Condi’s threatening Iran again, on the slight chance they’re trying for nukes, because the lesson of Iraq wasn’t "if you have nukes, you’re safe. If you don’t, we’ll invade". And I’m sure the Muslim world doesn’t find it odd that no one cares about Israel having nukes, but somehow Iran having them is beyond the pale.
But really, it’s all about childhood trauma. Just like every American federal election is about Vietnam and hippies, US/Iranian diplomacy is about an America still held hostage after 30 years, playing out a sad psychodrama, over and over again.

Condi doesn’t care about Iran since she can’t get Ferragamos or Louboutins there.
Evening Ian how are you this evening??
Sad beyond words.
Carter ‘08! (if only)
Well OK Condi—if you are right that Iranian nukes are a huge risk- what have you done about it?
My wish for miss Rice is that Stanford refuses her back on the grounds that she is an international criminal wanted for violating the Geneva conventions on prisoner treatment and torture!
Is the media mentioning at all that Saudia Arabia is getting Nuclear Reactor Tech from us and that they are a lot closer to Israel?
Do they mention that the Saudis give money to the PLO and under the table to Al Quieda?
Are there any estimates on who gives more to the terrorist the very rich Saudis or the Iranians, my bet is on the Saudis.
Yeah between Kissenger and Friedman jst how many NeoCons were spawned?
And John Yoo?
The Netroots Nation fairy told me you almost came. Sorry I couldn’t get to meet you.
And how do you know Ferragamo doesn’t have a Green Zone outlet? I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.
KO in LA w/guest Chris Hayes, Washington Editor, The Nation. Rachel up now.
Um, if Berkeley has Yoo, surely Stamford will have Rice.
OT from Raw Story more from Jane Mayer on morning joe show. Darth in the early days right after 911!
C’mon, TCU, that just made me lose my dinner! Whatever the spawn from that union would be, it would have to be the ugliest thing on earth.
Besides, I’m much happier when they are pwned.
OT – update from glenn greenwald (this sounds good):
When you are the executive branch of the usa, you can’t go on for 7 years pissing and moaning about another country- people expect you to FIX it- not BITCH about it…
Come on people- you have all the treasure and power of the USA in your hands and you can’t deal with this little problem? What the fuck GOOD are you?
He is at Berkley across the bay but Stanford is just 3 miles away and the thought of Rice that close is very chilling! But the rest of this administration needs and should be tried for War Crimes!
But, if it’s That Bad, what’s the whole point of coming here to talk about it?
I do agree it’s pretty messed up, I’m just wondering what the point of a point that’s says there’s no point, is.
Condi is aware that Iran can get nuclear technology legally and as long as they promise to use it peacefully there isn’t much Bush can do.
Except attack and chances are that such an attack would not have UN support, after all Russia is selling Iran the Nuke tech and China wants oil thats 2 votes on the UN security council with veto power.
Now then France and England may talk tough but between Iran and Russia if they were to both threaten to cut off oil supplies…
The condi strategy for dealin with Iran has been to refuse to meet with em..
Well—OK- if that’s your strategy- well fine- so how’s it workin out for you?
IT AIN’T you fuckin cretin!
We have results based ratings- and you FAIL!
Well maybe they reproduce asexually like Bush and Cheney:)
while i’m plugging democracy now!, last week (friday) amy goodman had jane mayer on for the whole show:
Yeah, my sinuses decided to kick in and let me know they were still around Friday afternoon so about the time folks were getting together Friday night, I was crashing.
I don’t imagine there would be much call for Ferragamos within the GZ in Irag, unless they come in various camouflage styles, and even then, I’d imagine there are more macho comforts of home looked for and sold at the GZ PX…
Poor Condi. She’s trying to deal with Iran now after George Bush & Dick Cheney decided to out Valerie Plame & her super-secret spy company that was inside Iran spying on their nuclear technology. Now Condi doesn’t have a clear picture on what they’re doing, so she’s getting tired and finds herself saying to the Iranians now, “Just do whatever but don’t attack us!”.
different dynamic if israel attacks first. (see recent benny morris op-ed)
Condi is aware that after failing to find WMD in Iraq that Bush has no Cred left to ask for UN sanction of another war. The theory of unprovoked war before another nation can become a problem has been disqualified as prone to abuse at the very least.
Bush needs another Causi Beli
So let’s see. If Condi says she is doing her job just fine by holding exactly one meeting on one of the most pressing issues in the world in a timespan of seven and a half years, can we all decide to just pay our taxes once every eight years?
Never forget this is why they took out Plame and Co… So facts, even in secret, couldn’t get in their way.
So according to Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (A Man Without a Country) everyone with a gun should preemptively go out and shoot everyone with a gun. Sounds like the Bush Doctrine to me.
Can you imagine the Bush Regime going back to the UN for another war? This time they would have to set up cooking tables (instead of holding viles of laundry detergent & using cartoon pictures) to “show” everyone that Iran is cooking up something nuclear.
not to worry – congress is apparently willing to pitch hit for the UN on the sanction front. (h.con.res.362)
Evening Ian,
Isn’t it the irony of ironies that we would use nukes( ok just little ones) to eliminate their nukes?
Isn’t rich we have the balls to tell anyone they don’t need nukes when the last sixty years we act as though they’re our last, only salvation. We couldn’t live without them for a day ( well I certainly could find better ways to squander the kid’s future.) If peace would come roaring down upon us we could use one of the two billion we waste every day to the MIC to help right our economy,no?
Its interesting but Israel has lots of nukes plus if Iran attacked America would have every reason to get involved. One nuclear test by Iran would not excuse an attack well maybe in the mind of a NeoCon it would because they want to attack.
One of our problems with this war is that all the data is being bent to support prowar conclusions.
That was a great show. Jane Mayer rocks! The great part is, she’s not a progressive ideologue engaged in a witch hunt, but a good journalist doing her job in a responsible way.
Bob in HI
We’re all sick and tired of our soldiers dying to protect Israel. The fact they have at least 150 nuclear weapons to protect themselves with means our soldiers have died in vain.
OT – just noticed that T.Boone’s newest commercial says that this (oil) situation is “one we cannot drill our way out of.”
Do I take away from this that T. Boone is no friend of GWB?
F the nukes. It is all about oil. Oil is worth much more to Bushco than some stinkin’ nukes.
At some point Bush, Blair, Silvo etc are all going to be asked by the UN, the Hague etc what did they know and when about lots of things like WMD, torture, war crimes etc.
Bush is leaving office soon I don’t think any world leader wants to risk helping Bush now.
Sad indeed. If more people would study history, even just a teeny tiny bit more, they’d understand what’s been happening with this Republican-led dismantling of the Constitution. We’re currently watching the “John Adams” DVD set, and man oh man, is that good. Gotta think it’s made some people question the Republicans actions over the last few decades.
People need to empower themselves especially on the information front (FDL and others are good place to start), instead of relying on increasingly fake news outlets like the Associated Press (ever since Ruturd and Sam Zell joined the Board), who include lines like this in a supposed “hard news” story:
Wow. They’re really getting desperate.
Condi may be threatening Iran again, but what she isn’t doing is endorsing McCain. Since Bush’s last Secretary of State, Powell, is moving toward an endorsement (and is already working with behind the scenes) of Obama, is Rice following suit? Not sure we would want Obama to be linked to the Condilicious one, but it is hilarious to consider.
Forgot the link:
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/n…..l_suppo.php
actually i don’t think the desire for war has much to do with nukes with most of the folks jonesing for more war.
wmd is just a story for us rubes.
Pittsburg next year, August 13th through 16th. Who do we know in Pennsylvania? I only think of Jayt. I already signed up! It was so nice to meet everyone.
If McCain gets appointed or Diebolded to president, the world will go friggin’ apesh*t crazy.
The other day she was asked about Obama and for a second almost seemed to light up. Wow. I hadn’t seen that much life in her….evah.
T-Boone did give money to the Swift Boaters and he publicly promised a million dollars if anything the Swift Boaters said was wrong Kerry called him out and T-Bonne has welched.
But on the plus side Teaxs is paying higher power rates now to pay for the power transmission lines for T-Boone to ship his wind power out of Texas.
T-Boone is good about getting rich thats about it.
She also stated that “new blood” was needed.
Yep. I saw the notice. Thinking on it.
I think it was Dennis Kucinich who said when the impeachment hearing start there will be a “special person” coming in to testify. It’s an important person…you know…maybe someone from another government? British government? Wouldn’t it be hysterical if it was Tony Blair!
I’m daydreaming again. *slapping my face to wake myself up*
I’ve always thought that the Stanford Hoover Institution tower has a certain jail-like quality to it. Perhaps we could turn it into a prison for war criminals…
Sibel?
I agree WMD is just a public justification for what Bush wants to do. But he is at least going through the motions of democracy he hasn’t started ruling by decree yet regardless of what we think, or even his base thinks.
Others may have missed it on IBA News (shown on Mosaic on LinkTV) but awhile back there was a call in Israel for new elections. One of the ‘experts’ interviewed was against such because the initiative also called for implementing the U.S. method of ‘Presidency’(as contrasted to the Prime Minister form of Parliamentary democracy).
His thought was that if Israel implemented such ‘We would be stuck for 4 years with someone we might want to remove’; ironic that Israel would have such an objection to our way of having Presidents isn’t it?
oil and power. power and oil. The only two things shrubco understands…
Or that British guy whose diaries were made to be state secrets in Britain and banned from publication???? That would be cool.
As it becomes more clear that Obama is going to win, we’ll be seeing more and more Repubes kissin his keester to curry favor with the next Prez. There was an obvious PR offensive about two weeks ago from Gov. Gropinator in California. Steroid boy was on several national “news” shows talkin bout his false environmental cred, and how he’d consider a position with an Obama Admin. AP articles dutifully repeated that manufactured storyline.
While it’s “hilarious” to watch the ass-kissers search for the next set of gluts on which to affix their slimy lips, just as it is in the average corporate environment where you see the same thing, it’ll quickly become infuriating if Obama appeases these spineless twerps and gives them jobs.
Let’s stop calling a pig a rose; it is NOT an ‘impeachment hearing’ but a hearing into the ‘imperial presidency’; impeachment is NOT a subject that will be broached by Conyer’s Kabuki show.
Are you suggesting that Condi thinks that Obama would hire her for a White House job?
Geez, TCU, I don’t see the plus in that!
(Great dinner Friday, enjoyed meeting you.)
Rat catcher?
Colin Powell? Who else was in the know and left the WH?
So far as I can tell, T. Boone made a very wise decision regarding energy. One that was good for him and the other six billion inhabitants of this planet.
Here is a very thoughtful analysis regading the prospects of supplanting fossil-fueled electricity by wind power. It’s by Jerome a Paris, a French energy analyst who posts frequently at Dkos: http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..203/553055
hi ian–every time i hear this over again i think–
mares eat oats
and does eat oats
and little lambs eat ivy
a kid’ll eat ivy too
wouldn’t you?
i posted this earlier in another thread, but since rice is mentioned, here it is again-

hi pups-haven’t read comments yet, but saw the post and had to add what i saw on tv last night….an interview with condi–sorry don’t remember if it was cnn or msnbc, i’ll try to find the link and add it later if it’s on the site….
she emphasized, numerous times, that ’we’ were willing to talk, and are talking……that there is more than one group in iran that is involved in running their country and when one group doesn’t do what is right that the other may ’step in’ and steer the country in a good direction…….i sat there and thought, i don’t believe it, we’re backing the opposition to take over….a coup…we’ll cause a disruption (war) and back the opposition and put them in power. to date, i have poo poo’d the ’we’re gonna attack iran ’ memes here……i admit it……but now i heard a new way for us to do it and it came out of condi’s mouth on national tv. attack from within.
that’s pretty much what she was sayin……well, we tried, we talked, and they wouldn’t listen sooooooo, we had to do SOMEthing……..that’s what she said. i heard it, she repeated it a few times in the interview.
and you know i have good ears.
(and i’m having browser issues, i keep repeating, so, commenting back may not be on the menu)
============
just got in. had a wonderful afternoon with friends in from out of town. took them to a talented silversmith’s house where they saw how he creates his magnificent jewelry, his website will be up in a little while, bookmark it….www.sterlingroots.com
jonathan silbert.
then we went to passion works studio at atco, a-how do i say it politically correct? don’t know, so, it’s a mentally retarded mentally retarded artists hub……..they make art…..it’s amazing…….our pbs station did a show on them, it won an emmy. http://www.passionworks.org
they make passion flowers and other things, my friends purchased MANY things there.
i know people/artists who work there that assist the artists who make the art…..
then to the local health food store, the farmacy, where another friend feeds the community with love and good food and good books……he bought a book, the same book i had passed onto him…and couldn’t find, the other day.
and drives down twisty-turny tree and hill-lined roads where hal got to push the pedal to the metal…..there are no straight roads here but the 4-lane.
visit se ohio, every time someone visits i see how much there is to do here….all of it good and having to do with the people who live here. magnificent.
===
yes, i did that on purpose, i’m hoping when people google these places later it will lead to the lake…….the firedoglake is a fine place.we know that.
jonathan called me a ’weaver’ today, i said yeah i used to weave, he said, you know what i mean. yep, i most certainly do, connections between people, weave them, let them all lead one thing to another…..like teh google.
edit—and like the lake. jane is a weaver, too.
oh, that would be rich….
I have been in it many times and it is no jail! It is though part of the library with books and papers written by Hoover and others Fellows there!… It was kinda cool to visit it though it is not open to the general public and I only was able because I there on business representing Xerox service.
And I’m sure the Muslim world doesn’t find it odd that no one cares about Israel having nukes, but somehow Iran having them is beyond the pale.
Why should I really care w/n Iran has nukes? Everybody else in the neighbor hood has ‘em – or can buy one. The Iranians are a long way from stupid. At what point did MAD, which held off a nuclear war between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. for decades, lose its value?
I understand that the fear is two-fold:
a) that they’d nuke Israel (ridiculous *and* MAD provoking), or
b) that they’d provide terrorist organizations with nukes.
Why not tell ‘em they can make all the defensive nukes they want, but that the I.A.E.C is going to have people there watching the inventory in such an extensive and fool-proof manner that those defensive nukes would be assured to stay right where they are – in storage, fully accounted for.?
And make Iran pay for the cost of having the International Nuclear Energy Commission perform its mission?
How about Ann Wright?
Could be, LS. I have no idea who it will be but am anxious to find out.
Ubetchaiam, thanks for the correction.
ThingsComeUndone, no I’m suggesting that Condi has been the walking dead under George Bush for so long that she too is longing for a Barack Obama presidency. LOL And about Colin Powell….now that would be a juicy witness, huh? Whoa.
How are you doing, WWD?
Exactly why is it in the interests of the U.S. to guarantee a regional nuclear monopoly to the mideast’s first nuclear proliferator?
How about Ann Wright?
Sibel Edmonds?
cool.. I’ve never been inside before. It does seem imposing, sort of windowless and prison-like from a distance though. fitting though… shrub will, at best, be remembered as a second Hoover.
see me at 52…we think alike…must be somebody Kucinich believes in.
Let’s see now … The last time we sponsored a coup in Iran, we installed the Emperor of the Peacock Throne in place of a democratically elected president. How did that work out?
Much better now ;) but ate too much. Feeling vewy sleepy…
It was so much fun hanging out with you while you were here!
PW’s upstairs….
I wish I’d met Loo Hoo…. :(
Nah Hoover was much better than Shrub ever could even dream of, the only thing both have done was to fuck up the economy at Hoover didn’t kill/maim hundreds of thousands of people through a war of choice!!Started with outright lies and deceptions to make HIS Oil buddies even richer!!
It was great to meet you:) The chiropracter fixed my back no heavy exercise for 3 days and I should ice it.
The plus is that T-Boone has committed to buying these wind turbines but if Texas gets angry about higher power rates then they can stick T-Boone with the full costs of the new power lines after all its not like you can argue that T-Boone does not have the money.
Or that Texas paying for other people like me in Seattle to get cheaper power is fair.
Texas Dems now have an issue to beat over the head of the State GOP. I hope the state GOP defends T-Boone’s right to fleece Texas taxpayers because that will just help our cause more.
good point.
Oh. Yes. Yes you do! And her you too…
Who? What does she know? A lot I hope!
I’m ok Nahant. Took myself for a run, enjoying the endorphins. How’bout you?
Here’s some wiki for you:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Wright
loo hoo at 44–jayt is in indianapolis…….but there are a few in pennsylvania, tw3 among them, and i’m in se ohio, i can definitely do pittsburgh……i want to do pittsburgh…….one of my best friend’s cousins has a gallery there, and he does incredible art, and i want to go to the warhol museum……it peeves me off that he doesn’t get credit for all of the technical advances that he created and enacted……noone knows what he did on that side of art…without him many printing processes and other things wouldn’t be possible…..his affect on the art world is not just about soup cans and marilyn monroe, i will be glad if only a few people get to know that.
pittsburgh has had it’s own things over which it has had to triumph, but it always will. an early tom cruise movie was made there, about a kid who had to make it in sports or he had no future outside of the steel mills, i saw it at a union conference, can’t remember the name……but it was accurate.
and i took a steamboat to pittsburgh, up the ohio through 4 docks in the fall was spectacular and then we arrived at night in pittsburgh…..wow. keep in mind there are no city lights in athens, had been a while since i had seen such a sight, and from the water……wow.
there is an incline to a college across the river, where there are other night spots, sorry, don’t remember which river, there are three rivers that converge there……
and if you venture into ohio from there, is amish country not far away, where my one grandma is from. the other is from pennsylvania dutch country which is a few hours from there, worth seeing…..lotsa tourists go there.
and not far from pittsburgh is falling water, frank lloyd wright house…….spectacular. i would make sure to rent a car and go there if i were you. can tell you a lot about it.
so, is a location that has a lot to offer, and if people want to travel south to seohio, 4 hours or so, i would be glad to have a caravan to continue the ’convention’….
This person seems to understand power generation from a power generation or Engineers viewpoint I bookedmarked it to read it more later cause I don’t want to miss the comments here.
Even Bush, Cheney, the MSM the financial talking heads even T-Boone don’t seem to understand the logistics of getting things done as far as power generation goes in the real world.
Good Find:)
T-Boone is right about wind power but he still supports swift boaters.
jayt is in Indiana. I’m in PA along with Elliot and several others. Milinaryman is nearby.
Thank God the thought of Condi working for Obama euhh!
Cool! Hope to meet you.
That is a good resume:) Obama should make a point to hire everyone who quit or was fired for squealing on Bush.
correction–i said docks, 4 locks in the river, not docks….locks, you enter them and the water levels have to come up or down, is a weird experience……..like in a canal…….old timey ways.
Oh, impeachment will be “broached.” But it will not be an impeachment hearing unless the HJC makes a formal resolution and votes to make it so. Only then will they get the kind of investigative powers that they need.
Bob in HI
Cool!!!
Yes, especially the higher level military who quit. They should get all their seniority reinstated.
revdeb—elliot’s in pennsylvania?????? my mind is blown……
revdeb, penn isn’t that far from ohio…….we have one expressway that goes there…….there is a joke that you ’can’t get there from here’, but i can get to pennsylvania!!
I am doing great! A little cool here in the Bay Area but that’s much better than the heat we were having. The graden wilts in the middle of the day when it is too hot… And I love the fresh tomatoes and veggies from the garden….
ok, bet on it loo hoo, and i don’t make promises i don’t keep……….my email is at my flickr page, but i don’t check it all of the time, but i will……if you email it, i will give you the real one.
i’m kinda hopin’ some pups come and stay here, pick you up at columbus, 1 1/2 hrs away, we travel up to the conference, then back here then i send you off at the columbus airport after………i’ll have room by then, and it’s free. and i live in a nice place. i want to share it. it’s wonderful here.
Ian, You are dead right on the Iran-Hostage psychodrama. In many ways it was the Anthrax attack that brought in 25 years of Republican rule. Most Americans, myself included, were beside themselves with rage at being so humiliated. I’m not going to defend my rage — in retrospect it was uninformed and stupid. But it was there just the same, and essentially sealed the deal with middle America that the Democrats were not to be trusted with national defence. That wound has festered now for more than a quarter of a century. The only parallel is Cuba, which also humiliated the United States at the Bay of Pigs.
It’s going to take a while for Americans to get used to losing. Our currently failing economy, however, will make it easier.
I think the original idea, before things really got undone, was that if the Iranians got nukes, the Saudi’s would have to get them, and that if the Saudi’s got them, the Israeli’s would be fucked. Somehow that line of reasoning got conflated into — if the Iranians get the nuke, the Israeli’s are fucked. But the line of causation always ran through the Saudi’s. If the Saudi’s get nukes, which is quite possible, Iran’s nukes become strategically superfluous (from Israel’s point of view).
No one reads history anymore.

do i have the wrong thread again? eureka gave me the right nickname…..turtle with the spunky bullhorn. forever epu’d……
you are being rhetorical aren’t you?
Bob, they HAVE the powers, they -Conyers, Pelosi,Hoyer,Emmanuel- just won’t use them.
