seems to me his current mental state (intelligence) compares badly against his 2000 campaign.
I’m sure it’s just the Real McCain. Remember how he mocks and insults his wife. He has every reason to assume he has the same relationship with the press.
I really didn’t get the meanness (except for maybe Tucker)but really, I felt the love. Itwas like a great big Valentine to Obama. “You made me love you…I didn’t want to do it, I didn’t want to do it…”
Maybe McGrumpy wants to be his VP?
Hi Tex!
Hahahaha. Did you see TDS the other night with the “correspondents” talking about their stiffies? Hilarious. “Maybe we should call him Barack Oboner!”
TDS knows mockery.
The media have done their best to promote McCain’s candidacy at the same time the Republican base and big Republican donors held off from any strong endorsements of him or money for him. Although they all do it, ABCNews, in particular, has been pathetic in its attempts to criticize Obama and pump up McCain. However despite the media’s best efforts, McCain and his campaign continue to implode. The Joe Klein piece is a sign that cracks are appearing in the media’s support of McCain largely I think because it is finally beginning to dawn on them that no matter what they do McCain is going to lose. In this, Klein serves as a useful barometer. He may be a rat but he is one that always angles to be among the first to leave a sinking ship.
McCain desperately attacks Obama for supporting genocide on the day the Democratic candidate is at the Israeli Holocaust Memorial, Yad Vashem.
Meanwhile his daughter, Meghan, shows cluelessness runs in the family. She puts up the Ramone’s “Bonzo Goes To Bitberg” on her campaign blog because she thinks that it’s title is “My Brain Was Upside Down” and she was having a “bad day”.
I wonder if Dad realized that Meghan was putting a virulent critique of the deified Republican’s visit to the grave site of Nazi SS killers. Wonder how the song is going over with the hard-core Wingers? Did Meghan make an appearance at the “Bleeding Red” Blog Fest to discuss her music choices and how her blog was helping (ahem) Daddy’s campaign?
McCain keeps talking about winning vs. losing and succeeding vs. failing in Iraq without knowing what the hell those words mean. Two people have given rather straightforward metrics.
Per President Bush:
We currently have more troops in Iraq than we did at the beginning of the surge. So by Bush’s own metric, thus far the surge is a dismal failure.
Per Osama bin Laden:
The condition of the U.S. economy is a testament to bin Laden’s success.
So, exactly where does McCain get off telling us that stopping twelve-billion dollar per month cash hemmorage in Iraq is “losing.” In fact, it is the best thing we can do to turn back bin Laden’s spectacular success.
It’s pretty much a requirement of right wing pundits that they have the ability to ignore reality. Novak just applied this talent to his driving skills.
Richard Lewis said something similar to KO on Countdown last nite — “why doesn’t he change the subject, start talking about the economy?” I think we all know the answer to that: foreign policy is McCain’s area of expertise, and he likes talking about it. He’s never had anyone say to him, “No, that’s wrong” because of his famous temper. So he’s not found out about Czechoslovakia, or been corrected when he talks about “the Iraq/Pakistan border.” or even been briefed on who is providing arms to terrorists (or al Qaida) in Iraq.
When you yell at people who correct you, you tend not to get corrected much. Everyone’s had a boss, or a cranky neighbor, or a father-in-law, or a Little League coach just like McCain: often in error, never in doubt.
a repeat from early am thread -
last week, I heard uber-riblicker David Gregory characterize the campaign as “faltering”
I wish they would share their gift for satire with their co-citymates at The New Yorker.
Once you accept that war is peace the rest is easy.
Joke Line: The canary in The Village?
It appears at least CBS and Katie Couric are smarting from the accusation of Obama bias. They completely edited out a huge McLame gaffe about the “surge” in an interview last night. Do you suppose they bought him sprinkly doughnuts as well?
McCain’s best hope in this election (besides electronic voting machines) is that the press will continue to ignore him.
If McCain’s campaign is hoping this will get the press to give him more coverage, then I hope it works because the more people see of McSame, the more they’ll be aghast by his ineptitude and incompetence. Even with the kid-glove treatment he gets from corporate media, this stuff’s bound to come through.
They probably noticed how the media turned on Obama after SNL did the bit about the media’s Obamalove and they hope it will work again for McCain. Of course Hillary wasn’t old and bat-shit crazy so she had that going for her — and the Reverend Wright stuff is played-out so McSame has to hope there’s going to be another PR nightmare emerging from the woodwork, but it might not be as easy for lightning to strike twice.
Do you think that TDS has a different audience, ie. purview than the New Yorker? I’ve always had a slight problem with Ivory Tower Anybodys. You would thing that it would be easier to see the Big Picture from such a lofty view, but it doesn’t work that way I think. Can’t see the cockroaches scurrying around down at the bottom.
Or something.
And, how do you see West Coast satire as being different from East Coast. Is there a difference. Just wondering.
“Mr. McCain’s initial reaction was not encouraging. “What do you want, you little jerks?” he asked, using what his staff members say is a term of endearment.”
So just to be clear, when I say that Krusty McLame is a pastey-assed senile old fart it’s actually a term of endearment.
check out c and l for mccain covers. funny.
We should have a “terms of endearment” contest.
ok firedogs, our Teddy has inspired me to try my first youtube/video -
I’m using 5 year old XP - is there a youtube for dummies program online I can use ?
Vanity Fair responds.
For you from the Straight Story starring Richard Farnsworth.

y’all are killing me :D
loved that film, and the late richard farnsworth
I think the key issue on the reversal of the FISA vote/Obama is that the telecoms are massively underwriting the presidential nominating conventions.
While the campaigns are under strict guidelines for fund raising, the conventions are not operating under those funding rules. So the telecoms were solicited by (among others) Jello Jay for tens of million$. Obama got the message. He had to play the game.
