Somehow that line of reasoning got conflated into — if the Iranians get the nuke, the Israeli’s are fucked. But the line of causation always ran through the Saudi’s. In many ways it was the Anthrax attack that brought in 25 years of Republican rule. Most Americans, myself included, were beside themselves with rage at being so humiliated. I’m not going to defend my rage — in retrospect it was uninformed and stupid. But it was there just the same, and essentially sealed the deal with middle America that the Democrats were not to be trusted with national defence. That wound has festered now for more than a quarter of a century. The only parallel is Cuba, which also humiliated the United States at the Bay of Pigs.</p> <p>It’s going to take a while for Americans to get used to losing.
