First, hints Dobson might endorse McCain, burying a long-held hatchet, but at what price?
Then, disaffected GOP activists crop up. And CQ details how the Reagan coalition between fiscal and social conservatives and rabid interest groups is failing because McCain is not their first choice.
Suddenly, the Obama/McCain megachurch summit takes on new meaning — as a catalyst for Dobson’s conversion as much as McCain trying to wheeze toward the finish line.
But what’s in it for Obama and Warren?
Whatever the strategery, Team McCain has deployed Operation Better Half…impending BBQ alert, anyone?

F I T Z !!!
Good Morning Christy – hope you’re feeling better
love, love, love that that diabolical prig Dobson is forced in to a ‘me too’ corner :D
I find it rather amusing myself that he’s in the Amen corner as opposed to leading the charge. *g*
It just goes to show what a power monger Dobson is, he threw a major fit about McCain until the dollar signs came to mind.
What a whore.
These kind of people make me want to puke.
I may not have many principles but I stick by them.
Morning, Christy. Hope all of you are well.
Can’t help noticing that Cindy is wearing a “flip” – when did that come back?
Hi Christy!
Gee. BarBQ Alert time. Cindy better hop to & start scrubbin that grill, heh.
Then the manicure, oh dear, this isn’t right. Where are all the help? Deported, you say? Well I NEVER. Retrieve them this INSTANT!
We are all feeling much, much better here these days. Thanks for asking.
you’re the very 1st to know ;->
Dig down in the box for your prize, wayyyy down at the bottom. Is it marked NO LEAD OR MAGNETS? or #%$&?
omg, when she finally smiles, it’s worse. a little reminiscent of KCouric. ya think? all that $$ and they try so hard to look sooooo NOTrich.
it’s not working, Cin.
(pardon (ha!) my personal OT to Bustednuckes….honey, I read some of your stuff last night, that Nahant and Selise shared at Late Night. Very, very funny stuff. I was impressed! Dude!)
The good news of the day: seniors are having more sex these days. If nothing else, I suppose there’s always whooppee… *g*
look, in the pic, how reluctant McC is to touch the …. commoners.
interesting. is that his smile of the day?
this is not working either.
those look like staff members. i recognize one from the telly the other day.
Wow, maybe Cindy should run for President. After all, she’s perfect.
Megachurches? Didn’t those used to be called whited sepulchers? I can see right there the attraction for Obama and McCain.
it’s the only thing left that’s free.
Geez, I need to get out more :)
McBush commenting on Obama’s trip:
“Surge, surge, surge,
Surge is the word
Don’t you know about the surge?
Everybody knows that the surge is the word!
Surge, surge, surge- Surge is the word”
lather, rinse, repeat as necessary.
oh meow.
So glad you and family are feeling better Christy.
If I stay here, I’m gonna ruin your nice thread by gittin more & more catty.
Caint stand that candy-date there.
Besides, the Mr. here has started applying the masking tape around my freshly scrubbed walls. It’s time. Groan. We will be soooo happy when this painting is done.
Makes ya wonder. Would realtors’ off-white improve mcsame’s complexshun?
Yep, with Viagra and such, we can’t even get a group together for Tuesday night bingo, here at the home.
Word is from people who know her that Cindy McCain is a very sweet, very decent person — who just happened to marry an egotistical ass who wanted more than anything to run for president. Lots of rumors about McCain that have swirled around AZ for years about him being an ass, but I have rarely heard bad anything about her, even after the drug addiction issues that cropped up after her back surgeries. He was an absentee husband and father for years, and word is that she was a fantastic mom to kids that rarely saw their father.
Maybe folks in AZ can speak more thoroughly on that, but honestly, I have only heard nice things about her when I’ve asked around. Which is why I referred to her above as the “better half.” I think she most likely is…by far…in that pair. *g*
There is absolutely NOTHING mcsame can utter that will upstage the pictures from that trip. I have never seen Petraeus smile before. Have you? and flanked by bipartisonship in the person of Obama and Hagel. And the 3-pointer. And the genuine smiles of the troops, most especially including the ones who assume they’re probably not in camera range.
eat yer heart out mccaint, & go court dobson. ewwwww. and don’t forget to compliment Cin on HER flip. Hmmm. Wonder if that’s symbolic.
Yep, with Viagra and such, we can’t even get a group together for Tuesday night bingo, here at the home.
My advice – corner the Gatorade and cigarette markets…
LOL. G’morning everyone — well, it must still be morning somewhere.
Oh, honey, don’t even get me started on this one! *g*
Great post, Christy.
Adie @ 20: I just scrolled through a lot of the pictures from the AP slideshow on Obama’s trip. It’s staggering how upbeat everyone appears. The only time Obama looks exasperated is in a couple of shots where he is with Ryan Crocker. I was really hoping to find a picture with a desert background similar to the pictures from McSame’s appearance when LIEberman had to correct him about al Qaeda being in Iran. I haven’t found anything just right, yet, but would love to be able to put up such a matched pair for comparison of the effects of Obama and McCain visiting the area.
Thanks much for the update and fleshing out the picture. You can see the tension on her face – always. Makes one wonder what she has to endure from that guy. I have no respect for him. Pity maybe, and stark terror that he might win, because I really do think he’s slipping mentally, and he already is infamous for the nasty temper. We’ve been through that. We don’t need another. We need a competent leader.
Soooo, we keep the shoulders to the wheel, eh? Together.
Thank you for all your hard work and wonderful generosity with your gifts. Love your posts.
P. E. A. C. E.
Wheezing toward the finish is so funny that I will not forget to repeat it whenever I can. McCant’s campaign has gone so far over the edge so early that they look every bit like the fools they are. Does anyone think Obama should apologize for causing high gas prices?
That flip haircut makes her look a lot less like a trollop and more like June Cleaver. Next She’ll be appearing in an apron to serve cookies and cocoa to the press.
Got a linky to those for lazy folks like me?
Tried to find the Ray Charles/Betty Carter version but here’s Dr John and Ricky Lee Jones
crikey ! – that “Better Half” link – 5 pages of sunshine, lollipops, and roses . . .because the 2 pages the same fluffer wrote in February just wasn’t enough
geesh, she even used “reserved” in the heading again – dear god, is Little GOlden Books supplying the stylebook ?
gonna google now and see if the same riblicker has written anything about Michelle Obama
Honest to Jebus, Christy, I have no idea what you’re saying.
Yes. Amazing slide show.
fwiw, I suspected from viewing all i could find, that Obama was diligent about avoiding have the trip appear to be a costume party, a la Junior & McSame.
It seems to have worked. Lots of business-like shots of meetings with important leaders on all sides; comraderie when appropriate; serious – very serious indeed when appropriate; gloriously, sincerely touching with the troops.
Then to turn on telly yestidie and hear Mrs Greenspan carping endlessly at having been denied access to the party. Priceless!
Tell congress to take some Vi*gra! Probable problematic side effects, loss of hearing and diminished sight….. Congress already suffers from! As with the long term effects of failed energy policies, or lack of an energy policy since 1973′ the ingestion of vi*gra and it long term effect might do the same; “Kill people!” Congress, erectile dysfunction, (yes) and testicular fortitude (not)!
Corporate T(r)eason, “Executive Oil” and the “Iraq Oil Plot!” What a deal for America and Iraq?
Hope Dobson and McBush are happy together….Are gifts in order? Are they registered?
It’s pretty simple really: there have been a lot of weird machinations, flips and maneuvers in GOP circles over the last week. And suddenly, they are starting to make sense: McCain’s campaign is wheezing a bit more loudly, so the GOP is starting to crack the cirlce the wagons whip on folks like Dobson and the NRA.
And McCain’s campaign has sent Cindy out on a PR tour to distract the media while they try and come up with something better. Make sense?
Geez, I need to stay in more :)
So are you saying it’s a flip flop?
May I recommend you read Christy at #19. I learned plenty good I hadn’t known before.
Obama sinkin the thirty footer will win him another two points in the polls.
jump shot, or putt?
Last I heard, they’re still trying to figure out how to fill out the licence form.
From “the better half” link:
“McCain, white-haired and 42, walked across the ballroom like a “guided missile” in the direction of the young blonde.
Cindy, 24, was there with her parents. By that time, she’d earned a master’s degree and was teaching disabled children at a public school in Phoenix.
Her youth and her innocence must have been part of her appeal, Lakeland says: “He had just come out of hell, and his marriage had fallen apart, and I think he really saw Cindy as a chance to really begin over again.”
They started dating.”
Bwahahahahahaha
Yes.
clean swish 3-pointer, dead on. no putz.
Now it does. I like inside baseball as much as the next political nerd, but that one was a litte too cryptic for my sleep-deprived brain.
On a partialy related note, I like what Obama is doing with the Megachurch thing: removing the GOP’s ability to say “Democrat = ahteist!” while showing the freaky deaky right wing of the GOP as the theocrats they are. Serves to disarm one of the their talking points while isolating the True Believers in their own, Domionist ghetto.
Providing he doesn’t screw it up, that is.
lots here at his fanzine
707!
Do you think that a McCain endorcement by Mr Focus on the Family might not add a few more exclamation points after the label of hipocracy?
I’m waiting for someone to point out that McCurly headed the “gang of 14″ opposing the Alito nomination, along with Moe Lieberman, and even Lindsey “Larry” Graham for awhile. The Three ‘extorted Bush’ Stooges.
Surely the Bush gang have more NSA dirt on McLobbyist and these guys that they probably hired an executive landscaper.
After all, Watergate was all about gathering dirt on political enemies, and Cheney is Nixon squared, err, cubed.
It completely explains the resulting: hugs, kisses, and McFlipFlops, over the past 3 years.
Jump shot – nothing but net.
If it comes through, I do. But, at the moment, the back and forth flirting between the two just has that extra whiff of eau de waffle. Which is why I thought mentioning it would be extra amusing…
Her youth and her innocence must have been part of her appeal. . .
Strangest euphamism I’ve ever seen for ‘nice rack’.
Wonder what the “focus on the family” demographics look like? Geezer City?
I’m surprised no one has mentioned that McCain needs to visit the Iraq-Afghanistan border before making policy statements about it.
Serously though, I think the Obama campaign should point out that we need to repair relations with our traditional European allies and challenge McCain to go talk talk to the German people. We might get to see the Brandenburg Gate painted putrid green and an audience of hundreds.
Damn…that should have come with a spew alert. *g*
Thanks!! As I looked at these, I wondered how those meeting with him are experiencing an American presidential hopeful (!) who doesn’t smirk and, I’m guessing, doesn’t condescend.
Where is the slideshow, Jim?
There was a “Real Sports” profile on HBO on Obama’s hoops habit that was really well done a few weeks back. Tried to find it on YouTube the other day, but HBO doesn’t have it up, I don’t think. If anyone knows where they might have that video, it’s worth a watch — the interview was one of the better “not politics, but about the person” kind of discussions that have been done this political season. Anyone see that one?
all the while McWhiteguycan’tjump throws up brick after brick, clanging front iron.
can’t quite picture Obama chortling, “well, goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter, heh-heh, heh-heh”
JERUSALEM — A lone Palestinian driving a heavy construction backhoe went on a short rampage Tuesday afternoon, smashing into a bus and several cars before being shot dead within view of the Jerusalem hotel where Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is expected to stay this evening.
At least 16 people were injured before a driver and a police officer shot the attacker.
(From a story linked at Huffington)
It’s fascinating to watch the meeja dance around the pulsatingly obvious fact that a 42 year-old, self-centered, copper-plated bastard in the midst of a raging midlife crisis married a hot, blonde 24 year-old rich girl and somehow didn’t once think about nailing her. Nope, McCain was only thinking about healing his life or moving on from being a POW or some such shit.
The last time I dated someone over a decade younger than me, my toughts weren’t entirely transcendent and pure, but then I’m a dirty hippe Democrat.
Thanks.
And thanks for this post.
Really must scoot now. Feeling guilty typing away in my jammies while honey tapes the wall edges. Wish us luck. We’re not pros. That’s for sure. *g*
Huff Post has Obama slide show up on current front page – ;~)
after a wide casting call, they’ve finally found someone to fill the late Heath Ledger’s shoes as the Joker in the next Batman film.
This might be it? Here.
Can ya say “Lame Duck?”
The Politico — GOP senators have been freed to vote as they wish, even against the president: “Republican Senate leaders — terrified by the prospect of losing five or more seats in November — have freed their members to vote however they need to vote to get reelected, even if that means bucking the president or the party’s leadership. On at least four votes over the past month — Medicare, housing, the GI Bill and the Farm Bill — Republican leaders haven’t even bothered whipping members to toe the party line or back President Bush’s veto threats.”
Maybe this?
No kidding! I am still waiting for someone to tell me that remark was apocryphal, and that even Junior couldn’t possibly have said something so crass.
Repub Senator Pat Roberts said sadly the other day that there are no “safe” Repub seats in this election. :)
Awwww, isn’t that a shame. Let’s think of this as an opportunity to help some of our Blue America candidates show them the door, shall we? *g* More like Donna Edwards, please…
McBush seems convinced that this “I supported the surge and he didn’t” line is gonna win the election for him.
Wonder if he has a plan B-just in case no one gives a shit?
Donna is just great – not only smart but her smile lights up a whole room. She’s is going to really be good in Congress and she is ours!
Concerned aids have begun measuring decreases in the president’s stature daily. He’s down to two feet seven inches and shrinking faster.
It seems that Ed Gillespie just doesn’t have the Rover whip maneuver at his disposal in terms of turning off the fundraising tap. What a sad, sad shame…
Not.
Obama wants a surge in Afghanistan–McBush ain’t sure cause it would take away from his FAVE surge in Iraq…..just goes ta show- ya can’t surge all of the people all of the time
The slideshow is also here.
Reflecting further on Christy’s comments about Cindy, I wonder if Cindy has executed a power of attorney for medical decisions for him. That could make for some interesting Constitutional drama if he were elected, became medically unstable and the rest of the administration fought her in trying to get him the proper help he would need because they wouldn’t want to admit how far gone he was. Christy’s comments make me think Cindy just might be more responsible in that situation than Nancy Reagan was.
As for McLame’s age I saw all I needed when little Cindy had to hold his hand to keep the boy wonder from stumbling down the steps of their private jet.
John McCain live on MSNBC & Fox, bumbling his way through a campaign appearance, bashing Obama and praising AARP members in his audience. Pathetic, as always.
I note that the FISA Amendments Act was not one of these.
Guess ya have ta be able ta turn it ON before you can turn it OFF?
Any mention of the SURGE?
McBush on the tube now. Same noun verb surge crap. Said “Obama has just completed his first trip to Afghanistan I wonder if he is going to have the courage to reverse his position”
Obama
Same tune- different war:
AMMAN, Jordan – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Tuesday that security in Iraq has improved and that the United States urgently needs to turn its attention to Afghanistan.
“There is security progress, but now we need a political solution” in Iraq, Obama said in the first news conference of his highly publicized trip abroad. Afghanistan is now the “central front in the war against terrorism,” he added.
“The situation in Afghanistan is perilous and urgent,” he said. “We must act now to reverse a deteriorating situation.”
Perfect!! (Thanks, NPB.)
Nah, McAncient is having difficulty staying on his advocacy of more nuclear power plants and offshore oil platforms. America’s Uncle Fester – pitiful.
Spencer has a new post ready for consumption if/when you’re ready.
chuckling my blue butt off watching that
his public appearances always remind me of the boring shop teacher having to teach a sex ed class
Is he starting to remind anyone else of a sort of Bob Dole redux? I don’t want to discount his chances, or start seeming like this is over — because it isn’t, not even close. But I’m talking demeanor — anyone else see the repetitive tic thing that Dole got from days and days on end on the campaign trail creeping in for McCain? Or is it just me…
Nope… know people who used to work for TriCare (military insurance) who call CindyLou the B*tch….. in ALL caps….. snippy snotty behavior is well know here in AZ….
Yep
I got that Deja Vu experience a couple of weeks ago..
How could dems be so lucky as to run against Bob Dole TWICE in the same century?
McBush already booking comedy gigs and Viagra ads for after he loses the election.
To a room full of nuns
Hmmmm…most of the folks that I know who know her knew her through teaching and/or school work, so there may be a difference there. Thanks, katymine…interesting contrast.
Yes, he sounds ripe for another “hot bottled water for dehydrated babies” statement. On the other hand, Obama’s press conference this morning was masterful. Any sincere reporter would have to be awstruck by the sincerity, scope, and willingness to discuss, after what they are used to. Still, who knows what the MSM will make of either event.
Awwww…MSNBC just showed some baby duckling rescue footage from the town near where I grew up. Wonder if it was over by the city park? Played there a lot as a kid. *g*
There will come a point where the MSM can’t ignore Obama – don’t know when it will be – probably after the convention.
it is my understanding she was asking for coverage outside the policy or special things for others (like a Senator would do for constitutes) which are not covered. AND TriCare coverage is determined by Congress, “I’m wife of Senator McCain and I want X and want it now”…..
I thought Lieberman the attack chihuahuha was playing McCain’s other half (not necessarily the better one). Either side you look at ‘em, it ain’t too pretty.
I keep thinking back to that creepy cottage cheese and lime jello background event they staged in the crowd of maybe a hundred or so lukewarm “supporters” the night Obama clinched the Dem nomination. The staging differences were so startling it was almost painful in terms of campaign preparedness and advance thought and work.
I kept thinking the McCain stuff would improve, but it really hasn’t all that much. And I wonder why there hasn’t been more discussion of that? The insider panic within the GOP that led to his internal campaign shake-up and elevating Schmidt, and all the whispers that Mike Murphy might be coming back as well — even though he’s squashed that a coupla times — it’s all just weird. I just can’t get a bead on whether they are really this bumbling and moronic, or whether it’s a deliberate lowering expectations effort in advance of the fall push. Or something else.
OT the NYMEX crude oil near future is trading at $126.00. If Congress can act to put curbs on excessive speculation there is a chance of getting this thing under control.
The Obama campaign is kickin flabby ol ass daily–The McBush campaign is an embarassment- and goopers know it…
They can’t get out of the GW Bush buttsucking role they played in the primaries- scared shitless to annoy big money goopers- and their candidate is as inspiring as oatmeal.
Maybe he doesn’t want to peak to soon, There is just so much viagra can do
McCain should really throw Holy Joe under the bus. No perhaps not. I can’t decide.
It is a symptom of the McBush disease that he thinks Lieberweasel is helping him.
I think they’re giving him plenty of coverage, but I don’t get their frank admission that any tiny gaffe by Obama will be fatal, whereas McCain has made the most absurd statements since George Bush or Dan Quayle.
While the McCain camp is complaining about the lack of coverage of him, I think the news are actually doing them a favor.
I’m old enough to remember the Nixon – Kennedy debates and have some hopes that the debates this year will have a similar effect. McCain has been consistently trying to portray Obama as a greenhorn, which is what Nixon did regarding Kennedy. The debates revealed the opposite, even to a bunch of uncommitted voter types. I think the debates this year could be even more decisive for those who only begin to pay attention after Labor Day.
Maybe the campaign should throw mcCain under the bus
The story line of those debates was that Nixon lost because he didn’t shave frequently enough. Those who heard the debates on the RADIO were convinced Nixon won…
That’s a tricky move.
Oh McCain gets plenty of chuckles from his 30 percenters singing “bomb iran.” Really sick homicidal stuff in my opinion.
I remember a sweat thing too.
Yeah- Tricky Dick was a sweater from way back!
How shallow and sexist is that?
And what? Make Larry Craig the nominee?
I think their only decision was that teleprompter speeches and green backgrounds are to be avoided at all costs.
Lieberchihuahua
I swear he is picking up Bush’s speech patterns. Especially when he was crying on MNBC interview with meridath the other day….someone is coaching him to look & sound (almost) like Bush…I swear…
Well first they’d have to get Dobson to cure Craig of his wide stance problem—but that’s not difficult- Dobson’s cured millions.
Does Lieberweasel figure that McBush is gonna win and make him back up King- or does he just have a suicidal tendancy?
naughty,naughty, naughty boy>
Interesting, isn’t it? Have you noticed that Rachel sometimes sounds exactly like Keith? I mean, she really does. I could write it off to The Same Writers, but, I suspect it’s more than that. It’s either intentional or it’s a syndrome of some sort.
This can not be McUnderstated…
McExtorted opposed Bush Alito nomination and headed the gang of 14, all McSame roads lead back to this critical decision to oppose the great and powerful Oz.
Why is anyone surprised that McFlop flipped?
Hypocrite is not the key word, ‘blackmailed’ is.
He knows that if mcSame loses he’ll just go back to chasing
Susan Collins
Yes, I’ve heard that. Still, Nixon had placed so much emphasis on his qualifications compared to those of Kennedy, that Kennedy’s performance was enough to turn that tide in a close election. I think the difference in knowledge and abilities in the present case should be even more decisive.
Still, I’ve been wrong many times. I wathced the Carter-Reagan debates and thought Carter beat the crap out of Reagan. Then I heard George Will rule on ABC that “there you go again” had demolished Carter. At the time, I didn’t know who Will was and thought he was supposed to be objective.
I’d be curious to know what Dobson’s “cure” consists of. Then again, maybe not. I think ol Larry’s going to try to show the world he’s capable of “protecting marriage.” He and Diaper Dave.
How close is Collins to losing her seat?
Last I heard she was running scared
Not very unfortunately. She’s actually gaining ground recently if I remember correctly
I think Dobson’s as old as McCreak. He just takes his clothes off and the patient is “cured”
Urgh Sounds like Tom Allen could use some help. Otherwise we’re stuck watching Collins and Lieberweasel hold hands on c-span.
I checked and Rasmussen has Collins at something like 51%. Allen needs help.
Man, with “Guys” like them everywhere, it’d be easy to “turn”.
McBush and Dobson- seventy year old powerhouses- are leading a geezer rebellion against the young and slender Obama who still remembers his name and phone number:
James Clayton “Jim” Dobson (born April 21, 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana) is an American evangelical Christian and chairman of the board of Focus on the Family, a nonprofit organization he founded in 1977, from which he has never drawn a salary, but which has promoted his related books and publications, yielding him substantial royalties.
Doesn’t he have a Ph’d in psychology or something like that?
What you don’t want to change Vitters diapers? And make sure the “right” cocktail is handy when he comes to the door?
Nate at 538 on Maine race:
Maine remains more viable as a competitive state, but is not really coming together for Tom Allen, as Rasmussen showed Susan Collins holding onto a 10-point lead whereas SMS Atlantic — in a now somewhat dated survey — had her ahead by fully 25 points. Allen’s fundraising has been quite good, and there is still a lot of money to be spent in this race, but I don’t see the angle for defeating Collins, as both Mainers and Collins are a little too sophisticated to be taken by the “Ooga Ooga Republican Bad!” line of argumentation.
Yes he does.
I watched the Kennedy-Nixon debates and I thought my guy (Kennedy) won, but it was close and anyone supporting Nixon could easily have gone the other way. Bunch of crap about Quemoy and Matsu. The debates were degraded and degrading from the get-go, and haven’t changed, unless if possible, for the worse.
I see some potential wiggle room in the rasmussen poll. If someone would get off their arses, and point out that rubber stamp susan=bush who has serious unfavorability ratings in Maine.
Hell, no! I’s uh somewhat never did, never will, kinda gal.
Oh, but, then I have to be responsible for myself. And, work hard to take care of myself also. So’s I can help everyone else, doncha know?
You’re probably right about debates. I’d rather have them stake the election on shooting a game of “horses” on the basketball court. However, I still think the juxtaposition of candidates should work strongly in Obama’s favor.
