"What is it, some kind of Hell Mouth?" asked Teddy.
Conservative columnist Bob Novak hit a pedestrian at 18th and K this morning, then tried to escape but was stopped by a bicyclist, Politico reports. Novak claims not to have known he hit the pedestrian, but according to the cyclist, Harkins Cunningham partner David Bono, the pedestrian was "splayed onto the windshield", and that after stopping, Novak "[kept] trying to get away."
Novak was already an aggressive driver who told the Post that he hates "jaywalkers" and would like to run them over, "but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that."
Trying desperately to get home before sunrise, no doubt.
Karma seems to have played a role here, because this is the guy who chased him down, who could be helpful in refuting the claim that Novak "didn't know he hit him."
Somewhere, Joe Wilson is laughing.

I would have to revise my opinion of Novak if the pedestrian he hit was, in fact, Hitchens.
Sweet! Karma is right on the spot this time!
Too bad Bono [the witness] can’t be the pedestrian’s lawyer.
Hey, Jane, hey Teddy!
Teddy, you are spot on.
I always thought that Novakula had to be home before dawn.
Hi Kathryn & Teddy too…
I’ll bet he knows one.
Instant Karma

Why is it certain people think they don’t HAVE to follow the rules or that the rules DON’T apply to them…..
AND when they finally get to court…. they demand special consideration… would love to hear that phrase…..”Book’em Danno”
Was he cited for hit and run?
oopsie didnt see you, great minds etc…”g”
He can recommend a good attorney to sue Novak, though. After all the crap he’s pulled the only thing the law can pin on him is a hit and run. Sad commentary.
First of all, I hope the pedestrian is okay.
And second, Bob should know that running away after hitting a pedestrian isn’t quite the same thing as walking off the set after a “tough” question.
but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that.
So, proof that he has moved away from being compassionate? I know, I know…
This story is Rich! And, I love that the witness has character.
on his way to his am. cocktail meeting? SOP
hey Alfonse Capone, died in prison……….income tax evasion
OMG this is real. Jane I thought it was snark. Oh yes karma is a bitch.
mwahaha!
Yeah I know he’s old and was just involved in an incident that was stressful, but in that video he looks like he’s…well, no stranger to a couple of Manhattans.
Perhaps he will be sued so badly that he’ll become one of the whiny Americans who can’t afford to drive a car.
Cited for failure to yield? WTF!?!?! He should be in jail for a hit and run, his driver’s license revoked and his corvette convertible impounded.
“well he’s not dead and that’s the main thing”
wow lots of compassion there. i suppose the ped should apologize?
When to they add him to the Bush pardon list?
He just outs them in his column and lets someone else do the messy stuff. [/s]
Any agressive driver who has a beef against pedestrians, is certainly a cyclist hater…
Oh, the irony, and the Karma…
I hope the pedestrian is allright, and that Novakula pays through the nose.
It’s not like he’s a democrat protesting the war.
A concierge at 1700 K Street said that she saw a bicyclist yelling and walked outside to see what the commotion was about.
“This guy hit somebody and he won’t stop so I’m going to stay here until the police come,” Aleta Petty quoted the unnamed bicyclist as saying, as he stood in K Street, blocking traffic.
fukkkkkker
Actually, he was released from prison in 1939.
He died in 1947.
I always knew Novakula had killer instinct.
from the ACLU
The legislation Mukasey is pushing would also subvert the Constitution, authorize indefinite detention, and permanently conceal the Bush administration’s systemic torture and abuse of detainees. Petition to congress critters.
Chuck Schumer’s good friend Mukasey is such anice guy.
Shorter Novak: I thought it was a large bug or maybe a Democrat.
What I don’t understand is why Novak was released on a citation and allowed to drive away. In California ANY hit-and-run involves both an arrest and a drug/alcohol test…and any injury-accident requires the vehicle to be towed as part of the investigation.
oh goodness, didn’t know about the black corvette - dear god, the man is a grotesque caracture
Jane:
Heh. Glad I didn’t have a mouthful of cereal when I read that line.
Does it strike anyone else as, um, compensatory that Novakula drives a ‘vette?
That would be Pro Bono representation
Both CNN and the WaPo have “no big deal” stories up now-we’ll see if that changes over the next couple hours. Politico’s report is the most detailed so far. Seems there were LOTS of witnesses and Novak may be fucked.
More Shorter Novak: So that’s what that bumping sound I keep getting means.
Not to worry. The Decider has his pardon papers ready.
Isn’t the real crime here, that Novak’s driving a ‘Vette? Black, of course.
Yeah. I didn’t get that either. But Novak is a lyin’ sack, and we only heard his version of what he was cited with. After all, in that same interview he said he didn’t see the walker. yikes! what a scumbag. I hope the reporter went back and talked to the cop.
I pitty the Corvette.
OMG! This is karmalicious enough to emerge from my lurking/skimming to virutally jump up and down in glee.
Of course, it will be like Limbaugh’s drug use and Bill Bennett’s gamblihg issues - IOKIYAR.
BWA-HA-HA-HA, anyway.
Why, these are the elites. They live in a very different world.
and maligning race car drivers. what a body orifice he is. Race car drivers are among the most safety conscious on the roads. ugh!
thanks for heads up…syphlis not pretty however
I’m sure that Novak is more concerned about the condition of his ‘vette than some plain old person walking on the street.
Just imagine the sack of secrets Novak possesses. Ink’s not even dry yet on the pardon papers.
i wonder if he sits on TELEPHONE books to see over the steering wheel
From the articles it appears that it’s a classic hit-and-run case. Novak drove on for almost an entire block (the accident occurred at the intersection of 18th and K) and Bono stopped Novakula with his bike in front of 1700 K. Should be lots of witnesses to where he stopped since it backed up traffic.
I would imagine that they’re just putting their ducks in a row. The statement from the bicyclist is pretty damning, though. If the victim corroborates the bicyclist’s version, or if more witnesses come forward, I would guess that the grand jury will have a look at it.
And a convertible.
I always thought this was his car.
I am still in awe over the cajones it took to stop a supervillain maniac with a bike! Bono the Bike Crusader must be an awesome attorney! He’s my new hero!!!
I wonder if the officers got the old “do you know who I am” treatment. Hope he gave them a problem so they can testify to that in court.
http://theautomaticearth.blogspot.com/
worth a read
Is this federal jurisidiction in DC? That might explain things. Anything short of causing organ failure is not a crime.
Still more shorter Novak: Clearly this pedestrian was out to get me.
In what venue? Is there a chance of this being pursued? Because as of now Novak has gotten away with a ticket when he should have been charged with a crime.
I sure hope you’re right. At first, I thought he wasn’t arrested because he only moved a short distance before he [was] stopped. But, no, it was a whole block! And a very trustworthy witness contradicting Novak’s story, saying Novak kept trying to leave after he stopped him…the guy should be in jail NOW. (pardon me for yelling).
The man is loathsome.
And his hatred of jaywalkers is so notorious that the local tv reporter mentioned it on air! Oh, I’d like to prosecute this one!
And more: It wasn’t hit and run. It was more like staying the course.
spew!
Rolling mid-life crisis.
I’m thinking civil here.
707!
I’m still waiting for the pedestrian to apologize from the hospital…
And what exactly was Novackula doing on K street anyway?
The poor guy had to get mowed down, otherwise it would be a case of cut-and-run. GOP version: hit and run.
There have been so many news stories where I thought, Oh, we have [them] now!
Lot’s of questions and no answers yet, but, why are you leaning toward civil?
And finally: This is vastly overblown. The Corvette wasn’t even scratched.
18th and Massachusetts Avenue is where Kirkpatrick & Lockhart is located, the law firm where former Attorney General Dick Thornburgh is a partner.
There is also the University Club nearby — but I think it is a bit more liberal in tone than these gentlemen are.
I guess he looked at the guy on his windshield like any other undesirable media event. If you ignore it, it will go away.
The bicyclist said to Novak that he hit a pedestrian and Novak responded that he didn’t see the guy. Are there any female peds in DC
Yeah, but in another 8-10 hours, we’ve lost the window for a blood test. Any way for counsel for the victim to file an order for emergency relief for a blood test before it’s too late?
One of the odd but cool legal tactics I picked up here at fdl is that if someone has been drinking and involved in an accident they should immediately go to the nearest bar and order several shots of whiskey to steady their nerves. This effectively invalidates any alcohol testing because you can’t distinguish between what was imbibed before and after the accident. If Novak was not tested, he has had plenty of time to steady his nerves so to speak.
Kind of like the victim ofv the “shooter”?
In fact, I wonder if Novak will insist on an apology from the guy crossing on a GREEN walk sign at an intersection!
Which means that Novak either ran a red, or made an illegal right turn (turning while the intersection was not clear of pedestrians).
I don’t understand why Novak wasn’t tested, and why his car wasn’t impounded because of the hit and run. What is the law in DC. Sorry if this has already been covered.
Absolutely, but I think some drugs can be timed fairly accurately by their known breakdown rates and products.
On the other hand, I suppose it’s possible that they used a portable breathalyzer on him. It’s not like he’d tell the press if they did.
Thanks Jane.
I couldn’t believe the headline when I read it.
“Failure to Yield”? Rather mild, it seems, if the pedestrian went to hospital and/or was seriously injured. Sobriety test results were what?
In order to be splayed across little Bobby Novak’s windshield, the man Novak hit would have had to navigate over or through the sharp nose and long hood of his Corvette. Which is generally awkward for one’s kneecaps, hips and spleen. The windshield, too, is rather unfriendly to one’s nose and dental work. Descending from there to the ground, presumably while still in the cross walk, though the light may have changed from red to green, is painful all round.
17th and K is among the busiest of morning intersections. Several roads come to together nearby and there’s a Metro station within a block. It is home to multiple coffee shops and stores, offices, bars, the Mayflower Hotel, a Secret Service office and several thousand lobbyists and their co-workers.
Let’s hypothesize on why Novakula might credibly be able say he hadn’t noticed hitting a man so hard he plunged into his windshield:
1. He likes bourbon on his Cornflakes.
2. He was on his cell doing a Bill O’Really and didn’t have both hands on his wheel.
3. He was dictating his resignation to the Post prior to returning home to Transylvania.
4. He was re-enacting the story of Hugh Grant and his white Corvette in Hollywood. (Remember, the Mayflower was around the corner.)
5. He’s old and wasn’t paying attention and he didn’t kill the guy for Chris’ sake, so who cares?
The scene of the crime is also equidistant between the White House and AEI.
digg
Novak wasn’t drunk. He’s already a fucking bundle of nerves; alcohol would only make him a better driver.
Naw, if that happened, he’d blame it all on trial lawyers. No responsibility on HIS part: he’s a Republican, don’t ya know.
Good one!!!
Bush has dropped his opposition to the foreclosure legislation now that it has a provision that fingerprints can now be taken for anyone applying for a mortgage. Drip by drip the rights of the people are being stripped.
New Jane a couple of flights upstairs with another Short Ride spank.
Actually, the pedestrian was Harry Wittington, and he immediately apologized to Novak for standing in the way of his Corvette.
I should have said 18th and K, which, while busy, isn’t as busy as Connecticut/Farragut Sq/17th and K. Novakula couldn’t have missed the guy on his windshield. Obviously. I assume he panicked and raced ahead; his office at the Post is at 15th and L. He calmed down, while remembering that the myriad street cameras would have caught him in the act.
Too bad for him he wasn’t driving a dark navy SUV with darkened windows. No one would have seen anysink, or dared mention it if they had.
The bicyclist who stopped busy and insistent traffic on K Street to help the injured man deserves a medal. Mr. Novak almost certainly deserves more than a failure to yield. How about leaving the scene of an accident for starters? And why (apparently) no alcohol/drug test? This is an unusual accident, a more unusual “explanation” and DC is full of all night events at which liquor (and reportedly drugs) are frequently served.
Because we all know that mortgage fraud is what caused the financial crisis/meltdown. But now the fraudsters will be collecting fingerprints on the debtors when it should be the other way round. Debtors should be collecting fingerprints and Social Security numbers from loan officers and mortgage brokers, and getting their credit scores and doing criminal background checks.
Can’t wait to see what these Dems will do to reform the No Creditor Left Behind Bankruptcy Law. Will it authorize even higher fees and interest rates, and give creditors more power to hound debtors to hell and back again?
Hugh, you are in fine form.
The man is 77 years old, for crying out loud! Time to take the corvette away! We took my mother’s car away before she hit 75 because she was just a very bad driver by then!
An old guy with a Corvette = putting his dick on wheels.
I am sure there will be some “medication” that he is taking that will get him off. What a creep.

Mission to 18th and K
The decision of a 66 year old pedestrian to splay himself across the innocent windshield of columnist Robert Novak’s Corvette convertible on July 23, 2008 was made routinely, at a low level of intellectual consideration and attention, without the columnist’s knowledge. Remarkably, this produced a firestorm of media attention that has yet to subside.
Witnesses’ reports that Novak drove directly into the pedestrian, who was crossing on the “Walk” signal, that the pedestrian was splayed across the windshield involuntarily, as a result of being struck by Novak’s vehicle, and that Novak then drove away from the scene of the hit-and-run until a witness on a bicycle chased Novak, having to repeatedly block his vehicle to prevent Novak’s attempts to escape from the scene were highly unlikely, regarded by the columnist as less than definitive, and it is doubtful that Novak ever saw him. Certainly officers on 18th Street did not, before they arrived at the downtown address, attributing Novak’s behavior to “reckless driving” and issuing a $50 citation.
That witnesses reports relied on the reports of a bicycle riding, knapsack wearing, possibly liberal and environmentalist lawyer made Novak’s mission, moments earlier, the basis of unhinged Democratic accusations of “hitting a 66-year old man who was legally crossing the street” and “driving away after an accident victim was spread across the hood of your car”, though these accusations were apparently forgotten by the time Novak was faced with reporters at the scene, and in response to their questions, tersely spoke.
